Gretsch G6128T-57 Vintage Select Edition '57 Duo Jet - Cadillac Green Reviews

6-string Solidbody Electric Guitar with Chambered Mahogany Body, Maple Top, Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fretboard, 2 Single-coil Pickups, and Bigsby Vibrato Tailpiece - Cadillac Green

The Gretsch G6128T-57 Vintage Select Edition '57 Duo Jet isn't just a dead-accurate re-creation of a 1957 Duo Jet solidbody electric guitar, it's a re-creation of a very rare limited-run Duo Jet that was coveted by collectors even in its day. Specifically, Gretsch only produced a small number of these flagship guitars in their eye-catching Cadillac Green finish, which they further upgraded with gold hardware, including a period-accurate Synchro-Sonic bridge to go with the Bigsby B3CBDE vibrato tailpiece. Another historically correct pairing is the Vintage Select Edition '57 Duo Jet's T-Armond single-coil pickups (a special TV Jones reproduction of the original DynaSonic pickup) and a Treble Bleed circuit outfitted with Squeezebox PIO capacitors. All told, this guitar is an absolute gem, even among all the fabulous guitars in Sweetwater's packed warehouse.

Amazing

By Cham from Edison, NJ on December 27, 2022

I decided to buy myself a Christmas gift and am beyond impressed and happy with this purchase. This guitar plays and sounds incredible. It reacts well with my amp and really makes the tubes sing. Sweetwater's add-on setup was perfect; immaculate intonation and tuning stability when using the Bigsby.

The fret wire is prone to scratching when using D'Addario NYXL or similar hardened strings but regular D'Addario XL strings seem to play well.

Love it!

No need to play my other electrics..does everything I want and more.

One bummer...a real challenge changing strings on the bigsby..

Beautiful in looks and in sound

By Ryan Vennell from LAKE JACKSON, TX on September 30, 2021

My dream guitar and it's everything I hoped it would be. Build quality is everything you'd expect the price point to be. It looks and sounds like a million bucks.

The one tiny change I would make is that on the Synchro-sonic bridge, they should include screws that can be dropped in in place of the thumbscrews used to lock in the intonation. Most players seem to want to put regular screws in there, and they're very hard to find. Without them, it's very difficult to palm mute.

Incredible

I've wanted this guitar for a long time and it did not disappoint. This is an incredibly well made instrument, practically flawless. This Vintage Select series is no joke. It plays like a dream and has sustain for days. I'm honestly a fan of the chambered body - not only because it make it light, but I do think it produces a great tone. You'll notice as soon as you play a few chords unplugged. It's got a great 50's P90 sound, you can take it any where. It has a crystal clear sounds that are very shapable with the on board controls. It's not going to do sludge metal but responds well to gain. You do get some hum but it's still very musical. I've owned this guitar for a few months and love it. The one thing I did not care for on this guitar was the synchro sonic bridge. The adjustment screws kept coming loose and even falling out while playing. I suppose I'm a relatively "active" player, but the bridge was sliding around ruining intonation. Also, I'm no luthier.. but the idea of plastic saddles just doesn't sit well with me. I switched it out for a tunomatic style bridge with rollers. The rollers certainly help the bigsby stay in tune and the rosewood base helps to keep it from sliding like the plastic base on the synchro matic - also a tone improvement. I also put a vibramate spoiler on the bigsby which makes it string like a Gibson vibrola, a great modification to any bigsby. If you're considering this guitar, just get it.

Gretsch Cadillac Green duo jet

By John from Mt. Vernon IL on August 12, 2019

This is a great guitar! Sound is fantastic, tv Jones t admins pickups have that perfect Gretsch sound. Fit and finish is second to none. This is a top quality guitar that can out perform other guitars in the same price range. Jeff my sales engineer gave me a good price and the guitar arrived when he said it would and in perfect condition. The best thing about Sweetwater is their service. Like they say you will be amazed!! Thank you John S.

Timeless versatility.

