Great Instrument

The Washburn J600 is a wonderful guitar. I was surprised by its aesthetics, as in the pictures don’t do it justice, to say the least. It has an old world look to it that is very easy on the eyes. The top is laminated spruce. The fingerboard is rosewood with mother of pearl block inlay (a very classy look). The back and sides are laminated maple (with a little flame on the back). The pickguard, bridge, tailpiece, and volume and tone controls are all solid ebony. The “cap” on the bridge is bone, as is the nut. The use of bone for the bridge gives the guitar a more open sound, with good sustain. Because of this, the J600 doesn’t have the bark or honk of a typical archtop guitar. Some may not care for this but the bridge can be easily replaced with a traditional solid rosewood or ebony bridge. I like the sound of this configuration and may just leave it as is. The acoustic sound quality of the Washburn is closer to a traditional steel string acoustic. If you were to hear someone play it with your eyes closed you would not think you were listening to an archtop being played. It has good volume acoustically and lots of depth. Plugged in, the J600 is rich in tone; warm and thick. Depending on how close you are to an amp you’ll have to watch your volume levels. Having a floating mini humbucker gives the amped sound a lot of air but that top is vibrating like crazy, not uncontrollable but you’d have to be aware. For the money the Washburn J600 is a great offering for an entry level archtop jazz guitar. Many thanks to Derek at Sweetwater for handling my order, which I placed over the phone before leaving town. The guitar was waiting for me when I returned.

Washburn Quality

I love the great tone of the J600 it is perfect for all around playing and I love the "Old School" look. I have a D20N and it plays so easy and great sound, I did put in a Martin thin line pickup and play it through an amp and the sound is great. I praise the Washburn company for making the finest guitars I have ever played.
