Wampler Gearbox - Andy Wood Signature Overdrive Pedal Reviews

2-channel Overdrive/Distortion Guitar Effects Pedal

Developed with guitar phenom Andy Wood, the Gearbox dual overdrive pedal packs two of Wampler's most revered drive circuits into one feature-packed stompbox. Channel one is a tweaked version of the Tumnus — Wampler's take on the legendary transparent OD. Channel two is based on a modified Pinnacle circuit, arming you with hot-rodded British-style distortion by the truckload. The Gearbox boasts plenty of sound-shaping controls for each channel, and it permits you to change the stacking order of the circuits for added versatility. You also get a high-quality noise gate, plus separate I/O for each channel to accommodate complex routing schemes. Running a transparent overdrive into a modded British-style stack is considered by many to be the apex of electric guitar tone, and the Wampler Gearbox serves it to you on a silver platter.

Great platform for inspiration

By Sweetwater Customer on July 14, 2023

Love this pedal there are so many sound options and you can start with everything at noon it sounds great there then dial up the perfect sound for whatever you need. It sits nicely wherever you place it in the chain and plays well with other pedals. Not leaving my board anytime soon.

Andy Wood Gearbox

By Rod Socull from Detroit area on January 20, 2023

The Andy Wood Gearbox by Wampler is a game changer. Both overdrives are great on their own but together and stacked sounds great! Don't forget about the Noise Gate it works so good its worth the price of the pedal all on its own.
I really can't say enough good things about the pedal. If you take your tone serious you will love the Gearbox!!

Wampler is one of the best brands on the market and with Andy Wood Gearbox you won't be disappointed. Andy is a BEAST and if he endorses it then it's one of the best! The tones I'm getting are awesome!

Amazingly versatile pedal

By Sweetwater Customer from Phoenix, AZ on November 4, 2022

There are a ridiculous number of tones you can get out of this pedal. Channel 1 is modded Tumnus, and it's awesome. Really awesome. Channel 2 is a Plexi and it's all the Gain I could ever want or need. It, too, is awesome. I use an always on Overdrive for light break up and can Boost with Channel 1, and really blast it with full on distortion of Channel 2. My first Wampler pedal, and I'm impressed.

Extremely Versatile

By Jeremy Wolfe from South Jordan, UT on September 20, 2022

I've had this on my board for just under a year. It stacks extremely well with other od/boost pedals and sounds great on it's own too. The noise gate is superb, it just works without getting in your way. My chain is normally polytune->keeley comp->spark boost->gearbox->walrus D1->Walrus Fathom-> various tube amps. I have tons of pedals and some times swap some other ODs in there and they play really nice with the gearbox. This setup sounds fantastic and being a pedal guy, I love how quickly I can dial in different sounds and it always sounds superb. I highly recommend this. You won't be disappointed.

Other than hard to read print, this pedal is AMAZING

By Ned from Brooklyn on September 14, 2022 Music Background: Professional

The Klon channel is stellar, the Plexi channel is stellar (with a solid gate), the ability to run them solo or in series (and even switch the series), is all brilliant. I use a Blues Driver for a fat tone, and then I'm set with everything I need live for OD/Distortion. The Klon channel is an always-on setting for me, and with by Boss switcher I can run the Klon channel to boost either the Plexi or the BD. Amazing tone.

The best dirt pedal yet!

By Brett on February 28, 2022

Ok,
so I loved my Bogner Ecstacy Red, and I liked the JHS Sweet Tea V3 even better. Then I had the chance to compare the JHS side by side with this. I sold the JHS and kept this without a thought. The noise gate works incredibly well for being in front of the amp. The Pinnacle side is the best tone of its type that I've tried in a pedal yet. It just nails that "brown sound" crunch, and is super adjustable, all the pots have great range. I've never played a Klon or Klon clone before, and the Tumnus side of the pedal makes me very sad that it took me this long, what a great overdrive! Stacked, on its own, gain turned up with a clean amp, or down with a dirty amp for a boost, it seems to do everything great! Its my favorite overdrive now. I do have an 808 I use primarily for pushing my MT15 in djent territory, and the wampler plays very nicely with it, as well as the Wampler Fuzztration I have upstream from them. Mixing and matching all of them works great with no issues. Not much else to say, get this pedal!

knocked it out of the park

This pedal brought my Fender Super 60 to life. So many options to shape the tone. What genius idea to toggle the order of the 2 in one on a signal chain. You can hear the difference. Stacking a compressor inbetween is great especially at lower volume when my amps naturL compression isn't punching. Really sings! Thanks Andy Wood and Wampler. This is my first Wampler Pedal.

