Great Little Guitar!!

By John Borchardt from Colleyville, TX on October 15, 2021 Music Background: Hobbyist (Obsession)

I have been in the market for a parlor guitar for quite some time, mostly due to the reduced size. My other acoustic is a bulky dreadnought, and I wanted something smaller, but not a 3/4 size. I really liked the look of this guitar, with the natural wood and deep browns, and gold machine heads. It's hard to appreciate the appearance of this guitar until you see in person. It really is a great-looking guitar. My concern about buying a parlor, of course, was the sound. I've played with a few parlors at my local guitar shop and I had mixed reviews. Of the three or four I played, one sounded a little flat and muffled, one sounded pretty good, but the other almost sounded like a ukulele.

Because the Takamine I bought was a demo, it was discounted $; so I took a chance on it. This guitar sounds great!! While not as loud as my dreadnought, it still produces a bright sound. One of the complaints others have about parlors is they sound and feel really tight and tuned too high, which was kind of my first impression too. I tuned it down a half-step and was a little blown away by how much better it sounded. With the less tension and the lower action, the overall playability of this guitar became apparent.

This is a really fun and great sounding little guitar and I would recommend it to anyone.

Tone it down!

By Paul Osborne from Connecticut on November 7, 2020 Music Background: Play guitar for 51 years

An extremely well-built parlor guitar. Absolutely gorgeous. And yet it is so high strung it is very difficult to play. The solution is tone it down from E to c. Brings out the nice bass sounds. Its just a much better sounding guitar and way easier to play.

Real Pet

By Johan on June 27, 2019 Music Background: Rock´n Roll bands, some blues as well.

I bought this guitar in order to have a small friendly instrument for fingerpicking while sitting in the kitchen after supper. :-) I wasn´t really bored with my dreadnought and super jumbo. Just wanted to enjoy its small body and its warm touch. No disappointment at all. Actually this is my most favourite guitar at the moment. No matter what style you play, this a real pet for every musician.

this is very nice guitar..

By Dana from northern california on January 2, 2018 Music Background: I've played for about 55 yrs, and when I was younger we would play around town. these days I just play at home and never even take my guitars outside

this guitar is surprising. the materials used on this model is not what you'd find on a guitar that costs as little as this. the finish is gorgeous and the rosewood back and sides with the maple wedge on the back is just beautiful. I've always played Martins that are much bigger, 0000 sizes are what I've played for years. I have a J-40 and an M custom that is mahogany instead of east indian rosewood. the J-40 is actually the prettiest sounding guitar that I've ever heard ,, and costs 10Xs what this guitar costs. I always have the guitar that I play on my stand in the living room, and I rotate them for a change. since I bought this parlor size it's the one I play because it's so small and comfy.

Great little,guitar

By Francis LaChappelle from Olean, NY on September 5, 2016 Music Background: Amateur player

Always wanted a parlor size guitar and this one is the boss. I put custom light strings (11's) on it and the sound just blossomed. The shape of the neck makes it very comfortable. Great setup, usually aimed up makin some adjustments but not this time.

Great Christmas Gift

By Dan Crowley from Millis MA on December 29, 2015 Music Background: Intermediate player

My wife gave me the New Yorker for Christmas this year and I have to admit that for the money this is a great guitar. I bought a similar Takamine for my grandson last year and I was really impressed. So impressed that my wife took the que. I was really surprised on how well the neck was set up. At first I thought it to be a bit low but I find it is perfect for finger style playing. I have to admit that this little guitar will give my Martin some competition as the playability is that good. The guitar is a bit heavy for its size but that's to be expected from a laminated back and sides. It doesn't detract from the sound of the instrument. This little guitar is loud for its size. I recommend this guitar to anyone that is looking for a beginners guitar or an experienced player looking for a guitar to keep at the office to get in some practice at lunch.

