Boss/Roland Array of Effects

By Robert B. from ALBUQUERQUE, NM

This multi effects processor is a really smart way to get a Boss/Roland array of effects. The pedal is a total utility and could definitely be used for practicing with a band as well as home studio and modeling use!

Great unit at a reasonable price…

By Sweetwater Customer

With all the tweaking necessary to get floor modelers up to live-show speed, its nice to plug into this little unit and with just a few simple adjustments, have multiple, show-ready tones.

Works as both a main rig, or a terrific back up in a compact, reasonably priced unit.

Talk about bang for the buck!

By Tyler F.

I'm an intermediate guitarist, and have only had one fuzz pedal for the last year. That pedal ran me about $ and I played it just about everyday, I didn't think it was too bad, but I had no reference point. I got this GT-1 because of the sheer range of capabilities it had, and didn't know whether to expect high quality sounds at such a low price point, but wow! I was in shock when I first turned this thing on. The first patch itself already was a much better sound than anything I could get out of my one pedal, and there were over 100 more and customization for each one. It's unbelievable that you can buy a piece of guitar technology like this for only $. I highly recommend to any guitar player who doesn't wish to spend thousands on a pedal board. Amazing technology.

Bang for buck, excellent tones, very portable, medium learning curve yeilds excellent results

By Warren from upstate NY
Music Background: gigging hobbyist

Been gigging the Boss GT-1 for at least eight years now in restaurants, bars, country clubs, casino, old small theaters, indoors/outdoors, averaging 50 to 60 gigs per year without a hiccup.
I especially like using the Boss Tone Studio on my laptop for editing patches. The condition of the case and footswitches/expression pedal are "as new" after all those years. I transport it inside my medium suitcase-sized metal equipment case in a bubble-lined shipping envelope along with connecting cables, a couple of other pedals (Hum-Debugger, StroboStomp mini, Joyo MV-1 wireless). I power it and the StroboStomp mini using a birDCord 9v converter connecting to a small lithium ion rechargeable battery pack that provides a conservative twelve-plus (about four gigs), hours on a single charge. I think the signal is just a bit cleaner when pedals are powered in this fashion. I seem to hear fewer "artifacts" coming through the amp speaker.
If I had to replace it, I'd research the new Boss GX-10 and try to determine if twice the cost provides something near twice the functionality/features. Boss pedals have always delivered for me in the past.

Solid choice in multi-effects

By Chris from Tennessee
Music Background: Pro musician

I use this for pedal steel guitar, and I would highly recommend it to anyone! I a/b tested this unit against a GT-1000 Core and I decided to go with the GT-1. I prefer the reverbs and amps in the GT-1 over those in the GT-1000 Core. Also, the GT-1 has 3 limiter models that the GT-1000 doesn't have (these limiters come in really handy for smooth classic pedal steel tones).
I also like the simplicity of the unit.

If I could change this unit I would:
1. Add a global eq option for tuning the overall unit to a particular room without having to adjust each patch.
2. Add an extra midrange parametric band as well as a low and high cut to the Master eq settings at the patch level.
3. Give it adjustable input gain like the GT-1000 has. (My pedal steel will clip the unit if I strum hard because it has an unusually high output.)

Sounds great, and Easy to use!

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: 30+years

Just out of the box, this is a great sounding unit. There are some very usable tones to choose from with the preloaded patches, and you have plenty of room to tweak those tones and then save them as your own tone patches. This may be a beginner unit but it offers a lot for someone with needs versatility and portability both. This unit fits in a gig bag, also has an easily accessed (accurate) tuner and can run on AA's if need be.

I don't think you can beat it for the price.

By Sweetwater Customer from Tennessee
Music Background: professional musician

Great sounding effects. I just use this pedal and go straight into the mixing board for most applications and it gives me excellent tone. You can get some really bad sounds out of this pedal if you don't know how to tweak it, but if you know what you are doing this little pedal will do most of what a guitarist needs. The Delays and Reverbs are great, but if you are looking for a Strymon Big Sky you will be dissapointed. On the delay and reverb side of things it has good options, but not everything you could ever want.

Boss Does it Again

By Just D. from NJ
Music Background: Gigging musician

Boss never disappoints. I've owned a number of multi effects pedals in this price range but this one beats them hands down. Perfect for casual to gigging musicians. Compact and lightweight loaded with features. It only took a few minutes to find my clean patches and make a few tweaks and save them. Looper, volume pedal, and tuner round out the unit nicely. I play mostly clean and the unit offers some nice presets. I can't speak yet for the overdrive patches but expect I'll be experimenting with a few when recording. Overall great value.

A Super Fun Battery Operated MultiFX Pedal

By k.dubya

For the price,BOSS gives you a lot to work with. It's not meant to replace all your amps and all your pedals but it does a fair job of doing just that in the right situation. The Boss is stellar when used as a bedroom/practice unit, thus the value in pricing, but there's way more mojo under the hood via Boss Tone Studio(BTS). Our guitar rig includes 2 Katana's heads ran in stereo mode. We use the GT-1 as a portable "duplicate" rig, either into a power amp(2) or FX loop insert. Very close reproduction of classic amp tones. The BOSS effects sound like their pedal actually do-- we've come to really dig the Terra Echo. There are limitations,i/o wise,preamps... if you're attempting to turn your GT-1 into an ME-90,forget about it. We enjoy using the headphone out to a mixer, compared to 1/4" L/R outputs. If you want your money's worth and then some, just consider this unit. Just for drill,we set it up likeschutt Van Halen Eruption tubeyou video. Wow. Try that with another brand bargain pedal. We rely on the GT-1's battery option when we use with battery-operated mobile rig with TC vocal pedal,Behringer battery mixer through Mackie ThumpGo's. Our GT-1 has been everywhere, swamp to desert--honey-tonk to outdoor festivals. Easy n cheap to replace,if needed. Also, buy from Sweetwater because they back their warranties-it matters.

