Me likey

By Justin R. from Omaha, NE
Music Background: Bedroom sell out shredder

Was looking for an analog delay/reverb pedal for my pedal board into a Marshall dsl40cr, found a few for about the same price as the HX-1, i figured yeah its digital but thats alot of different sounds for the money, even if just one effect can be run at a time, it does have some modes which are basically a reverb and delay in one effect but i must say this lil think sounds phenomenal in my opinion. Lots and lots of parameters to dial in with which are fairly easy to understand what they do and how to manipulate their various features. Only thing i dont like is one effect at a time but its so good i ALMOST considered getting two, but naaaah, its definitely a great sounding unit with tons of easy to use features. A Bluetooth connection to a phone to edit the parameters would be AMAZING.

Love this thing!

By Jennifer L. from Omaha, NE

Just going through it and the best part...doesn't take a rocket scientist to use. Easy to figure out with minimal reading. The quick start guide thing gets you almost everything you need. Sounds good and flexible and easy to read the display (helpful for this old fart, ha). Built solid and just a good all'round multi-effects pedal with great in/out options. Also easy to update firmware.

HX awesome

By Lawrence B. from Ridgefield, WA
Music Background: Songwriter and guitar nerd

Sweetwater engineers are awesome! The variety of effects is staggering and most importantly they sound fantastic. I knew I would love the reverbs, delays, and modulation but I think the distortions and fuzz's are also excellent sounding. I have only ran it in stereo through two Friedman IR series preamps... sound was nothing short of stellar

Amazing for One Effect at a Tim!

By Don P. from Pensacola, FL
Music Background: Guitarist, Musician, Singer-Songwriter, Home Recorder & Producer

Does exactly what it describes and works so amazingly well with my set-up in tandem with Quilter Aviator Cub amp. Liked it so much, I exchanged for the HX Effects unit instead, so that I can use 6-9 effects at time.

Excellent

By Paul

So far the HX One is excellent. Firmware 3.8.1 seems solid, the effects sound convincing and there are plenty to choose from. Creating and saving presets is a breeze. It's midi compatible, responds to midi clock, is easy to edit, has impedance settings, runs in stereo or mono (including in a four-cable method), and has capability for two TS expression inputs (but a single TRS expression pedal works fine). It's thicker than I expected, which tells me there is a lot crammed inside. So far I've compared it to other effects, tremolo, dirt, wah, fuzz, chorus, phaser, and the HX One holds its own solidly. In particular, the wahs are very good. It's nice to be able to set the low and high end ranges while having a mix feature, which is an interesting way to blend a bit of wah to taste. The Big Muff fuzz sim sounds just as huge as my analog fuzz, the dirt offerings as convincing as my analog ODs. I've only just begun exploring and I am looking forward to diving in some more. I have Helix Native, but as a plugin I was never particularly impressed as I prefer modelers and amps outside of my DAW. But being able now to integrate those algorithms, which sounded promising, into my pedal board is a different story. Overall I'm very pleased. As for cons, I can't find any yet. Wishes? Sure. An HX Two: a dual engine version with series/parallel ordering of effects would be very cool.

The Swiss Army knife of pedals

By Sweetwater Customer

I've owned Line 6 products since the first Pod came out, and I was familiar with the effects already from my HX Stomp. I bought the HX One to sit at the end of my board and provide "that one effect" that would be needed for a song, whether it be a tremolo, a flanger or a crazy freakout fuzz. After playing with it for an hour, I was almost ready to send it back, because I couldn't see how I could use it the way I wanted. However, spending time with the manual and using the librarian helped me to set up the presets I wanted in a sequence so I could find them.

Here are my complaints: 1) I really miss having a preset number showing on the display. 2) I wish there was a dedicated knob to scroll through the presets without having to press both footswitches first (I was fortunate that I already had a dual footswitch on hand to do this). 3) As for the effects, I would say that most of them sound great, but some of the Legacy models fall short, and I wish Line 6 would either update them or replace them entirely. 3) I would like a way to re-order the presets without the librarian app (maybe there is one and I haven't figured it out yet). 4) Finally, I understand why Line 6 made all the presets default to 'on' when you switch to a new one, but it was annoying until I figured out how to save my presets to load as 'off'. It would have been unusable for me in a gig situation otherwise. My advice is to read the manual first, and install the librarian app right away, because it will save you a lot of time re-ordering and renaming presets.

