Gretsch G6134T-58 Vintage Select Edition '58 Penguin - Vintage White Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Chambered Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, Ebony Fingerboard, 2 Dual-coil Pickups, and Bigsby Tailpiece - Vintage White

If you want the sound and style of the Gretsch Penguin from the year that defined this iconic solidbody electric guitar, then you need to get your hands on the G6134T-58 Vintage Select Edition '58 Penguin. It's a perfect re-creation of the first generation Penguin to feature Gretsch's Filter'Tron humbucking pickup, which they'd introduced at the Chicago Summer NAMM show in '57. What's more, this remake comes decked out with gold hardware, including a period-accurate Space Control bridge with a pinned base and Bigsby B3GB vibrato tailpiece. It even has a classic banjo armrest! Top it off with nuances such as dot-style knobs and the penguin on the floating pickguard, and the G6134T-58 Vintage Select Edition '58 Penguin is a perfect example of what a re-creation guitar should be.

Custom Shop Quality From Japan?

By Jerry from Austin on January 7, 2022

These Penguins are really something. Fit and finish are just spot on! I really do think they are on par with just about any custom shop instrument I've played. I would'nt even consider spending 2.5 or 3 grand more just to say I had a C.S. guitar when these are so good. I happened to pick up one of the Koa guitars before they sold out, but all of these Japanese Gretschs are fantastic, IMHO. They have a unique sound you just can't pull out of anything else. I'm afraid my poor Strat ain't getting much love the last few months, but, oh well. Anyhow, many thanks to Geoff Allen and team for getting it done for me. LOVE it!

Excellent guitar

Just a great sounding and playing guitar. I love the clarity and tone from the TV Jones pickups - big and fat with a lot of detail. The quality is outstanding, really a pleasure to pick up and play this guitar. Substantial weight to the guitar, reminds me of a Les Paul when I pick it up but much prettier and versatile. You wouldn't regret getting one, classic Gretsch tone. Great guitar!

Beautiful guitar!

Completely amazed once I opened the case and strummed my first chord. The only gripe I have is the under the fretboard where the neck joint is, it appears the neck isn't finished/painted all the way. Obviously most folks won't care, but I did notice it after going over the guitar. Great for P&W!

Sounds amazing, has the classic gretsch sound and looks beautiful. Top notch build quality - this is built like a rock with incredible attention to detail.

Outstanding!!

By Ken from Alaska on July 10, 2017

Just an awesome guitar by any measure!! It sounds fantastic and looks drop dead gorgeous! I have had this for a couple weeks now and I really can't find any actual defects, small or otherwise. The build quality, the set-up from Sweetwater and the service from Matt (Sales guy) were, well, PERFECT!! I have owned a few guitars over my 30 years of playing, but this was the best "out of the box" guitar I have ever received! I felt the quality of my 2014 Gretsch 6120 was exceptional but this "feels" even better! I have played it in a jam session and it just sounds great in a room full of instruments.

OK, lots of gushing but I will pass on some subjective items for your consideration. The paint color is "Vintage White" not bright white so if you are not expecting "vintage" that could surprise you. It is done very well and looks like a guitar that you found under Grampa's bed. Sweetwater's pictures are really pretty accurate.

The "space control" bridge works great, but the aftermarket Compton bridge I had here works better. Pure preference. (Space Control looks much better though!)

The gold plated armrest will show where your arm sits after awhile. Its the nature of the beast. It does not bother me as I intend to play i, a lot! However, some folks get a bit persnickety about these things so I thought I would mention it.

What can I say, I am still honeymooning but I definitely love this guitar!! Even my wife is impressed at how easily it has assimilated into the collection! Usually I tinker quite a bit to get guitars the way I like but this really was ready for action on arrival!

If you are like me and always wanted a White Penguin with Filtertrons and a Bigsby, then it is time to make your move! These have not been available very much over the years!!