A great Choice!

By Geoff B. from Dallas, TX
Music Background: Terrible guitar player.

I picked one of this up from Sweetwater recently and I could not be happier with it, and if I would have to say one thing about it, it BANG FOR YOUR BUCK! Its hard to believe you can get sound and effect quality this good for such a low cost, in such a streamlined and portable package. It is perfect for a player that is learning the effects, wants to sound really good, but does not want to break the bank to do it.

Another amazing feature is the BOSS Tone Studio and Boss Tone Exchange, it is incredibly easy to connect to the computer, and have just tons of great patches at your fingertips, at no cost!!!

Very glad I went with this product.

Best battery powered multi-effects pedal, so far.....

By Phillip M. from Fort Myers, FL

I bought this for busking and around the house. For busking I needed a decent battery operated pedal that is fairly easy to use. I'm very please with this unit. It's pretty easy to use and the effects sound great straight through my Boss Street amp.

Lots of effects for the price

By Johnny R.
Music Background: Banging on stringed things

I've had Boss effects pedals going back to the late 1970s, so I've always liked their products. This unit is small and fits on my desk nicely for recording and dialing up tones. Great Boss effects, looper, tuner, expression pedal, ability to create and save sounds- great features for the price.

Loved it till it broke.

By Thomas K. from Taunton, MA

I used the GT-1 to dial in tones that closely matched the tones of the recording of the cover songs we are doing. I link the GT-1 to my laptop via usb for an easier experience in getting the tones close to perfect. The process took some time to learn but now I can achieve different tunings without ever retuning the guitar. I simply select that patch set for that song and the GT-1 does the rest.

Setting up for practice one day and I dropped the GT-1 on the floor. The attached picture shows the result of the broken plastic piece from inside the GT-1 that moves the pot while you use the foot peddle. I used Krazy Glue and it worked until I needed to use the peddle again. It broke again almost instantly.

I contacted Roland Corporation directly on April 03, 2023 for a replacement part. I was informed by Roland on that same day that they no longer supply internal part to end users. See attached image. "All parts may be procured through service repair by a Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center or from Roland BOSS Factory Service." Removing exactly 9 screws and replacing 1 plastic part somehow requires a Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center. I do not understand that Corporate decision and never will.

I contacted a Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center in my area on April 03, 2023 for the part. They responded on April 05, 2023 that they were trying to get the part from Roland for me. April 18, 2023 they responded and said Roland was not responding to their request either. On May 12, 2023 I got another email from the Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center that they still had not had a response from Roland.

On May 12, 2023 I contacted Roland again. I am still waiting, as is the Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center 63 days later, for an answer/part from Roland.

This lack of respect for end users and the Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center in my area is never acceptable. Forcing folks that are quite capable of repairing their Roland products to seek out a Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center is ridiculous. Then add to that the fact that Roland does not work well with those Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Centers either and you have a customer service nightmare for the Roland Corporation.

63 days later and I still have a useless paperweight that the Roland Corporation, who already has the money I paid in purchasing the GT-1 has no desire to assist their customer in repairing either directly or through a Roland BOSS Authorized Certified Service Center.

I love the product when it worked. I do not blame Roland for my dropping the GT-1. These things happen. What is never acceptable is 63 days without a replacement part to fix the GT-1. If you are looking for products that are supported by the company that sells them and expect that company to respect their end users, I suggest you take caution in making any purchase from the Roland Corporation. They have zero desire, as evidenced by the 23 days with ZERO response to my last email to Roland, to get me the part that I need to fix the GT-1.

Great little unit

By Tim H. from Alum Creek, WV
Music Background: Blues and classic rock

Bought it for a bugera infinity 5w I keep at a friend's house for jams - wanted something inexpensive to breath life into the amp. It's a fantastic match for the Bugera. Great sounds, solid, and compact. Great tones out of the box. Like the output parameters that match what you put it into (combo, small amp, stack, etc.).
Seriously considering another Infinity for stereo.

Worth The Money

By Jimmy from Los Angeles
Music Background: Pro Musician

I bought this unit for rehearsals, I play with different entertainers and lugging either my medium or concert pedal board to rehearsals is a hassle. What I was not expecting was the unit is as powerful as my other two boards so I decided to try it on a few shows.Because it is a boss product I was Familiar with the sounds and settings.I Programmed the patches I needed and loaded it in my guitar bag and this little unit did the job it was built to do.Rhythms, solos, and picking all sound good and the patch changes were easy to get to during the show.

By oobusdoobus from USA

not bad, i can definitely use this. gotta figure the learning curve, the controls seem a bit cludgey. not a bad sound overall. definitely the best compressor i've ever used, but i'm not big on compressors. good value for the money though. the pedal is going to be a problem for me just because my foot is about 2 1/2 times as long as that pedal. no problem though. i'll just run my Morleys, they are built like a friggin panzer

It's what I thought it was but....

By Aaron from Montana
Music Background: Intermediate level guitarist

First off let me say that this is everything I thought it would be. It has great presets that allow you to hit your tongue goals right off the bat. It has an easy-ish editing system for when you want to tweak and save. However the problem I ran into is for some reason my unit would factory reset every couple days so all the changes all the moving of patches that I did to make it mine would be undone. I'm sure this is not the case with all the units but it is something to look for.

Overall I give it a 4 out of 5 Stars it is not the easiest available option but hard to be at this price range. The only other con that I found with it was not having an AC adapter. I used four rechargeable batteries and can verify you do get your 7 hours of use out of the batteries was they claimed.