Great pedal.

Re tweaked Pinnacle with Tumnus on the other side. Can use separately or together or you can change the order. Recommend.

Plexitorion meets A Klone and have Child

By Jp from Texas on August 21, 2021 Music Background: Advanced Player

What can I say I had a lot of them of the years. This pedal is so gosh darn versatile you won't be disappointed. It has that Marshall distortion in the pinnacle side and the red isles tumnus on the other side. You can get killer clean with a lil OD then click on the Pinnacles for *alls to the wall Plexitortion. On top of that you get a WIDER EQ SWEEP! On the Mids, treble, and (another plus) Bass frequency.

great pedal

By NedM on July 26, 2021 Music Background: Professional Composer, performer

Having the send/return allows me to have the Tumnus channel always on, and then have the choice of either the Pinnacle channel or my Boss Blues Driver for the overdrive. All my tone needs perfectly met. This pedal is so right on the money for the sound.

Fantastic

By Shannon from Fort Worth TX on July 5, 2021

It quickly became my go to distortion pedal. A Pinnacle and Tumnus circuits with a gate in one box? Yep. Sign me up and I wasn't disappointed. I paired it with the new Quilter Superblock US & it's an extraordinary duo. Here's a video I did an hour after getting both of them. They've been my rig ever since. Well done, Wampler!

Didn't know what I was missing

By Mark Newton from Meridianville, Alabama on July 2, 2021

After reading numerous reviews and watching videos featuring this pedal, I bought it to replace 2 separate drive and distortion pedals on my board made by a different manufacturer. Wow! What a difference. The clarity and detail from the Tumnus side is unbelievable. As others have stated, this side is always on. The response to pick attack and guitar volume really allows you to go from crystal cleans to biting punch by varying your playing style. The noise gate on the pinnacle side is superb. Didn't realize how much noise was coming from my previous pedals. This is my second Wampler pedal, the first was a Latitude Deluxe Tremelo, and I couldn't be more pleased with either. Can't say it will be my last, but I really don't what more I would expect out of my board. Other band members at Church have complemented my on my tone since adding this pedal...Even the ones playing Kemper's can't believe it.

Might be Brian's best pedal to date...

By Paul from a distant star on June 25, 2021 Music Background: heavy fusion

I really liked my older style Pinnacle with the contour and other control turned at 1:00 and 10:00 was a really good Page tone on Vintage, the newer Pinnacle deluxe lost that sound for me with the different design. This version I think is better than the current two versions and what's not to like about a KLON based drive? Might be Brian's best pedal to date but there's a few I have not tried yet. Quality build and component choices. Two pedals for less than the cost of buying them separately plus the nice revoicings and that cool gate which is what the other ones needed. What a bargain at this price. Nice work Brian and Andy a superior pedal. You just can't go wrong with a Wampler pedal, never had one I did not like which is more than I can say for most other lines which have had their stinkers in my book.

A great pedal!

By Brandt from Minnesota on June 21, 2021 Music Background: Guitar player - covers and originals.

I really enjoy this pedal! I slimmed down my board for playing some 80s rock music and the versatility of this pedal gives me the sound I need. I really enjoy the ability to change the order of the overdrive and distortion, plus the built-in gate works really well. This is one of my favorite pedals.

Versalicious

By Rick Weaver from Lower Alabama on June 20, 2021 Music Background: Playing since 1974

Okay, so I really didn't need another pedal, BUT...I could probably concoct a pretty good defense I know most guitar players would be happy to agree with. I play in a variety band and I'm an old guy, which means I want a lite compact rig and I play some songs I would change the dial on my car radio if the DJ spun it up because the program manager put it on the list. The pedal...This is an extremely versatile pedal, almost a set and forget type pedal, It will do Van Halen and Bill Withers just by controlling your guitar volume, or Santana by rolling off the guitar tone. Add a multi FX for modulation and a good delay and theres nothing you wouldn't be able to cover from pop to country, rock to metal. I play this through a Blues jr. but I plugged into my PRS Texaplex with a 212 with HempDog speakers and all of the sudden I'm in heaven, early Stones to ZZ Top, this thing has a way of adapting to different amps, I tried a Mesa Mark I, a Vox AC30, I have a new pedal board and the Gearbox is the first tool on it.

Amazing pedal!

