Genelec GLM SAM Loudspeaker Management System Reviews
If you've invested into Genelec's SAM studio monitor speakers, such as their 8300 series loudspeakers and their 7300 series subwoofers, then the Genelec Loudspeaker Manager (GLM) system will help you get the very best sound out of your setup. Sweetwater studio techs stand behind this system, which includes a sophisticated software platform coupled with Genelec's AutoCal hardware. The GLM software lets you manage levels, distance delays, and frequency balances of up to 40 networked speakers, all in one intuitive interface. At the same time, the included AutoCal hardware automatically measures, analyses, and adjusts your speaker settings, so there's no heavy lifting on your part.

You need these now!
This is a must if you own a Genelec speaker. The UI is clean and intuitive, calibrations are very quick and easy, and it helps 1) show you how bad your room is and 2) correct where appropriate.
GLM kit does not add gain to address dips, just helps attenuate peaks in your curve relative to your room. My advice: get this, treat your room, and don't obsess about a perfect flat curve.
I use this with a pair of 8341s, and honestly the only time I've ever not used GLM was when I bypass the curve to see how much worse it sounds without decent peak attenuation.
Your Genelec's are not complete if you don't get this
My room is treated and the 8341As sounded great so I didn't purchase this accessory, no let's say necessity, for about 18 months. It annoyed me that it wasn't included with a very expensive set of monitors. I finally decided to spend the... dollars and I'm glad I did. The imaging improved and I thought it was already great. I can make small eq changes and easily hear the impact. I'm on a mac with Catalina so I'm running the Beta 4.0 version that anyone can download and it's working fine. You've already spent a bit on your Genelec's so tip yourself you won't be sorry.
Making Great Even Greater
I just purchased a Genelec SAM speaker and sub setup which before calibration sounded pretty amazing. But after using the GLM calibration system, everything became even clearer and tighter with even more detail popping out. I really love the phase alignment calibration between the monitors and sub as that really improves the bass tightness and detail.
To any PC users out there, make sure to check the "Use Autocal Cloud" option before calibrating.
Worth it?
I have tried other room correction solutions and this is by far the best. If you are getting a SAM system, you have to have this, otherwise you will never get the performance you desire.
A must have
I have the cheaper room calibration software. The Genelec GLM software with the Smart Active Monitor system is far more accurate, there is no comparison. Genelec USA has by far offered the best customer service I have seen since the 80’s. I can’t thank them enough.
Beware
This product will NOT work under macOS Catalina.
I purchased the GLM Kit and a pair of Genelec monitors in late 2019. At the time I was running macOS Mojave and using Pro Tools 2019. The GLM Kit worked very well.
I wanted to upgrade to macOS Catalina but Avid did not have a compatible version of Pro Tools ready. As soon as Avid released a compatible version I upgraded and GLM stopped working. For the month it was working I felt it was well worth the investment and I decided to wait it out until Genelec released something that would work. I opened up several tickets with them over the next few months and each time their response was "we're working on it". They even suggested I use it virtualized which I tried but that is not an ideal situation. I signed up for their Beta program but that never materialized, and I was resigned to writing this off as a bad purchase but after close to five months I reached out to my Sales Engineer at Sweetwater and explained my predicament. I honestly didn't expect anything and just wanted him to know the history. To my surprise he allowed me to return the GLM Kit which I used towards another purchase. Kudos to him and Sweetwater for going the extra mile and understanding.
So, if you've read this far, I can honestly say that the product, when working was great but Genelec has failed their customers for a year. Sweetwater on the other hand couldn't have handled this any better.