Boss gt1

By Julian

Boss is one of the leading effects brands out there, the gt1 is very simple to use easy to navigate through the different patches, some of the sounds
On this multi unit are awesome. Add a looper wow that's even better. I own a few different setups of pedalboards with many different makes and effects on them. It's sometimes hard to dial in the tone , plus many patch cables create noise , through the effects processing. This is a great unit there are a few others out there with more capacity and capabilities but, they are much more complicated to operate. Worth every penny just to have and play around with. May even use live one day once I get it setup to my genre

My Live Solution

By Ben from Indiana
Music Background: Pretending to play guitar for a long time

I play guitar / lapsteel in a country band and this is my go to for playing dive bars. I plug right into the mixer or run into my JC-40. Does this sound like a $3,000 tube amp? No. Am I willing to take a $3000 amp to a bar? Also no. Can anyone tell this isn't a $3000 amp in the bar? Nope. If anything all the extra effects gets me more compliments. The best part is that if anyone spills their beer on my pedal board (again) it's not that much to buy a new one. The ease of mind is in itself worth it. I had a Line 6 Helix, sounded great, gave me anxiety taking it anywhere.
Buy this product to gig in wild places. Replace it when it gets too wild.

Pedal FX/FV function

By Chhatra

I set exp 1 to foot vol but pedal fx turns on when I pressed at the top all the way down. And then again going backwards and pressing at the top all the way down turns off the pedal fx and turns on foot vol. This started happening after I updated GT-1 to version 1.09. Please help me with the solution. I don't want the pedal fx to turn on when pressed all the way down at the top end.

Difficult To Use

By Sweetwater Customer

This is the most difficult to use effects box I have ever had the displeasure of owning. There is nothing intuitive about the controls. The sounds are not great. It is not useable in a live setting. You have to step through individual settings to get to the one you want. No. Just no. To add insult to injury it does not come with a power supply.

Amazing for the price

By Rod from Florida
Music Background: Long time player

Got the floor model to try out. Most presets are overly processed. But with some tweaking I was able to obtain so many great amp models. For the price I am more than satisfied. I wanted a small, compact , lightweight unit to play with headphones. The massive arena sounds I am getting are beyond fun. So, I also ordered a Roland Go mixer ProX. Connected my iPhone drum machine app and recorded many riffs ….posted results on a few guitar forums. Everyone posts….my gosh, what stack are you using? Love the Boss exclusive Power Driver amp model. Throw in a little Tara Delay, light chorus and we are in DefLeppard Hyseria land!

Don't wast your time with batteries, last me about an hour. Tried numerous chargers..all buzzed, ordered the Boss one…dead silent. Many YouTube videos if you are struggling with the useless manual. For the price, how on earth can you beat it. People get frustrated because they try using modelers thru amps. You really have to go direct to the house PA or headphones to get the direct sound. I got a Mackie headphone amp. Can hook up 4 headphones to it for friends to listen to you. Great little product.

Best small pedal on the market

By Elman A. from THIBODAUX, LA

I originally had purchased the Boss GT-100 pedal and loved their set up of saving patches, being able to use the ASSIGNS to add tones to the presets and just create clean, a first drive and a second overdrive lead tone in one patch. Alter the Reverb or Amp Sims. It didn't matter, it did it all. So when I started looking for something small just to carry around, I found the GT-1 had all the same tonal options in a small portable pedal. It has the same sound engine as the GT-100 so I could create the same presets I had in my bigger board.
After buying the Boss BCB 90X Pedalboard/Case and installing the GT-1 with my Boss FS-7 footswitch, I added a Boss RC-5 Loop Station and I realized this was going to be my main board.
This pedal does it all!

best guitar effects processor I've ever used

By Nathan C. from Santa Maria, CA
Music Background: 58 years play 40 years in the studio.

I was shocked when I plugged this GT 1 in and started playing. I stopped using all my amp plugins in the studio and only use the GT 1 on the recording I can adjust the GT 1 to get the sound I want and I put in down in the studio just like having a wall of any kind of amp I can think of, I'm blowing away. I've been playing professionally for over 50 years and this unit does what I need.
I've owned the Boss GT 8, GT 10, GT 100 and for, my experience, this unit The GT 1 blows them all away

Small, light and powerful. I have a Katana mk2 100 as well. I love how you can use Boss Tone Studio and drag and drop to them and boom whatever sound you want, you got in seconds. The presets alone on this thing are sweet though. I can't wait to get its Bass brother to match it.

TOY

By Jb from Ohio
Music Background: Gigging musician

Cool little pedal BUT, wasn't impressed with distortions, at actual band volume, cause the noise gate is junk ? When using high gain, had to crank up noise gain to point where, yeah noise was gone, so was half my signal? Needless to say, got rid of it very near day, will say its easy to program and save patches that was cool, overall felt like a TOY, I have a digitech rp7 valve, line 6 pod Xt live, rocktron chameleon( black face / green lizard,) and all of them put this to shame, but that's just my opinion, for what its worth ? If you like it/ love it, I'm happy for you, to each his own :)

Great low-budget way to have a bunch of Boss pedals at your disposal!!

