Perfect for ground loops caused by two-amp setups and stereo pedals

By Robert Gramacy from BLACKSBURG, VA on March 15, 2024 Music Background: Post-covid guitar enthusiast

I'm sure that this doesn't cure all hum woes. But it worked for me. I had a ground loop issue that was caused by two amps connected to a stereo Strymon Zelzah (phaser) pedal. This device, plugged into just one of the two amps, solves it. Sweetwater was, unfortunately, not super helpful in tracking down this device, despite it being a prominent issue on Reddit and other places. Two weeks of emails back and forth with my tech and with guitar support and I got nothing. Eventually I had to just buy it and try it.

Turns out that Strymon has a whole page on this issue. I won't put the link here, because I think that's not allowed, but you'll find it if you Google "What's that Sound: Noise and Your Signal Chain". If you have the kind of situation described by Strymon on that page, then this device will fix it. If you don't, this might not help (which I think explains some of the other, negative reviews). I haven't noticed any tone suck. But I don't have a good ear for that sort of thing.

I understand from reviews on other major retailer's cites that gamers also like it too, because it helps eliminate a ground loop that happens when you have your high end audio and video devices plugged into the same equipment (like a PS5 or gaming PC) and the same mains outlet.

Thing is amazing

I love this thing, however it works it's awesome. Using it for stereo guitar preamp and it removes all hum

Wow

Six years of buzzing, creaking and fizzling when running anything that made my computer (particularly GPU) draw power. By the end I was about ready to get a Masters degree in electrical engineering, I'd done so much research on ground loops and power issues in my setup. I had replaced my computer, monitor, interface, cables (XLR, TRS, the works), fiddled with my wiring, and adjusted just about everything except for what I couldn't change: The number of available plugs to go into and power groups in my house.

Now, there may have been some other way to solve my issue, but WHO CARES? This little box solved it immediately, no more ground loop. I ordered it along with two short 30cm TRS cables (maybe go for 40cm if you have the choice, allows for a little more freedom in positioning).

I almost want to buy a second one right away for recording. Maybe I will. The world is my oyster because guess what, it costs literally $. And why should it cost more? It's two transformers in a metal box.

And for those worried about loss in sound quality, or the supposed 'audiophiles' claiming a noticeable difference, check out this thread where someone tested and found basically no discernable difference above 30Hz:

Thank you, Behringer. Up until now I wasn't a fan, but this box is changing my mind fast.

I’m stunned

I never fathomed my vintage fender amp and pedal chain could be so silent. The only noise is that which you intend. Otherwise you could hear a pin drop. I mounted mine up and behind like a power supply would on my board and it took away zero pedal space. I have my TU-3 going into it then out to the balance of the chain. Wow. Just wow.

JUST THE TICKET!!!!

I love these things! I have tried several other units some cheaper... Don't waist your money. Buy this one! No matter when I used this thing it works. If it doesn't work, check to make sure you are not running your power cords parallel to your 1/4 inch guitar/keyboard cords. Or check your power source itself. Many times when you play in a place that has dimmers on the lights, you will get a hum. This has nothing to do with your 1/4 inch lines. In this case you need a power conditioner. In that case I highly recommend the ANTI-HUM EBTECH unit in conjunction with this one.

Wow

Didn't Work for my application

By John from Camarillo CA on October 22, 2018

I'm giving this review not for the product but for the staff at Sweetwater.
These people have their stuff together for sure, much better than the other mail order
purchases I've made .
Sweetwater will continue to be my go to place to buy gear online .

Works Great

We had a bad AC hum when plugging up a laptop to our projector and sound system. We put the HD400 in line and instantly the hum went away. Quick, easy, and cheap fix to our ground loop problem.

Behringer Hum Destroyer is fantastic

By David Martin from DARIEN, CT on February 28, 2024

I have a fairly complicated rig with 2 amps, one of which is stereo, so effectively a wet/dry/wet setup with 2 amps instead of 3. The potential for ground loops or other sources of buzz/hum is high with a rig like this and I had a really annoying hum on my stereo amp. The Behringer knocked it right out. I love that the device is passive so doesn't need any of the power outlets on my board. Honestly, I tried it because I knew Behringer makes great equipment, and at $ (even if you couldn't return it) it seemed like a worthwhile shot before moving on to more expensive approaches. As soon as I ran through this device the hum was gone.

It works

I had buzzing from acoustic guitar pedal to PA and it cleaned it up perfectly. Easy as it gets.

Not this one

I like Behringer equipment and own a lot of it. This little "Hum Destroyer" is two teeny tiny audio transformers in a metal box, I know because I've been designing and making audio transformers since 1989. I bought one of these to see if it actually had transformers in it. An audio transformer is the only way to get galvanic isolation between two pieces of equipment. A transformer is a magic tool for breaking ground loops.

If you buy one of these and it works for you, that is great and I'm happy for you.

In my lab testing this box seriously degrades the audio in terms of frequency response and reduced level. Bass response becomes distorted as you approach 0-dBu signal level. If you put one of these in series with your PA output the sound quality will be noticeably degraded.

Low priced but quality American made transformers for this application will run you 20-30 dollars each plus connectors plus a steel enclosure for shielding. Jensen audio transformers would be more like $... each. Cinemag would be similar in price.

This piece is one that Behringer has been offering for a long long time but it's time to revisit this and have their KT/Midas engineers give the design a serious upgrade. I think they could probably upgrade the transformers to match the 0-dBu signal level handling of the X32 and still sell this box for... then many many users could benefit and reduce hum without trashing their tone.

Give it a try, it's really cheap and maybe you'll like it. There are positive reviews although I'm suspicious of the users ear-training.

As it is this one is a dud for me but I still think Uli is up there with Steve Jobs and Elon Musk as an innovator.

Good music to all!

Useless

By Adriano from LYNN, MA on October 10, 2023

I bought this pedal awhile back and have given it a chance but every time I try to use it I hear AM radio through my amp.

why even bother

By Asher from chicago on April 13, 2023 Music Background: Wearer of many hats

As someone else has mentioned, this thing doesn't have any transformers, so it is incapable of isolating (removing hum). In fact, you will lose signal strength (low end thins out and you get harsh spikes, noise floor shoots through the roof...

and guess what? IT ADDS HUM! hah! I would have given two stars if it were just an empty enclosure... but this product manages to do literally the opposite of what it's supposed to do! It would have been better if it did nothing.

Why bother manufacturing this? There's cheap gear and then there's gear straight from the depths of hell..... surely someone is having a good long laugh over at Behringer. This is a joke.

It works, but.....

By Frobie from Findlay, OH on May 11, 2015 Music Background: Active, gigging, Bassist- Live Sound Engineer

This unit is made of very light gauge metal and the connectors are of very low quality. If you plug/unplug cables into this frequently you will eventually end up with intermittent connections. It does eliminate hum at times but other times it actually boosts it (?) I have Behringer processing gear that has served me very well for many years through many gigs without issues but this is absolutely NOT a good buy. Save up and buy the Ebtech model.