Bottom line, is it better than a whole board full of cool specialty pedals that do the same thing? You know, the kind of vibey pedals that each cost almost as much as the HX One? Well, maybe, maybe not, but they wouldn't all fit on my small pedal board anyway. This is a perfect solution for me, and I don't feel there's a sonic compromise at all.

HX One not great for live applications

By William G. from Lancaster, WI

The HX One will not save in an off or bypassed state. Also it does not transmit MIDI clock data.
For me this makes it unusable for live use. Trying to contact Line 6 has also been a nightmare.
In a studio application it might be fine but on stage I don't have time to be tap dancing around turning stuff on and off while changing presets. After owning and using the HX Stomp this was a complete disappointment.

Swiss Army knife

By Rob

This pedal is great at saving space on a pedalboard. I have read were people complain about one effect at a time, I think that is where the beauty of this pedal is. If you need a chorus pedal, phaser, vibe, whatever, it's there and it sounds great. Out of all my pedals, this is the easiest one to use midi with. I have two boards, and I have one of these on each.

The one to rule them all

By David A. from PINGREE GROVE, IL

So the HX One is astonishing. Presently I'm running my peterson strobo > Hx One > Morley Fuzz Wah > POD Express. With this set up I have just today used the "Pitch Wham" to replace Digitech Whammy, the "Scream 808" to replace my Ibanes TS 808 Tube Screamer and the "Obsidian 7000" to replace the Darkglass B7K Ultra. Same settings as the real pedal and I can't tell the difference. Thats kinda nuts. The Line 6 EX1 makes the pitch shift work and that cost only $. These are just what I used this morning. Between the HX One and POD Express honestly I don't know if I'll everybuy another pedal. I have been playing Daft Punk, Megadeth, The Misfits and The Muse with this set up and I am in love because no matter what mood I'm in I can play what I want to play quickly with minimal set up. The only other pedal I will be buying would honestly just be another of these since its cheaper than both the Darkglass and the Digitech Whammy but sounds the same with a smaller foot print. What is not to love? Honestly if your reading this buy it you will thank me.

Missed it by this much

By Ross M. from Herriman, UT

The Pros. Nice sounding and compact. for the space of one pedal you get multiple Delay, Verbs, Modulations.
Great for "I need this one sound, for this one song". just replacing a reverb pedal with this gives you many so many more options
The Librarian software makes moving the presets around really easy.
onboard edting is for the most part straight forward
The Flux option looks promising

The Be Awares. won't work with every pedal power supply. Though this is true of many other effects.
Does not have editing software. Only a librarian. The Line 6 website is fairly confusing about this.
No master list of what every parameter does on every effect. This would be nice even if it was only a downloadable doc.
A bit of a tap dance to change the footswitch modes. You will need a separate dual footswitch to keep patch change and bypass
active at the same time

The Cons (and really stupids) It does NOT show the preset names on the screen. Only the names of the starting algorithm. ie. If you used the "Dual
Delay" algorithm to create three different presets named say Long, Short, and Spacey. You will only see Dual Delay
on the screen on each of these presets. You can see the preset name in a somewhat hidden sub screen and in the
Librarian software.
You CANNOT scroll through presets in bypass mode. So you here each sound as you scroll up or down. so be careful
where you put your gain presets.

These problems are theoretically supposed to be fixed with future firmware updates, and are their most requested updates. These seem like basic needs to me but as such, I can only give 3 stars. If they fix these it Its a no brainer 5 star unit. I might consider retuning it but the only similar option is the Eventide at more than twice the dough. So I will stick with it and hope for a better future

Great idea that misses the mark

By Greg from Pennsylvania

This looks great on paper but the execution leaves a bit to be desired and I ended up returning it.

First the good stuff:
- There's a HUGE variety of effects and they're generally really good.
- The Flux feature is innovative and fun.
- The power requirements are very low for such a powerful digital effect.

But the bad (and if these are changed in a future firmware update, disregard this):
- For some reason there's no way to save a preset in a bypassed state. When you change presets, the new effect is always on. This makes no sense to me and makes it a pain to switch effects during a song. This is ultimately why I returned it.
- If you want to use it in true bypass mode, the tuner doesn't work. What?? This might be a side effect of it not having analog dry-thru, meaning you don't get trails with true bypass either. The ADA conversion is pretty good here but still enough of a tone suck that I wouldn't want to leave it in DSP bypass.

