Gator Delux Guitar Seat

By Steven H. from FORISTELL, MO

Outstanding Gator got it right! I've tried several different seats and this is by far the best adjustment to fit to date. I started guitar rather late in life and comfort and fit to align everything when you practice and play is big. Plus it very sturdy and stable.

Gator Frameworks Review

By Orbod28

After using the Gator seat for several weeks, I can say it's mostly met my expectations. While the seated playing position is ideal when playing an instrument there is one caveat. If you lean forward such as reaching for a music stand to turn a page, you better have both feet on the floor. If even one foot is on the footpeg the chair tends tip forward. If both feet are on the footpeg you'll probably fall to the floor. The chair's front leg stance needs to come out farther to prevent tipping over.

Very Handy, great Product

I use this in practicing and composing songs. It's very comfortable, lightweight, and was easy to put together. Great product.

Great Addition to Studio

By Jason from Ely, MN

Should have bought this years ago. Well made and very sturdy. Great for long practice sessions. Not something you want to move around a whole bunch. Though comfortable, not sure I would pack it up for a gig - but maybe.

Heavy, but comfortable

By G D. from Charlottesville, VA

My low back demands support, so the adjustable backrest on this chair was a must. Weighing in at 25 lbs., it's a bit of a beast to transport. Fortunately, my application is a studio, so I don't have to move it much.

Updated version much, much better

By Tim W. from ARVADA, CO

I wrote a previous review trashing this product and that was correct. Thanks to my sales consultant Ian Angle and the Sweetwater tech support, I was able to get the chair replaced with a new one. I am happy to report that the new version is a vast improvement over the original.

Gator replaced the dodgy seat board with a substantial piece of wood. It is solid and yet still pretty comfortable. Secondly, they have improved the tolerances on all the fitted parts, so it doesn't move at all. The previous version was sloppy and shaky. Big improvement. The tolerances now are super tight, which makes getting things together a little bit tougher, but it is a fair trade-off for a totally solid piece of gear.

It is a little picky I realize, but the only reason for 41/2 vs. 5 stars is that now it is a little bit of work to adjust, but I understand why. Otherwise, this a nice piece of gear and a welcome addition to my studio. Kudos to Gator for getting this fixed and much thanks to Ian and the Sweetwater team for the quick response and customer support, just exceptional. Thanks!

Too Forward

By Rocket from Oregon

I'm sure finding a comfortable playing position is different for each player but felt like I was going to fall forward out of this seat. If you want to sit back while you play, the chair design will not allow that. One review suggested the problem would be resolved by setting the seat and foot rest to their highest positions. That did not work for me. As always, Sweetwater was great about accepting the return. I will try a different chair from their selection.

Junk

By Tim W. from ARVADA, CO

Complete crap. Didn't even last one year and the seat is already shot and spewing stuffing all over my studio. The seat platform is a piece of masonite or some cardboard composite material. Seriously?? Whoever came up with this design should do something else for a living. I'm not a big guy, 5'9" 160 lbs.

I'll be contacting my sales rep to see if there is anything that can be done. Complete waste of $225.

I'll never go back...

By Jason G. from Owings, MD
Music Background: Lead singer of JPARIS/Solo artist

If this thing ever breaks or wears out, I'm buying another one right away. I do a lot of solo acoustic gigs and its SO much more comfortable and useful than any of the other musician type stools. Very cool to have the guitar stand built in, I just wish the guitar hanger would fold up or down to make transport a little easier.....maybe in a future version. Rachel was awesome as usual...Sweetwater is always the best. I would highly recommend this who does solo work for a living....or just plays out consistently.

Gator Frameworks Deluxe Guitar Seat

By Harlan M. from Alaska
Music Background: Guitar, Banjo, multiple genres of old, modern and futuristic music and sound design.

Overall I love my new Deluxe Guitar Seat.
The following is a list of what my pro's and con's are
regarding its comfort and portability.
Pro's:
1.) Adjustable back rest, seat height and footrest
are a real plus.
2.) Heavy duty, solid frame also a plus
3.) Guitar hook on back very nice!
4.) Some folding features
Con's:
1.) Rather heavy
2.) Doesn't fold up as much as I would like
It to, which lends to the potential for seat cushion damage.
3.) More holders for instruments and accessories would be nice.
Otherwise this chair is very useful and nice to have!
Thank you

Great Concept, Needs Improvement

By steve p. from North Berwick, ME
Music Background: Retired professional, Guitarist, writer, producer.