By Jonathen from Bordentown, NJ
Music Background: Guitarist, 36 years

I got this for my birthday, and I really like it! I've always been a "clean and crunch" kind of guy, so I usually just use the effects that are built into my amp, but having this adds so more to my "tonal abilities", if you will. The Boss GT-1 is my new toy that I can't stop playing with. I like how you can take a USB cable and plug it into a PC or laptop. It makes customizing the patches so much easier than fiddling with the knobs, plus there are more options when you go the USB route. As with all effects processors, there are good tones and bad tones and everything in-between, but there enough tools to get you what you need, as long as you spend the time working them out. I spent a lot of time and configured a really good Master of Puppets-ish tone that I love! I'm working on a guitar tone that sounds like Jimmy Page's Les Paul in "The Song Remains the Same" movie. I love that I can switch from one patch to another, depending on my mood. I know for a lot of guitarists, having the ability to have all these effects in one box is old news, but it's a new thing for me. You can also back-up your custom patches to the PC. I would give it 5 stars, but there's one thing this box doesn't do that loses points with me: you can't assign a specific patch number to any of the footswitches. For example, you can't assign patch 45 to the left switch, patch 32 to the middle, and patch 3 to the right. Instead, the pedals on the unit increment up one patch or down one patch, so if you want to go from patch 34 to patch 45 in an instant, you better be able to tap the up pedal 11 times really quickly to get to 45. Even if you buy one of the compatible Boss foot switches (like I did with the FS-6) and plug it into the GT-1, the FS-6 switches only increment up one patch with the left switch and down one with the right (or vise-versa, I can't remember which). So, in a performance setting, if you plan to switch back and forth between different patches on the fly, this isn't the best box for that. It could be done if you, for example, assign the patches in the order you'll need them (so, assign your fav distortion patch tone to patch 1, then clean tone to patch 2, then the same distortion to patch 3, then clean with a chorus to patch 4, then back to the distortion on patch 5, etc), then just keep hitting the up switch every time you need to change, but this requires meticulous planning and if your setlist changes, you're screwed. If this unit had that ability to assign specific patches to the foot switches, it would be perfect! But for me, using this when I practice alone or record, or when I practice with the band (as long as I only use a couple of tones), it's fine.

Awesome

By Vinnie C.

I am a midland to fair acoustic guitar player. Fortunately, my 19 year old son is very good on electric guitar and has been playing for about 2 or 3 years. This was the one gift he really wanted for Christmas so we got it for him. He spent 6 or 8 hours the other day jamming at a friend's house. When I asked him how this pedal was working out, he exclaimed, "It's sick!!" He went on to tell me all the things it can do and how flipping amazing it was. He is loving it, his friends are jealous and we are happy for him.

Boss made a mistake...

By Richard T. from Pen Argyl, PA
Music Background: Drums, guitar, bass, keys, vocals

Ok, so I have this GT1, I also have the GT1-B as well as a Katana. I keep going back to the GT1 even though the Katana is an amazing amp with the same tones and even more capabilities in some respects. However, this pedal fits in the flap down compartment of my guitar case and I end up leaving my Katana at home when I go to practice and just plug into the PA. Where I think Boss screwed up is that I keep looking at the GT100 or 1000, but find it hard to justify that when this has the same tones, and regardless of what monster you buy, most of us will usually stick to 4-5 core tones with a few variations. Because of it's size, power and practicality, I will likely never buy one of the others.

Perfect companion for me and my favorite electric

By Jim from WYLIE, TX

As I mentioned in another review, when I find myself solo on a rainy night, I can pull out the GT-1, plug in my headphones and favorite electric, open the blinds to catch the lightning, and play (and sound) the way I had always dreamed that I would be able to someday. This GT-1 is perfect for a quick, easy and repeatable session. I have gotten so much more out of it than I was expecting. I find myself using it instead of all the gear that I used to have to haul out instead. It fits in the zipper compartment of a gig bag, is no battery eater but can also be used with the Boss ac adapter, and provides everything I need when I want to just plug and play. It can give sounds that are so varied that I can play in any style and get a great and rewarding session, time after time, and all with just a guitar, cable and set of headphones. Boss gear is reliable and well engineered. And don't let the price fool you. This GT-1 is no exception. It is powerful and gives way more than you might expect for its price. I especially love the built-in tuner and looper, which I use way more than I initially thought I would. And when you see one of these offered on Sweetwater as a demo with the corresponding discount, I would say jump on it. If in doubt, call the fabulous Sweetwater SE Mitch Dazey and get his thoughts. If it is right for you, he'll let you know. But even better, if there is something that more fits your needs, he'll guide you there for a look as well. Cheers all. Music is the source. ;)

A great little multiple effects unit very versatile once you get used to navigating around it and using it. Plus being able to run on four double A batteries and it having a small footprint a win win for me !

Good bang for your buck

By Dave M. from Camden ME

The GT-1 is what it claims to be - a versatile, good bang-for-you-buck processor that can take the place of a half-dozen pedals. The build is solid, and the sounds are good, although it leans towards lots of fuzz presets. My disappointment is that you cannot control the volume of the recorded loop with the volume pedal function - it would seem that this would be a simple design tweak, and make the unit more usable. all in all, pretty good.

Blown Away!

By Sweetwater Customer from Florida

I'm a tone-hound on a limited budget (aren't we all?). Been playing in classic rock (it wasn't "classic" when I started) and wedding bands since 1975. I've played through Ampegs, Carvins, Marshalls, Hughes&Kettners, Wampler Dual Fusion and the old BOSS ME-30 multi unit. They all have their good points but the GT-1 amp models are KILLER. I didn't care for the stock presets, but I easily created about 24 custom patches to match whatever tunes are on the setlist. I never received compliments on my tone before starting to use the GT-1. Like some other reviewers, I miss the ability to "preset" a patch change in another bank, but it's so easy to copy/move patches around to put them close together for varying set lists, so it's no big deal. Saving patches in the software is a real load off my mind in case I ever need to restore them. Never been happier with my sounds.

GT-1

By Michael G. from Where ever I want to be
Music Background: Long time recreational dude!

Works like advertised. More powerful than I thought it would be. For the price point I can't complain. Plenty of tones and effects to help create some original songs. All that in a compact unit. I sold my home and have been traveling for the last year so space is at a premium. This thing fits right in my gig bag front pouch so perfect on that front. Need to get the adapter because doesn't last as long on batteries as I would like but appreciate the option and portability fore sure.

O.K. until the cable on / off plug doesn't work

By Joel from Co.

I was actually impressed, until I switched guitars and plugged back in to the unit. Then nothing... try it again nothing no power.
Changed cables, got 1 crackle out of it , then back to square one. Yep, got batteries, yep have the power source pack plugged in, insert cable for on /off mode nothing. Piece of junk.

