Great take on the Tube Screamer

By Chris from Wisconsin on July 14, 2023

Really nice take on the Tube Screamer circuit with a lot of added versatility. Pretty solid TS in the "Classic" mode with the switch up and the two additional tone controls out of the circuit, but the pedal really shines for me with the switch down and those added controls in the mix. I like a fat TS sound with more bottom end. One of my favorites has been the Shin's Double Trouble, but that is a $ dual Tube Screamer pedal....so not cheap. The right side of that is my favorite TS sound I was able to dial this in to match pretty close and in some ways it's even a little better. Run the 100hz and 500hz around 2 o'clock and the tone rolled off to 10:30 and that's the sound for me. Big, fat, and warm. The feel of the footswitch on these larger format Way Huge pedals is the best there is, such a nice feel and silent switching. I love that these still use full size through hole components for the audio signal path. No SMD parts here (except in the switching relay system daughter board). Impressive quality pedal for a steal of a price!

This thing rules! Pick one up if you are looking for that "Green Overdrive Sound"

I have tried many "Green" overdrive pedals and this one is the best. I really like how you can adjust the tones and it's beefy without sounding squished. Also great build quality! A great sounding overdrive pedal with lots of tonal options (probably not for metal unless you use it as a solo boost) but you can cover any genre: rock, country, blues, funk, classic rock. I use this for all of my lead guitar gigs with bands and it's never let me down. This thing rules!

Wicxked

Saw it on Mike Mccready's board and had to have. Glad I added it to my board as my sound/tone is finally close to what I hear in my head. Have only had it a few weeks and there is so much to explore. Have not noticed any unwanted noise and stacks nicely with my blues driver and raijin cajun OD.

Awesome

If you’re on the fence with a screamer and other ODs,but can’t find that silver bullet. Get this. I am not a screamer guy. But stumbled across this pedal by chance. Can’t say enough good things about it. You can get your near typical screamer. But better. And it tweaks about nicely. Giving you a really sweet natural OD that is in screamerish territory. But it is no screamer.. Dime everything and the clean notes and definition still chime through. Very musical and inspirational. Your amp is still your amp. Just wow. Great pedal. Found the OD I have been searching for for years. Wish I could have found it sooner..

The Definitive Tube Screamer

By Larry Tucker from Henryetta, OK on September 21, 2019 Music Background: 80's Metal Lead Guitar since 1987

This is the ultimate 'Tube Screamer'. It has a classic setting which is very reminiscent of the original, but then it also can switch into a more modern, more intense OD with variable boosts of 100hz and 500hz. Phenomenal sounds.
As far as the build quality, it's top end. Metal chassis about 2" in thickness, about 4" wide and 4.5" tall. Looks impressive on a Pedalboard. The dials are all high quality as is the footswitch. Absolutely my favorite OD pedal.

Great Pedal

By Steve from Dallas on July 7, 2019

This is probably the most versatile tubescreamer style of overdrive I've owned. But, this pedal has its own sound going on. It doesn't sound like a screamer but it kind of has the same vibe. This one thickens up the tone and is darker/warmer compared to other tubescreamer type of pedals I've tried. Great build quality. I've owned 3 wayhuge pedals. They've all been great. No exception here. I like the new smaller size. It is better for my board. I would say it is a little bit bigger than say a boss pedal. If you owned a regular way huge pedal, this is a lot smaller than that.

This rhino is like a modded screamer with more volume, more gain, more tone range, and 2 EQs. The classic and normal setting sound very similar. The main difference between the two is the in normal position there is a little bit more top end and you get control over the EQ. The 500Hz lets you fully scoop or boost to where it sounds a cocked-wah filtered sound. The 100hz lets you get the bass cut of a tubescreamer, or boost to the point your amp will rumble. Works great for stacking with amps, or other dirt and fuzzes while thickening up the tone a little bit. All in all great pedal. Can't go wrong with it.

The search for the perfect OD has come to an end

Such a great pedal- great tone and very versatile. It just replaced my TS9 and OCD...it also couples nicely with everything I"ve tried.

