Classic, Can Modify

By Mark T. from Michigan, USA
Music Background: Semi-retired performer

This, to all appearance, is the rack design, sold by Hohner since the 1960's. Reading the "pitch" description - I, for one, DON'T WANNA' "look like Neil Young", nor Bob Dylan, since neither of them can ACTUALLY PLAY, worth a darn **... (Blowing in-out, in-out, over 3 note-holes, doesn't constitute "playing" harmonica.)
I never criticize, if I can't do better, myself...
I began paying-gigs, as vocalist, then practiced "Blues Harp" (Marine Band) the required "10,000 hours", back when they sold for $5, and Hohner would "rebuild" (replace) them, for small fee, if you sent them back to Hicksville (seriously) New York... (Out on Long Island.)
I learned guitar - basics, because I wanted to learn the key-transpose to jam with harmonica (F-Harp, for "Blues in C", etc...)
This harp holder - rack - will do perfectly well, except for some harps that may have rounded side-plates, or perhaps some new, slippery - Teflon (tm) kinda finish.
I did find it necessary to make some minor modifications. Specifically - so the harp would meet my mouth straight-on (not at angle), I made a small bend, UPWARD, low on the neck-loop (near wing-nuts) on both sides.
(1) Because I play harp precisely, sometimes HARD, that bend made the rack contact my collar-bone, then provided good "embouchure", to meet my mouth straight-on. (See the more-expensive models, have curved-metal frames, for the same reason...)
(2) With the rack thus modified, and my playing sometimes VIGOROUSLY, the wing nuts need to stay tight - not back off. Tightening wing nuts every 3 min. was a nuisance. I happened to be a welder as "day job", so I put a simple "tack-weld", to inside - securing the bolts to the inside of frame. If you don't have access, to weld, or braze, or solder that bolt - do a good job with well-mixed epoxy "weld" glue, and that should hold...
This simple, inexpensive "rack" is good enough for many pros. The modifications I made can be seen in re-design of the more-expensive, curved, angled, or padded models.
The MOST IMPORTANT factor of all, well-known to most PRO musicians... is that "10,000 hours of practice", required ("wood-shedding") to become truly proficient, on ANY instrument.
My best wishes to all, any age, any level of performer.
