Most Versatile Amp I Own

By Todd from North Carolina

I'll start off by saying I've played mainly Mesa Boogie amps for 20+ years but wanted to expand my arsenal so to speak. I was initially looking at a Diezel VH2 but my sales dude Dave Cody steered me towards this amp. I had seen a number of reviews and demos online but for me it's hard to get the feel and nuances of an instrument or amp without testing it out in person. Dave was able to go down and run the amp through its paces for me and give me really excellent feedback. I went with his recommendation and I was not disappointed.

I play a wide range of styles as well as a lot of recording and this amp does everything I need and then some. The clean channel sparkles, the crunch channel is very reminiscent of a Marshall, and the red channel is punishing. But the Purple channel is where this amp truly shines. It has some flavors of a Rectifier but is more focused and it cuts through the mix like a knife. The aggression modes allow for further customization so you can really dial in your sound. The foot switch allows you to access all the channels as well as aggression modes, FX's and Master Volume. Switching in between is a breeze.

The only thing that didn't blow me away was the imbedded Two Notes Torpedo. But that's just my opinion on it.

Bottom line, if you are on the fence, just get it. You will not be disappointed.

A fantastic machine

By Isaac from NY

This is one of the best amps I have ever heard. Certainly the best amp I've ever owned. Every channel is usable and fantastic. I was overly impressed with every single thing about this amp.

Does so much more than simply modern metal

By Dave from East Coast
Music Background: Composer/Producer

I own an old 1990 MESA Mark-IVa, so I've kinda run my course with MESA and wanted something (modern sounding) with its own personality & character. Revv caught my eye.

It doesn't sound like a Marshall, 5150 or a MESA, and that uniqueness is what I was looking for. Those tones are not in this amp, and I'm fine with that because I was looking for something different.

I ordered this amp without ever having played one in person, simply relying on Youtube reviews. So, with that being said, I was already aware of it's wonderful, percussive modern metal tones.

I was able to achieve great tones across the board with all the EQ knobs at 12:00, right out of the box.

What surprised me was just how versatile this amp is for other types of music. I discovered the Green channel to be quite pristine, and with my Big Sky I was even able to achieve some stunning ambient clean patches. The "wide" switch adds a lot of character to this channel.

Blue channel feels like a continuation of the Green (I LOVE how the four channels all feel like a continuation of the previous channel, a lot like my Bogner). A bit more gain, very suitable for classic rock up to the 80's hair metal. I keep the gain on most tube amps at around 2:00 to start with, and I found this to be perfect with the Blue channel.

Purple channel is quite special, likely the best sounding (and most versatile) channel of all. It has a wonderful, articulate metal rhythm tone. Some people may find the REVV amps "unforgiving", but then again so are the MESA Mark series. First thing I did was set the gain at 2:00, engage the bright and fat switches with a tiny bit of plate reverb from the Big Sky. I then just slowly strummed some open chords around the first fret. The harmonic complexity present in this amp is just breathtaking. Despite the intense gain at 2:00, every note of the chord could easily be heard. Rolling off the volume yielded beautiful "edgy" tones that still retained that harmonic complexity without losing valuable top end.

Red channel feels like a continuation of the Purple, with even more gain and saturation, likely aimed at lead playing. HOWEVER, despite this increased saturation, chords still retained their character and don't turn to mush. Turning the gain past 2:00 wasn't much to my taste because of the amount of saturation, but the amp never loses its character.

The reverb, while digital, is quite nice to be honest and surely fits the bill if one forgets to bring their effects pedal to a gig.

One other thing, plugged in and turned on with pedals in the loop, with the guitar volume off my amp is completely silent through the cab. This is without the noise gate being engaged.

I found the noise gate to be very effective. I just turned the knob to about 10:00 and I was able to still achieve great sustain without premature silencing of the notes. Just a wonderful addition.

I still haven't started messing with the IR's provided by what is essentially a Two-Notes Captor installed in the amp.

The amp itself is built like a tank, and weighs as much as one. All the knobs and switches speak high quality. Everything just looks and feels professional. The footswitch, while more lightweight than I expected, is still sturdy enough for touring.

Speaking of "professional", it's a flagship amp and is priced as such. I'm not even a gigging guitarist, and I have no regrets dropping $ for this amp. The harmonic complexity I heard on day one convinced me this was "keeper"

I proudly rate this REVV amp in the same realm as my beloved Bogner Ecstasy.

Check it out folks, and if you don't like it you can always return it.

Incredibly Versatile

By Eric F. from SEVERN, MD

This is easily the best sounding amp I've ever played. I mainly play heavy metal, and the purple channel on this amp through a great cab produces album-ready tones with very little tweaking required. It's definitely got the sound in my head when it comes to perfect tone. It's got a great midrange while still maintaining that upper mid bite common in a lot of modern metal. The built-in gate works extremely well, especially for extremely tight "djent" tones.

The red channel is also fantastic, my leads cut through extremely well when playing live. The mid content is extremely rich and sounds very smooth, with basically no high end harshness. The reverb also sounds very good even through a cab. This channel is fatter sounding than the purple with higher gain, which can be great for "looser" styles of metal.

I've even done some red hot chili peppers style guitar with the green and blue channels and they also sound incredible (hence the title of this review). This amp really does it all.

I've seen others talking about the price of this amp online, but one factor that I think makes the price worth it is the built-in loadbox. To get a quality loadbox outside of an amp would probably cost anywhere from $1-2k. If you consider the price of the amp plus the loadbox, I feel like it's actually in a price range similar to other high-end amplifiers.