I bought this for use in my home studio and have been using it for several months. Overall, I love it but this product would be greatly improved by some updated design.

PROS: Comfortable padding. The adjustable footrest is great for guitar players like me. The guitar stand on the back is pure genius. love it.

CONS: Only one backrest is provided. This means you can support your lumbar or your upper back, but never both. Not good for long hours in the studio. I actually went so far as to order a second backrest from the factory which, after some minor modification, solved the problem but I should not have had to do this. A second backrest should be standard.

CONS: No wheels. This chair is solid and it grips the floor, which is good. What is not good is what an absolute pain it is to simply move it, especially on a carpeted floor. I added casters to mine and it has been a game changer for me. Again, wheels should have been included from the factory or at least offered as an option.

CONS: By far, the biggest design flaw of this seat, and it is a serious one, is the narrow stance of the supporting legs. Specifically, the front legs sit BEHIND a seated person's natural center of gravity. What this means is if you lean too far forward, the whole chair wants to tip forward. Every time. Its not likely to send you tumbling, but it is an unnerving experience for the user, especially when you have a 1956 Gibson hanging behind you on the chair. How did they miss this? The chair would be far more stable if the front legs were moved forward a few inches. Unfortunately, any adjustment of the leg spread is not possible because of the welded frame. This is my biggest complaint.

SUMMARY: Overall, I love this chair and I practically live in it. But certain elements of the design are badly in need of improvement. If GatorWorks steps up to the challenge and makes these changes they will have one of the best studio chairs money can buy. Until then, be aware of these shortcomings if you are considering spending your money on one.

Solid chair

By Mark

I read through a boatload of the reviews before buying and I don't understand how anyone could have rated this chair low. Perhaps Gator's quality control was lacking at one time?
The chair is very solid and simple to put together. The padding is thick and very firm. I can sit on this for hours comfortably. My only regret is not getting it sooner

Not what I expected, broke in few months.

By Collin M. from Poinciana, FL
Music Background: Novice Guitar/Banjo player.

In my case the seat welds broken off within two months. I was going to send the back, and Sweetwater was going to take care of me, but could not be a box to fit it, so just threw it away. Went back to my old Fender stool. I in good faith could not recommend this product.

Be prepared to do some filing....

By Jerry S. from Meridian, ID
Music Background: Entertainer

My chair came in the mail yesterday and I spent an hour filing burrs on the vertical tubing AND on the inside of the tubing that's on the seat because the seat wouldn't "slide-down" on the upright. After ~ hour I finally got the seat to go on the tubing. I considered sending it back- but I figured the shipping would cost me ~ $ and it would be a pain to box-up and there would be a delay in getting a replacement. The chair, framework and guitar "hoop" appear to be well made however- but the folks in quality assurance certainly dropped the ball on this one. I sent a note to the Company who makes the chair and they were apologetic and offered to replace the chair, if I so desired. I appreciated their response and offer, but I pointed out how discouraging it was to spend $ only to find the item wasn't "stage ready".

Works well but I feel like they let quality slide

By Roger T. from Newbury, OH

So, I have a bad back/neck as well as bad legs from a major injury in my youth. I tend to practice and play sitting if I can, but finding a comfortable chair is difficult. This works great from that point of view. I would have given it five stars but it seems that quality was sacrificed (maybe to keep price down). Even so, I don't think it would take much to make it better, even at its current price. When it was shipped to me, the packaging wasn't very well thought out, and the main metal shaft was damaged enough that I had to call and get it swapped out. Sweetwater was great, and we made a switch with a brand new one and I sent the damaged one back. I bought it in 2021. I'm 55 and really careful in how I interact with things. However, because of the way I walk, my limp had my hip catch the upper part of the seat as I went past it. It was really pretty gentle as I was dealing with wires and a pedalboard immediately after the chair (in other words, I wasn't going fast or hard). The seat ripped completely off the backing and I was left without an upper pad for my back. When I took a look at the back, it turned out that under the nice cover, it is really just a pressed cardboard section, no wood involved at all. The way the seat is built, they use an insert to allow the screws to attach, but because it is cardboard, it just powdered up. Maybe it was too dry in my house, but as I keep it in the basement with my guitars) the moisture doesn't seem like an issue either way. I had to cut and drill a piece of plywood to make the seat work. I used all the same materials, just substituted wood for the cardboard pressed junk that was there. Now, the seat works well, is very solid, and will probably last me years, or until the bottom seat falls apart like the top. I was disappointed by the material, but it functions well for my posture and legs.

