Darkglass Harmonic Booster Clean Bass Preamp Pedal Reviews

Preamplifier Pedal for Electric Bass, with 3-band EQ

With precision control over harmonics and filtering, the Darkglass Harmonic Booster pedal is a great way to fine-tune your electric bass to fit in practically any mix. While it does generate glorious harmonic content, the Harmonic Booster is decidedly a low-gain, “clean” preamplifier that allows you to add life to your bass tone without losing punch or definition. Attack and presence are emphasized, and the parametric midband EQ makes it simple to add girth and punch. Whether you’re performing or recording, Sweetwater can highly recommend the Darkglass Harmonic Booster for simple-yet-powerful tone shaping.

This IS the Sauce you’ve been looking for!

By Sweetwater Customer on August 4, 2023

After a lot of reading and comparing options, I decided to go with the dark glass harmonic booster originally to be used as an EQ'able solo boost for electric bass in a loud band… which it totally excels at.

However, I was blown away at how it also excels at being an "always on" pedal both for my upright bass, and and other old classic basses that need a little more TLC to fully dial-in their sweetness.

Instead of relying on any given sound man to know how to correctly mix an upright bass for Jazz (which can vary), I can now dial-in a signal so strong and completely balanced, most can just leave the board EQ practically straight up at 12 o'clock and let it sing!

This pedal has also made my older basses, such as my 1976 Ric, much easier to gig with now because I can so easily dial-in everything I need at the source before going into any unfamiliar amp or PA…. They have seriously never sounded sweeter in decades as they do now!

This pedal has renewed my interest in playing out with any and all of my older basses, and just my most recent favorite go-tos.

Big Tone Improvement

I don't use a lot of pedals. However, this one is a must for breathing life into my tone. Yes, I already have great gear.

I've been missing out! Rock Solid - Beautiful and Simple - Incredible Sound

By Robert Kent Haines from Fort Wayne on December 29, 2020 Music Background: 20+ years Cover Band, Memphis, Tennessee

I've been playing thru a MarkBass CMD121 combo for years - I've always absolutely loved the sound! I always used the onboard DI when needed (which was very rare since the MB with an extension cab packs 500 watts) and thought nothing of it.

Then I ditched the big PA and 15 passenger van for a couple of Bose L1s and a Mackie digital mixer carried around in a Chevy Volt. The Volt is roomy, just not quite enough for full comfort with enough PA for a 4 piece band, so the MarkBass is out and I'm trying to plug into the mixer directly with mixed results, mostly poor.

The Darkglass solves the connection to the mixer yet offers so much more - it offers excellent management over the pure, clean sound of my bass without what to me is the distraction of distortion/compression/etc. It does this while offering a nice full, stable signal for the Hi-Z input on the mixer. This allows me to focus on the effects and sounds and automation available thru the computer with confidence in the base sound I am starting with - very liberating!

The design is simple and clean and focused on the pedal's purpose which is to pre-amplify, add inherent character as desired, and control tone focusing most on midrange frequencies that can make or break great bass tone! The pots are rock solid and slow to turn reducing tho not completely preventing unwanted adjustments in the bag or from an unwanted kick on stage - they have the kind of resistance I love!

I really appreciate the no disposable battery option yet I do wonder about a lithium ion option? I expect the pedal is highly recyclable yet still contains heavy metals anyway. Perhaps this is a safety feature as lithium ion is known to combust or explode unexpectedly. Yet with the diversity of available power sources today and the fact one will have other power needs as well, especially with bass, this is most often a minor inconvenience at most.

Overall I love it. It impresses me with its simple, solid design, great looks, incredible sound, and environmental consideration.

Well Done!

Boost or Preampp

Love for all toneshaping needs. I use a different preamp pedal, but this works in a pinch. Fantastic, quiet boost.

Best yet

I just dig this pedal. Great tone shaping and such. It just makes my tone pop.
