Fender GB George Benson Twin Reverb 2x12" 85-watt Tube Combo Amp Reviews

85-watt 2-channel 2x12" Guitar Combo Amplifier with Neodymium Custom Aesthetics

The Fender George Benson Signature GB Twin Reverb tube electric guitar amplifier is an ideal amp for players searching for a detailed clean sound with a huge amount of headroom. When designing the amp, Benson needed it engineered to translate every nuance of his hollowbody tone, so the 85-watt, 6L6-powered Twin was chosen for its abundant clean power. The addition of neodymium 12" speakers and a pine cabinet shaves 13 lbs. off of a traditional Twin. And George appointed the GB Twin Reverb with custom aesthetics that will look as classy as he does onstage.

I AM SO GLAD!

I am so glad I bought this amp! Next month will be two years since I bought my GB Twin, and it continues to amaze me. Such a sweet sound. It brings out every nuance of your playing, it really does. It's very sensitive to how hard or softly you're picking, and at the same time will cut through the rest of the band like a knife through butter.

Over the years I've owned a Bandmaster, two Super Reverbs, a Musicman, a JC120, a Polytone (which I still have) and this GB Twin ihe best of the lot, bar none.

AND, it's only 53 lbs! Buy it! You won't be sorry!

Love the amp!!

I'm a jazz guitarist and I had been thinking about getting this amp for quite a while. I have an old Twin, a Hot Rod Deville and a GB Deluxe (among others). The old Twin is a great sound but it's super heavy and it's also getting noisy. So, while it was always my favorite sound, it's been getting problematic to use on gigs and too noisy for recordings. I've been trying to find something I like as much, hence the Deville and the Deluxe. They are both great amps, but they never really replaced the sound and presence that I get with a Twin. This new GB Twin is Fantastic! I must say that it is really unlike any other amp that I own: The power comes on very gradually with the volume control which is unlike other Twins and even the Deville. This is particularly nice when you don't need a lot of volume. When you play a bigger room, however, there is considerable power, but I have to turn it up to about 5 to get enough volume. I waited to write a review because I felt I needed to play a variety of different rooms and gigs before I understood how the amp responded in different circumstances. The sound is great in any setting! It sounds warmer than any other Twin and it seems to have a very fast even response so the guitar feels great in your hand. I don't know if that's something others relate to, but I sometimes find Fender amps to be a little 'peaky". Some notes jump out and others seem lost. This amp seems to respond to your touch much more naturally. I don't know if that's in the speakers, the tubes, a combination, or what. But it's a pleasure! It's also lighter than my Deville, which makes the amp just about perfect!!!

George Benson twin Reverb

I gotta say Sweetwater did an outstanding job. The service was great and their response to the problem I had with the original amp was quick. This Twin Reverb is so beautiful. The sound is superbly exceptionable. So clean and mello when I need it to be and has a lot of power to give it the kick I need when I need it. To the crew at Sweetwater a big, big thanks for the great service. And to Jonathan, thanks for being there when I needed you to be!!! Thanks for keeping up your excellent reputation.

SWEET, VERY SWEET.........

By Lee Muller from Aiea, Hawaii on September 15, 2016 Music Background: Part time professional.............

It’s been a few months since I bought this GB Twin and now it’s time to post a review……..

This is the second Twin I’ve bought from Sweetwater. The first one, to be honest, was just too heavy to schlep around, so I got rid of it. This GB Twin is 13 pounds lighter, which makes a world of difference to an old jazz player like me. So for that it gets a big thumbs up.

Soundwise, this is a sweet amp. So far it’s done almost everything George Benson said it would in his video. I’m playing an Ibanez JSM100 with just a touch of delay from an Earthquaker pedal, and really, this amp is the absolute bomb. Sweet tones from the front pickup and dirty ratty tones from the bridge.
When you need extra volume, well, this Twin Reverb can deliver, no problem. The best part about that is the tone remains unaffected. I can crank this baby up and still get a nice tone, something most amps cannot do. This is truly a great amp.

Now the only reason I’m not giving it the full five stars is that the reverb is disappointing to my ear, not what I would expect from a Fender amp. It has a tendency to “run away” with itself and I just can’t have that. I’ve compensated for that by adding just a touch of delay which adds a nice sustain to whatever I’m playing.

All in all, this was a very good buy for me. I’m very happy with this amplifier, and if anything ever happened to it I’d be on the phone to Greg Savino at Sweetwater the very same day ordering another one.

Quality issues and under-delivers sound performance

By Jazz guitarist from Florida on July 26, 2022

I had a '65 reissue Twin several years ago, but sold it because it was too heavy for gigging. When the GB Twin was introduced with a few mods per George Benson, plus a 13 pound weight reduction, I purchased one. The mods on channel 1 were great - lots more adjustment for fine-tuning the volume. The new design speakers, which save weight, do not, however, reproduce the sound quality of the '65 reissue. I mainly play jazz with an archtop and the tone is just not there. I listened to older recordings I made with the '65 reissue and compared to the GB Twin. The GB sounds thin and lacks the attack I got with the '65. I went a step further and did an A/B with my '64 Hand-wired Deluxe Reverb and it beats the GB Twin for tone. The other big issue has been the poor quality of the electronics. I had to replace a pre-amp tube within the first year, then the red panel light the next year, then a bad power tube last year, and recently a blown capacitor. I haven't had these issues on other Fender amps, so maybe this was just a lemon in the bunch, however, based on tone I would not recommend this amp as a weight-saving alternate to the '65 reissue.

Snap, Crackle

An expensive amp. It has a low hum, crackles. Not a clean sound at all. I have another Fender twin that does the same thing. It must be a product defect