Gator Delux Guitar Seat

By Richard M. from Corpus Christi, Texas

It's great! The chair and back are easily adjustable. The seat is firm, the back pad helps with posture and foot stand helps with leg support when playing. It takes less room on stage and the guitar holder on the back of the chair makes it easier for me to grab and hang when starting/ending a set. Definitely a good buy and worth the money.

Balance Issue - SOLVED 2 different ways - Now I love it.

By TC S. from Westcliffe, CO
Music Background: 25 years on the road!

I saw the bad reviews about the way the chair would tip forward, but the solution is ridiculously simple. Just move the three adjustable sections UP! After you figure out the spacing you want between the foot rest, seat, and back rest, shift them all upward by the same distance along the main diagonal post. It changes the center of gravity for the entire unit. However, if you just HAVE to have your feet closer to the ground, you'll need to hang a 5-10 lb weight off the back while you're holding the weight of your guitar in your lap. Easy-peasy fix.

Sometimes You Really Should Believe The Bad Reviews

By David A. from Brooklyn, NY
Music Background: Aging, sub-mediocre amateur who loves trying to play guitar.

I wish I had listened to the bad reviews this time. It's hard to know-- sometimes it's just that you can't please everyone. And I guess from the other reviews some people are OK with it. But the seat is absurdly shaky, there really is a tendency for it to fall forward if you lean forward to adjust your computer or turn a page of music or fiddle with some control; the foot rest isn't positioned right. The seat hasn't broken off yet as predicted by some of the commenters. I imagine it's just a matter of time. OK, let me try to think of something nice to say. Yes! Maybe this will induce me to once and for all learn to play standing up.

Better Than Expected

By JV A. from Detroit
Music Background: Lifelong Singer/Songwriter, Newbie Recording Engineer

I'm a tall guy and not skinny, so I can't get into a comfortable playing position seated on a couch. I was leery about dropping $250 on a guitar seat, but everything else available seemed either flimsy or lacked good adjustability. I'm extremely impressed with this guitar seat and it's the most comfortable I've ever been playing seated.

A few notes:
--The footrest has a traction grip pad on it. Great for shoes or even socks, but not so much barefoot. I'm still happy to have such a robust footrest, so I just put a towel on it if I'm barefoot.
--There is a plastic guide sleeve inside the moving portions. The sleeve was a little deformed and was tough to install on the frame. I build things for a living so it wasn't that big of a deal but I still fought with it, and others might have more trouble. This is the reason I deducted a half star. The same sleeve exists in the backrest and that installed with no issue, so it doesn't seem like something major.
--This thing is incredibly sturdy and I have no problem standing on it like a footstool. Overall top marks for construction.
--The guitar hanger is easily removable and high enough to give plenty of clearance for a 35" scale bass.

Overall this is a great product and the performance totally justifies the price.

By Wayne S. from Winston-Salem NC
Music Background: I have been playing music for over 20 hrs. Off and on .

I purchased this seat and the problem I had with the seat after about couple of weeks or more. The screws in seat start digging into the particle board which cause the seat not to hold together break. Which the company sent me a new seat.. I think the unit is great but maybe replacing the seat with real wood. Even though I have the new seat have nt tested it. I do love the Gator Framework seat. But just like I said replacing the seat with will take care of this problem..

Better than expected!

By Sweetwater Customer

At this point I am very pleased with this chair. It has both good and bad issues reported online. Most of the bad confuses me. Yes the chair does tip forward if you're not sitting in it and you step on the foot rest. Why would you wanna stand on the foot rest?

It's very comfortable and very adjustable. I guess all I can do is wait and see if the screws pull out of the wood as suggested. I'm very happy with this purchase!

