A Joy to Play

By Simon Camberos from Granada Hills, CA on July 14, 2023

This really is a fantastic guitar, not just for the money, but as a dreadnought style guitar in general. I use it for both bluegrass style flatpicking and fingerstyle guitar, and it excels also at both. For under $, it's hard to find another guitar that looks, feels, and sounds this good.

Great Value

By Sweetwater Customer from MI on June 28, 2023

Very well built guitar and great value. Sounds and feels better than some American made guitars that I've owned and played.

Guild + Sweetwater + Erik Bothwell (Sales Engineer) = 3 Thumbs Up

By Rodney-Dean Smiley from Redmond, WA on March 30, 2023 Music Background: Playing for over twenty years, purely for personal enjoyment.

Was in serious need of a "rut buster;" this guitar is just what the doctor ordered. I've been playing guitar for over twenty years, and was in desperate need of a new guitar to help me break out of a rut. After doing quite a bit of research, and already owning an all-mahogany OM model from Guild's Westerly Collection, I was pretty sure Guild's D-140 would be exactly what I was looking for, as well as a good addition to my guitarsenal, and after working with Erik, my Sweetwater Sales Engineer, I was all but positive I was making a good decision. However, upon taking delivery of my D-140, I soon realized it wasn't a "good" decision, rather it was a "great" decision. Being fortunate enough to own a Martin D-28 for years, I knew it would be a tall order for the D-140 to hold its own against what is generally considered the gold standard in Dreadnoughts. While it isn't quite a D-28, it also didn't set me back $3,000. The D-140 not only packs great punch in the low and high range, it also projects great resonance throughout the midrange. So if you're looking to get the most bang for your buck, I highly recommend you take a good long look at Guild guitars. The fit and finish is excellent (Note: pictures do not do it justice), and the tone is far better than one would expect for a guitar at the same price point. Couple that with a company whose customer service is second to none, and a Sales Engineer (Erik Bothwell) who can speak from a position of expertise, and it's a no brainer. Unless something changes drastically at Sweetwater, they have a loyal customer for life. I honestly cannot think of a better company to deal with, and Erik is aces when it comes to a sales engineer who can speak from a position of knowledge and experience. It sure is nice to finally find a company who truly cares about its customers in this day and age.

Guild d-140

By Sweetwater Customer on December 27, 2022

Let me start by saying that my first impression of this guitar was slight confusion. The tone was strangely unlike any guitar I've owned in the last 5 years(I've had over 100 guitars pass through my possession due to buying and selling online). After digging in and warming/opening it up, I've really come to admire and love this guitar. The best way I can describe the tone is- a touch of the Gibson dryness and thump with a touch of Martin resonance and a drop of Taylor zing on the high end. Think J-45/Martin road series/Taylor 110 mixture. I know it's an odd description but it makes for a great guitar. It's also very well built and nicely put together. It fits right in with the Alvarez md60bg and Eastman e1d in bang for the buck all solid guitars.

A Burst of fun

By Sweetwater Customer from Texas on November 17, 2022

This is a wonderful guitar that plays above its price point. Playable right out of the box. The Antique Burst gloss finish is beautiful.

Beautiful Guitar

By Bob on February 15, 2022

I did a lot of research to find this Guitar. There is nothing like it in this price range. Solid wood, fully glossed, beautiful binding, and inlay. Great tone and set up. Paul at Sweetwater was very good to me. I highly recommend this guitar. Keep on playing my friends.

9 month review

By Tony Loving from Belleville, IL on January 3, 2022 Music Background: Gigs out and records some

I bought this guitar from Sweetwater 9 months ago and have waited to get the feel for the guitar before I wrote a review. I've been playing Guilds for several years now. Gigging out with them, recording with them, and just noodling around the house with them. My first Guild was a D-40 with a burst finish made in Corona. The neck was chunky, the nitro finish got sticky in the summer, and the tone turned dark, really dark. So I put it away and took to a D-240CE for playing out. But I LOVED the look of that D-40 guitar. So when I found the D-140 on Sweetwater back in April of 2021 I thought that I'd give it a try. When I got the guitar in my home I compared it to my D-40 and honestly, the D-140 was better made, with a nicer finish, and it sounded WONDERFUL. Plus Sweetwater set it up so that it played like butter right out of the box. From what I understand Guild sends D-40 components to China for assembly making it much more affordable. The playability is great. The neck profile is thinner (not thin as a Martin, but thinner). The top on the one I got has some nice figure in the spruce. The finish was beautiful. And the sound was exactly what I had been looking for in a Guild. The ONLY thing I didn't like was the Staytite tuners, but then I've never liked them because I just can't seem to keep certain strings in tune with Staytites. So I swapped out the tuners for skeletonized Ratio tuners (my new favorites) and I put in an LR Baggs Ibeam pickup. I am now a very happy guitar player. It doesn't matter what you normally play, the Guild D-140 antique burst is the best guitar you can buy for under $2000, period. Heck, it's probably equal to guitars that cost $3000. Buy one before Guild wises up, you'll be glad you did.

