ART HeadAmp 4 4-channel Headphone Amplifier Reviews

4-channel Headphone Amp with 1/4" and 1/8" I/O

Most home recordings involve from one to four people, any or all of whom are going to need headphone monitoring. The monitor amp would be connected to the tape deck's headphone output or a mixer output so that the performers can hear themselves and each other. Of course the same application can apply to band rehearsals and even home entertainment. HeadAmp 4 provides amplification and individual volume control for up to 4 headsets. It can be driven by either line-level or headphone amplifier signals (mono or stereo). The HeadAmp 4 sports a new case design (like USBPhono Plus), more features (added 1/8" I/O) and enhanced electronics.

Nicely built, very quiet, perfect I/O configuration

By Hugh Heinsohn from OR on August 23, 2022 Music Background: Amateur musician/songwriter/producer

Very nicely made unit with no discernable noise. Compact form factor but very usable. It's great that is has both quarter inch and mini-jack I/O - makes it a real winner for home studio applications and I think it's good enough that it will be useful in professional scenarios as well.

Amazing!

Perfect for a small/medium home studio

By Joseph Ellis from Forney, TX on February 20, 2021

I was looking for something that would serve the same purpose as my bigger headphone
amps but that still had the same power, and I am very happy with this one. I own other
ART gear but it had been a while since purchasing any. This one is just perfect, being no
larger than a couple of smartphones stacked on top of each other, the power from this
unit is perfect. The choice of either 1/8" or 1/4" outputs (wired in parallel) as well as the
same choice with the input is a great feature. I recommend this unit highly, and may very
well purchase another one for my studio gig bag.

HeadAmp4 - great piece of gear!

By James from Arkansas on February 8, 2021 Music Background: 55 years playing garages, bars, and churches

This little 4 channel headphone amplifier is a quality unit at a very reasonable price. The input channel and all 4 output channels have both 1/8" and 1/4" TRS connectors for incredible flexibility. Controls to blend my headphones, powered studio monitors, and practice amp are all at my fingertips. I highly recommend this little amp! It is just one more item in the ART family, which has served me for over 25 years. Quality, dependable gear at a reasonable price. What's not to love?

Transparent Signal Splits

By Dave Merkel from MT on December 25, 2020

As the title says, this little thing is transparent while providing four individual headphone feeds. Great for small sessions in which separate monitor mixes aren't needed.

Old Faithful

By Sean Wooldridge from Fort Wayne, IN on October 13, 2020 Music Background: Home Studio

I just realized I've had this thing for over a decade and have never thought about it since I originally bought it. The volume and clarity are perfectly adequate. There has never been a noisy knob or connector. I've never had a reason to look at it except to plug in a pair of headphones. The thing just works and it has for a very long time.

Great unit at a great price

Similar to other ART products I've purchased, this headphone amp is solid, effective, and affordable. It does the job nicely. Plenty of headroom. Great product.

This Rescued my I-Pad Mini

By Robert Trice Jr from Rockwell, NC on March 14, 2016 Music Background: Gigging solo musician for over 26 years

I use this device as a volume boost for my I-Pad mini that has backing tracks I recorded on Garage Band and loaded to my HP desktop with Personus then to I-Tunes then to my I-Pad. I replay the tracks in a live acoustic act that I have been doing for over 5 years. The Fishman Performer I had used for 3 years had an Aux. input that worked great because it has a level control. I bought an Acoustic Image guitar amp and it did not have that. Instead, I had to plug into the return of the vocal channel loop. I use the guitar channel loop for a pedalboard. The Mini volume at max was not loud enough!! This product was suggested as an in-line amp to boost the signal. It works perfectly. Very low noise floor, basically no noise and now all I do is set the vocal/guitar volume where I want it, then set the back track volume and it's perfect. I also use the ART Personal Monitor for my ear buds and that too is a great way to hear yourself in a noisey room. Thanks Sweetwater!!!!

