My first online pedal was a Pigtronix FAT Drive Overdrive in 2014 - from Sweetwater. I love "dirt" pedals, especially, and have owned a lot and traded in or sold a lot...always looking for the Holy Grail. In the Pigtronix Gamma Drive, I may have found what I've been looking for and I don't say that about every new pedal I've bought.
I typed in "dirty gritty overdrive distortion pedal" and this was one of several that came up online. It's a mini, the smallest mini on my board. Surprisingly, it's got some weight to it. Everything feels solidly put together - controls, jacks and switch...even the 9V adapter plugged in firmly.
Before I bought it, I watched several demo videos...stretched out over a couple of weeks and also checked out a couple different ones. I kept coming back to the Gamma Drive.
In person, it sounds even better than I imagined it would - through a Roland JC40. I have delays, reverbs, and modulation pedals, but I was amazed at the rich harmonics I heard without the effects pedals on. (Maybe it's the mids that came through.) The effects just made it more awesome.
Volume, Gain, Treble, Bass - playing around with just the two tone controls gave me a huge range of variations and the Gain was responsive, too. A nice loose, gritty, sound, when it's played hard, smoother when it's not. Playing a Strat, with all its tone shaping, plus the Gamma Drive, the noticeable variations are endless. I've kept several of my favorite dirt pedals and this one is at the top, for sure.
