Guild D-20 Acoustic Guitar - Natural Reviews

6-string Acoustic Guitar with Mahogany Top, Mahogany Back and Sides, Mahogany Neck, and Rosewood Fingerboard - Natural

This Guild D-20 6-string acoustic guitar marks Guild's return to the US-made model that was one of the first to roll off of the company's Westerly, Rhode Island, factory line in 1967. This stripped-down guitar boasts top, back, and sides constructed of solid mahogany. The D-20's dreadnought body ensures that the guitar's voice is powerful and warm. Full Rich Sound

By RDRII from Lincoln, NE on July 19, 2023 Music Background: Hobbyist

I like this solid wood all mahogany guitar. I was searching for a made in the USA guitar that was solid wood and am pleased to be have found Guild. I am a hobbyist and absolutely love picking up this guitar while contemplating deep thoughts for research. It feels good in my hands. The neck and frets is smooth. No buzzing or grabbing for chords. Big shout out to my go to guide for all things guitar, Ray. He has a wealth of wisdom that never lets me down. After discussing my playing style and exactly how I want to play this guitar, he had it set up for me. It is played perfect right out of the box. Big thanks to the sweetwater crew and to Ray.

Guild D-20E Natural

I've had my D-20 since 2018 and every year the sound gets richer and better.
The guitar is fantastic, very well built and very comfortable to play.
Fantastic.

Wonderful tone

By Sweetwater Customer from Indiana on November 17, 2022

If the Guild D-20 were an EQ, the bass would be a controlled thump and the mid and treble would be slightly lowered. This might not be what everyone wants, but I really appreciate the tone. Plus, I'm looking forward to how the guitar might "open up" with time. I hope the e and b strings can find themselves a bit. But, even if they stay where they are, I'll be happy.

EVER HOLD A CANNON IN YOUR HANDS?

By Sheldon R. from Pennsylvania on December 30, 2021 Music Background: Long-time guitar player

Yes, folks, my Guild D-20 is a "sound cannon", whose rich acoustic tone, balance, warmth, and volume far surpasses many
of the more expensive models! At first, I was a bit apprehensive about buying an all-mahogany guitar, since mostly all my
acoustic guitars have a solid spruce top, which I just love. However, upon my sitting down to play this big boy, I felt the
rich, booming sound of a guitar that sounded like it had been played for 40 years. I could feel its vibrations deep into my chest. I highly-recommend this guitar to all. And as for the price, you absolutely cannot beat the Guild D-20!

When you call, be sure to ask for Mike Soper to be your Sales Engineer. I've been buying guitars and accessories from Sweetwater for quite a few years, and Mike has been super to deal with in every way! He will provide you with his expert
advice, and will answer any questions you might have---whether they be before or after the sale!

Perfect Guitar

You cannot beat this guitar for the price. It has a warm, rich tone and plays perfectly. USA build Guilds are hard to beat.

Owner since 03/20

Hi everyone, i own this guitar for 13 months now and every day i love it more. Even the way it smells each time i take it out of its case, hard to explain the feeling. Its a beautiful resonant guitar, very nice comfortable neck , feel and warmth of the solid mahogany to the tone, thin finish so you can feel everything about this beautiful instrument. I think its a big value copared to the price. And a really nice quality humidity controlling hardcase. Well done Guild!

Excellent Guitar / Great Value

This is an excellent guitar at a great price. I'm quite impressed with the sound, playability, and build quality of this fine instrument. Kudos to Guild and Drew Foster at Sweetwater.

A work of art

By Sweetwater Customer on May 15, 2020

I am so impressed by this instrument. It's clear from the second it's in your hands that this thing means business. The lows are especially stunning, ringing clearly with beautiful warmth and depth that you'd expect from a solid mahogany top. Every physical detail has been expertly crafted, and the satin finish feels great. Couldn't be happier.

Solid Strummer

Clear crisp tone with a nice deep resonance. Can't stop playing this high quality instrument.

THIS guitar, for THAT price?

By Sweetwater Customer from CA on January 22, 2020

This is a fantastic guitar. Very bold tone. I compared this to the Martin D15m. This definitely blew the Martin out of the water for flat picking and strumming duties. The Martin had the edge for finger picking though. This really outperforms it's price. I played this against a D40 Traditional and actually preferred this. If this is your budget, and you're looking for a nice country/folk/rock dreadnought, this guitar will serve you well. It was also very easy to play.

Nice Guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on May 16, 2019

Nice little old-timey guitar. No frills and all mahogany will make a good couch strummer and also nice for fingerstyle. Sweetwater sales rep Chris McCown was very helpful and a model of efficiency. Very happy with the experience.