Love This!

I've never used Helix or Line 6 before. This pedal sounds great. And it's perfect for what I need, which is a utility pedal for my board. I'm still figuring out all my options, but I'm liking it for my purpose. I might even get another.

Unbearable Hiss with Distortion Pedals

By Sweetwater Customer

I really wanted to like this thing. It looked like an amazing utility pedal. Unfortunately, when any distortion pedal is placed in the loop or after the HX One, there's a loud, unbearable hiss when the distortion pedal and HX One are on at the same time (or if HX One is off but in buffered bypass). This isn't the hum of gain or 60 cycles, this is white noise. This makes the pedal unusable for me.

Nice pedal but no software

By Joe D.

I was under the impression when I bought this that it had a software editor where I could edit the presets and then save/upload them to the pedal but this DOES NOT have that kind of software interface so if you are like me and want that convenience, this is not the pedal for you.

This thing is like a baby Helix. It sounds really good! Only downside is you can't combine any of the effects. But all around it's a great sounding pedal with plenty of different effects built in! I'd recommend it!

Always the Right One

By Wes B. from Kingwood, TX

I had been keeping an eye on this until ever since they were released but I just wasn't sure if it would really be useful, because you can only use one effect at a time. I decided to go for it, figuring I could at least use it for some modulation effects since I usually only want one running at a time anyway. What really tipped it over for me was the Flux switch and the fact that you can run it 4-cable into amp. In my case, the "amp" is a Boss IR-200, which does have an effects loop! This means you can run drives/dynamics in the front and send mods/dly/rvb to the loop (or whatever works for you - get crazy!) This is a great unit and the effects sound fantastic. Even the drive/distortion sound great. It is definitely worth reading the manual because some functions take some multi step operations/button presses to engage, but most of the surface level tasks were pretty intuitive to me, and it's been a long time since I have used Line 6 gear (last piece was the HD500 floor unit). This is my first introduction into the HX Line. As a plus, this runs off standard pedalboard power supplies so no special equipment needed to incorporate it into your existing setup. I bought a Demo unit and saved a little money. Well worth the purchase!

So cool

By Andrew from Chicago

This was my first time using any of the Helix line of products and I'm totally blown away. I was looking for a Swiss Army knife type pedal and this fills that perfectly. The drives sound awesome and there's really no limit on what you can create with the modulation and time based effects. I've spent a few hours with it and barely tapped into all that it can do. It's pretty simple to work. I mostly play at home so this is a great tool to experiment with different sounds but you could easily incorporate this into a gigging rig.

I A/B tested this against the EQD Plumes as that's one of the drives they recreated and it's pretty spot on. Overall this pedal has so much it can do and I think Line 6 really delivered with this one.

Great for hifi stereo effects on synths

By Ron from Princeton, NJ

I was looking for a high fidelity stereo reverb pedal for my synths. I found the offerings from UA or Strymon to be pretty pricey for only reverb or reverb + delay. The HX One seemed to offer the same effects and many more, so I bought one. In sum, it sounds terrific in stereo, has a ton of effects, is easy to use and doesn't require app pairing over bluetooth to choose additional settings/effects (ie. UA pedals). I mostly use it for reverbs or choruses (as a backup to my DC-2W in stereo), and, when I want to add a lot of character to my tone, the stereo delays or vibratos.

I particularly love that Line 6 lists the real trademarked pedal inspiration for each of the onboard emulated effects in the manual. This makes the HX One a great resource if you're new to effects and want to explore the pedal universe without having access to all the originals.

I recommend this pedal for someone seeking high fidelity sounds in stereo and who wants to explore classic effects.