Amp Model's For Your DAW....With Knobs

Small in size, big on sound, easy to transport, etc. The high-gain amp model's will blow you away when plugged into a clean tube amp. Boss effects and Tone Central editing, all win's at this price. So many tasks that a GT-1 can handle, everyone needs one. Oh yeah, they are also fun as heck to play.

A Small Pedal Loaded With The Greatest Hits Package From The Boss COSM Library

By Sweetwater Customer

A monster of a pedal at this price-point! I totally dig COSM amp modeling, and have been recording music with it since I first used a Boss stand-alone digital recorder in 2004. I also purchased a VS-20 interface a few years back that included COSM technology and I still use it in 2020 to write/record demos. I also have a Katana head for studio and live gigs that uses COSM; it is one awesome amp all on it's own,and I really love the Boss Tone Central software and the level of tweaking it allows. I always wished and dreamed that the VS-20 could be used as a stand-alone unit, due to it's size and COSM patches,so I was eager to give a GT-1 a whirl and see what up. Well,it's even better than I expected PLUS it uses Boss Tone Central! It sounds good in front of my Marshall DSL head's clean channel(amazing!),and it also sounds good used purely as an effects unit and ran through the DSL's FX loop. The GT-1 delivers all the familiar amps and effects you will need,is easy to tweak, and easily fits in a gig bag side pocket. It looks like a cool toy,a beginner's pedal, etc.,but WOW,it's loaded with a studio full of amps and FX that sound real and true-no toy story here. I am sold, time to get one for bass guitar! Totally worth the $,don't hesitate if you are considering a GT-1.

Very powerful tool, but complicated to get set up just how you want it

By James E. from CA
Music Background: Some performing experience - 40+ years of playing guitar and ukulele

The Boss GT-1 is a great pedal that replaces a number of special devices on your pedal board. It is full of surprises, mostly good. Along with all of that power comes complexity. If you gig often, and change the sounds you want on the fly, or even shortly before going on, this board may not be for you. The manual is sparse on details about what each of the settings actually does, and there are a ton of settings you can play with. I suggest you download the full manual, as well as the full Boss GT-1 Parameter Guide from Roland's website. This will help. Then spend some time setting up the Boss GT-1 how you want it.

If you always play the same tunes, with the same cycle of guitar effects for each tune, this will work fine. It seems to be made well, and the ability to have battery or plug-in power is a real plus.

For the price, it's probably worth the gamble if you think you can work it into your playing style.

Just wow!!!

By Until D. from Fond du Lac, WI
Music Background: 40+ years as a pro level live and recording audio engineer and a multi instrument musical since 1974.

I was blown away how good this pedal sounds and how easy it was to get it to sound that way. I was using a Helix Stomp and I just couldn't get what I wanted. I am thinking about buying another one to replace my Helix rack mount. I am also buying the bass version for my wife's bass rig. I am very good at programming the Helix stuff. It seems that I am always settling on the sounds or tones I am getting. The Boss GT-1 sounded good right out of the box. What I really liked is the patches I built (37 of them) worked with either my PRS or my Strat. Couldn't achieve that with the Helix stuff. I am in no way saying the Boss Gt-1 is better than the Helix processors, it just works better for me.

Amazing BOSS GT-1

By Sweetwater Customer

Just a great piece of gear. Seriously, there is alot of great tones in the little but powerful box. I recommend getting a foot controller as this will expand its functionality. Same engine as it's bigger brother the BOSS GT 100. It's my practice, and gigging tool. I'm using it with the HEADRUSH FRFR108. It's awesome and you get alot for the money, but it's not just the quantity, it comes with high quality sounds.
For details on this just read the many reviews.
Very HAPPY with the Gt-1.
Can only imagine the BOSS GT-1000.

Boss GT-1

By Ron A. from North Carolina
Music Background: Playing for 50 years. Not a pro.

I have owned several Digitech multi FX units and this is my 1st Boss. I am impressed to say the least. It has a ton of options and sounds. And 99 user presets, wow. It took me no time at all to program 4 killer settings on the 1st day. All of them sound great. I would recommend this to anyone and the amount of FX you get for this price is amazing.
The only things to improve it is to include drum tracks (like Digitech) and a faster switch to engage the wah pedal. Also, it wouldn't kill Boss to include a 9v power supply (like Digitech) instead of having to buy one.

I just got this last week and have been digging it ever since. I've been looking for a small compact unit and this thing absolutely fits the bill. It has the most useable presents of any unit I've had in the past and I can't get enough. Then on top of that I paired with my BoseS1 Pro along with my new Boss Wl20L wireless. I can now go in throw down and do it all with no AC power. I have many amps and guitars and this setup is going to be my go to rig for a while.

I own a Boss GT-10 and I just bought the GT-1 to work with my laptop.
Pros: Excellent tone quality (noticeable improvement compared to the GT-10 technology)
Portable, long life batteries, very friendly PC app to handle effects, sturdy,
affordable.
Cons: None so far.

Boss Knows What To Do

By Ashley

Sometime before writing this, I used to have a Headrush Pedalboard. The only thing about that one was that it didn't fit into my Firebird case! This unit does! Got my Plexi back plus a JC-120, all in stereo; plus all those industry-defining effects!

Just awesome.

Fantastic multi effects pedal

By Tyler M. from KCMO

The only reasons it isnt getting 5 stars is

1. Doesnt come with power adapter(does come with batteries though)
2. The included instructions dont tell you much besides the basics.

Other than that this thing is loaded with great sounding effects and amp sounds. After reading about it online I figured out everything and it's super simple. The looper is great to include with this. I like to put batteries in it and use my headphones while people are sleeping.

I highly suggest this! I've had a few different digitech multi pedals in the past, but this blows those out of the water.

Worth every dime, and then some!