Very Sturdy Frame But Seat is cheap And Filmsy

By John B. from Oroville, WA

Bought it Im a big guy. Used it for about 5 0r 6 times and Snap the cheap compressed saw dust board seat broke. Don't understand Why the frame is so sturdy and the seat is so Cheap. Come on use real wood you would be surprized how much that would strengthen the seats. I'm Put a real wood seat on it them it should be pretty nice. But sham on Gator for cutting corners and using substandard materials in the seat. Shame Shame

Burned TWICE

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Musician of 20+ years

I cannot express enough that this is not a reflection on Sweetwater as they are the best music supply company I have ever done business with. However, this product is terrible. The first time I bought this stool it literally broke the first time I sat on it. I was on stage, at a gig, sat down to do the first song, and the seat broke off—literally the metal broke apart. Sweetwater facilitated an easy return and swap. The second stool came. A part must have bent during fabrication because the square shaped piece where the seat is supposed to slide up and down on the base was bent. I had to physically bend it the right way just to get it on. Then, two weeks and seven gigs later, the seat back came off. So now, to use this, I'd have to be ok with being stabbed in the back my four screws. Lastly, this thing is so heavy and awkward to transport. It doesn't break down into a compact form easily stored or transported to gigs. This is such an awesome idea, in theory, but the actual item is really bad. And I don't want to deal with yet another return. So no third try for me.

Wow this guitar stool is the best one I have ever purchased. It is very comfortable and really well made. It adjusts really easy on the back support and foot rest.

I found the price to be very reasonable for what you are getting.

I am very happy with my new guitar seat. I like all of the adjustments that are available too. I hung my banjo on the included hook, even though the banjo is over the recommended weight limit, just to see if the seat would tip over. It held the banjo with no problem and with no signs of tipping. The seat is very sturdy and well constructed. Due to all of the adjustability the seat is very comfortable.

Material Weaken the Design

By Paul M. from Northfield, MA
Music Background: Play for myself and with others for fun.

I bought this chair for the solid ergonomic aspects for sitting and playing for a sustained period of time. I like that it is a reasonably solid frame & seat positioning and that it is adjustable for height and leg rest. The built-in guitar stand is a nice feature. It's a bit heavy and cumbersome to move around so it wouldn't be ideal for use playing out, especially for a shorter gig.I got it to have in my house and I'm thinking mostly of using it in specific areas. The biggest weakness was in the design for the surfaces holding the seat and back cushions. Gator Works had attached the cushions to cheap particle board and the screws pulled right out of them almost immediately. A friend replaced the particle board on the seat with a nicer more durable wood. I used some wood glue as a temporary fix with the back support cushion. It's a shame that Gator Works used a cheap particle board design.

Sweetwater would have taken it back and refunded me but I didn't want to go through the shipping hassle when all I wanted was a simple fix on the seat and back cushion problem. Gator Works wasn't very helpful and I don't know if they took my input on the design seriously. I'm still evaluating how I feel about it. As a former worker health & safety program director I value the attempt at a good ergonomic design.

Heavy Duty But Requires DIY Mods to Real Use

By KME from Nashville
Music Background: Hobbyist, 10 years

This chair is very comfortable for playing for extended periods once you adjust to your preferences. I found my back getting sore using stools or chairs where my back isn't supported properly. This chair solves that problem however, there are two required modifications necessary due to poor manufacturing standards. Despite the overall heavy construction, the seat assembly is poorly spot welded and will not hold the specified rated weight of 300 pounds. I resolved this by welding a solid bead on both sides. The other issue involves the particle board used as the base of the seat. This will fail in a short period of time. Replace the particle board with solid wood solved the issue. Note - this is a lot of work to get an expensive chair into a usable state where I can now take it on location without fear of breaking, but the work invested pays off with a very comfortable chair for my back and now its rock solid. The Manufacturer should upgrade their specs and likely have a 5-star chair available.

Like the others, I had the same issues

By Patrick from Longview, WA
Music Background: Hobbyist

The first time I sat on it after I assembled it, the welds on the seat tore. I thought I could weld it to make it stronger which I did, but a mere hours after I completed that repair, the back cushion screws pulled out. I promptly initiated a return, but it cost me forty dollars in materials to ship this cumbersome thing back. Very disappointed and will not purchase anything from Gator again.

Don’t buy

By Michael B. from Akron, Oh

Purchased this a couple months ago. Out of the box the back cushion was pulled away from the bracket due to small screws and cheap flake board. Couldn't get just the part so had to box up and send the whole thing back and these are not light weight. Received another one and left it in my music room instead of gigging with it. Just bumped it a while ago and the back cushion popped loose again! I will try to fix myself this time. Such a waste for an otherwise good piece of gear. I would not recommend buying until this is re engineered.