I've owned two pro-model Gretsches (and a few Electromatics), but while they were fine guitars, they just didn't excite me the way this Duo Jet does. I have to admit that I had never even played a Duo Jet before I bought this one - but I scoured the internet for any mention of them. I was reading reviews, listening to clips and soaking up what I could from user groups. I was hooked. My main choice now was whether to go with Filtertron, T-Armond or Dynasonic pickups because I definitely wanted the Cadillac Green finish. This one has the T-Armond TV Jones version of the original DeArmond pickups - probably the finest pickups I've played over the past half century. The Guitar exceeds my expectations in every way - tone, playablility, craftsmanship and just sheer beauty! It's a guitar that doesn't require you to play any particular style or genre to sound good. It's more hollow than not, but easily transcends that pigeonhole. The pickups have so much character - blues, crunching rock, fingerpicking, chiming clean if you like. I get excited every time I pick it up. The controls actually work and the Bigsby is divine. This one I can honestly say I will keep. I don't know how to say it any clearer - if you are tired of the predictable, give one a test drive. It can basically do whatever you want it to do - and do it better than you ever expected.

Gretsch makes great guitars

By WBJ from Western North Carolina Mountains on July 12, 2018 Music Background: 50+ year player, Blues, Rock

Son just bought me a new 6128-T-57-Cadillac Green.
Bu far the best guitar I have ever had.... Quality is superb Sound is superb!! Always had Gibson's... This Gretsch is far and away a superior instrument! This now my second Gretsch and the quality and sound id amazing.. Love the electronics... Master volume makes it easy to set up pickups and keep the sound quality the same when you play at low volume or blow out the door volume. Just a great guitar and set up perfectly out of the case!

Absolutely Stunning Guitar

By Briton Weise from West Lafayette, IN on May 3, 2021

This guitar is absolutely gorgeous. I had been eyeing this guitar at Sweetwater for quite a while before I finally decided to pull the trigger on it. This is by far the most I've ever spent on an electric guitar, so I was a little concerned that I wouldn't like it. Man, was I wrong. The quality of this instrument is like nothing I've experienced before. The craftsmanship and attention to detail is outstanding. I have another Grestch with a Bigsby, which can be quite difficult to keep in tune. I was surprised by first the weight of the Bigby tremolo arm, and second by the rock solid tuning. It's incredible. The fretwork is awesome, and the setup was perfect out of the box. I will say, the only annoyance that I've had with the guitar is the fact that the floating bridge likes to wander during string changes and when it gets bumped hard. It makes it difficult to keep the guitar's intonation set. This is the reason for 4.5 stars. But, I knew that going into it, so I can't complain too much as it is a historical recreation. I'm sure I'll find some way to combat that minor problem. It has surely not kept me from enjoying this fabulous instrument.

Mostly Awesome

By Sweetwater Customer on January 28, 2020

Probably the prettiest guitar I’ve ever had. The fit, finish and playability were perfect out of the box. The U neck feels more like a 50’s C to me and is very comfortable. I don’t use the Bigsby aggressively but it stays in tune well. The feel and is very much like a hollow body instead of a solid body. I have only used it for one gig, at reasonably high volume and it was very well behaved with no feedback. Clean and low to medium gain distortion are probably where this guitar excels. Higher gain may work but probably isn't its strongest area. My only complaint is the synchro-sonic bridge. I love the look, but for me, it is uncomfortable due to the screws on top so I’ve replaced the synchro-sonic with a space control bridge. If you are a Gretsch fan or looking for something different this might be the one.

'57 Gretsch Duo-Jet

By Steve from Detroit on April 19, 2017 Music Background: Play it all....no other way.

This product was everything I expected, and more. never bought an axe without playing it prior to purchase before, Sweetwater does it right. It plays like an "Old" 335, feels much like a Les Paul, and sounds like the originals of rock, blues, and country did back when tubes and vynil ruled the musical world, yes, I'm that old.
Besides the sound and playability, this guitar looks GREAT!!! Cadillac Green, I call it "Money Green", and Gold....WOW! No flaws, balanced tone all the way up and down the fretboard. I did tweak the neck a tiny bit, probably because it was shipped in very cold weather, and this guitar is REAL WOOD, with all the richness that only quality tonewood produces, did I mention it has a chambered body? More player's value here than many guitars at twice the price. Even my wife loves it.

Looks cool

By Sweetwater Customer on March 8, 2021

It's a great looking guitar. However, the bridge is pretty annoying, which makes it hard to intonate and keep in tune.