Speaking of the loadbox, it works very well! You can record a direct in to your interface with just the amp by itself (no cab needed). You can also use the loadbox at the same time as the cab, which is one of the main reasons I purchased this amp. I use the loadbox as a direct out from the amp to record myself while practicing with my band. I also plan to use the direct out live to provide a record-quality tone to FOH while still playing through a cab.

TLDR - This is an incredible sounding amp with every feature any guitarist could need. Definitely the best amp purchase I've ever made.

Purple is my new favorite color

By Mike from Wisconsin
Music Background: Gear Guy

I don't ever write reviews on gear but I had to for this. The amp is frickin incredible. I've always been a huge fan of the rectifier sound. My ears are changing though. I just can't get them to sound good under my fingers anymore. I watched a couple videos on the smaller G20 and was blown away. I wanted to buy a "rig" though since I'm just one of the guys that likes 4x12s lol. I went back and forth for weeks between the 100R and the 100R and ultimatly just decided F--- IT I WANT BOTH.

I'm gonna start with the built TwoNotes because this addition just pushed this amp into another territory value wise. It sounds excellent. The Revv 412 in there sounds great. I actually ordered a matching cab for the amp after hearing the IRs.

The Reverb and noise gate are top notch on here. They really round out the "extras"

I'm not gonna get super descriptive on the tones but the clean is very good. It can break up if you want it too and the wide switch adds a nice boost. Channel two hits really chimey crunch tones with ease. Some of you might live on this channel. All three boosts are usuable and add a touch of gain.

PURPLE! This is my channel. OMG is it good. This is where Revv stole me away from Mesa. It's like a refined 5150/Recto but with a really sweet midrangey crunch. The gain is usuable for the whole sweep. Red channel is a little more bottom focused to my ear. It's no purple channel but it's still very good.

The boosts are great on here. I haven't even tried a boost pedal with it. Doesn't need it.

I have the matching cab with WGS Veteran 30s. Well built cab. They even customized it with the smaller LED nameplate to match the head. Looks really cool.

The value is incredible. Great job REVV! Shout out to Aaron T. at Sweetwater. He jumps through hoops to get me what I want. Thanks for all your help!

The best high gain tube amp I have ever played

By Adrian H. from Rowlett, TX
Music Background: Metal, Instrumental Rock, Hard Rock, Classic Rock

I have been a fan of Revv ever since I bought the G3 pedal over two years ago. I instantly became a fanboy, and have since purchased all of their pedals, the G20 with matching 1x12 cab, and now the Generator 120 MKIII.

The 120 is quite simply the best high gain amp I have ever played. The purple channel is cutting and tight, while the red channel is super thick, and has tons of sustain. I use the purple for rhythm, and the red for lead. While I did experiment with boosting each of the high gain channels with an overdrive pedal, the truth is that neither of them really need a boost. They sound incredible on their own, and between the aggression, bright, cut, and fat switches, you already have plenty of options to sculpt the tone. Also, the reverb sounds great, and the built in noise gate works extremely well.

While Revv is known for their high gain tones, the blue (clean) and green (crucnh) channels on the 120 are also excellent. It's very rare that most high gain amps also excel at clean and low gain tones, but not in the case of the 120. The blue channel is warm and fat enough to play jazz, and the green channel has a JMP/JCM 800 vibe to it. The green channel REALLY loves overdrive pedals. I can get convincing Marshall style hard rock tones using the green channel with just a tad bit of gain on the amp, and then boosting it with a Tube Screamer type of overdrive.

Last, but certainly not least, is the embedded Two Notes hardware. This is a godsend for guitarists like me who can't completely get away from tubes, but need a solution for when it comes to recording at home. The Two Notes IRs sound very convincing in a mix, and being able to record without annoying my family or my neighbors is certainly a good thing.

The MKIII Generator 120 has ruined other high gain amps for me. It just sounds so good, as it's practically impossible to dial in a bad tone on it. As for other amps, I just want to get an EVH 50 Watt Stealth to have as a solid backup at this point, because the 120 really just does it for me. Revv is the first amp/pedal company that has a lot of hype that is actually well deserved. Seriously consider giving this amp a go, and also, don't settle on the 100P or 100R. It is very well worth the extra money to buy the 120 to have both the purple and red channels.

Tougher than a Moose in a snow storm

By Terry P. from Everett, WA

I've always loved the sound of Revv amps. I bought a Line 6 Helix a couple years ago and at some point they put models of a Revv Purple and Red channel on it. I instantly was in love with the Purple model, I started using to record, took it on tour, and when I got back I decided I needed the real thing. This amp is absolutely amazing in every way and I have no use for plug ins, the helix models, or even a practice amp. The Generator does it all now that it has the Two Notes Captor in it. I run a cab live and use the captor for in ears. When I'm at home I just run the captor in to my interface and I have my tone right there. I can't say enough great stuff about this amp. It sounds crushing, if your looking for a great modern amp that can do beautiful clean, crushing overdrive and buttery leads and has all the modern tools you need for anything this is the amp for you. God bless the Canadian folks that make these amps! Word.

The G.O.A.T. of high gain amps

By Sweetwater Customer

After hearing an overwhelming amount of hype this amplifier has received, I finally decided to pull the trigger on this expensive purchase. I play 8 string guitar and my style is a lot like Animals as Leaders, so I need a lot of versatility out of a amplifier. Let me tell you right out of the box, this amp sounds absolutely incredible! I was blown away and it excelled my already high expectations. With how many options this amp has to offer, there is nothing this amp can not do. Worth every penny.