Above and Beyond

By ze from NYC on April 8, 2014 Music Background: pro drummer, brasilian percussion, keyboards, composition, home studio.

I am actually blown away at the signal generated by this small--yet well constructed--unit. I just wanted something simple to carry a basic signal. Sounds nearly as good as the direct out from my DAW. Great for home studio set ups. My only desire is that it had dual Input rather than the single stereo In--would be more convenient.

Does everything I want

By Matt from Sterling Heights, MI on May 10, 2013 Music Background: Recording Engineer, Mix Engineer

Cool feature is that each channel controls a 1/4 in and a 1/8 in jack so that you can use up to 8 headphones with this. I didn't realize this when buying it so I was pleasantly surprised. Volume is ample, clarity is great, no complaints at all.

Very Nice

By RRxing from Denver on June 30, 2012

This is more then what I expected. It works great and I like the choice of 1/8 or 1/4 inch. I can use what ever I have at the time.

Works just great! Lot's a bang for the buck. Great that I have a place like Sweetwater when I need a piece of gear that works. This compact HeadAmp gives you 4 Headphone monitors with each having its own level control. Thanks to Brad Moline, Sales Engineer at Sweetwater for
his recommendation I've got just what i needed.

My Latest Gear Buys

By Ed Tooma from Strasburg, VA USA on April 25, 2012 Music Background: Recording Engineer

Thanks to Sweetwater and Sales Engineer Brad Moline, I've been able to downsize on my home studio gear and step up to "boss" quality.
I'm using the Roland Quad-Capture as my mixer, (via USB), and the Shure SM7B Dynamic Mic. I recently added a Rode NT1-A Condenser Mic and with it the ART Head Amp 4 which is a 4 channel Headphone Amp. Everything purchased from Sweetwater. Totally satisfied with the professional-studio quality I'm getting from it all., and you will be too! Great thing about it is - it'll work with most Digital Audio Workstations (DAW). When you buy your gear from Sweetwater you get personalized service and technical support. I'm totally satisfied and I know you will be too.

excellent clarity

By Jim Michaels from Vancouver, WA on July 15, 2011 Music Background: Hobbyist

this thing is great. it has all the jacks needed. my sister is using this. she is getting excellent clarity. and the fact that THIS can amp has 1/8" jacks is a very nice feature, useful for lots of things. there are many devices which have 1/8" jacks. the engineer was kind enough to mention that I might need a 1/8" CMM105 male-to-male cable to make this work with the device in question.
thanks, Sweetwater!

served me well for many years

By Czar from Nashville on June 25, 2021 Music Background: Audio Engineer

This has worked great for me for almost 10 years. I love that it does both 1/8 inch and 1/4 inch. The only thing I don't like about it is the purple on black can be hard to read sometimes

Very impressive for the price.

By Michael Quigley on January 26, 2021 Music Background: Musician and home recording studio.

I have a home studio and was in need of a headset amp. I did my homework and came up with the ART HeadAmp 4-4. It seems to be well made and sturdy. I really like having the 1/4 and the 1/8 connections. It's a nice feature that gives you various connection options. The ART amp allows me to go from my Scarlett interface and have multiple headphone controls. My Beyerdynamic DT-880 pro is 250 o and my Senal SMH-1000 is 58 o. I also run my Polsen HPC_A30's through the amp. I can get four different headphones with excellent balance to each listener simultaneously. No more people saying "It's to loud in my headset".
This is so far so good. I'm impressed with my purchase from Sweetwater. This is as advertised. If it last as long as it's supposed to then, I will give it five stars.

Everything you would want!

By G.K. from Scranton (area) on November 2, 2020 Music Background: Piano lessons for 21 years and afterwards, I haven’t touch a key in 5 years.

