TC Electronic Infinite Sample Sustainer Pedal Reviews

Sample Sustainer Pedal for Guitar with TonePrint Support, Analog-dry-through Signal Path, and Reverb/Modulation

The TC Electronic Infinite Sample Sustainer is an incredible tool for expanding your guitar’s harmonic limits — from six notes to an endless array of layered chords and sustained tones! Activating the Infinite Sample Sustainer causes the pedal to capture a snapshot of your guitar’s signal, in either momentary or latching settings. This acts as an ambient drone that you can play over, as well as indefinitely layer using the pedal’s infinite setting. Sweetwater guitarists particularly appreciate the built-in reverb and modulation that can be applied to your samples, making it easy to create layered synthesizer-like pads. Furthermore, this pedal also offers TonePrint editing that allows you to tweak nearly every parameter of the Infinite Sample Sustainer’s controls in the TonePrint app. Up to three custom or artist presets can be stored in the pedal, making the Infinite Sample Sustainer a highly customizable powerhouse of harmonic potential.

Very interesting pedal!

By Patrick T. from Branson, MO
Music Background: Random guitarist =)

This pedal has a lot to explore! While it does the obvious which can allow you to explore the sounds of various intervals against cords, for example, it does so much more. This can act like an entire instrument on your pedal board. Fun to play around and experiment.

Sustainer pedal

By Gregory from Usa

This pedal allows you to sustain a note or chords so you can play over them. You can add different types of abeient tones to your playing. An ok, fun to use pedal

Works very well

By Dan from Syracuse NY
Music Background: Very little!

Because I don't play in a band or generally with other people. It adds some backing and is very easy to use!

I didn’t know I needed this

By Keane from Kentucky
Music Background: Hobbyist

I really like ambient styles and for that kind of music, this is the coolest tool I didn't know existed but glad I have one now. It basically works like a sustain piano pedal but for your guitar. You can hold a chord or note (or multiple notes on other settings I understand) for as long as you need it and then you press pedal again and it switches to a new desired note or chord. Great for creating musical backdrops for picked arpeggios or delay driven leads. I'm sure there are plenty of other uses too but I'm happy with that for now!

Great pad sounds!

By Dan from Southwest Michigan
Music Background: Solo instrumental guitarist

I bought TC Infinite Sustainer because I had to replace my failing EHX Freeze pedal which had become part of my "sound" over many years. Initially, I bought the EHX Deep Freeze thinking it would give me the same great sound as the Freeze plus more. I couldn't dial it in so I returned it and gave the Infinite Sustainer a try. While it doesn't sound exactly like the Freeze, I've found a setting that is close. What I really like are all the other options like in momentary with each press, you can add an additional note on top of your existing note/chord which creates really complex pad sounds. And randomly in that mode, the oscillation will change rhythms which makes everytime I use it a surprise. I'm very glad I got this pedal. It really has taken my sound to another level.

Does one thing really well

By Sweetwater Customer

I bought this pedal with a particular movui soundtrack recording in mind and it delivered big time, creating beautiful atmospheres effortlessly.
That's kind of what it does, and it's easy to use and has many interesting settings that I enjoyed exploring. Just don't expect it to do anything else, and if you do anything without pitch it has no idea how to process it, so you can't really make non-pitched textures (which is one of things I like about the original EH Freeze pedal)!

Buy a sustainer and get a reverb for free

By Sweetwater Customer

I've had this for some six months now.

My main qualm is that the sustained signal is very wet. I perceive a lot of modulation on the sustained drone, which isn't what I had hoped. But it's still very useful for slow songs. It adds a new way to play guitar for me. Its only competitors are the Gamechanger Audio Plus, the EHX SuperEgo, and perhaps the short loop function on the Boss DD-3T. I could be wrong, but from what I saw on videos, the Plus and SuperEgo add less, but different, modulation to the wet signal.

You can send the sustained signal to a muted channel and then just use the pedal as a good reverb. All my toneprint slots basically turn the sustainer into a reverb.

I was elated to see that by fiddling with the pre-delay I could get a poor-man's slapback delay!

In the future, if I get something like a Boss Slicer or a pattern tremolo, I *might* be able to turn this into a drum machine.

Some manageable disappointments: USB Mini is disappointing to see; even Apple is using USB-C. Toneprint; I use Linux (Debian), and Toneprint doesn't work well under Wine. I have to use a Windows Virtual Machine. But these are tolerable.

