4-string Electric Bass with Poplar Body, Maple Neck, Indian Laurel Fingerboard, and 2 Single-coil Pickups - 3-Tone Sunburst

First introduced in 1960, the Jazz Bass has withstood the test of time to become one of the most played and recorded instruments in modern music history. Inspired by the original, the Squier Classic Vibe '60s Jazz Bass is an incredibly affordable instrument with the classic J Bass offset-waist body, fast-action neck, and dual single-coil pickups. Squier's Classic Vibe '60s J Bass is remarkably comfortable to play and lets you pull off extremely tight runs and grooves with ease. Of course, it also delivers the legendary punchy bass sound you can only get from a pair of Jazz Bass pickups.

Amazing for the price!

By Bob P. from St. Augustine on June 30, 2023

Let me start by saying I have been playing bass for 50 years. And in that time I have played every make from Fender to Rickenbacker to Gibson to Hofner and everything in between, both vintage and new. I can't find a single thing to fault on this bass. Tuners are tight, the fretwork was excellent and the pickups actually sound pretty good. The intonation was spot on out of the box. The only thing I had to do was lower the action. I waited to find a light one. Mine is only 8lbs. 4oz. Can't see how you could go wrong with one of these. You can always upgrade the pickups and electronics and still save a boatload of money.

Not impressed, at first.

I have a Squier CV 70s P-Bass (black, black binding and block inlays) and am absolutely blown away. GREAT BASS!
I decided to order the CV 60s J-Bass because the Precision was so good. I was at bit underwhelmed. I didn't like the Indian Laurel fingerboard and the thicker (VERY slightly - if any, might be my imagination) neck. I adjusted the truss rod a little and treated the fingerboard with mineral oil. MADE A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE. I really like the 60s feel of the neck. I can now glide along the fingerboard. I love this bass too! These are really nice. I have some high dollar basses, these are every bit as good!
The only negative I have with the Jazz bass is the side fret markers. They are hard to see against the somewhat lighter color of the Indian Laurel wood.
Don't know about Squier Affinity, Vintage Modified, or CV 50s basses but the Classic Vintage (60s and 70s) are pro quality.

Great bass

By Mike Pettit from NY on April 7, 2022

The Squier classic vibe 60s jazz bass is a great bass for the price. The neck plays vary smooth, the sound is really nice and it just feels good setting on my knee. I put some flat wound strings on it and lowered the action a little and it's just a great instrument. Also buying from Sweetwater makes buying anything vary easy. Thanks Mitch!

Loving my new bass

By Bob from Illinois on January 20, 2021 Music Background: Some musical experience with the violin and mandolin.

I decided that I was going to learn how to play the bass. I have music background but no guitar/bass experience. I did a lot of research and read many reviews and decided on the Squier CV 60's Jazz Bass. The guitar is beautiful. I have received several compliments on it from friends. Quality and craftsmanship seem to be excellent. I'm very happy with the bass so far. Having fun learning. I'm really happy with the customer service from Sweetwater. Irving called me personally and made sure everything was good. Overall great experience with the new bass and with Sweetwater.

I bought this to dabble in bass playing. Pretty amazing what you can get for $400.00 now. It is flawless. Set up and ready to play right out of the box. sounds great. The pickups are well balanced. Can't think of anyway it could be better.

This is is on e of Bass Player Magazines Best Basses

By Frank Vozak from Oak Park, IL on April 7, 2020 Music Background: Recent retread from former days of greatness

Bass Player chose this bass for best of 2020 along with several other much more expensive basses. That's says a lot for a bass that is under $500F

Excellent bass

By Jim from Santa Rosa, California on January 15, 2020 Music Background: Semi professional player over 30 years

Set up was right on out of the box thanks to Sweetwater. Bass is a joy to play with punchy tone.
Passive j-bass electronics are simple but let the bass sit perfectly in a band mix.
Quality finish and hardware is excellent. Highly recommended.

Un bajo verdaderamente sorprendente, calidad y diseño, el sonido es muy bueno, realmente cómodo y rápido para tocar, una gran variedad en sonido; lo compare con un jazz fender mexicano y no le pide nada. Lo recomiendo mucho

New bass

By Frank E McLaughlin from oswego on December 19, 2023 Music Background: songwriter /folk country and blues , play drums , guitar, harmonica

I like this bass, learning a new instrument is fun , the quality is good , no issues at all other then the inlat fret markings are dull and barely visible fingerboard has a dull finish , the body looks nice. thinking a short scale bass would have been a better choice as it is challenging for me to go back and forth from bass to guitar , which has nothing to do with the quality of the bass , just fret spacing .

I love this bass so much

By Sweetwater Customer on March 27, 2023

The only thing I would complain about is the knobs. They turn past where they're supposed to. The problem is easily fixable though if you show a guitar tech the issue. Otherwise this bass is marvelous.