Amazing Guild

By David from Rochester, NY on January 29, 2017 Music Background: Play for fun and amusement

I have always been a fan of Guild Guitars. I was sad to hear of having to wait nearly 2 years for the arrival of American made Guilds. Well that has arrived and I got my D-20 about a week ago. I am very impressed with everything about it. The way it plays, and looks, OUTSTANDING!!!! The notes have a very noticeable separation, while the bass notes have a woody tone to them. I would like to congratulate Ren Ferguson and Guild on a job well done! I have found the "keeper"

Wonderful

By Joe V from Tinley Park, IL on January 28, 2017

I was originally in the market for a Martin. I wanted either a D-18 or D-28. Dad has a D-28 and I really liked it...figured I wanted something along those lines. Well, 3k just wasn't in the budget, so I did some research and figured that this might be my best bet at the ~$ price point. I think I was sold after reading about Ren Ferguson and new Guild plant in California.

This is a very well-built guitar with a great feel. The satin finish isn't the same thing as the nitro finish on the higher end guitars, but it looks and sounds great...just know that there is a difference. The fit and finish is wonderful. It plays like a guitar twice the price.

Dad played it and said it feels just as nice as his Martin D-28. The tone is obviously different: The sitka spruce on a Martin D-18 or D-28 is brighter. But, there is something cool about the warmth of mahogany. It's not better or worse than a spruce top, it's just a different sound. I'd recommend this guitar anyone at any level. Well done Guild!

Best value in USA-made, all-solid, Guild D-20 vs Martin D-15M

By Jesse from North Dakota on August 14, 2016

The Guild D-20 is the best bang for the buck you will find in a USA-made guitar, period. While I will sing the virtues of the guitar itself, the best way to really underscore what a great deal this guitar is, is to talk about how it compares with it's main competition, the mighty Martin D-15M (preview: it trumps the Martin in every way and comes in at a lower pricetag).

I purchased mine from Sweetwater. At the moment, the natural sells for about $1279, and the sunburst for a little more. Meanwhile, the Martin D-15M has a minimum advertised price of about $1400 for the natural finish. Whatever configuration you choose, the D-20 sells for less (and comes in less than comparable Taylor guitars, and with better features, but as I am not super familiar with, nor fond of, Taylor's, I will not discuss them). In American guitars at the lowest price point, there are basically three sets I would tell people to look at. I'd of course tell people to try out the Martin 15 series. I'd also strongly suggest they check out the Gibson J-15, which comes in at the same price point as the Martin 15 series but has a spruce top and walnut back and sides (and a dovetail neck joint, by the way, scalloped bracing... it is fantastic). They are all wonderful guitars, but in my opinion, the Gibson J-15, Guild D-20, and Guild M-20, rule the bottom of the USA-made, all-solid acoustic guitar price point. And not just that, but the Guild D-20 comes in at a lower price than the Martin 15s or the Gibson. But there are no compromises with the Guild D-20. It stands toe to toe with the Gibson J-15 (both fantastic), costs less; and in my opinion, the Guild D-20 is arguably a better guitar than the Martin D-15M, and is undeniably a better value and made in a more traditional way.

The Guild D-20 encapsulates the vintage American-made guitar. It is designed to be sold with as much value as possible, but there are no compromises. It is made with all the bells and whistles, just none of the bling.

If I were to try to come up with anything negative to say about it, I would not be able to. I can't imagine anyone being disappointed unless they wanted bling, did not like mahogany, did not like big guitars, or wanted it to sound like a Martin or a Gibson, or wanted it to sound "modern". It is a very large (and large-sounding) guitar; it has no bling at all (other than the beautiful Guild logo and quite a fancy headstock); it encapsulates the very best of the mahogany and mahogany top sound; it sounds very much like a Guild and has an extremely vintage tone.

If you are looking in this price point, you have to try the Guild D-20, M-20 (concert-sized version), and soon they will have spruce-topped versions called D-40 and M-40 if spruce is your thing (I don't know the price point, but I would imagine they'd be slightly more).

Guild scores a Knockout

By Donald Storm from FL on June 15, 2021 Music Background: Singer/Songwriter/Performer

Just received my D20E in the natural finish and I am ecstatic with it's look, feel, sound, and playability. The wood and finish are flawless. The sound is expansive with tremendous range from solid full bass notes to extra crisp and penetrating highs. The tone control smoothly adjusts the sound to your preference. The action is good and the intonation is perfect. The included case is one of the best I have seen shipped with any guitar. I have only 2 minor issues. The lack of a battery box, and the output jack integrated into the strap peg preventing use of strap locks which I use on all my other guitars. Anyone who has played any model of Guild acoustics will easily transition to this guitar. If you are new to Guild this guitar will make you a believer.
