Shockingly good bass and midrange performance for the money
For $ I was very impressed with just how well these handle the midrange and bass. Very crisp and clear.
Replacement needed 6 yrs later.
Going on the 4th set of these iconic cans. Mine have been loved and look too raggedy. My LG V30 can push these hard. Was recently on a 9 hr flight. All the Bluetooth ppl freaked out. I'm still dropping the thundering base. I use them for my telemedicine business.
Great for my dual keyboard workstations!
I've been a long time user of the Audio-Technica phones, primarily the ATH-M50X's - have two of them for recording and for my basses/effects pedals. They are great phones in their own right, but I also have two Korg workstations hooked up via a Mix-5 mixer for dual, independent controlling. Some of the synth bass and vintage rezo type programs are sonically very potent and can challenge even the best of phones. So I asked my go to guy Cameron for some advice and he recommended the HDJ-X7's. Yeah, these are exactly what I needed - they go all the way down to 5HZ, which as Cameron pointed out, human hearing caps at about 20hz. However, the seem to provide a bit more headroom in the bass range and are just what the doctor ordered. I will say that the 50X's are probably slightly more transparent and sonically clearer in the mid to upper frequency range, but the X7's provide a bit more of a consistent flat range from the overall spectrum from bass to treble, if that makes sense - JMO. They're both great sets of phones in their own right. But these are really comfortable, and thanks to Cameron and Sweetwater for their excellent service, as usual! Oh, just one minor little complaint, I wish the cords they provide are longer - only 5'2" and 3'9" - with my keyboards and stands, maybe a 10' would be better. The 50X's come with that length, but no biggie, it still works, a bit tight with the stretching, maybe I'll explore getting a longer one, if compatible. But yeah, these are really good headphones!!
Killer headphones for my specific need
I use phones, in particular the Audo Technica ATH-50X' primarily for audio inter-face recording, bass guitars with multi-effects pedals, and my synth workstations, plus the usual music listening. As good as the 50X's are, I felt like I needed a set with a bit more of a lower end bass response and capability for the two synth workstations, a Korg Karma and Korg TR, which are combined with a Mix-5, five channel mixer to independently sync the two together, so I get separate sounds from each via the phones. These are both high level, older monster synths, which can really pump out a ton of sonic input, in particular with the rezo, Oberheim type bass patches, and other pads which can really put phones to the test. My buddy Cameron at Sweetwater recommended the HDJX7K's to me, and as he put it, " the human hearing range is 20Hz to 20kHz, the HD's go down to 5Hz, which some would say wouldn't make a difference, but at that little but of lower end, it allows for the lowest end to breathe more as there's just a bit more headroom." I couldn't have said it any better, and it makes perfect sense. So, my initial reaction after plugging these in was WOW! Holy smokes, yes, I can tell the difference. especially at the low end! The first thing I had to do was to turn down the master volumes on the synths at least by a quarter, that's how loud these are. So how would I compare these to the ATH-50X's? First of all, I love the ATH-50X's, I own two of them, and I've purchased the same for my kids for music instrumentation as well. I will say this, and this is very picky and subjective, but to me, the ATH-50X's have a bit more of a transparency with the mid's to high's, maybe a bit more sparkly and crisp, and it puts out nice bass as well. With the HDJK, I'm hearing what I'd call more of a consistency with the overall flat range from low's to high's with the "extended bass headroom," as Cameron put it. Hope this makes sense. They are very powerful and sonically excellent! I'm so glad I purchased these for my keys. Thanks to Cameron for his usual stellar recommendations!!