By A. A. from Charlotte, NC
Music Background: Electronics Engineer, Recording/Audio Engineer, Bassist

For many years I have stood by the thinking that it doesn't require hundreds or thousands of dollars to make good sounds, and this multi-effect pedal is proof positive. Even on its own it's sound capabilities are outstanding and when you put it in the mix, no one would ever know how little you spent.

The real worthiness is found in the preamp, amp and cabinet simulations and combinations it has, and it's worth its cost just for those. Add to that the multitude of sound modifiers and effects and you end up with a most capable piece for studio and stage (and mine finds itself filling roles in both).

Granted, it has a small footprint and small controls, but that can be an advantage. They are all functional for their size, and there are enough controls and inputs to make this a rock solid choice for the veteran as well as the novice. The additional switch and controller inputs give this some serious potential to be the heart of a larger platform.

I bought a GT-1B because I am primarily a bassist, but I also purchased the GT-1 because I need something massively capable for guitar as well as keyboard and high-range bass (bridge output).

To each their own, but personally and professionally, I don't need to spend $500 or more for a multi-effect pedal when this is available for so little. Worth saving for and worth owning, in my opinion.

Best wishes!

Andrew Woodard,
Charlotte, NC

Bought GT-1B for bass, had to have GT-1 for Guitar

By Rob from Texas
Music Background: Guitar amateur for twenty-five years.

I purchased the GT-1B for my bass, because I had no bass effects and my son wanted some. It worked so well and was so easy to use, I was jealous. Here I was with 7 effects pedals strung out all over the floor, with noise and hum everywhere. So I ordered the GT-1 for my six string.

In under an hour I had my favorite songs programmed in. Switching from "Comfortably Numb" to "Sunshine of you Love" with a click of the nob. I am not even using the pre-amp, front end or effects on my amp head, I just run the GT-1 right into the final amps. (Foot pedal volume) I added FS-6 foot switch for easy changes. For example, I have it programmed for the verses, first solo and second solo sounds for "Comfortably Numb" so I can just roll through the song.

I wanted to play "Sunshine of Your Love", to which Clapton said he just overdrove his Marshalls. Low and behold, I can select a Marshall overdrive emulation on the GT-1, and it is so close my ears cannot tell the difference. (Now, if I could just play like Clapton...) Online you can find a large number of settings for various songs, some even based on the GT-1 itself.

I jacked it directly into my Scarlett 6i6 and can record every guitar part in the time it takes to play them. With a headphone jack I can practice and play without disturbing the rest of the family. It has left/right outputs so the stereo effects can be connected to my dual amps.

Put all your effects pedals in a storage box and get the GT-1. With the looper you can lay down a very long backing track to play over. Heck, the tuner is even in there. Now I can have 6 or 8 effects combined without listening to 60Hz hum. At some point in the near future, people are probably going to trade GT-1 patch files and it is going to be fantastic.

One of the best pedals on the market

By John L. from Texas

This pedal, is a powerhouse! It enables the user to custom create patches that will work for the user; not force the user to play what the pedal has stored.

The pedal is VERY user friendly & the Boss effects are 1st rate. This is the second one of these I own; the first was sold to a friend, because he borrowed it & wouldn't give it back! He offered me the same amount I paid for it new, and we were able to move the patches into the new unit, so the patches I created, are in this new one.

I own more than one electric guitar; one with humbuckers, and one with filtertrons. I have patches for both guitars, set from clean to Robin Trower.

One of the guitars is a Gretsch, and I can get realistic Rock-a-Billy patches that don't sound cheesy.

All in all; I've owned pedals that cost me twice as much & were a hassle to program, or create patches with. This one, will make you get rid of your other pedals; it can & will do it all. JL

so useful, so small

By Michael C. from San Jose, CA

Loving this Gt-1 MFX pedal from Boss. so versatile it takes a while to realize how useful it can be.
so easy to jump from one effect to a completely different effect in no time. starting to customize my own sounds now. the presets are a great jumping off point, but should be considered as teaching tools and examples.
now i'm setting up my own play lists "LiveSets" for gigging. really handy, only a couple clicks away from what i need when onstage.
when practicing, not hard to get in there and tweak this or that and see what the other guys think.
and fits in the bag i was already carrying! and it has a foot pedal!
thanks sweetwater, you always come through.

INSANE features for the price

By Sean from Pittsburgh, PA
Music Background: Weekend Thrash Metal Warrior

I've been practicing and gigging with this for a few months now, and am beyond impressed. The amp modeling, while obviously not at the level of Kempers and such, still sounds great through a power amp and cabinet. At my last show, the guitarist from another band was seriously loving my rhythm tone (5150 model) and couldn't believe how simple my rig was.

While the presets will show you generally what this box can do, the best way to find out is to dig into the menus and start tweaking. The models rang from good to excellent, and the modulation effects are top-notch. The pitch shifting seemed a bit wonky, but I haven't mucked about with it enough to develop expertise yet. The "solo" preset to add to my distorted tone was perfect without any editing though. Boss really knows how to pack a ton of features into a small, inexpensive package. If you need something for local or flyaway gigs, this has to be on your list.

Boss GT1 and Sweetwater

By Jeff from Branson
Music Background: Full time pro

First off, Sweetwater has exceptional customer service.
I have used Boss multi effects since 2001. I had a GT6 and a GT8, and now have a GT-001 and a GT100. I have never had a Boss pedal fail, ever. I use the GT001 for my studio where it sits on the desktop, and recently got a steady gig with limited floor space, where the GT1 fits perfectly. I don't need a big load of presets for this gig and don't need to use the volume pedal. This thing is exactly what I need and it sounds great, like the GT100. Boss has the best chorus in the industry, and the clean Twin sound and Marshall stack sound are first rate. I go direct into a PA and the engineer loves it.