This pedal is a charging RHINO!

By Steve Pirie from Milton, MA on March 28, 2019 Music Background: Old Rock 'n' Roll Dog

Just spent 1 1/2 hours playing this Green Rhino. Given all the knobs, it's a controllable beast, though. The two small knobs - which fine-tune the Treble and Lower Mids - make all the difference with this pedal, along with the Vol., Tone and Drive. All controls are very responsive, even to small tweaks. The toggle switch (in the up position- "Classic") takes away the galloping charge of the Rhino. (It also takes away most of the fun, so I'm leaving it alone.)
Even when it's running at nearly full-bore, the notes are focused (singly or in power chords) and there's some great harmonics going on, too. Setting the Tone down, didn't make it muffled or mushy. The Green Rhino gave some nice body to my Strat and Tele when playing in the bridge pickup position. (The on/off switch is easy and quiet - doesn't require a heavy foot to work it.)
If you LOVE overdrive and distortion, this pedal is a "must have."

Best Value "Green" Overdrive!

By Sam from Huntsville, AL on December 26, 2018 Music Background: Hobbyist / Gig on Weekends

For the money, this is the most versatile Tube Screamer style OD on the market. I purchased this pedal about 9 months ago, and it has earned a permanent spot on my board (at least until MkV comes out!).

To start off, the pedal itself is SOLID (as all Way Huge Pedals are). The knobs feel reassuring, and the green metallic-flake finish looks beautiful in person. The controls are very intuitive and easy to interact with. There's plenty of volume on tap to slam the front of your tube amp with, and the drive will go from subtle crunch to thick, gooey, harmonically rich saturation. The tone/frequency controls are also amazing and really help you sculpt the drive tone you're looking for.

My favorite setting is volume slightly boosted, drive around 10 o'clock and tone cranked, with the 500Hz knob cut slightly and the 100Hz boosted to around 3 o'clock. This gives me a great boosted drive for rhythm tones; there's this awesome, ballsy low end 'chunk', but the overall tone stays relatively thin and doesn't get muddy. For leads, just bump up the drive and 500Hz knobs, and you'll be treated with a searing, harmonically rich tone that won't get harsh or ice-picky--even with the tone dimed.

With the Green Rhino, I never got the feelings of buyer's remorse that I have with other drive pedals (*cough* klones are one-trick ponies *cough*). I fell in love with this pedal right out of the box, and it continues to be my most consistently used drive pedal!

Authentic Tubescreamer tone, and MORE!

By Jon Archambault from Charlevoix, MI on June 19, 2017

This is a great sounding OD with excellent tone and dynamics. The OD sound inspires, and the way the pedal breaks up feels really good under your fingers when you play. I was looking to expand on the frequency range of my vintage Tubescreamer, and the Green Rhino gives me exactly what I am looking for. I'm very happy with this pedal.
I use Strats and Teles mainly, plugged into vintage Fender Amps.
Other OD's I use are: A vintage Anologman modded TS-808 Ibanez Tubescreamer, a Seymour Duncan 805 OD, a Keeley Red Dirt OD, an Xotic BB Preamp Comp, A Hermida Audio Zendrive, and an Analogman King of Tone. This Way Huge Green Rhino pedal holds it's own in tone and quality with all of my pedals, and it's the one Tubescreamer type OD I keep on pedalboard.
I'd also like to mention and thank Dave Walent for his excellent customer service.
When it comes to customer service and overall excellence, Sweetwater is a standout in the music industry. Thank you for all you do!

Excellent as boost or all by it's lonesome.

By electrojonez from Tinley Park, IL on May 1, 2017 Music Background: At-home player for over 20 years.

I primarily like to play heavier stuff like Soundgarden, the Melvins, Tool, Black Sabbath, Sleep/High on Fire, Red Fang, Kyuss/QotSA, Royal Blood, etc.

I was struggling to decide on something to put in front of fuzzes, distortions and other overdrives to complement and add clarity to those pedals (especially those that I like muddy at times, but still want the option of adding clarity and more gain). I was looking at boosts and different types of overdrives (mainly between the EHX Soul Food, Tube Screamer or Blues Driver - all offer up something a little different in the frequency range department).