Takamine GY93 New Yorker

By Jamie Hoy from Waynesburg, PA on February 9, 2014 Music Background: Hobbyist, Worship Team Guitar Player

I have been wanting a New Yorker style guitar since I played one in a local guitar shop 5 years ago. I finally found it it my budget so I knew I had to buy it. It blew away every expectation I had. It is amazingly comfortable. The pictures on the internet do not do it any justice. As one would expect from Takamine, every little detail has been taken care of. The inlays, binding, and mahogany neck are beautiful. And, of course, the three piece rosewood/quilted maple back is absolutely stunning. The last guitar I got from Sweetwater was great, but the action was just a bit too low for my liking. This guitar had slightly higher action that makes for a perfect blend of playability and tone. It sounds great whether you prefer to use your fingers or a pick. Even though it is smaller, it still packs a great sound and sits well when played together with larger body style guitars. The tone is brighter and has a great high end, but it is still very balanced and beautiful. Words cannot even describe this guitar. It far exceeds any other guitar a have purchased in a similar price range. Do not hesitate if you are thinking about purchasing this guitar. You will not be disappointed.

Surprisingly great guitar!

By Andrew N. from Carmel, IN on September 21, 2020

This is a great guitar! Very focused mids and more articulate than I was expecting. Nicely balanced and a real pleasure to play. As expected, it does not offer the bass and projection that a full size acoustic does but does fit nicely in a recording mix. Only drawback is no case or bag.

Fantastic Guitar

By Cassandra from North Carolina on February 19, 2016 Music Background: Piano, Guitar

I purchased two guitars from Sweetwater just weeks apart. Takamine had been on my wish list for a long time, so I was thrilled when I received this beauty. I am female, 5'9", and find a dreadnought too uncomfortable to play. This Takamine New Yorker is the perfect size for me, and it blows my dreadnought out of the water when it comes to sound. This thing projects like a beast, so don't let the small size fool you. Although the front is a little plain, like most acoustic guitars, the back of the guitar is stunningly beautiful. The neck size is perfect, the action is perfect, easy to play, great sound, great look. The only reason I took half a point off of my rating is because the frets need work. Every fret on both ends are sharp. I was surprised by this, as this is the only guitar I have ever purchased that had burry fret ends. When this guitar arrived, it was packaged well. It was nearly in tune, which surprised me considering that most guitars are sent with the strings a little slack. (See my review on the Epiphone Limited Edition Caballero.) There were seven marks on the back that looked like nasty scratches but turned out to be some skid-like marks that buffed off. There were three scratches near the neck, also on the back of the guitar. I was not happy with the scratches or the gunk, but I love this guitar, so I decided not to return it to Sweetwater. I may have to pay a little extra to get someone to buff out the three scratches. Overall, the Takamine is a great purchase. The comfort of the neck makes it easy to play for longer periods of time and also makes it easier to reach chords that were previously difficult. I also noticed that I can slide on this guitar nearly as well as my Les Paul, which I am not able to do on any other acoustic guitar that I own. So, if you are willing to have the frets dressed to remove the burry bits, you can't go wrong with this guitar. I highly recommend it.

Changed my review

By Paul Osborne from Connecticut on January 27, 2021 Music Background: Playing for 52 years

I've had to constantly work on the frets of this guitar it's frustrating as hell things seems to change every day. I don't understand it it's frustrating me to death I feel like smashing it on the floor. I originally gave this guitar five stars I'm going to cut it down to three it is well built but if you don't know how to do fret work don't buy it!

Not great.

By Adam R. from Valley Glen, CA on December 9, 2022

I bought this guitar as a low cost instrument to have in my office. Even for a lower range guitar the fretwork is awful (sharp ends, uneven and rough) and the sound leaves a lot to be desired. The fit and finish on this guitar are sub-par at best. With this lower price range some sacrifices to quality are expected - but I would look elsewhere before considering this guitar. I wish I had returned mine during the warranty period and gotten something else.
