The Helix is about control. You can do anything you can imagine. You can make an expression pedal do multiple tasks. For example, heal back and volume is at 60%, amp #1 is at 80%, amp #2 is at 20%, 15+ effects pedals are engaged and your MIDI lighting is being controlled. Push pedal down and everything changes. You can choose to use stomp pedals instead and do the same thing. Whatever you imagine. You can load up a program that you created that can have eight different sounds. Each sound has its own stomp pedal with label (Intro, Verse 1, Chorus 1, Verse 2, Chorus 2, Instrumental, and Outra). It is all about control. You can choose which input and output is for your guitar and which are for you microphone. You can process each differently at the same time. If you desire plug-n-play only, then purchasing the Helix would be like purchasing a 1000 H.P. car to drive to work.
Pros:
1. User friendly (After initial setup). I connected my laptop and the Helix allowed me to click-and-drag, double click, and make changes similar to a Windows program. It is very easy to create your own programs from scratch: add an amp, then choose your effects pedals.
2. The amps sound real. I found amps in there that I liked better than my $5000 Marshall.
3. You can purchase and upload programs and IRs from the Internet.
Cons:
1. When you initially connect your computer, you need patience. None of the advice I received from the Internet or Line 6 worked for me. I had to try different approaches to get my laptop to communicate with the Helix (Worth the hassle).
2. The control pedal has been on backorder for months. (Still, not a dealbreaker).
Suggestion: Purchase a good quality flat response speaker made for amp modeling. I bought the Electro-Voice PXM-12MP 700W 12-inch Powered Floor Monitor and I love it.
The Scoop
I bought the Helix Rack over a year ago and have developed some nice sounds from clean to screaming leads. I originally plugged it straight into a converter but started sending it through a stereo tube pre which makes it sound like an amp. Don't waste your money on buying presets because the Helix sounds best when you craft it to your specific guitar/pickups.
