Shines with fingerstyle

By Kathleen from OH on December 29, 2023

Just got this guitar and love it. Since I'm really into fingerstyle these days, this guitar shines with this style. You can strum, but the sweet spot is fingerstyle. It's beautiful! It needs a setup as the action seems really high. It's a lot of guitar for the money, and I'm a real Martin person too. Thanks Kent Sallaz.

Wonderful smaller body guitar!

By JC from Oakland, CA on June 28, 2023

I have had a 2023 Guild M-140 for a few months now. The build quality, playability, projection, and tone are great - simply an amazing value. Beautiful woods, frets, and overall build quality. It easily rivals guitars that cost 2x, and playability may even rival those that cost 3x. Also, one important factor for me was the 1 3/4" nut width so I could easily transition between this and other guitars with that nut width. One upgrade that I did, that I highly recommend to anyone with this guitar, is switch the strings to a set of low-tension, halfway-to-medium gauge. I first put on a set of EJ16s (which I love on other guitars), however it sounded a bit thin and small. Then I put on a set of Woodtone Country strings (low tension; gauges .125, .0165, .025, .0335, .0435, .0545), and WOW did that transform the sound! The tone is now rich and full band, more like an OM, and surprisingly good low end. A great match to the projection too. The guitar really came alive with those strings, and is hard to put down. Thanks to Cody for his help with the ordering!

A great guitar

By James Phillips from Urbana, IL on October 26, 2022 Music Background: playing guitar since fall of 1991

I have had this for over a year, and realized I hadn't reviewed it. It is a great sounding guitar, a perfect sit on the couch guitar at the end of a long work day. Good, balanced tone. Nice, easy scale (just under 25 inches). I had the Sweetwater team do a set-up, and they did a wonderful job. While this is not one of the US made models (the Westerly Collection is made off-shore) this is a great guitar regardless of where it is made, and one I would happily recommend to people looking for a smaller guitar.

Guild M-140 Natural-What a great guitar!

By Michael from Brighton, MI on July 30, 2022

After thinking about it for a bit, I decided to purchase this guitar. So glad I did! Many thanks to my sales engineer, Joe Holsclaw, for working with me and suggesting this model. It was in my hands the day after I ordered it. (Sweetwater IS the best around.)

I had a Guild dreadnought years ago, that I had to sell. Always regretted it. Now I'm loving this concert model. What a great value! All solid wood, exceptional build quality and components, light weight, and digging the open geared tuners. This thing is beautiful and sounds amazing.

If you've been considering the M-140, do it and you won't be disappointed.

Beautiful Guitar

By Ted from Mesa, AZ on April 1, 2022

This Guitar is even more beautiful than the pictures at Sweetwater or Guild! She's absolutely gorgeous! Lightweight, a dream to play! Notes ring out clearly and chords are sweet. The tone is well balanced. And did I mention how beautiful this guitar is?! Marshall was a delight to deal with... in fact that whole experience with Sweetwater and this guitar has exceeded my expectations. You won't regret purchasing one these!

A perfect couch guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on March 8, 2022

Of all the guitars I own -- acoustic and electric -- this one is the most easy and fun to pick up and play. While something this small will never have the volume or bass response of a dreadnought, the sound is pretty balanced and surprisingly loud. I actually bought this to replace a concert-sized Taylor that I thought sounded too tinny, and I've been really happy with the warmer sound of this guitar.

I can see why some people wouldn't like the thick poly finish, but I find that it makes the guitar feel more durable; this is the guitar I throw in my car to go jam with a friend, leave out on a stand to pick up and play, and otherwise don't mind banging around a bit because it holds up against scratches and dings.

wonderful Guild!

By James Phillips from Urbana, IL on December 17, 2021 Music Background: playing guitar since fall of 1991

I had this on my notification list for Sweetwater to let me know when it came in stock, and when it did, I pulled the trigger on it, and got it. I had Sweetwater do the set-up (thank you to my sales engineer Jordan for conveying my preferences to the set-up team) and couldn't have been happier. And then the guitar itself. Great full sound for a concert size guitar. I know some people may not care for the Westerly series of Guilds that are made offshore, but honestly, this is fantastic all the way around. Would highly recommend this guitar to anyone interested in a Guild or a new guitar.

