Behringer HA-40R-UL 1x10-inch 40-watt Combo Amp Reviews

40W, 2-ch Guitar Amplifier with VTC Tube Modeling, Reverb, and 10" Bugera Speaker

Let's face it, lugging around your vintage stack isn't always an ideal option for practice. With the Behringer HA-40R-UL 1 x 10-inch 40-watt Combo Amp, you get instant access to shockingly realistic tube tones in a lightweight, wallet-friendly package. The core of this amp's sound rests in its VTC (Virtual Tube Circuit) technology, Behringer's groundbreaking answer to reproducing the fat, saturated sound of a tube amp in a portable combo. Its two channels are switchable with a footswitch when plugged into the front-panel jack, and the highly musical 3-band EQ makes it easier than ever to dial in your favorite sounds. You can leave the pedals at home, too, with the built-in genuine spring reverb going from subtle reflections to spaced-out ambiance with the turn of a knob. Best of all, the HA-40R's headphone jack lets you practice with cranked tones in peace, with an auxiliary input for jamming along with songs and a Line Out with cabinet simulation to capture excellent recordings. For high-quality sound and grab-and-go functionality, plug in to the Behringer HA-40R-UL 1 x 10-inch 40-watt Combo Amp.

Excellent amp

By DSS from SATX on August 4, 2023

The HA-40R is a quality piece of equipment. It's more than loud enough to keep up with drums, the spring reverb is a great touch, and the clean and overdrive sounds are impressive. Good pedal platform and I'd recommend the amp for practice and small gigs/venues. Well worth it.

Get One If You Can!

By Sweetwater Customer on March 17, 2023 Music Background: experienced

Most combo amps at this level/price do not have an option to add an extension cabinet but this one DOES! If you pair this amp up with a 1x12 extension cabinet it opens up the sound. The 1x12 extension cabinet I use with this amp has a Celestion Vintage 30 (8 ohms). Speakers contribute to an amplifiers overall tone. Most people don't even think about that. The amp itself is solid and has large sturdy knobs that don't feel cheap. This thing is great for running a pedal chain into the clean channel!! Plenty of volume to rock the house but quiet enough for bedroom/late night jamming.

Solid amp

gets pretty loud for a little guy. recommend

Great bargain amp

By Sweetwater Customer on March 10, 2023 Music Background: experienced

This is perfect for a beginning guitar player. Super loud but also quiet when you need it to be. No hiss or 60 cycle hum with this one. Love the EQ with treble/mids/bass for tone shaping. The clean channel is bright and takes pedals very well. That alone makes this amp worth it. Tubes are expensive. This is a decent solid state alternative. Solid construction yet portable enough to gig with. The Marshall style knobs are a cool touch. The OD/dirt channel can break things up from blues to classic rock tones. Everyone has a different ear so my opinion is subjective at best. All I can say is that I am glad I purchased this item and I mainly use it with many different pedals on the clean channel. This price won't break anybody. :-)

Tube Tone on a Budget

By Zachary Shery from Jersey City, NJ on October 9, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist.

I stopped searching for "authentic" tube tone in a solid state amp a long time ago, and began discerning what type of sound I preferred. The Orange Crush/Crush Pro series satisfied my saturated distortion fix, and the Fender Mustang LT did an excellent job of emulating clean to gritty tones.

I purchased the Behringer HA-40R to jam and play small gigs with (as well as for the real spring reverb!). The tone and responsiveness exceeded my expectations. For the money, I have not heard a more "tube-like" sound. The drive channel pushed past noon leaves something to be desired, but it is quite natural sounding prior to that.

Take a chance on this amp. You won't be disappointed.

Absolutely Killer

By Jackson C on July 27, 2021

At this price, I'd have been happy if the amp was just ok but I was truly blown away with the quality and the value for money. I couldn't tell you how "close" to a tube amp it sounds, but I can tell you that it sounds really, good.

I was especially impressed by the clean channel. It has a very articulate, bass-forward response which I really enjoyed. And while I wasn't anticipating all that much from the overdrive channel but was very pleasantly surprised. It ranges from mild crunch to a pretty aggressive distorted sound with a responsive gain control.

Additionally, this amp takes pedals well. An effects loop would have been nice but can hardly be expected at this price point, given the attention to detail in other areas. The built-in spring reverb is quite nice and can be controlled with a latching footswitch.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the drive channel doesn't sound good through headphones. The clean channel sounds fine though, so the headphone jack isn't a total waste. It gets pretty loud quickly so remember that if you live in an apartment or like to play late at night.

Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase and would definitely reccomend that anyone looking for a high-quality amp at an affordable price.