By Dave Lovallo from AZ on June 15, 2021

Great pedal, very versatile.Very easy to dial in settings. The noise gate is marvelous! Very happy purchase.

Absolutely Incredible

By Michael Thompson from Jeffersonville, IN on June 12, 2021

he noise gate and input and output configuration is what sets this apart. The noise gate is not a djenty super tight type of gate, but it does an immaculate job on eliminated excess hum without cutting off the sustain or chewiness of the pedal. Being able to change from side 1 to 2 or 2 to 1 without having to change cables is really nice and my favorite feature is the independent in's and outs on this. I have a mini pedal board right now and I love being able to just go in on 1 and out on 2 and keep it going. I also am building another bigger board and will have a pedal loop switcher. Being able to have individual access to each side to control the channels independently on a looper is a huge deal for me. Not only is it rare to find that feature in a pedal, but they almost exclusively require you to change a dip switch inside and you have to use a TRS to TS Ts adapter, and that just makes it look messy and pain in the butt. This thing knocks it out of the park with having that truly available/

This is cheaper than buying the two pedals individually AND you get incredible routing options with an amazing noise gate. Just go ahead and get it, you deserve it.

Working Well for Me

By Steve T. from Buena Vista, CO on June 11, 2021 Music Background: Ex Pro but Still Playing Live Once in Awhile

Very smart little box! Channel One, the Tumnus, is always on for me. A little boost and just a little "hair" makes for a fine tone enhancement. Channel Two gives it everything from Cinnamon Girl to OD Heaven. Smart = the Gate Knob. All OD's should have this function. Only turns on with Channel Two and doesn't require any other toe taps to quieten things down. This replaced a much bigger box on my pedal board and is a most welcome addition!

All the drive you will ever need and then some

By John Humphrey from LA on June 9, 2021 Music Background: Intermediate

This is my second Wampler pedal that I have purchased over the years and I have to say that I am seriously impressed with it. My first Wampler pedal was a Tumnus Deluxe that I stupidly ended up trading off a couple of years ago. With that said I did have some experience with that circuit and I really love the tweaks that have been made here on the Tumnus side. I have not played through a Pinnacle before and didn't really know what to fully expect outside of watching the demos of the gearbox and Pinnacle Deluxe. I am very impressed with the pinnacle side, once this side of the pedal is engaged it really screams Marshall.
My favorite aspect of this pedal is the option to place another pedal between the tumnus side and the pinnacle side. I placed my boss Blues Driver in between the two drives and the variability of sounds I can now get is astounding. All of my drive needs are covered now since I have the gearbox. I also want to thank my sales engineer Matt Kreager for another smooth and easy transaction.

Tons of tone-shaping options

By Matt from OR on June 2, 2021 Music Background: 30+ years of guitar, recording, mixing, and producing

Like all Wampler pedals, this looks and feels fantastic... high quality build, knobs and jacks are tight, switch is smooth, and the pedal looks awesome. Unlike other Wampler pedals where the LED lights are so bright that they can be seen from space, they have dialed back the intensity for this one...making them plenty bright to see clearly, but not so blinding, addressing a complaint some have had in the past. The ability to switch the order of the channels without switching cables is brilliant. Really really cool layout. BEWARE - unlike many of the other Wampler pedals which actually can get a little more headroom when running at 18v, the Gearbox shouldn't be ran over 9 volts, so keep that in mind when planning where to add it to your pedalboard setup.

While I love how Wampler pedals usually have tons of switches that create endless tone-shaping options, I like that this one was simplified a little. there are still plenty of options to shape the sound, but with a cleaner layout and more of a "plug in and it sounds great" approach.

The Channel 1 side is pure magic. From clean boost to edge-of-breakup to full on crunch, there is a good range of sound here. The single tone control makes for quick and easy adjustments to dial in the right level of brightness/darkness when switching between humbuckers and single coils, bridge and neck pickups, or between brighter and darker amps. This channel seems to stack very nicely with all of my other dirt pedals.

Channel 2 offers more EQ shaping options, and has an even wider range of drive - from boost to full on mayhem. I find this side a touch more finicky with how well it sits with different pedals and amps, but here is where the comprehensive EQ comes in very handy to dial in the right sounds. This channel really shines when running through my 2 x 12 cabinet at moderate to moderately heavy gain.

All in all, a tone of tonal flexibility that is not limited by any one genre, in a well built and well thought out package.

Great pedal.

