Love it. Way better than I expected.

By Nicholas Petreley from Round Rock, TX on December 28, 2019 Music Background: Former gig musician with various bands

I have relatively small hands, and as I have aged, they don't work as well as they used to. So I figured I'd try out a short scale guitar. This feels and plays like a dream. It was perfectly playable out of the box, after tuning it up. Yeah, I still prefer my full size Gretsch overall, but I've only had this for a few hours and I'm having trouble putting it down. It's a blast to play. I don't gig anymore, so I'm not concerned about how well it would be a gig guitar, but for pure personal enjoyment, I suspect this is going to be one of my favorite guitars now.

Wow

I am in my seventies and I wanted a three quarters size guitar to play while leaning back in my LaZboy. I figured for a hundred and fifty bucks why not take a chance on this guitar. I am just blown away on how nice this guitar is.

BEST BANG for the Buck$!

I bought a lefty version of this axe, and WHY was the short scale 22.2" and its 3/4 size, plus 24 frets.
It has Hoshino medium frets exact size of old 50's Gibson jumbo frets on old Les Pauls at .106" x .039" so it's not the usual huge jumbo size like Dunlop 6100's on modern axes

Overall it's pro quality that was better than costly high end custom axes I've had costing thousands. (Hamer/Gus/Conklin/Gibson)

The stock pickups are ceramic humbuckers a bit dark but because this is short scale a standard E tuning is too loose and will sound dark and muddy.

I uptuned it to F# and hit the sweet spot.

I did mod the neck using steel wool sanding pads anyone can get in a 3 pack at Walmart for $3 bucks going rough to fine. I took it down 3mm to a Wizard III contour.

I put EMG Red Series pickups in it that cost far more than the lefty version at $179 bucks.

The body wood is Poplar more dense than Ash or Alder or Basswood. It works great! The Ibanez short scale bass body is warm Mahogany. I bought a bass to go with this axe.

I LOVE this axe. It's great for beginners and short people or people with injuries who can't play longer scale axes comfortably.

I highly recommend it! It's a blast to shred on!

Sharp fret ends, some dead spots with low action... But...

I put it in with a luthier who fixed and polished and leveled the frets...
...it plays like $1000

Great short scale guitar if you do some mods

By Sweetwater Customer from Santa Cruz, CA on July 3, 2019

This guitar is surprisingly nice with a set of 0.10 strings, new tuners, and a proper set up (and upgrade pickups for better sound if you really want to transform it).

I originally got this for my son when he was 7 but unfortunately he was not really interested in learning guitar. It sat in his closet for for 7 years and I was about to try to sell it when I considered playing it myself because of my hand issues and moving to short scale instruments myself. It must have had light gauge strings like 0.08 or 0.09 but once I put on a set of 0.10 strings on it I was surprised that it actually played and sounded quite good. This short scale is great for me.

The feeling of the neck is nice but a little thin so do not pull on it too much or it will detune but with a moderate touch it is good. The stock pickups are not terrible. The tuners ARE terrible so I replaced them with Grover 406C6 Mini Locking Rotomatic Tuners which were an incredibly easy replacement and perfect fit with no alterations. Other upgrades I have done include lining the cavity with copper shielding tape and installing (which was not needed but just a precaution) and upgraded with new pickups. I had a Seymour Duncan Custom Humbucker SH-5 installed in the bridge position with a coil-split mini toggle (this pickup splits extremely well) and a Lace Sensor Dually Gold/Hot-Gold in the neck position with a three way mini toggle (which has three incredibly different sounds. Lace had incorrect wiring diagrams though and it took a long time to get the right answer from them about the proper wiring). The two mini toggles fit between the two knobs on the guitar master volume and master tone. I had an Emerson capacitor put in to the tone pot.

I also spent a fair amount of time with the set up adjusting the saddle-pieces in the bridge and the truss rod to get just the right string height with no buzz and perfect intonation. Now it sounds amazing and plays nicely for hours on end with no hand fatigue. I also did some cosmetic changes so it looks nicer too! This is becoming my main guitar strangely enough.

dont buy it

the frets are razor sharp on the edge of the fingerboard, tore my hand up. shouldnt those come filed down? also, it cant hold its tunung to save its life!

Junk!

By Alfredo Ramirez from CA on June 10, 2019

Sorry, but this thing is a piece of junk. I bought it for my 12 year old so he can start learning. The bridge does not come adjusted, so you'll need to know about guitars so you can adjust it in order for the guitar to sound in tune at the middle/lower frets. It also doesn't hold its tune. I thought it was the new strings at first, but it's actually the neck of the guitar. You can tune it perfectly, but as soon as you rest your arm on the body to play normal; the whole guitar flexes and sounds out of tune. It's really unfair for a beginner because it seems like their fingering is not quite right. ...you would think this thing would be better made. I was looking for a good 3/4 beginner guitar, but this is really no better than a crappy $30 toy.