Exceeded my expectations

By Killustrator on June 25, 2021

As a bassist interested in splitting my signal out to two amps (bass and guitar), I bought this little Behringer more as an experiment. There are seemingly identical low-price amps on the market from other manufacturers (Glarry being one of them), so I didn't really expect much in quality or performance, especially from Behringer, a company known to produce knock-offs. However, I was dead wrong. This little amp kicks butt! It's well-made, solid, and produces great sound…. LOUD, without any cone clipping. It has a nice overdrive setting to really dial in the level of distortion you prefer, and the spring reverb adds the perfect final touch. You'd be hard pressed to find a better 40w amp at this price point.
Extremely satisfied with it!

Great Pedal Platform with Spring Reverb!

By Brian Adkins from Dallas, TX on June 10, 2021

I love this amp so much. Wanted to get a new amp but couldn't pay a huge amount. I found this and figured I would give it a shot. The sound is rich and full with a 3-band equalizer. Haven't messed around much with the drive settings, but they sound fine. The coolest part is that there is a real, drippy spring reverb in there. Having so much fun with this amp!

Good for small gigs

By Jim Frost from Columbia, SC on June 17, 2022 Music Background: Life long guitar player

Having 40 watts is good for small gigs. No 60 cycle hum or static at all. Very Clean sound. Light Weight, easy to carry.

Brilliant little amp but not a practice amp.

By Paul Hartman from TUSCALOOSA, AL on January 4, 2022

If you are looking for a small quiet practice amp, you DO NOT want this particular version of Behringer's HA series of amps. You will want to look more at the HA-20 and the HA-10. This amp seems more intended for gigging musicians than as a practice amp. At full blast, This amp can rattle all of the windows in my house. My ears were ringing for a little while after that test. At more reasonable volumes, however, it does not sound quite as good. It still sounds better than anything else I have tried in the $ range. But yea, The best sound I found was with the volume at about 6 or 7, which is entirely too loud for my use case. But it does sound incredible.

The headphone out helps with the way too loud problem. This output has a cab emulation that sounds different from what the Bugera speakers put out but sounds pretty good.

This amp sounds incredibly good on the clean channel. The eq and volume pots are smooth, with no crackling and the three-channel equalizer made it easy to go from really god awful tones to really sweet tones.

The spring reverb goes from adding a lovely bit of additional presence to well beyond the surf tones of the sixties.

Distortion is not my thing, but I could dial in any tone I wanted from any album I have ever listened to pre 1960's. I don't have pedals for tones after that era. Sorry, I tend to be more interested in the sound of Chet Atkins, Roger Miller, and Jerry Reed which is more on the clean side.

All in all, this is a great amp made better by the fact that they don't want a lung and both kidneys for it. If you need to be LOUD, this may be the amp for you.

Great for the price

By David Barwick from Joplin, MO on January 26, 2023

At first I wasn't blown away by this amp. Strangely, it was only after I got a "nice" amp (Fender Deluxe Reverb) and then eventually went back to this one on a lark that I really started to appreciate this affordable little beast. It takes pedals well and sounds good on its own. Speaker size contributes a lot to the sound of an amp, and I don't think this will ever sound as full as a 12" speaker (although you can hook this amp up to an external cabinet if you wish). But a 10" speaker can still stand on its own in an amp. There's nothing wrong with it; it's just different. I've had a lot of fun with this amp as a change of pace from my much more expensive Fender.

I'll say that I still don't care much for the dirty channel on this amp, but you can throw an overdrive in front of it and still get good-to-great sounds. And maybe you'll like the dirty channel and get a bonus there.

No footswitch

By Jeffrey Campbell from Cincinnati, Ohio on May 25, 2022 Music Background: 55 years, guitar.

This is a great amp, with great reverb, but it comes with NO FOOTSWITCH - typical for Behringer.
I've been through three footswitches trying to find one that works, no luck. The staff at Sweetwater was no help in the matter. It requires a two-button footswitch with a stereo 1/4" plug. Easy to find, impossible to make work. HOWEVER - so what, right? Great amp.

reverb makes loud hum/feedback sound

By andy from miami on January 28, 2024 Music Background: guitarist for over 40 years

I just got the amp and out of the box, the reverb is feeding back, with all other controls turned off.....
it plays fine with NO reverb, but I didnt pay for an amp that sorta works.....lets see how long it takes to gewt it replaced...and then see if that one works any better....bad start.

Beyond disappointed. 2 for 2 not working

By Spamneggsncheese on February 16, 2023

So, got my first one, and , it did nothing but hum obnoxiously. Plugged in my guitar, and no change. Horrible. Sweetwater was great at exchanging it. It was done in a relatively Timely manner. I received the replacement today and as soon as I got it home I plugged it in and it did not even turn on. Talk about not only being very disappointed at having two units that don't work, now I have to go through this again. Ugh. I really wanted to love this amp.

BEHRINGER HA-40R

By BRUCE OBRIEN on February 3, 2023

NOISY! i didn't get past THAT. stars? it may be worth more than one, but why bother trying when it's NOISY?

Junk

By Don Lessnau from Redford on November 19, 2021

Save your money. I bought two of these amps. One from Sweetwater and a second from another retailer. In both cases, neither one would work...right out of the box. They're garbage.
