Gretsch G9240 Alligator Mahogany Round Neck Resonator - 2-color Sunburst, Padauk Fingerboard Reviews

Acoustic Roundneck Resonator Guitar with Mahogany Top, Sides, and Neck; Padauk Fingerboard; and Eastern European Hand-spun Biscuit Cone - 2-color Sunburst

First developed in the pre-amplified 1920s to accompany the much-louder horn instruments in popular ensembles of the time, resonator guitars are truly a uniquely American innovation. The Gretsch G9240 Alligator Biscuit Roundneck Resonator stays true to the design and features of these early resonators with an all-mahogany body and Gretsch Ampli-Sonic diaphragm resonator cone. This aluminum cone is hand-spun in Eastern Europe and kicks out an impressive level of volume and mesmerizing resonant midrange. A gorgeous padauk fingerboard with abalone dot inlays responds beautifully whether you are playing chords or using a slide. The G9240 lets you explore the styles of old country, blues, and early folk as well as whatever sonic innovations you envision. Resonator players at Sweetwater love the G9240 Alligator Biscuit Roundneck Resonator for its playability and tone.

This thing is solid. It feels great and works great for a variety of different playing styles. Great for writing rhythm parts and lead parts. The sales team did a great job of setting it up and providing excellent advice for complimentary products. Thank you!

Sweetwater is the BEST company i have ever dealt with !!! As soon as you order the item your personal sales engineer( in my case Patrick Ortiz) emails you with all your details and asks if you need any other help !!!! The guitar was shipped the same day and i recd it in 3 days from purchase even with the virus pandemic going on !!!!!! The guitar arrived in great shape and even in tune .... I will always buy from these guys..... Oh P.S. the candy is good too !!!! thanks Sweetwater Tom C.

Beautiful in looks and sound.

Full disclosure, I'm an acoustic player and a rez is not within my expertise but I wanted one and this thing not only has the majestical depth of a bottomless canyon, it's by far the best looking decor in my fairly nice looking place. If I were forced to describe its tone I wouldn't out of integrity but hypothetically, it's like Gregorian monks playing sitar on a banjo at the crossroads. ...I'm sure the Devil has heard this thing and I'm sure he was conflicted.

Love it!

Super duper AWESOME!!!

For this price I didn't expect much. I bought this guitar to be a work horse. I plan on taking it in and out of the house all summer. I expect it to get battle scars from being bumped into the patio table, possibly some beverage spilled on it occasionally, etc. I honestly thought it would look and feel like some kind of cheap knock off.

Much to my surprise it is an absolutely beautiful and well made instrument. The tuners are Grovers made in the USA, and the resonator is spun in Europe. I think the only thing made in China is the chassis.

The sound is just like the old vintage delta blues stuff. This morning when I was tuning it, it sounded like I was getting some reverb from it. I put my ear to it and plucked again, I could distinctly hear the string vibrate then a nano second later the cone reproduce the sound in much louder fashion. I found that fascinating.

I bought it for finger style blues and want to eventually learn how to play slide. In spite of the fact that the nut is rather high, which is good for slide, but it isn't so high that finger picking is hampered. It stays in tune well.

I would absolutely recommend this guitar to a friend.

Gretsch G9240 Wood body Resonator

By Mark Dawson from Mustang, Ok. on June 20, 2018 Music Background: Guitar player, Intermediate

Lot of guitar for the money, 12 fret, very easy to play, nice fit and finish, hoping it will "open up" with age like my last one (donated it to my niece). Laminated top, that's why it didn't get 5 stars, Sweetwater's customer service, from the sales engineer to the people who pull your order, and do setup / inspection, and shipping / receiving deserve 10 stars !!!! for the job they do.

Misaligned Neck, body, bridge, and tailpiece

By Jerry Smith from Las Cruces, NM on August 12, 2019

I recently purchased guitar a Gretsch G9240 Alligator resonator guitar that is so blatantly mis-built that Sweetwater could not have possibly inspected this guitar. The issues include:

1. During the spraying/finishing process for the body, neck, and headstock, sawdust-like rough spots on the neck were sprayed over, resulting in five noticeably high bumps that would catch your hand each time you moved up and down the neck.

2. The builder/assembler/finisher drilled the screw hole that attaches the bridge to the resonator cone at a significant angle, and then proceeded to tighten down the screw until the screw head warped the cone.

3. During initial assembly, the neck was attached out of alignment with the body to the extent that the sixth string, during final assembly, was outside the bounds of the fretboard at the higher frets.

3.a. The builder first attached the tailpiece along the center axis of the guitar, noticed the string-alignment problem, and then attempted to compensate by filling the screw holes with a putty-like material and moving the tailpiece more to the treble side of the body.

3.b. In order to align the strings over the neck of the guitar, however, the builder also had to move the bridge more toward the treble side. This guitar, however, is a resonator guitar, with a large recessed cavity that holds the resonator cone and the attached bridge. Thus, the bridge can only be positioned slightly to the treble side, due to the limits imposed by both the resonator cavity and cover. The builder then attached the resonator cover off-center toward the treble side, as much as possible with the resonator cover barely covering the bass side of the resonator cone cavity. Then, the builder forced the cone as far as possible to the treble side of the guitar and tightened the strings to hold it in this off-center location. Needless to say, the strings would continually try to reposition in a straight line between the nut and the tailpiece.

4. For no apparent reason (related to the misaligned neck), the builder rotated the resonator cover clockwise approximately five to six degrees off the axis of the guitar.

The guitar industry has what are called B-stock guitars. These guitars have one or more imperfections that prevent them from qualifying for sell at retail value, so they are noted as such and sold at reduced prices. This guitar is so bad it would not even quality as C- or D-stock, if there were such categories.