LINE 6 DID IT AGAIN

By Bill from North Georgia
Music Background: 45+ years of guitar and other stuff

Once again, Line 6 has a winner. The HX One may not be the perfect pedal for everyone, but it sure hit the spot for me. Like a lot of you, I have tried a number of pedals in the search for 'that' sound. Sometimes I'm looking for something to use for only one song. This fills both spots nicely, letting me check out the different pedal sounds and when I need an Octaver or Fuzz Face, I have it. It's not a multipedal board, so for me it's a lot easier to keep organized. I simply sort the presets by pedal type in the order I usualy stack them on the board.
There are other multi-fx units, but I've been a Helix and Pod user for a while and I know these effects. Also, units like the TC Plethora (X5 or X3) don't have distortion or fuzz pedals. They also often name pedals presets after artists rather than known effects.
The HX One has three knobs to adjust FX settings, but (unlike some others) arrow keys allow you to reach other pages in the settings that can likewise be controlled by the knobs.
The most interesting and useful feature they've added is FLUX. Flux allows you to crossfade between different settings in the same effect with the tap of a single button. This is incredibly useful, as it lets you set the length of the crossfade in and out differently.
The HX One is new and has a few bugs. Knowing Line 6, most if not all of these will be fixed before you read this, so I'm not going into detail on any of that.
Lastly: Line 6 has a habit of adding new effects with firmware updates. At this time, this pedal includes all of the effects from the current Helix versions. I expect that Line 6 will continue to update the HX One along side of the Helix.
They included a looper but, as of yet, no other utilities. I would like to see a volume, simple gain, or stereo pan function controlled by the expression pedal. Recommendations that I will make on the Line 6 Ideascale site..

Great sounds, but one issue

By Sweetwater Customer

I love all the effects that I purchased this for, especially the modulation and Obsidian drive, which gets pretty close to the B7K to my ear. I have a few presets that I think any bassist would be happy with and don't have any complaints with the tones in this box.

My issue is with the flux switch. It basically allows the user a second setting within the patch you're using, which is nice for the bass octave being able to turn the dry signal off and boost the wet signal to 100% in a single switch. However, the flux switch doesn't always engage on the first try. It'll show the parameters changing but no change occurs, so you have to engage the flux three times (on, off, then on again) to get it to engage. Annoying at home but absolutely not ok in a live setting.

Other than the flux issue, this is a fantastic pedal and replaced four pedals on my board.

Major bugs and oversights make me wish I had waited...

By Zach S. from Austin, TX
Music Background: Semi-pro musician

As you may have seen elsewhere on the internet, the HX One was released with a few quirks/bugs that, had I known about them at the time it was released, would have kept me from purchasing the pedal until they were fixed. I'll summarize a few:

- MIDI Thru currently doesn't work. The Thru port only relays messages on the same channel the HX One is set to, filtering out the rest. PC/CC messages also can't be processed simultaneously.
- The Flux feature is bugged, and tends to stay on/off when changing presets instead of resetting.
- You can't control the Shuffling Looper using any MIDI commands, you have to control it on the face of the unit.
- Momentary footswitch settings are absent, which makes controlling effects like the Feedbacker awkward.

... and many more bugs are documented around TGP and Line6's forums.

Seems to me like Line6 may have rushed this thing out before the holidays. I'll be overjoyed if the above bugs are fixed, and will update my review when/if that's the case. But as it stands, I can't recommend it.

Great, but has a few quirks

By Sweetwater Customer

I think the HX One is a great pedal. The reverbs, and modulations are great, and surprisingly the overdrive/distortions are pretty accurate. I can't tell the difference between my Japanese TS-808. Timmy pedal is spot on, too. There are some quirks, though. One of the previous reviewers mentioned Line 6 doesn't use a dry analog path, pushing both the dry and wet signal through the DSP. I don't know enough about the specs to confirm what he said, but I can tell you the HX One compresses the guitar signal and can make some distortion pedals misbehave. It also tone sucks about 5% of the highs when engaged. (Also set it to true bypass mode). I use a Vertex Boost before it, which gets around the tone suck problem, but not the compression. The other issue is where to put it in your signal chain. If you want to use it for distortions, it has to be at the beginning of the chain, but say you want to to go with modulation or delay. Then you need to move it after your modulation pedals and right before your pre-existing delay, in my case a Strymon Timeline. The worst scenario is if you're using it for reverb. It has to go at the end of the chain. I haven't tried the 4 cable connection method, but I have three amps. Two with effects loops, one without. And the effects loop on one is underneath the back of the amp (Blackstar amps are quirky). So, the 4 cable route won't work for me and I currently have to move it around the board or avoid using pedals that don't flow in the signal chain with it. If you're going to buy the pedal, you have to make a choice, do I want it to be a distortion pedal, modulation, delay or reverb. You can get the most out of it putting it after your modulation pedals and before the delay, just can't use delay with the reverb. One last thing, and it's major. If you have an older PC/Mac that doesn't include a USB C connector slot, your traditional USB to USB C cable won't work. I was so ticked off and spent hours scrolling through the menu, looking for something I was missing. Then tried different cables and USB ports and multiple other Macs. Once I used my company PC with USB C to USB C, it worked. Bad move one Line 6s part.