Sweet Guitar and amazing value

By John Moffitt from SIOUX FALLS, SD on May 8, 2021

I owned the natural version for over year now. The other reviews are spot on. I've played vintage Guilds and the Westerly series really stays true to the Guild heritage. It really compliments my friends '03 Martin D18 and holds its own. I'm a fan of Cordoba and really had my eyes on he Westerly series, but none of my local shops carry them. I'm stumbled across a killer deal Factory reburb/like new with/case under $500. I rolled the dice and man I played Guitars 3 times that price that didn't sound as sweet.

I recently just purchase a Guild Bluesbird Iced Tea, as good as the 140 is, the Bluesbird takes it to the next level. It is flawless and has one of my favorite pickup combos, Seymour JB/59.

Love Guilds

By Tony Loving from Illinois on April 20, 2021 Music Background: Singer Songwriter

I own a couple Guilds including a Guild D-40 made in California. The tone of the D-40 started to get a little dark and so I decided to buy a new mahogany guitar. After reading all the reviews and watching the videos on the Guild D-140 I decided it was worth a try. Let me tell you that this was the best decision I've every made. The D-140 is a wonderful guitar, it's got a sweet even tone across all the strings, it's loud but not too punchy. And it has that signature Guild growl on the low end. I was so happy with the sound that I sat down and wrote and recorded a new song with it! The folks at Sweetwater knocked it out of the park with their service too. This guitar arrived accurately set up and ready to play and polished to perfection. I have never been happier! If you are considering buying a solid wood guitar stop right here with the Guild D-140, this guitar plays and sounds as good, if not better than guitars that cost 3 times as much. You'll be glad you did.

Worth Every Penny

By Simon on April 1, 2021 Music Background: Musician/Composer/Engineer

...best guitar I've played for under a $1000...really well made, very light, and really projects, frets really well finished, great tuners, and it holds its tuning remarkably well,...a little on the harsh side as with most new guitars that aren't like a 3k Atkins or Collings or whatever, but I'd say it'll warm up with time...actually came with a decent setup also, it could be better, but small enough that it's beyond my skills and so will drop it into a luthier at some stage...

Wow

By Ryan K on March 23, 2021

This guitar is amazing. I had considered an Oxnard built D-40 but this Chinese built guitar is every bit as good at a fraction of the price. This all wood dreadnought really sounds amazing. The guitar sounds bright and articulate and there is plenty of sustain and projection when you play it loud. You can't go wrong with this guitar at this price point. The included padded gig bag is really nice with a very premium feel. Sure, you could buy a guitar that was 3 times the price but it wouldn't be 3 times better. The factory setup is pretty fantastic with a really nice action. Buy this guitar!

Difficult to believe....

By Lowell from Florida on February 6, 2021 Music Background: Just love to play and sing acoustic stuff

I already have (OM-size) "off-shore" Guild, and have been really pleased with it. Needed a new dread , so starting looking for a Guild. I played and American-made (Oxnard) D-40, and a D-140 (made at Guilds factory in China). Was there a difference? Yes. Was it $3000 worth of difference. No way. This D-140 is everything I could ask for from a solid wood dreadnaught: Loud, yet crisp, with a sustain that is just amazing. Fit and finish seems perfect, and the "hard bag" is really nice. If you're looking for ALL a solid wood Spruce/Mahogany dread, for well under $1000, I highly recommend you take a close look at the D-140.

Big Bang for the Buck!!!

By Sweetwater Customer on November 18, 2020

Had this guitar for a few years now. Nothing better for the money. Plays great, love the neck and sound. Give this a chance and compare to other guitars in similar price range. Guild's are great guitars!

Why is this not very popular?

By Greg from San Diego on August 22, 2020 Music Background: 40 years

This Guild D-140 should be very popular! It sounds and looks like a $3,000 guitar. For $... this guitar is big bargain. I can't believe I didn't know about this good thing a watch a lot of videos on YouTube and read a lot of reviews that's how I discovered this guitar. It has solid bass and sweet treble and volume. And so beautiful. The finish is perfect on antique sunburst. The only thing I didn't like are the strings that came with it. I replaced it with Elixir 12-53 phosphor bronze and I put LR Baggs Anthem Tru Mic and it sounded like a huge guitar like a D-55. Now I'm thinking about getting a D-40 with a natural finish.

Great Guitar!

By Sweetwater Customer on August 19, 2020

Was looking for a full sized Dreadnought and this one caught my eye. After letting it adjust to the local climate for a few days, the D-140 plays wonderfully. The set up was on point! I expected the guitar to be heavier, as as my solid D'Angelico Bowery is a tank, but it is light. I dig the tones, hooked it up to a Seymour Duncan Woody and it sounds great amplified. The bass in this guitar is so good. Great mid-range price guitar. Side note, the guitar came with a small clip on mic that is not mentioned anywhere on SW's or Guild's website.