Nice little guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on September 23, 2021

Beautiful guitar and well made. Just learning how to play so we'll see if I can stick with it. If not it won't be the guitar's fault.

Excellent guitar

By Mike from Upstate NY on April 4, 2021

I was very impressed with the craftsmanship. The guitar was set up nicely out of the box. Plays awesome and sounds as beautiful as it looks.

GREAT GUITAR

By Mike from Auburn Ny on February 24, 2021 Music Background: Played in bands for over 20 years and guitar teacher

I recently purchased this Guild M140 acoustic guitar and absolutely love it. Beautiful woods and playability was awesome right out of the box no set up needed.

Really wanted an M-40

By Jason Haskell from ABERDEEN, SD on February 18, 2021 Music Background: An eternal "guitar beginner," but recommitted to changing that story!!

Wow was I surprised. I really wanted an M-40, but my daughter started lessons and I thought this would be a nice little guitar to start her on. She is very petite and I like the smaller body and lighter weight to make it easier to manage and more fun to play. Because, if it isn't fun, we won't play. I thought it would help remove some of the obstacles to practicing (which it has, she loves it). Man does this little gem punch above it's weight class. It has such an even melodic sound and will handle fingerpicking so nicely. What surprised me is how strum worthy it was as well. Don't get me wrong, this is no dreadnaught. It lacks the bass and the super full sound that a big dread can give, but this thing delivers on so many other levels that you can't go wrong with it. Especially as a practice guitar, a cabin guitar, or a smaller, more transportable option this thing is magnificent.

If you are on the fence and don't have access to try out I would not be afraid to recommend rolling the dice on it. Sweetwater is always to understanding and willing to work with you. That being said, I can almost guarantee you it won't go back. Right now I find myself trying to convince my daughter to us my GS-mini to practice with because I want to play it!!!

The quality of this little slice of sweetness is has only piqued my interest in an M-40. Now I have to see if I can get my hands on an M-40.

Perfect Couch Guitar Size - Higher End Guitar Quality

By Sam from Philadelphia, PA suburbs on May 22, 2020 Music Background: 15 year amateur with goals to be a 20 year advanced player

I owned a GS Mini Rosewood for 10 days. Really liked it, but there was something about it that just seemed a little toy-ish. Maybe it was the scale length, maybe it was the materials. It had a real guitar sound though.

I then played a Martin 00X1AE. This was nice, but didn't love the looks. The guitar was also a little too big for what I wanted. I wanted a quality office/desk/couch guitar that I can comfortably play in any room of the house.

I then stumbled across the Guild M-140. I made the purchase, but wasn't sure what to expect. There were not many reviews online, and even less videos. However, when I received it I was instantly in love with it visually. Great finish and perfect size (not much bigger than a GS Mini in overall length, but with a longer scale). Playability was okay, so I decided to take it my local luthier for a proper setup (first time ever doing that, and it is well worth the few extra bucks). THIS GUITAR IS NOW AMAZING. This is my go-to guitar. It sounds 20% better than a GS Mini, feels much more comfortable than a full-body guitar to play, and looks absolutely stunning. It smells good, looks good, and plays good. Can't ask for much more than that for this price range. It's one of those guitars you can't stop thinking about, you just want to keep playing.

M-140 concert acoustic

By Joshua Bevan from Alameda, CA on May 3, 2020

Very pleased with the quality and projection of this smaller-bodied guitar. The action is set a bit higher than I'm used to but nothing that can't be adjusted to suit individuals tastes. Aside from a few rough fret edges, fit and finish seem very good for a guitar in this price range. Great service from Sweetwater as usual!

It’s nice

By Zach from CA on October 8, 2020 Music Background: Amateur

Very nice guitar in general. It's quite small and very easy to play. My gripe is the super thick gloss finish. It makes the guitar feel like it's made out of plastic. Don't let it's Chinese manufacture deter you if you're interested. The quality is superb. Great guitar for messing with at your house or porch. I'd my takamine jumbo out instead of this one.
