Great guitar with some mods

By Ryan from Indy on March 27, 2023

I work on guitars and like to tinker, so I put a new Seymour Duncan vintage P90 and the Seymour Duncan pearly gates in the bridge. New cts pots and new wiring with a Switchcraft switch. Also added a Graphtech wraparound intonatable bridge. And also added Grover locking tuners.

I did not like the pickups that were in it. The humbucker was very thin sounding. The P90 wasn't bad, but I prefer the Seymour Duncan. Without the mods, it would be a three star.

A VERY Cool Gretch Sounding Guitar for Peanuts

By Jon Reynolds from Smack Dab in the Middle of the USA on December 23, 2022 Music Background: Beginner

I have another older Gretsch with this body style which has humbuckers in it, and aside from one issue which I'll get into in a minute it's great guitar. Sadly, my guitar collection FAR outweighs my playing skills, but if you'll be up for a beginner's input I'll give you an honest opinion. If you've got a decent tube amp this thing sparkles like Roy Orbison's sunglasses. It has those vintage tones that were there on so many old records, and you won't have to run it through a bunch of pedals and digital crap to find them either. Great sound for this price range.

But one con I have to note is the intonation problems you get with these solid wrap around tailpieces. My older Gretsch Electromatic had the same type until recently when I replaced it with a better adjustable one. These solid bar wrap arounds are common on lower priced guitars. I think LP Jr's use them, as well as a lot of PRS economy models. But if you go into it knowing that'll be an important upgrade later, then this is a kicker deal on a dark horse of a guitar. I like it because of the simplicity, but it'll take you where you want to go, no question about it. Plays well and the construction is right up there with some of the nice Squires that are coming in from overseas lately. I got one in that bodacious aqua and I feel like I'm driving a '57 T-bird.

That P90 though...

By Logan on December 22, 2022 Music Background: Studio Musician 10+ years

Haven't tried any of the streamliner series, so I picked this one up when the price was right. I was a hesitant when I saw the bolt on neck at a $400 price point but figured I'd try it. The neck feels good, perfectly chunky IMO, frets ends are smooth with no issues. The wrap around bridge is okay for a budget guitar. The broadtron bridge pickup is good but definitely a little weak. What makes this guitar worth it and then some is the P90! I dont know what factory makes the P90 for Gretsch but they're doing something right, it rips! The output is so much hotter than the broadtron that is sounds like your adding a boost pedal when switching to the neck position. Great budget guitar with the Gretsch vibe.

Great setup and sound straight out of the box!

By Joao Da Silva from Brooklyn, NY on December 21, 2022 Music Background: Hobby-ist

Gretsch may be one of, it not THE, best guitar brands making inexpensive no frills but stylish and dynamic sounding starter guitars. This is my second Gretsch and I could not be more happy. It played great straight out of the box. I have since replaced the strings and it keeps delivering. It stays in tune, electronics work seamlessly, and looks amazing.

Love The Vibe!

By Michael Lazaro from Minden, LA on July 7, 2022

I find myself reaching for either this beautiful thing or my Gretsch hollowbody. The P90 sound is so sweet to the ears and yet I usually find myself playing the mid position balancing the P90 and the humbucker. Love the simplicity. Love the Vibe. Can't go wrong!

Gretsch G2215-P90 Streamliner Junior Jet Club Electric Guitar

Enjoyed it right out of the box. Plays well. I'm a beginner and this plays easier than the guitar I was loaned.

Happy Holidays Everyone. I think my sales engineer Austin Zackrich was a bit surprised when I wanted to treat myself to another guitar for Christmas, but he was ready to deliver with his no nonsense approach to get me playing a guitar I like and is in my budget. I am a Les Paul guy, but wanted to go off the grid a bit. This Gretch is it. The sound and tone cannot be described. If you accept something other than Sweetwater, than you are accepting an imitation for great service. God Bless Austin and Sweetwater

This is an amazing guitar

By Sebastian Serrato from TX on December 3, 2021 Music Background: Guitar player

I did not expect such a quality instrument for the price. The neck is absolutely awesomeness for that price range. The P90 pick up with humbucker mix gives me some good fat sounding tones that i was not expecting. The bridge is comfortable. For the price it needs minimal neck adjustment. I was hesitant to get it,my expectations were close to nothing but now I can't stop playing it. It is a guitar that anybody will enjoy to have and play from beginner to advance player

1 Month Later

I have been playing this guitar for over a month now. I was amazed by the playability, craftsmanship and sound. After playing it more than an hour a day, I love it even more! Don't be mis-lead by the price. This is a quality instrument. If you're thinking about buying it. Do it.

Dig that p90!

By Bob from SC on May 11, 2021

Was looking for something with a P90 that was affordable. Read the other reviews and this one was it. I have to say I am very impressed with this guitar! Ordered a new adjustable bridge/saddle in advance but haven't installed it yet, intonation was spot on! Has a great sound and I love the looks of the Mint Metallic! A great addition! Thanks to David for helping with this one!

Great little guitar!

Very nice guitar, low price but high quality!

Can't put it down!