Outstanding guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on July 26, 2020

A guitar of this build, quality and attention to detail should really be in a higher price range. After a slight truss rod tweak and a string change to my preferred gauge, it fell and sounded like I'd owned the guitar forever. I originally intended this to be my live "knock about" guitar to try and preserve the life of a vintage Gibson and a Martin I normally use. However, in less than a week I've become very attached to it! Don't let the lack of a hard case and the Made in China tag on the is guitar fool ya; this thing was made to be played and built to last.

Absolutely Gorgeous Guitar

By Carl Salaski from Dothan, AL on April 29, 2020

This guitar is amazingly gorgeous. Love the headstock logo. Neck feels good in my hands. Nut width is perfect at 1.75. Plays easily and sounds wonderful. Not too bright, well balanced tone. Great deal on an all solid guitar.

New Guild D-140

By Greg Mathwick from OH on April 20, 2020

Just received this Guild D-140 Antique Burst today. The first thing I noticed was how light weight this guitar is. No finish flaws to be found, the only thing I will do is sand the saddle down a little. The sound is somewhat powerful and has good balance across the strings. This guitar will be with me for a long time. Buying from Sweetwater makes absolute sense and the fact that you can see good pics of what you are buying helps seal the deal for me.

Beautiful look and sound

By Sweetwater Customer on April 10, 2020

After trying several guitars in this price range, I stumbled across the D-140 and fell in love. Really like the wider nut. The guitar looks and feels great and is fun to play. Will be hard to put down.

Guild D-140 Minnesota

By Glen from Minnesota on September 17, 2022 Music Background: Beginner at age 62. Played less than a year. This was my second guitar purchase.

I bought the Guild D-140 Antique Burst as my second guitar, about 2 months into my learning process as a beginner guitar player. I wanted to wait a few months before I gave my honest opinion of the guitar. First of all, it arrived very promptly, packaged very well. I waited a day or so to open the box, was cold up here at the time. Just a beautiful instrument. The finish on this guitar is so detailed, really impressed. As far as the sound, I didn't have a lot to compare it to, but anyone who has heard it and or played this guitar can't believe the rich sound it delivers. It sounds like a Guild. It is such a distinctive sound. A top quality instrument. The case it came with is really nice, very protective. After learning some of the terminology used to describe these instruments, I wish I had known that the neck is a little "chunky" compared to some guitars, as it would be a little easier to"reach" and move down an up the neck as a beginner. I did have Sweetwater do a "setup" for me, seems the strings could maybe have been lowered more than they were as it isn't the easiest on my fingers to play. But being a beginner, I didn't have that knowledge until a few months into playing. I really feel proud owning this instrument, it was a good choice and dealing with Sweetwater was a good choice. All in all, very pleased with my purchase and very pleased with the way Matthew and Sweetwater serves their customers. Thanks

Sounds as good as it looks.

By Cedric Giese from VA on July 25, 2022 Music Background: Originals, alternative, rock, singer-songwriter

I've read a lot of the glowing reviews for the Guild D-140, and mine won't be any different.Very nicely balanced tone, really great playability out of the box and if anything, it's too good looking! It also feels very comfortable to hold and feels light despite the all-wood construction.

Very good projection (better than my 1968 Gibson acoustic)and sounds full-bodied and warm but not too brassy.I played a bunch of more expensive Martins and Taylors in person and the D-140 just sounded better.

This is my second Guild ever- I played DCE-1 True American from 1997-2008- and if these first few weeks are any indication, this Guild and I should have a long, beautiful relationship.

D-140ATB Westerly Collection

By B C from New Orleans on August 31, 2022 Music Background: Hobbyist

Purchased 08/2022. Shipping was FAST! Arrived with NO damage (what a relief). Gigbag very nice with nice appointments! I expected less to be perfectly honest. Guitar is BEAUTIFUL lovely burst beautiful finish. Attention to detail in craftsmanship is definitely apparent. Pictures don't do it justice! Tone is really nice, kind of "all it's own ". Was surprised by a slight amount of slack in tuners yet they work just fine, probably the only negative I can find. Very playable out of the box however I will put my preferred strings on and have a setup done, action is okay yet my preference is a little lower. All notes on all strings sound as is expected, fretwork seems on point.
This is my 1st Guild purchase, love and recommended!!!

Outstanding dreadnaught, hard to beat value

By Nels Gilbertson-Urtel from Saint Paul, MN on August 22, 2021 Music Background: Guitar player and singer

I've had a Guild D-140 for almost a month now and I have a hard time putting it down. Excellent balance up and down the fret board, plenty of projection but not bright or brash. Just a full, punchy, resonant all-solid dreadnaught sound for a great price. The tone is already warming up nicely after only a month and becoming even more versatile.