Poor Build Quality!!!!!

By John from NJ

Great idea but really disappointed with Gator on this one. Waited 3 months. Finally get it and first gig out 3 of the 4 welds on the seat bracket broke. Rated for approx. 300lbs. I'm 195lbs. Also as the seat filled down and I was sliding off the threaded inserts that screw into the pressboard seat pulled out. Could not get a replacement part or seat for another 3 months. I really love the design so I had to fix it myself by re welding the bracket and replacing the particle board with plywood. Now it's a really nice seat!!!!

The Good and the Not So Good

By James D. from Arizona

It is very sturdy and works well as intended. It does have a tendency to tip forward when I lean forward. Probably needs about 1 more inch in base width to fix that problem.
I find the back support can be a little uncomfortable over a longer period of time. The predetermine adjustments aren't quite right for me. If they would engineer in a small degree of swivel capability (maybe 15 degrees) on the back support that would do the trick.
It would be nice if this had a mesh pocket on one side of the seat to hold picks, capos, slides and other miscellaneous stuff. If all these little extras were incorporated into this; it would be the perfect seat. For now, it works and I am thankful to have it.

Disappointed

By Steve from Florida
Music Background: Professional

I waited for several months to receive my seat. I loved it initially, but almost immediately the seat pulled away from the frame because it's made of particle board and secured with short wood screws. I thought I might be able to get past that and repair it by replacing with real wood, until I started to notice the seat beginning to drop a bit in the front. It turned out that the welds at the frame to the seat cracked and failed.
The whole seat pulled away from the frame. I want to really like this seat but after 2 of them, I'm losing hope. I'm going to try a third but my expectations are low. However, Nick and the team at Sweetwater were great and were quick to take care of me and ship the second seat overnight.
Even if the product isn't up to your satisfaction, Sweetwater's team are stellar and they will try to make it right.

Loose Seat Sinks . . ,.

By Bryon S. from Beulaville, NC
Music Background: Singer/Songwriter/Performer/Worship Leader/ Producer/Mix Engineer

Upon Arrival of the first seat the was not even attached to the bracket. The only thing holding it on was the fabric. After getting the next seat in, and using it for about a month, the seat came apart again. The problem is that they used cheap particleboard for the seat. If they would swap this out for good plywood it would work. But as is, it sucks. Will be replacing with plywood on my own seat. Quick fix, however, is to take 8 lag bolts and put them in to secure the bracket. That has lasted me a couple of months. I love the frame. If I didn't I wouldn't have given it any starts at all. Not the most comfortable chair but it does what it's suppose to do. I am disabled and this is a great low profile chair that works (other than the bottom seat coming apart) I really expected better from Gator.

Two slight problems

By Dan from Wisconsin
Music Background: Semi-professional 40yrs

Like another review I found the screws on the seat cushion pulled out. Should use a machine bolt with washers not short wood screws. The other problem I found is when bending forward to flip the music page on is very unstable. Perhaps a wider base. Otherwise it's the only thing out there built for the long haul and I am very glad I bought it.

Very happy with this product, comfortable, sturdy, allows me to adjust everything exactly where I want them to reach my pedalboard while singing and playing.

Needs improvement

By Joe from MS

Great concept and very versatile. The screws that hold the seat to the frame needs to be better than what's being used. 2nd time I used it the screws popped out and stripped the holes out.

Great Guitar Seat

By Charles from Portland,Oregon

Well, I lost my piano bench to downsizing, so I needed a comfortable seat to practice my guitar. This one fits the bill, and it was easy to assemble. If you're looking for a comfortable practice chair, this one fits the bill!

Good value

By Sweetwater Customer

This chair is sturdy and comfortable with plenty of useful adjustments that are easy to make and is well suited for guitarists. One criticism on the design that can hopefully be addressed in future models is that the chair will tip if I lean or reach forward. In addition a quality issue with the one I received is there is a slight twist in the fame and as a result all four rubber feet will not bear on the floor at the same time and consequently it rocks. I can slide a shim under one of the for rubber feet to eliminate this but that is a real pain and should not be necessary. For these reasons I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5. Overall the chair is a good value and I am glad I bought it.

Finally a chair thats built to last! This Chair is comfortable, and built like a tank. Love the adjustable seat, backrest and footrest, makes the seat completely customizable for the player personal preference and situation!
