Mesa/Boogie High-Wire Dual Buffer Pedal Reviews

Dual Buffer Pedal with Mute Switch, Boost, Tuner Out, Effects Loop, and Clearlink Line Driver

Mesa/Boogie's High-Wire dual buffer pedal eliminates signal-loss issues created by your pedalboard. The dual-buffer circuitry ensures the perfect impedance load on your guitar's pickups, while also sending the exact signal the front of your favorite amplifier requires for that direct-in feel and tone. A +3dB level-comp switch is an effective way to drive long cable runs back to your amp. And the High-Wire is loaded with other useful features, such as a variable boost, footswitchable mute, and tuner output. The High-Wire is sure to find its way onto many Sweetwater guitarists' pedalboards.

You Need This

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Guitarist, drummer, songwriter for 30 years

This is hands down the most important guitar pedal that I own. It isn't all that exciting and it may feel tempting to skip it and buy that other pedal you've always wanted, but I promise you will be glad that you bought this instead.

I was shocked when I heard the difference of plugging my guitar straight into my amp instead of going through my pedalboard, I didn't realize how much tone was being lost by running through 10 pedals. That triggered me to look for a solution, which led me to this pedal. It acts as a buffer before AND after your other pedals, which is essential (Look up Josh Scott's video on buffering on YouTube to learn more about why you need both). Once I got this connected my tone came right back as if I plugged right into the amp, but I now had access to my beloved pedals.

f this were stolen I wouldn't hesitate to buy another one immediately. The boost feature is a nice addition but the real benefit is that your other pedals will be useful, rather than tone suckers. Do yourself a favor and buy it. You can thank me later.

Rock soilid buffer and preamp (boost)

By Friday A. from In the shadow of Motown

This Mesa High-Wire solves several challenges for me as a performing electric bassist, playing on silent stages with IEMs. My favorite boutique (famous, hand built) buffer/preamp/di is expensive and bulky. While it takes up a lot of real estate in my carry bag, it sounds amazing, always providing a great tone and solid signal to FOH. However, many sound techs in my area always insist on using their own DIs, refusing to use anything I bring, no matter what it is. My work-around is the Mesa High-Wire buffer/boost preamp pedal. It offers the features and excellent tone of my expensive DI, just minus the DI. Instead, I send High-Wire output to venue DI, as they require. The High-Wire buffer and gain features are excellent, as are the Mesa build and tonal qualities. I'm super happy with the High-Wire, sounding great, while being affordable and easily transportable. Thanks to Mesa and Sweetwater for making this device available.

Best buffer!

By jason g. from Aptos, CA

After trying a lot of buffers this is by far the best. The stowaway is also phenomenal if you only need the input buffer portion. Miles better than just using a boss pedal or the JHS or the tc Bonafide. This one and the stowaway sound so much better and I tried all these neck to neck to really compare. This version has the input buffer and output buffer and a really nice clean boost. If you have a pedalboard with a lot of effects and or a long cable run, this can really clean up your sound in a beautiful way. Definitely worth the cost.

Bass and Pedals

By Sweetwater Customer

Some ask why use pedals for bass at all.....You can't hear them in a mix or live......but when you add up each pedal's piece you may just find that exact sound you've been looking for ......except the lack of highs and fidelity that give bass lines that punch and clarity.
This fixes all of that and lets your amp push out the sounds that you had in your head but never heard from a speaker.

As for you stereo folks...put one of these on each leg and hear two channel magic.

By Sweetwater Customer

i use two....one for the front end for boost type fx and one for the the time/modulation based fx for the amps loop. No loss of tone, added clean gain if needed and it's quiet.

No More Tone Loss

By Chris G. from Kansas
Music Background: Professional Musician, Educator

I had never actually sat down and thought about how much cable there was between my guitar and my amp before, but it really adds up! A couple of 18ft cables, plus all the patch cables on a 10-pedal board, and I'm close to 35 feet of cable run between the two. I know a quality buffer is a difference maker in having the a good sound, but I didn't realize how BIG of a difference it would make. There's no more 'mud' in my sound. A couple of other reviews describe it as taking the blanket off your amp and I couldn't agree more! Not only is the sound quality improved, but the volume difference between my active and passive PUPs is virtually gone. I love the tuner out so I have an always on tuner in my chain, and the boost option is handy for when I need a particular part to cut through the mix.