Great Value

By Mark B. from Clarkston, MI
Music Background: 45 years of experience playing and performing guitar in many rock and bands

I needed something for rehearsal and did not want to pull out my full floor pedal effects every time. I was really surprised with the amount of different effects, ability to adjust the effects and the great sound. A cool feature about this is you can choose what your output source is, whether you are going to use a small amp, large amp rack or even mainline into a PA system. With some set up, a little time, additional Boss A/B foot switch pedals that can be plugged into this, I can see how this could be used full time. I will still use my multi effects floor pedal set up for live performance but I could see how this could be good for a live performance, for downsizing or to use in a pinch. If you don"t have a lot of effects pedals this would be a great addition to your set up without having to spend $2000 on a bunch of petals or something like a Line 6 floor pedal system.

USB Audio and Mobile Devices

By Tim E. from Alabama
Music Background: Wannabe

I like almost everything about this pedalboard except that the USB Audio feature doesn't work to Mobile devices (i.e. new model iPad, iPhone, Android). USB Audio only works to desktop Mac/Windows (weird, right?). Part of the reason i bought it was because it was battery-powered and had the USB Audio capability which together would've been great for travelling or playing out live (open-mic, busking, etc.).
I 'did' keep the pedal however in the hopes that either Boss or Apple will release a software patch to make them compatible.
One of the other things i don't like is that i can't find a 'tap tempo' and the looper isn't 'geared' ideally for a live scenario (imho!)

For the price, the GT-1 is pretty loaded. I've owned the GT-3 and GT-5. This unit has one serious plus over previous versions. The majority of the patches are usable without any tweakage. Say goodbye to cheesy presets. Boss got it right.

By Mike W. from Irmo, SC

Just received this pedal yesterday and already like it a lot. I've owned Boss effects for a very long time. It started with a chorus stomp box, a flanger, sometime in there I had a ME-5, etc, etc. It's very easy to use and edit on its own. The companion editor/librarian appears to be a piece of cake. Time will tell.

I like the sounds, size and potential with this pedal. Mike Baldonado, has been very patient with me. I'm old, slow and ask way too many questions. He stays in touch and even though I don't spend in the bazillions of dollars. Thanks Mike and Sweetwater for all you do. Oh, and you too, Boss.

Give it time.

By Andrew from Oklahoma

At first it will seem like just another disappointment. The pre-existing patches are at best, common and oversaturated. But if you take a little time with the GT-1 online and you cannot find the sound you are looking for, this is not the pedals fault. I'm new to the multi-effects world and found it only took me a few hours to dial in several amazing patches and download them. Thank you Boss for making a processor that can be used by anyone.

Floored

By Dave
Music Background: ARS Brother Cane

I have used BOSS pedals for 25 years. When I play electric I'm a stomp box guy and when I play acoustic I do looping (BOSS!) so then I'm a multi effects unit guy. I've had three different previous GT units. Last year I purchased an ME25. It sounded great but I needed the flexibility of a GT (but needed a small footprint for pairing down my pedalboard real estate) so I just purchased the GT-1.
This might end my decades long affair with BOSS pedals.
I am floored(no pun intended) by the fact that they changed the sound of their octave effect so drastically. It has always been reminiscent of their brown octave pedal on every multi effects I have used by BOSS. The octave on the GT-1 is a very sterile non-musical sound like a square wave and tracks very poorly. When I lay a bass part down as part of a loop it sounds like an 80s video game-and not in a good way. I called BOSS directly and the associate I talked to seem to surprised and somewhat dubious of my claim. There is no way I'm the only one that feels this way(actually a buddy of mine just purchased one and he had the same problem).
Everything else about this unit sounds great so I'm gonna bite the bullet and buy a separate octave pedal to complement it but it won't be from BOSS.
Sweetwater, however, still gets two thumbs up from me, and Mike Conyers is a great sales associate.

Top Tier Effects pedal

By John L. from Houston

Ordered this pedal, because a friend had purchased a Boss Katana amp, and I really liked the quality of the effects; they didn't sound "cheesy".

1st, this is a well made, quality product. Small, but super effective; dynamite comes in small packages, this one is nitro!

2nd, it is VERY user friendly. I programmed 20+ custom patches within two hours of plugging it in. Boss has a 1st rate online software package, called Tone Central, that allows you to download pre-made custom patches, and lets you tweak the ones on the unit.

I can't say enough good things about this product. I've being around the music scene for a lot of years & I can count on one hand, gear that I am amazed by. This pedal is #1 on that list.

Buy one & see for yourself.

Great replacement

By Sweetwater Customer from Texas/Sweden (Yes, the place witk IKEA)

Very much a "modeler", but a great one at that. Since all/most of my pedals were Boss, this has replaced them all. Very nice modelling of amps also.
The only real negative I can think of would be that the expression pedal is kind of small. That being said, I do have size 13 feet, so maybe not all people will experience the sam problems.

Great sounds, perfect for travelling.

By Gunboat D.

I used to carry a Strymon Flint around to solo shows. With verb and trem, I thought it was the perfect single pedal for open mic or shows with minimal setup.

But with battery power and being just a bit bigger than a textbook, this thing will replace it. The sounds are great and the software makes it a snap to put an entire sexist into the unit. I created 26 presets last night and they all are matched for volume.

It's also easy to work from the unit directly, but programming the experience pedal or ctl button is easiest on the pc.

The only drawback is that you have to remember to use your toes to tap buttons. Since its so compact, it's easy to bump the experience pedal when hitting the ctl button. But that's a small price to pay for its portability.

I also travel overseas and play shows when I'm on vacation. This will be my new gigging companion.

And my rep, Jason Kooks is amazing. He answered my questions and got me pointed in the direction of the best purchase for me.

SHORT AND SWEET

By Sweetwater Customer

I had the GT100 a while back and it was ok , this was a whim' buy as a standby and its surprised me greatly by just how good it sounds , the one drawback is needing to bank up/down to find patches which in a gig situation is very tricky and means moving all your set-list patches into groups and knowing which is which
I put this up against a top of the range L6 unit and for me it sounds far better and is more feel-friendly as well, like has been said for the price its steal, one annoyance is the silly price of the PSU from Roland when a perfectly good generic one is just a few $.

