Golden Age Project GA-47 MKII Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone Reviews

Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone with Cardioid and Omnidirectional Polar Patterns, Power Supply, Shockmount, Microphone Box, and Metal Flight Case

When the Golden Age Project released the GA-47, it became an immediate hit. Now, with the new-and-improved GA-47 MKII Large-diaphragm Tube Condenser Microphone, it’s an even better-sounding mic. The major difference between the original GA-47 and the MKII is the inclusion of a premium Roger’s circuit board, in addition to old-school point-to-point wiring. The Golden Age Premier GA-47 MKII’s sound has been honed through meticulous real-world testing to capture warm, sweet recordings. You’ve heard it on countless iconic sides from the Beatles, Michael Jackson, and Frank Sinatra, among others. Here at Sweetwater, we’re particularly impressed with how the GA-47 MKII renders any recorded source with absolute authority.

High Level Mic, Waited To Own for Over a Year

By Son V. from Santa Monica, CA

I've owned and used many high-end mics over the decades. Many awesome mics that were really cheap, some high-priced mics that underwhelmed, and MANY in between. I've only kept about 4-6 high level condenser for my home studio as go-to mics. This is in the top three, hands down. I wanted to wait until I had it for over a year, having used it for many applications, before doing a review.
I am more than impressed, to say the least. Like others have said about tube mics - let them warm up, at least 30 minutes, if not 45-60. This one needs that time. Once warmed up, lights out, it's ready to work. Interestingly, it acts as if it's neutral, but it isn't - and that's a good thing. You record another track with another mic, and you see just how warm and multi-dimensional the recorded track sounds and feels with this. Nothing strident on the high end. Very detailed and record-ready sounding. Granted, I also feed it into either an1176, LA2A or LA3A after the preamp, then into the interface. It needs minimal EQ.
I've used it on many sources: vocals (lead, backup), percussion (tambourine, shakers, bells, snare, cymbals, etc.), acoustic guitar, horns (sax and trumpet) and it has performed beyond my expectations. I'm not pleased easily, but this makes recording much easier and records the sources accurately.
I wouldn't hesitate to buy this again if given the chance. Golden Age did an excellent job with the build and quality of this mic. It doesn't get nearly the recognition it deserves due to all the competition out there. I'm just glad I own one and will be keeping it for as long as I record music (which may be forever).
If you're on the fence with this vs. the competition, give this serious thought. There's nothing to lose and everything to gain in adding this to your microphone family and recording arsenal.