Like Everyone else says, swiss army knife of sounds

By Sweetwater Customer

The one single effect is great! All the cool sounds are there with updates coming down to add more new effects. Robust unit and plenty ins and outs to run in stereo or 4 cable method. The flux control is really cool to use to spark your creativity.

Only spent a few days with it but will get more and more use out of it. If you are looking for a DM4 Pro like the Edge has, this can easily fit the bill.

Analog man checks out the new wacky digital pedal

By Michael B. from Portland, OR
Music Background: Professional Musician and Educator

I'm an unashamed purist when it comes to guitar playing and rigs. Having spent 30 years plugging a guitar straight into a tube amp, it feels like home when the guitar and amp create that magical symbiotic sound. I prefer to use analog pedals when possible. The only digital pedals I've kept are the Strymon Flint and El Capistan because of their relative simplicity, inspiring textures, and analog dry thru (except the Flint's tremolo).

HX One does not have analog dry thru and I can feel/hear it. Like the Flint, many modulation and other effects wouldn't work without the full A/D conversion. I find that when the dry signal is converted, I lose some dynamic response, tone, and everything seems a little compressed. If the HX One did have analog dry thru for reverbs and delays I'd be grateful. I've noticed that leaving my Bad Bob boost on at unity in front of the HX One repairs some of the tone loss.

Ok now the good. There are many useful sounds! Although I still prefer my analog modulation and delay pedals, it's nice to have them on tap in the HX One for that one little part in a set. Listeners could careless if it's my vintage script phase 90 or analog chorus as long as it's in the ballpark. I'd say that the HX One gets me 75% of the way there.

I don't play music that requires those epic ambient delays and reverbs, but they sure are fun to mess around with at home. You can get lost in an ocean of galactic reverb whale calls and space invading delays. The pitch effects and guitar synth sounds are wild too. It's all good fun. Not very practical tho for traditional rock, blues, or country.

The pedal interface and setup is simple enough. You can limit the preset amount which is nice, because who needs 250 sounds to play 15 songs? I do wish you could organize your favorite effects into groups or hide the existing effects you won't use. That way when you enter the delay folder, it would be your 3-5 favs and reduce option paralysis.

I'm going to keep the HX One around for it's utility, fun factor, and value. Yes, I know I can spend twice as much and have a zillion more sounds in the HX Stomp. But, I'd rather spend more time playing the guitar with a few pedals & amp, and less time programming. I've tried that and it just doesn't work for me in the heat of the moment. I can't be menu diving at gigs and rehearsals when I'm needing to be creative and connect with other musicians. Check out the HX One, I'm sure you'll hear something you dig.

Great Swiss Army Pedal

By Adrian from IN

I sold a chorus pedal that cost as much as this one pedal. It's nice to have more than just chorus pedal in one pedal.

The added noise gate is a great plus. Over all really easy to use and save presets.

The only knock I have is wishing it had a "pog", if it's there I've yet to find it.

Other than that, all the drives, delays, mod and other effects sound amazing!

Line 6 could have made this work

By Keith from Florida
Music Background: Teacher

The best digital effects and processors will have a true analog path for the dry signal, with only the "effect" part being all digital. The HX One sends everything through the digital AD and DA converters. This presents a problem. All of my digital gear is either Strymon or Meris, both of which use an analog path. Therefore, there is no latency when you hit the strings. The HX Stomp, when I introduced it to my rig, exhibited a noticeable latency, or delay, from the time you pluck the strings to the time you hear that attack through the speakers. It is like standing 20 feet from the speaker, and I've never experienced this from a piece of gear. The effects sound good, but the feeling is so strange to me that I had to return it. Line 6 have openly admitted they don't use an analog path for their products, and it is a real shame. This could have been a winner.