Hello. As a disclaimer I am probably not your average user of this product, evidenced by the photos I have uploaded. I use this "assortment" of "stereo equipment" to workout at a home gym. The issue I was having was attempting to simultaneously send the signal, received via Bluetooth, to all four pieces of "equipment" without having an awful feedback noise (the high static that lets you know there is one too many competing pieces of equipment and not enough signal to go around) and to maintain signal strength. This amp was EXACTLY what I was looking for. I can say that this immediately removed the feedback noise and provided a way to gain the signal. I can individually cut the signal to one piece of "equipment" and in the same movement increase signal to the other. If you are looking for something that allows you to split your audio signal up to four times, that provides excellent sound quality, and is relatively well priced without loss of sound quality this is the product. I would say, if you need to turn this off without turning off the rest of your personal system then, it may be slightly annoying to turn it off because there is no on or off button. For my personal application that is not an issue because everything I have is plugged into a power strip that I simply turn off when I am finished. I would say with my friend and myself at the gym, it is on for about five hours a day, sometimes consecutive and sometimes not. Otherwise this product will not let you down. It does exactly what it says it does. On another note, the customer service here is so very personalized and they really will help you with any questions you have prior to and after purchase. My personal sales assistant, yes personal sales assistant, gave me a call immediately after purchase and about one month after to just check in and answer any questions that I may have had. The company, the product, the people are amazing. If you are an audiophile, a professional, or someone who just likes quality deal with these guys.

A superb headphone amp!

By V Trekteris from Alamo, CA on June 24, 2016 Music Background: Live long musician

The ART headphone amp gives me twice as many headphone inputs than I require, I would rather have more than enough inputs than not enough inputs any day, The ART headphone amp takes care of that. It gives me four headphone 1/4" inputs to plug into plus 4 1/8" plugs as well. All are in stereo. The case it comes in is well built and should last a lifetime and of course Sweetwater was up to their usual excellence. I always get superb results from Sweetwater! All in all I am very happy with my purchase! .

Compact Power

Amateur Radio Station Code (CW) Reception is A-OK

By ROCKY MOUNTAIN MONITORING STATION from MISSOULA, MONTANA on April 24, 2017 Music Background: radio engineer/technician

We use this multi-channel headphone amplifier in a commercial monitoring station (ROCKY MOUNTAIN MONITORING STATION) and for amateur radio code reception located in Missoula, Montana. Up to four radio operators/technicians can independently/concurrently listen to HF/VHF/UHF radio communications traffic with independent audio level control. On occasion one or more of the audio channel outputs can be routed to other equipment (I.e. dual-trace oscilloscope and/or independent monitoring console) as needed.

The ART HeadAmp 4-4 Channel Headphone Amplifier works well and provides clear, crisp, distortion-free audio routing.

Have installed AC power switch to provide switchable on/off capability when needed.

Exactly what I needed

By RK Brown from Nashville on November 21, 2016 Music Background: Playing music for a living in the studio and on gigs for over 37 years.

Obviously this isn't the best headphone amplifier that money can buy, but it fit my needs, and lined up with how much money I wanted to spend on such a product at this time. It is very good. Plenty of volume level, and quiet and clean.

Great amp for the price.

By James Tavegia from Villa Rica, GA on June 22, 2015 Music Background: Vocalist, composer or sorts.

I bought an ART Headphone 4 amp a few weeks before I bought a PreSonus HP4 for my use in my studio. My cans are AKG K701's; AKG K271 mk2's, and 2 pair of Sony 7506's.

The ART is a great little headphone amp. It is slightly warmer than the PreSonus and is a good match for cans that can seem slightly bright, but that is not to say it is dull, because it is not. I would consider it pretty accurate and a great buy for $65. Does not have quite the bass extension of the PreSonus, but this will depend upon your headphones of choice and your cables. Cables do matter, so experiment.

After a few weeks of break in I am using it pretty much exclusively with my K701s which are very revealing headphones. I do wish it had either mono 1/4" ins or RCAs, as the 1/4" TRS does make it harder to match nicer cables up with it, and an inline on/off switch would have been nice, but for $65 somethings had to go to save cost, and luckily, ART chose to leave the qaulity high.