Boss GT-1

By Rob C. from Annapolis, MD

The GT-1 sound is great for heavy rock, shredding etc, but does not work for sparkling cleans with minimal effects.

No true bypass capability - even with all the effects "turned off" there is significant coloration of the sound. A Telecaster (or other single coil) played into a clean amplifier sounds shaped and compressed. An external bypass switch must be used if you want to play clean.

Digital noise (microprocessor noise) in the output, on a power supply or battery power.

The Effect Pedal is microphonic - can produce feedback if placed near an amplifier, also will pick up foot traffic.

Foot switches: Impossible to select the tuner unless both switches are depressed at EXACTLY the same time. If you don't get get it just right, patches will advance very rapidly stopping on a totally different patch. For the same reason, the looper function is useless. This is likely a timing issue that could be corrected with a subsequent release. This makes the GT-1 unsuitable for live work,

The GT-1 is well built, and nicely portable, and may be suitable for some, but not all genres. Portability is a major positive.

Lot's of Options

By Michael from Corning, NY

I was looking for a compact rig to perform gigs with that works with both my Guild acoustic and Fender Strat. Lot's of Options to set up both. I like the clean channel for the acoustic and I have a multitude of settings for the Stratocaster, whether it be distortion, overdrive, chorus, etc. The digital delay is also very versatile. The best part of the GT-1 is the ability to go direct into the PA, without the hassle of carrying an amp.

Sounds amazing and is super easy to edit on board or on the PC. Fits easily in outside pocket of my soft case. Love this thing.

Great Multi-effects Pedal from BOSS

By Ken from Dallas, Texas
Music Background: Playing keyboard and guitar for over 50 years.

I recently purchased the BOSS GT-1 from Sweetwater and have found that it performs exactly as the manufacturer intended, it does not disappoint. I picked up the Roland PSA 120s power adapter for it also. My sales engineer, Nate Burkhardt, contacted me immediately for follow up after my online order was submitted, Sweetwater customer care is the best in the industry. The patches sound great when played through my vintage Fender Twin or PA system and even my old tube amplifier stereo system. I have been able to almost duplicate the Twin Reverb's unique and revered Fender tube tone when used with the PA system. It has the same patches as the GT-100 only lacking a few pedals which I intend on rectifying with the BOSS A-B pedal. The BOSS Tone Studio works great after installation and with the USB connection to my Cubase DAW I am easily recording. I like the size of it for portability, it feels sturdy and well built. I have spent so much time playing through it at home that my wife has told me I will forget to eat. Could not be happier with it, thanks Sweetwater.

GT-1 Rocks

By Robby from Annapolis, MD
Music Background: Studio musician

After 10 years of resisting multi-effects pedals, opting instead for extensive pedal boards. I ordered this on a whim and I'm very surprised how good it actually is. It's very powerful and seems to do well at emulating a real pedals - all in a small package. Boss has some nice stock patches, but for my taste, they all need to be tweaked for individual guitars and taste, just as with separate pedals.. Boss accommodates tweaking by letting you overwrite the user positions, so I have created a few custom patches for my heard..

My only negative is there is no actual switch bypass, so I use an external dual AB. My Tele is simply not as clean and articulate through the GT-1 as it is direct regardless of patch mods, but other guitars not so much an issue.

The foot switches are difficult to actuate simultaneously if you want to use the tuner (I don't, but I tried it). Same goes for the looper switches. The volume pedal is not very smooth with it's short travel, but I'm a clutz with any pedal other than Cry Baby or VOX.

I think the GT1 is a no brainer for no more money that a single decent pedal.

The Boss Tone Studio controller software is fast and easy to use, and pretty much a must if you want to create custom patches.

Thanks Sweetwater SEs

Boss GT 1 blues

By Mark P. from Tennessee

It amazes me that you can't include an AC adapter, at least include some top shelf batteries.

Awesome

By AC from Canada

I have the Boss GT-100 and It's one more piece of gear to haul. The GT-1 fits right inside my flight case and it is one less thing to carry. While it's not as functional for a live performance as the GT-100, I can program all of my patches to be in the order I use them in. Thus, I manage it so that I can be efficient in anything live. I did some re-assigning of pedals with the GT-100, but never used an external pedal. I have a three Boss-FS6 external pedals and I just bought an FS7. I have been trying (unsuccessfully) to create a new system variable for the external pedal so that "A" is a boost for any patch I'm in and "B" adds a huge amount of sustain. However, while I found the preferences to adjust this pedal to "system" rather than "patch" I can't figure out how to assign something to "A" and "B" I've done a ton of online searches; however, there is little information out there. If anyone knows how to do this, I would love to hear from you! Otherwise, the tones are every bit as solid as the ones from my GT-100!

Best Multi FXedal board ever

By Astor T. from Miami
Music Background: Professional

I have been impressed by this little pedal in size and humongous in sound! I replaced my RP 1000 with this little baby and it is a keeper. Traveling with it is a breeze,it fits on the front compartment of my Mono Vertigo guitar gig bag. I just had my first gig out of state with the GT-1 and people were asking me what kind of amp I was running and they were amazed to find out that I was not using an amp and all of my sound was coming out of this little baby.I only use it for traveling as I will not replace my Mesa Boogie for anything in the world when I play locally but it is needless to say that if I do get tired of carrying that 60 lbs animal to every gig without a doubt I will use the GT-1. Boss really did a great job with this pedal

Boss GT-1 Multi-effect Pedal

By Jeff from PA

As a beginner in effects pedals, this pedal is great for understanding its function right off the bat.
Has enough patches and effects to keep me busy for sometime. I didn't give it the "wow" review
because I'm still working on it's full potential.