By Guitar on June 1, 2021 Music Background: Guitarist

So many options. First, the pinnacle side has been revoiced and sounds much better to me. Second, you have the tumnus which just on its own pushes a distorted amp beautifully. And you can use both sides of the Gearbox separately but why would you when they sound great together. You can switch which side goes into the other. So many options. Including midi which I don't use. Plug it and enjoy it. It's a great pedal and it's orange too.

FRESH AIR IN THE OVERPOPULATED OVERDRIVE/DISTORTION WORLD

By ronnie anderson from WICHITA KS on May 27, 2021 Music Background: PART TIME PROFESSIONAL

THE GEARBOX IS A GAMECHANGER FOR ME. I HAVE OWNED AT LEAST 50-60 OVERDRIVE PEDALS NOT INCLUDING THE OD CHANNEL IN MANY MANY AMPS. THIS IS HANDS DOWN EVERYTHING I HAVE BEEN SEARCHING FOR. IT SCREAMS AND SINGS AT THE SAME TIME. SO VERSATILE FOR ANY GUITARIST. IT DOES EVERYTHING. I LOVE WAMPLER PRODUCTS AND OWN MANY. THIS IS BY FAR MY FAVORITE YET. WATCH THE VIDEOS AND SEE WHY THIS BOX WILL BE ON MY PEDALBOARD FOR YEARS TO COME.

Beautiful

By Ned M from Brooklyn, NY on May 20, 2021 Music Background: Producer, Songwriter, Performer

Love this pedal. I use the Tumnus side gives me transparent bit of OD grit, Pinnacle side is where I go for distortion. I actually use a Blues Driver for a meatier, more colored OD. Between the Gearbox and the Blues Driver, I have every bit of OD/Distortion I need.

Screaming machine, tone, Tone, TONE!

By Eric Oskanian from Fredericksburg, VA on May 17, 2021

The Gearbox is a Tonal monster. I have a Dual Fusion on my board and a Pantheon for my main go between drives with a Tumnus in the always on position. I cannot part with my DF as channel 1 is just pure tonal bliss for me. However, the Dual Fusion and the Gearbox are totally different pedals in circuitry and sound. I Like the Pantheon but between it and the DF, there is no contest for me.

The Gearbox driving both channels is like a supercharged Klon through a Marshall and it just squawks tone. Go check out Andy Wood's demo of (his) this pedal. Tom Quayle did a nice one too and of course Brian Wampler's is a must see. I love Wampler pedals. Brian Wampler makes some of the best pedals hands down. The Gearbox was definitely on the higher boutique end but to me, worth every penny.

Great Pedal, But...

By Leo on January 23, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist

This is a great pedal in sound and versatility but if you're like me thinking I can slim down the gain section on my pedal board, not so much! The gear box (to me) isn't a Tumnus replacement, nor is it a Plexi Drive/Pinnacle replacement! They all sound great, however the Gearbox didn't make it onto my main board, the Tumnus with my other drives just sound too good together, so the Gearbox is perfect for my scaled down "Grab -n- go" board, it has the sound and versatility for those impromptu sessions. Sweetwater's customer service can't be beat, Bob Mondock and the crew Rock!!!

wasn't cool for me...

By Lester Paul on October 10, 2021

I've like the old version of the Pinnacle, the recent ones lost some of the tones and killed it for me. I just didn't hit it off with this pedal tone structures were not what I like. The modern style Pinnacle even with these mods did not do well for me. Tumnus side wasn't my cup of tea either. I sent mine back. Lately Wampler just has not been ringing the bell for me anymore so I have branched out to other pedal lines. Like JHS, the older stuff was killer, newer stuff just seems like money making projects. Sweetwater needs to increase their higher end pedal lines as all this generic stuff has me looking elsewhere for more boutique offerings. Strymon still rules, Walrus Audio maybe, most other stuff like the TC cheap pedals just pale to the older pedals and rack stuff they used to have. Sure Boss is a foundation line but I haven't used one in ages or Electro-Harmonix stuff, fine for early on players but I can't see why any pro level would mess with them. It's not just snobbery it's just other stuff is much better and worth the money. Try some stuff, you will see, it's time to progress to a higher shelf of gear.

Hmmm....

By Sweetwater Customer on June 17, 2022

I love to stack my od's so I truly had high hopes for this one. Unfortunately, it sounded pretty bad. VERY processed sounding and not amp like at all. It sounded nothing like the videos and sound clips.
Needless to say it went back the next day.
Thank God Sweetwater has a great return policy:)