Great Bass Great Price

By Stone on June 23, 2019 Music Background: Rock and Roll

I owned an American Jazz for 16 years and this little beauty compares very favorably.

Stock, it has a nice range of tone - from John Paul Jones Dazed an Confused warmth to his Heartbreaker growl - it's there. It simply just is.

For the gigging bassist and beginner I can't recommend it more. I also own a '70s CV P- bass that I absolutely love. So comfortable to play. Value, quality and upgradability.

You could buy three of these and customize the electronics for the price of a new American Jazz and not risk a drunk jacking up a $1200 bass telling you how you're the best player he's ever seen while stumbling over a wedge.

Squire is really hitting their Classic Vibe series out of the park. Next up for me is the '70s CV Jazz.

Good Bass for Lots of Applications

By Robin R. from Los Angeles on January 12, 2023 Music Background: session work, showcase bands, producer, horn arrangements,

I'm impressed with this bass at this price point. My son plays low brass in his high school concert band and is also a good guitarist. His band teacher tapped him to play bass in the school jazz band. This bass is perfect for the gig. It's affordable but plays and sounds great. I won't try to compare it to an American made J-bass at 5 times the price but this sounds like a J-bass should. It's handsome looking for an inexpensive instrument as well.

We've only had it for a week but that's enough time to get an overall feel for what it's capable of. Right out of the box, it plays nicely and the intonation is spot-on. I may lower the action a bit for him but that's just a matter of taste. The tuners are solid and it stays in tune. Overall, the workmanship is good (again, at this price point). The availability of the classic Fender 3-tone sunburst finish is nice, although the poplar body shows a lot of graininess which doesn't look quite like an American J-bass with an alder body.

Poplar is a good tone wood, although tin-eared critics are often fickle about anything that isn't alder. Don't let that bother you. I have a '97 American strat with a poplar body and it gets a particularly rich tone. So poplar is a good choice for this bass.

On the down side, the frets are sharp and could become uncomfortable. But they aren't so bad until you get to about the 10th fret. The only other thing I might mention is that the fingerboard is made from a low grade of Indian Laurel. Indian Laurel is a good substitute for rosewood and I've seen plenty of guitars with really nice Laurel fingerboards, but this piece looks really grainy and ugly. But that's mostly cosmetic as it plays smoothly. (maybe some oil would help.)

That said, it sounds so cool, I would even use it for a recording project. --definitely covers the low end quite well for any gig also.

Good Bass For The Money

By Doug on January 7, 2022

Being a guitar player, I need a "beginner" bass that is easy on the wallet. This fits that bill. And given my smaller hands, I need a thinner nut and the J-bass neck fits that bill as well. The finish and construction are about what you'd expect from a factory "crafted" MII bass; there are a couple of sharp fret edges but nothing to impede playing by any means, and the pickups don't seem perfectly in line with the strings. But I'm subtracting a star due to the bass having trouble staying in tune day-to-day with the higher-tension flatwounds that I prefer. She played well out of the box, but with my new strings I'll need to take her in for a setup to lower the action that keeps rising from the new string tension. Not a huge deal though. I'd still recommend this for beginners and anyone looking for an affordable J-bass to bang on without breaking the bank.

Classic Vibe

By Ron from Virginia on January 3, 2022 Music Background: Little to None

I never played an instrument when I was a kid and decided to pick up playing guitar at 57. First it was Electric Guitar and Now Bass Guitar. The Squier Classic Vibe '60s Jazz Bass - 3-Tone Sunburst has been an excellent choice as a beginner. I have been amazed at how quickly I was able to get comfortable with this Bass. I took it to B2R Music and took a few lessons so I could fully understand the capabilities and now love it.

I would of given 5 stars but as with all guitars I have bought over the last couple of years they have always had a case come with them even if it wasn't a great one. This base didn't come with a case and it would of been nice if the Rep would of told me that up front.

All in All, the Bass is good for beginner and intermediate players like myself and am sure I will enjoy if for years to come.

Good bass and very good platform for mods

By SK from Boston on December 3, 2020 Music Background: non pro experienced

A very solid bass, you have to like a thin neck and basic bridge but thats fine with me.
Tuners are nothing special nor are the pickups but certainly they are both fine at this price point.
Fit and finish are better than expected at this price point, no sharp frets or any finish blems.
Buying from Sweetwater allowed me to get a very lightweight example, as I intended this to be
an upgrade platform (pickups shall be changed to hum free etc).
There was an initial mixup about which exact bass was being shipped: big shout out to Ruben Palazuelos
for taking care of what could have been streesful, and making me feel like a VIP even though
this is a relatively inexpensive instrument. If customer service matters to you, then there is
a Sweetwater difference.