The pedal is slightly taller than the others around it, but since it lives on the top right of my board it's not a big deal at all. Overall, you can't go wrong with the High-Wire!

This changes everything

By G A. from Las Vegas

I run my '62 Tele and "62 Strat re-issue guitars thru my pedal board that includes a Keely compressor, BB distortion, MXR Stereo chorus, and two TC Electronics delay (various combinations at various times). Playing live, I run a 15' cable to the amp. I was losing massive amounts of volume when switching to the Strat which has "vintage" pickups. The Mesa/Boogie High-wire dual buffer changed all that. My signal has no volume loss at all. As advertised, it's like plugging directly into the amp. The best pedal investment I ever made. Simply a must have if you run thru pedals and longer cables. Get the dual buffer (in and out) - it is well worth the cost. The extra boost features are excellent. You won't realize how much signal loss you are experiencing until you hear the difference. Make sure you are using high quality lower resistant cable as well. I use Mogami throughout - pedal connections with Mogami wire with sp 500 plugs, and Mogami cables for guitar to board and board to amp. Well worth the cost. Anything less is killing tone and volume.

TONE SAVER MIRACLE!

By Sweetwater Customer

Dual input/output buffer is the way to go and this little unit is a TONE SAVING MIRACLE!!! Maybe the best $... I ever spent.
It wasn't until I unplugged my guitar from my pedalboard and straight into my amp that I realized that I was missing something, or rather that my pedalboard was sucking my tone. Long story short is that instead of investing in a swticher/looper, and overpriced cables, I decided to give this Mesa/Boogie High-Wire a try and I could not be happier. I am now getting the plugged straight into the amp tone while running through my pedalboard and my pedals sound better as well. The dual input/output buffer here is brilliant and breathes new life into my signal. I did find that my fuzz and my CryBaby Wah sounded better outside of this buffered loop so I am running my guitar into my fuzz and wah and then into the High-Wire and then running the rest of my pedals (overdrives, modulations, delay, reverb, etc) through the Hire-Wire Send and Return. The boost is an added bonus too!
If you are looking for a buffer for your pedalboard I would highly recommend this one. I could not be more pleased with it. It is a massive tonal upgrade for me and makes my whole rig sound its very best. I will never run a pedalboard without one now that I know what magic this does!

Marvelous

By Bryan S.

I got a 10 pedals in a row. I got a Boss Power Stack which is so noisy when you put it in to the Pedalboard. When I put this Mesa Boogie High Wire, The sound makes it brighter. And the noise, the hums disappear. It's perfect to my Pedalboard. I highly recommend this product to any Pedalboard

Fantastic Pedal!

By Justin C. from Utah
Music Background: Professional Musician

I found out I had to run a 50 foot cable from my pedal board to my amp behind the stage for a nightly gig. I was nervous about the signal flow, and my amp sounding like garbage with having to run such a long cable. Well this little guy solved the problem with running effects in the front end of my amp. I have no signal loss, and the tone truly sounds phenomenal, which I never thought would be the case having to run such a long cable. I was told by Mesa that the Clearlink Send would be good to run for my effects loop in my Rectoverb 25, I plan to eventually add that. The solo boost on this pedal is incredibly helpful! The mute is a nice function too. I don't use the tuner out function because I have a wireless tuner system on my board. I'm very grateful to Mesa Boogie for making such a great pedal with so much versatility. I'm so pleased with this pedal. It's things like this that make me support Mesa. Thanks to Sweetwater as always for such great service! They're my go to for all my gear needs!