I took a chance on the Green Rhino after not really finding what I was looking for in terms of online demo videos (confident I'd be able to return it to Sweetwater without issue).

Well, I was very pleasantly surprised. I'm primarily using this as a boost and/or light overdrive (just beginning to tap into the higher gain level). I use it with the LEVEL set to noon and the DRIVE at about 10 o'clock. The 'advanced' tone switch is flipped to the downward position w/ the main TONE knob at 12 o'clock, the 100Hz knob is at 3 o'clock and the 500Hz knob is at noon.

I've combined this with the Moog MF Drive - delicious. Really clears up the MF Drive. I've been able to get some really interestingly thick and clear higher gain tones from this combo. It's taken my Earthquaker Devices Cloven Hoof, and kicked it into another phase of fuzzstortion, especially on single notes on the high strings. It's also served as a neat, cutting boost to a combo of the EQD The Depths vibe and EQD Levitation reverb.

I really like the extra control of being able to control the bass and mid frequency via the 100Hz and 500Hz knobs. Extremely happy with this. Not really planning on actively exploring any more overdrive pedals at this point. It was exactly what I was looking for and more.

Way huge green rhino mk iv

Does everything a normal ts type pedal does and a little more. Sounds great as a solo boost

Way Huge Green Rhino MKIV more than a TS knockoff

By Chris Vasquez from Boston/Houston on May 25, 2016 Music Background: Music Student, Gigging Musician, Music Instructor

So I bought this pedal which I found intriguing because it has the toggle switch, what I found when I received it and got to play through various fender amps is that its a killer pedal. It doesn't have the whimpy gain that the original TS has on it, it has balls. Although it isn't a in your face metal pedal (and I don't believe it was ever designed to be one) it is vary gainy. The added 100hz and 500hz gives you extra tone shaping, just like it says, that 100hz mini knob gives you a bassy thump and the 500hz gives you an awesome mid frequency. Added, the toggle switch means you can choose from the original circuit or the MKIV circuit. Hands down, buy this instead of another TS modeled pedal . Now only if this came in a mini casing.....

Green Rhino

This is really nice in front of slightly driven tube amp like a fender twin of course if you have the Line 6 Helix you can put it in front of anything. You could argue why even buy pedals to put in front of an amp modeler. well I do use pedals in front of the helix and it sounds even better. Especially if you use it in front of a nice amp Don't ask me why but pedals make it sound better but it just does and I know cause I have hundreds of them (pedals that is). This is just a nice smooth overdrive and like everything from Dunlop, MXR, or Catalinbead, this is a great, quite, superbly built, awesome addition to any rig. I'm digging Joe Bonamassa right now and I can say this does a pretty good job replicating his tone. cheaper than the Way Huge Overrated Overdrive and lots of controls to dial in some mild to moderate gain grit. Other comparison is to the EHX Soul food and the TC Electronics MojoMojo. The price is OK. The other 2 pedals are cheaper right now and the MKIV is the new kid on the block.

bass distortion

By Dan from Burbank on April 8, 2016

fan-freaking-tastic! Scoop the mids at 500 and bump the lows at 100 and this thing sounds great for bass. It sounds very Justin Chancelor with my Stingray and more stoner metal with my Fender. Very fun. Best distortion pedal I have ever bought for bass.

It's a keeper!

By Robert Drozak from TN on September 18, 2020

Really enjoying this pedal on its own and in combination with my other pedals. It makes me want to try more Way huge pedals.

Nice Grit

By Victor from Atlanta, Ga on February 22, 2016 Music Background: Musician, Mixing Engineer

I use this pedal for my bass and telecaster. It actually gives a really nice distorted sound to bass when you put it in classic mode and play with the knobs. And it of course gives a nice distorted guitar sound, I like to hit the tele just enough to hear the grit, cuts through the mix and gives these beautiful harmonics to the sound. Grab yourself one!