Wow!

I am already fond of this guitar pedal. I have been using it with the tc electronic crescendo pedal.
It puts a smile on my face every time I use it. This pedal will stay in my rig!

Great add for ambient/pad/drone and for practicing

By Mike from East Coast

Really enjoying this pedal - great for layering in a nice background sound to play over for, well, infinity, if you wanted to play for that long. The programmable presets available from TC are great too. Still digging in to all features and creative possibilities, but it definitely has earned a spot on the board. Enjoy!

Fun - there's a learning curve

By Sweetwater Customer

I bought this several months ago and haven't used it out yet. I played around with it when I got it and had some trouble getting a consistent good tone. Yesterday I tried putting a Keeley compressor into the pedal's effects loop though, and wow, that made a huge difference. Now it does exactly what I want it to do, and it's an awfully useful took for the pedalboard.

Good, but be aware it is EXTREMELY sensitive to having the right power supply

By JV from FL

This is not clearly stated in their ads or documentation, but this pedal must have EXACTLY the amperage that the DC input states. Unlike many pedals, if you try to use a 9V power supply with more amperage, the pedal will not work correctly. Personally, I believe TC should be selling this thing paired with a compatible PS to avoid confusion and unnecessary returns (I nearly returned mine).

Once you get past that minor hurdle, it's a great pedal. I bought it primarily for certain guitar solos in which there are some overlapping bits, a note sustained while you continue to play other parts. But you can have a lot of fun doing ambient stuff with this thing.

I use a Helix floor which has a built-in pedal model that can do most of what this pedal does. However, that pedal uses up a LOT of the processing power of the DSP chip. Trying to add that pedal to an existing patch will often be impossible unless you remove a lot of the other models from your signal chain.

nice pedal

By DRB from Misery

I make ambient music and this is really nice for laying down three notes or three chords and letting it drone on and on and on and one while I play over it. VERY NICE. There is more to this pedal than you'd think and I'm still exploring the options/capabilities.

Outstand, Filling, and Fun!

By Kyle from Michigan
Music Background: 20+ year musician, home recording and gigging with a band.

This pedal does exactly what it needs to do and it does it very well.

It's great for jamming at home, as you can easily turn it on and swap the note that you want it to play.

I also use it a lot playing with my band as well. It's excellent to clear "dead air" between songs and to add another layer of sound.

I'd highly recommend this pedal as it has tons of features to tweak your sound and there are also effects on it as well. It's Very fun and something that I'll likely keep on my board for a long time.

Fun, with lots of unexplained potential

By Randy
Music Background: Played a long time

TC has expanded on the idea of a "hold" pedal like the EH Freeze. The Infinite can be used for drones, pedal tones, layers, loops, etc. In addition there is is switchable reverb and Tone Print slots. Is all this too much of a good thing? Not if you like to experiment, but you will be on your own. The included instructions are a quick start sheet that could fit inside a fortune cookie and the downloaded manual is...the same quick start.

There is one quirk. As mentioned eslewhere, there is a slight modulation, a pitch wavering, in the held sounds. I'd perfer it wasn't there, but it's cool for some things and not that noticeable with others. Definately a fun pedal and reasonably priced.

Way Cool!

By William A. from Albany, OR

I like it....I do think that there's a little reverb or something being added even at the dryest possible settings...It must be needed for a seamless sound...I like it more than the EHX Freeze which sounds synthetic and might be cool sometimes but gets old...This doesn't have that and the options for stacking layers puts this ome miles ahead of the Freeze...

This is a blast

By David B.
Music Background: Rock Star/ Juggler.

I've been using this pedal as a practice tool, I sample a note and play on top, working on solos and improvising. It's great! The fx loop on the pedal opens up a completely different usage and where to place in your chain. This pedal is a blast.

Excellent Pad Overplay Device

By Dennis R. from Bradenton, FL
Music Background: semi-pro musician

The only thing that hold off a 5 star review is that you need to turn the level of the effect up more than I'd expect on the dial. It would be a little better if it were a MIX dial than a LEVEL dial. Short of that this is a great value item. Especially with tone-prints.