Clears up the congestion

By Anthony B. from Bristol RI
Music Background: Former pro, now hobbiest and attorney

First off, I have to give my long time Sweetwater contact, Nick Church a 5 star review. I've been doing business with him for several years and he is just old reliable. Second, I couldn't believe how much cleaner my amps sounded when I intergrated this into my pedal board. Adds chime and glassiness. The boost also sweetens up the sound nicely. The input and output arraingement is also nice for cable management. Don't discount this as an ineffective addition to your pedal boad. Give Nick a call, you'll be glad you did.

An Absolute "Must Have"

By RJ from The Twin Cities
Music Background: 40 plus years of Rocking

This Buffer Pedal is worth every penny. I read the instructions, put it on my pedal board with six other pedals and it was like taking a blanket off the front of my Deluxe Reverb. I also extensively use a Mesa 5:50 Express and the result was the same. I previously used a Keeley Katana in front of the other pedals for a boost but it significantly colored the tone and doesn't come close to the High-Wire. With the High-Wire, my pedals, which consist of an old OCD, Malekko Ekko 616 delay, Mini-Deja Vibe, Keeley compressor, MXR EVH phaser and chorus pedal ALL sound fuller, rounder and clearer. I have been playing over 40 years, gig/record, own and play several vintage Fender and Gibson guitars and love the sonic improvement this robust pedal has made on my rig. Once you hear your guitar with this buffer, you will wonder how you ever survived without it. I read the reviews posted here by other Sweetwater customers, bought it, and sincerely thank the other guys for sharing their experiences with this pedal.

Tremendous Tool!

By Chet R. from Ontario

The Mesa High-Wire is a brilliant device. The buffer is the best-sounding I've ever heard (I've owned several from a variety of companies), and I like the clean boost better than my Fulltone 2B because it doesn't boost the bass so overwhelmingly as that pedal. For the first time ever, I actually like the sound and feel slightly better going through my pedalboard than directly into the amp (Tone King Galaxy)!

It's tough to complain about a box that does so much so well, however I don't like the following:

- the mute comes before the effects send, so technically your effects are still sending whatever white noise they generate while idling to your amp when the box mutes. As no guitar signal is allowed to pass to the effects, this is a minor issue and won't be even remotely noticeable on stage
- there is a slight popping noise when you go to mute (this only happens when you mute while not using the clean boost; when the clean boost is engaged the mute is silent.
- the tuner out works great, but it too is post the mute circuit, so your tuner also adds its noise to the muted sound still going to your amp.

All of the above are minor issues and won't be a problem for me either live or in the studio. The tuner send is brilliant, the 3db fixed boost is excellent, and the positioning of the jacks is perfect for bottom right of pedalboard positioning. This box kills multiple birds with one stone, and such is an amazing value. Get it!

A Pedalboard Must Have - TONE RESTORED!!!!!

By Joshwah from Aurora, CO
Music Background: Gigging Musician with not so bad day job

Let's face it, you're on the fence and not sure if this is worth it. I never knew I needed this until I had it. I was not aware of how much tone I was missing from long cable runs and multiple pedals until I used this. GET THIS NOW!! You'll notice a much fuller tone and the boost function is great to have just in case. I run all my front of amp effects through the loop of this pedal (wah, overdrive, distortion, chorus, flanger, phaser, vibrato) and run an eq, reverb and delay through my amps effects loop. I run my noise gate right after this buffer before the amp input for maximum silence. Different setups work for different players, but this setup works best for me (hours of playing around was well worth it). The best thing about this pedal is that you can tell it will last for years to come with it's build quality, it keeps your tuner out of your signal chain and has a constant +3db boost in addition to the foot switchable boost. However, speaking of build quality, the only drawback is the size is a little larger than expected - STILL WORTH THE PEDAL BOARD REAL ESTATE!! I keep the +3db on with the boost set half way for a jump if needed. Now that you're done reading this, add this to your cart and await long missed glorious tone returning to your rig! Sweetwater staff and their online ordering system are fantastic to work with and get your gear in your hands quick!

Mesa/Boogie High-Wire Dual Buffer

By N/A from Florida

A great addition to my pedal board. It really does make a difference when activated. The boost is also a great feature when you need that just a little more.