Very highly recommended, especially if you have a disc spinner with no headphone output.

perfect fit

By Sweetwater Customer on March 11, 2015

Excellent. Exactly what I was needing. The option of 1/4" and 1/8" headphone jacks was the selling point for me!

Great headphone amp

By Phil from OK on November 5, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist

Exactly what I needed. Very low (if any) noise. Very good gain (volume). I love the option to go either 1/8" or 1/4" on every channel, including the input. I use this in the studio for monitoring, and just listening to mixes. The gain on my humble equipment just didn't get loud enough, so, I tried the HeadAmp4. Not disappointed one bit. I also hooked this up to my TV. It didn't have a headphone jack. NOW, I have 4! (I used a RCA to stereo 1/8" to get from the TV to the amp). I'm a happy customer!

Heads up for your headphones

By Brent Seltzer from Studio City, CA on July 17, 2013 Music Background: Broadcaster

The electronics are outstanding and this headphone amplifier takes any set of cans with any cord. The sound is excellent. It might have been easier to use and build in to a rig if it were just a rectangular box...but it's just fine with any system.

Nice little piece of gear

By Benjamin from United States on November 19, 2012 Music Background: Semi-Pro Composer, Engineer, Producer, Performer

Very solid, well constructed, sounds good - did exactly what I needed it to for my recording session. Definitely a high performer for the price. Would recommend to anyone who has an occasional need for multiple artists in a recording scenario.

good product

By Steve Thompson from Jordan, Mn on October 18, 2012 Music Background: Serious Hobbyist

Works great for the home studio. The price was great and it came with a 2 year warranty and free shipping. Absolutely no complaints here.

Great buy for the price.

By DW Bird from Fort Wayne, IN USA on May 30, 2007 Music Background: Musician, Recording Engineer, Live Sound Engineer

For the size of this thing and what it can do, you'd be silly not to purchase it. If you have a band and are attempting to get seperate headphone mixes without any confusion, or simply want a quality monitor mix via headphones, this is the way to go. Sounds great and is small enough to forget it's there. A great buy for the price.

Good Headphone Amp

By Jeremy from Dayton Ohio on November 21, 2013 Music Background: Live Sound Engineer & Pro Musician

This headphone amp feels and sounds solid. Compared side by side with the behringer, this one is much louder. My only problem with it is the purple writing for the channel numbers is very difficult to see against the black body of the case.

It's Ok as long as you don't keep unplugguing the power

By Sweetwater Customer on August 17, 2022

Worked great. I was very happy with it. But one day it wouldn't power up after plugging it in. I discovered that the power connection in the back of the unit loosened up on the circuit board. At first I found one position where the power would stay on as long as I did not wiggle the power cord in the back. After a while though, the power just would not come on anymore. I would say once you plug it in, leave it plugged in in the back of the unit. The soldier connection is weak and takes the full force of plugging and unplugging it in. Because I wasn't planning on returning it, I tried re-soldering the loose connections but it still did not work. Buyer beware! 2-stars because it did work great at one time.

Weak 1/4" jacks

By Nick on September 24, 2013 Music Background: Live Sound Engineer, Radio

After about 2 years of using this unit in a remote setting, once a week, the 1/4" input jack failed. The solder mounts for the ground and right channel broke off of the upper circuit board. What really puzzled me was that they used 1/4" jacks with threads around the outer collar, but failed to set them in front of the rear body plate to allow them to be properly secured using a lock nut. Instead, the jacks are held in place by the signal posts and therefore take the brunt of the force applied by the normal action of inserting and removing a 1/4" plug.

If you plan on setting this up and leaving it alone forever, it's fine. But if you will be setting it up and then packing it away constantly, I would consider something with a better design.

One of other small note: the channel markings on the front (one, two, three, four) are written in dark purple letters on a black case and underneath the volume knobs. Even though the knobs are arranged in numerical order, you can't tell the users which knob to use by number, which believe it or not does cause confusion.