This is a great pedal

By Kevin R. from MI

I love this pedal, and it has a host of useful functions. The original attraction for me was to use it like a sustain pedal (for a keyboard) with guitar chords, which it does admirably well. However, by using the latch feature, I can create drones with individual notes, chords or layered sounds, and this has become much more useful to me than I anticipated. There are more features I am sure I will be exploring in the future, and continually finding new ways to use it. It is both effective and fun!

...And It Runs on a 9V Battery

By TRK from BSPA
Music Background: Playing almost 50 years now....

Not mentioned in the description or Quick Start Guide, the bottom of the pedal can be removed via the quick release center screw, inside is a normal 9V battery lead. This makes the pedal even more versatile for busking, etc.... Great pedal overall. Ben Porter, my sales rep, is always awesome. Note the dip switches inside the pedal, shown in the picture. Still tracking down their functions (TC Elec. needs to provide more complete documentation.)

Great for creating pads, endless additional experiments possible using the effects loop

By STEVEN D. from Springville, UT

I use this pedal with a BOSS SY-1 to create pads to play over.

The sustainer pedal degrades the sample that it takes a bit and also provides ducking. I researched this and found TCE describes this as an intentional feature, not a defect. For my application of the pedal at least, this places the pad into the background and helps the foreground that plays over it to stand out. I can see where some players might be surprised or expecting something different but I am very happy with it.

Also, it is a sample, not a short looper so something like ringing out a power chord from a spitty fuzz pedal is not going to continue the variations. It is going to be a gnarly hum. Maybe that would be different when using the effects loop of the sustainer. I haven't tried that yet, and I haven't seen anyone demonstrating the pedal try this either. It's an idea.

Fun pedal with software limitations and poor documentations

By Feda H. from Alexandria, VA

This is a fun pedal and a good practice tool. The default setup gives you a few different sounds and you can get some great sounds out of it. This is especially true if you put some ambient effects before it. It can make some very nice drone sounds to play over. The pedal does have two drawbacks for me.

The first is minor but it should be mentioned. Documentation that comes with the pedal and what is available on TC's web site is very limited. It is not enough to use the pedal effectively. Fortunately, there are good video tutorials for the pedal on YouTube. Without those, it would be difficult to figure out how to use the pedal to it's full potential with the little bit of information that comes with it.

The second is a bigger issue for me because it greatly limits the tonal potential of the pedal. This pedal gives you only a fraction of what it can do on it's own. Unlocking the full sound potential of the pedal requires their Tone Print software and this software does not run on Linux. Their web page claims that it runs on PC/MAC but it actually only runs on Windows PC's. So if you are a Linux user you will have to settle for the default functionality of the pedal.

Despite of those shortcomings, it is a good pedal.

Love it

By Sweetwater Customer

I really dig this pedal. It has be come a big part of my practice routine. I find the sounds it creates to feel organic and inspiring. The ergonomics and workflows just make sense. I can easily sit down and lose an hour with this pedal. I have had no regrets with this purchase.

Better Than Plus

By N.W.

I hate that I like it more than my Game Changer Plus pedal (I've had on my board for about 9 months now, maybe used at 75 gigs?), but I do. It has a slight delay when you press it down (probably adjustable) that makes the sample more clear while you are still able to press down at a more comfortable point in the music. This made the pedal super easy to use on stage, right out of the box. It also has a built in verb (had to had a shimmer in the effects chain to make the Plus sound good enough on its own). These types of pedals have a long way to go, but sure have come a long way recently.

There have been other sustain pedals, this one nails it with incredible tone print options!

By Dwayne M. from Phoenixville, PA
Music Background: Pro Gigging Amateur ;-)

There have been many sustain pedals that grab a moment of time and sustains it forever. Some are simple and freeze a frequency and others offer some modulation so the captured sound can have some movement and free like it has some life. Those are good, but are not great for features and or price. Then there is the newly released TC Infinite pedal, it is great. It does the basic functions with good built in modulation and the option to add reverb and then there is the TC Tone Print slots that let you go crazy with effects and texture on that captured sound bite. You can easily push it into a classic pad. Not enough? They give you an effects look to further flavor your infinite sound bit. Grabbing a note is easy, layering it is easy, and clearing the sound is easy. It's not like using a looping pedal because your timing for building your sample is not important. Moving between captures uses tails to provide a smooth transition between sound bites like captured chords. Switching off the capture also uses tails as default so you don't loose your effect abruptly. It all feels very organic and is so fun to just play and create! Ya it's worth the price, which is not that much as pedals go.