By Sweetwater Customer on March 8, 2021

I was looking for something affordable to set up with open tuning and raise the action a bid for slide and didn't want the usual humbucker / single coil set up and this got my attention so I took the plunge. I don't really play a lot of slide so I wasn't too fussy, didn't want anything cheap but not expensive either. So much for that plan.. This guitar is a blast, totally different than anything I've ever had and I've had a lot in 50 years. Forget all the stereotypes about humbuckers vs single coils this HB is every bid as bright and cutting as my strat the P90 is great also, I have an SG special w/P90 and this is different but just as good in it's own way and that's great because why would I want it to sound the same? I don't know what kind of mojo Gretsch uses on the vol/tone, I roll both back on everything else a touch occasionally but you get to around 6 or so and anything else and it's mud, not so the Gretsch, roll them back between 7-8.5 and it actually gets brighter and I've found amazing tones all the way down to around 2, it's just a little tweak and you get another nuance to inspire you I kid you not in the first 2 days I've played about 20 hours and not the same old noodling endlessly this really inspires me and sometimes I'm like "whoa where did that come from"? It came from this guitar. If you're thinking about it for whatever reason just go ahead, this has been one of the most pleasant surprises in all my years. It does sound great with slide BTW but I think I'll relegate that duty to the SG this is just too much fun, I definitely see another Gretsch in my future.

Great Gretsch

By David on December 30, 2020

Great right out of the box. I really like the sound the soapbox and toaster pickups have together. It is relatively lightweight and is real comfortable. Can't beat the price either. Happy I got it.

I love it

By David from Copley, Ohio on December 20, 2020 Music Background: Extensive

Great guitar, and not just for the money. It is well made and has a great sound. The combination of the P90 and hum bucker pickups creates an amazing sound. The guitar needed some minor setup to lower the action but it played great out of the box. It looks so cool and plays so hot. And not to heavy. Recommended highly, especially for the money.

Fills in the gaps your current guitar arsenal may be missing

By Curt Hess from Lorain, OH on November 22, 2022

Fit and finish is great (regardless of price). I found the neck to be super comfortable and the fretwork was very clean. The P90 in the neck position is certainly a highlight and works perfectly with the "Gretsch" sound of the bridge BT-25. Quite honestly, it's like having a Les Paul Junior/Special with the added bonus of Gretsch's unique sound at the flip of a toggle switch. It's the most fun I had with a guitar at this price point. A simple, straight-forward, and great sounding guitar. Visually, the mint metallic w/classic crème plastics looks great (maybe not everyone's cup of tea initially)...but pictures don't do it justice, in my opinion.

Great value - Fantastic after one upgrade

By Sweetwater Customer from Tallahassee, Florida on February 22, 2022

This was my first electric guitar, and I love playing it. The only downside was that the humbucker was noticeably thin and weak compared to the P90--even to my novice ears. My local guitar tech swapped it out for a Seymour Duncan Pearly Gates zebra. The difference is amazing and well worth the extra bucks.

Very Solid for Price

By Sweetwater Customer on November 11, 2020

I bought this guitar with the intention of swapping out the pickups off the bat, so that is a big caveat to my review. That said, I did play with the original pickups for about a week before replacing them.

To start, this is a very well made guitar, especially considering the price. It needed a setup when I first got it, which is to be expected. After that, the guitar plays beautifully. The neck is very comfortable, it's very light, and just really enjoyable to play. My other guitar is a large hollow-body Gretsch, so by comparison this feels almost like a toy (not in a bad way) and like I could just toss it around. If you're looking for comfort, I could see this being great for someone who needs a guitar that they can stand with for several hours. Additionally, the guitar stays in tune very well, which I think could be attributed to the wrap-around bridge. The compensation on the bridge is pretty good, although the low E string is slightly higher than the rest which I'm pretty much powerless to fix. That said, it doesn't bother me much and I think it's a fairly easy guitar to set up and get good playability out of.

Looks-wise, this thing is gorgeous. I know people always say "the pictures don't do it justice," but I actually believe that to be the case with this one. No pictures that I've found pick up the metallic flecks in the body, which are very subtle but just really cool looking. The neck is a really neat, pleasing color that fits well with the body. The headstock is also pretty thin, which I think looks great with the smaller body. Add on top of that the cream components and the gold knobs and this thing is just beautiful. I know that doesn't make any difference in terms of playing, but it doesn't hurt.

Lastly, the sound. As I said, I bought this with the intention of replacing the pickups, so take my review of this part with a grain of salt. The P90 in the neck has a really fun sound. It was not the sound that I was looking for, and I did swap it out, but there was a part of me that considered keeping it. It's a very thick, wooly sound that you'd expect from a P90, but just really fun to play with. There is a decent amount of buzz, which is sort of a non-starter for me, but if that doesn't bother you and you're going for P90 sound, I think you'll be pleased with the neck pickup.

The bridge pickup is, frankly, disappointing. P90s are known for having a high output, and the one in this guitar is no different. Couple that with what feels to me like a very weak bridge pickup, and there is a noticeable volume drop when switching between the two. This may not bother you, but it is something to note. Apart from that, I think the bridge pickup just doesn't sound very good. The sound is somewhat anemic and not enjoyable in its own right, and especially so when compared to the neck pickup. Others may disagree, and I would advise watching videos to get a sense of the sound, but I will say that the bridge pickup was the big disappointment from this guitar when stock (hence the 4/5 stars).

Overall, I think this guitar is a fantastic value for the money. It seems well-made, is a joy to play (and look at), and has a pretty good sound. I ended up replacing the neck pickup with a TV Jones Magnatron, which I am thrilled with (like a Tele neck but without hum), and the bridge pickup with a TV Jones Classic Plus, which is a huge improvement on the stock pickup. With those upgrades, I feel like I have a very high quality guitar.... That said, if you plan on keeping it stock, I think this is still a very high quality guitar for the money and would recommend it.
