Dunlop JHF1 Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face Pedal. Excellent reproduction of the original. Adds that little extra to the sound - giving it a Purple Haze feeling.

The cool factor is through the roof

By Sweetwater Customer from Georgia on September 14, 2022

Sounds as amazing of course, which I already knew from owning the mini. But this one is so much cooler. I cant fit it on my board of course, and I have to use a 9v battery..but the cool factor is through the roof!

BEST FUZZ EVER

By Kevin Morrison from TX on August 21, 2021

I have played A LOT of fuzz pedals in my days. Some expensive legends and cheaper bang for your bucks. And I got this with the intention of modding it up but after getting it and plugging it into an Orange CR120 with a marshall cab, my jaw dropped. It's so much more vocal and raw than any germanium fuzz face or big muff I've ever played. And it cleans up I to an almost overdrive like clean sound. You need this in your life. Shut up and but it right now! WHAT ARE YOU WAITING FOR?!

Excellent Fuzz Pedal

By William Weeden from Mckinney, TX on June 22, 2021

I love this pedal!
I did not purchase the pedal to mimic Hendrix's tone exclusively, though I did want something that could fit that era, as well as similar contemporary styles of blues/psychedelic rock, and it does this with great success while taking up the smallest footprint on my board. The Hendrix FuzzFace mini is very responsive making it also quite versatile. This was the best sounding of the Dunlop Fuzz Dace pedals in my opinion.
No regrets on the purchase.

Just Right

By Robert from OH on January 7, 2021

I love this pedal. I've had mine since around 2009 or so...in the meantime got a mini version of the Geranium (red) fuzzface and like it, but most days of the week I'll use this one. It's big and bulky and built like a tank, mine has been used and abused and keeps coming back for more, calling to me to unplug the mini red and plug in the old turquoise tank. Along with a Fulltone Deja Vibe it's pure magic to my ears and my soul. I've switched almost entirely to a non-battery set up recently, but will gladly reserve a drawer full of 9v batteries for my JH1 fuzzface and hope it lasts another ten years. Just remember to unplug when not using and it's actually really easy on batteries. I like mine right up front first in line anyway so it's easy to remember. If you're looking for that late 60s fuzz, that Machine Gun Izabella-like vibe then here it is. Get a Deja Vibe too and there you go...time warp back to '69/70 and I'll see you there.

Hendrix Fuzz Face

By Aaron Wolf from Pennyslvania on July 27, 2020 Music Background: 20+ years live music experience.

I own the Copper Bonamassa, The Eric Johnson, a 90's Red Germanium, and this Hendrix Fuzz Face. There is something really special about the Hendrix. It doesn't have as much gain as my Red Germ, or the EJ, but it doesn't NEED as much. It has a little more midrange warmth. It's just a great Fuzz pedal.

Best Fuzz Pedal You Can Ever Own

By Commish from Nashua NH, USA on November 20, 2019 Music Background: Pro musician and producer

I've used so many fuzz, distortion and overdrive pedals in 44 years of playing guitar, it's amazing it took this long until I found the best fuzz producing pedal ever. It's a vintage recreation that faithfully reproduces the tones of rock and blues rock artists from the late '60's through the mid-'70's, and because of this, it lacks the kind of features/appointments most guitarist are used to. There is no input for power, so you'll need a handful of 9V batteries when you gig out. There is no LED lamp to indicate when the pedal is active. The footprint is huge and will consume a lot of pedal board space. The knobs are simple top-hat plastic with set screws, and are large enough to tweak with the toe of your shoe. The only negative comment I have is that the input/output jacks are in the reversed position, but this is what you get when you go "vintage". The sonic shaping is really outstanding and truly authentic. It's also great when you want just a hint of controlled fuzz or when you want full-blown distortion - the kind that only a fuzz pedal like this can provide IMHO. The price is nice too.

FUZZZZ

By Walt on November 18, 2015

I know I'm giving this 5 stars, but there are some cons to be discussed with this pedal. The input and output jacks are on the opposite sides from what is standard, there's no indicator light, the pedal is huge compared to your average mxr size box, and it only runs on a 9v bolt battery. But that's all apart of that vintage nostalgia right? So as long as you know what you're getting into you won't be disappointed. This thing is a vintage recreation to the letter so you will receive no modern luxuries. However, other than the size, lights, 9v plug in jack to a power supply, and switched jacks are easy and cheap upgrades if you can't deal with the vintage thing.

The sound of this pedal really depends on your amp, which to me, is really fun. You get a different vibe depending on the amp. Make sure you play this thing through a good amp. Plug into a nice tube amp, crank the volume and fuzz all the way up, and every negative comment in this review will disappear and you'll hear why I gave it 5 stars.

All Rule BUT,

By Roctor from Brentwood TN USA on May 31, 2013 Music Background: professional songwriter/performer; recordist

I was fortunate enough to obtain a Ltd Ed JH BC-108; however, I also was able to A/B it with the "Space Saucer" version (the blue one) w/ the same transistors. The circuit boards were identical but the Ltd fit my pedal board better (and was actually what I ordered [from another company]). If one knows how to play with feeling, it is impossible NOT to be able to approximate Mr Jimi. I adore the way it shows me how Jimi obtained that Marshall sag: crank the pedal up and you have it, and I am including my Danelectro 15 W "nifty Fifty". Imagine how it sounds through my Fender valve "Woody" (EL84s), VOX AC30 (British-made) and the Duo-Verb Line 6 100W !!!! The delineation between notes is shockingly clean cranked ... (to my ears, much better than the germanium version.)

Fantastic Fuzz

By Tom from Ormond Beach, FL USA on September 19, 2012 Music Background: 28 years of guitar playing, giged almost every week back when I lived in NYC

Favorite dirt box! I own a pile of pedals and this one is just too much fun to play. It probably can't serve as your only drive device as it does one thing LOUD distorted fuzz. I have owned a bunch of fuzz boxes and all do not work in a live setting as they disappear in the mix. This one is more focused and tighter than most fuzzes, probably from the silicon clipping diodes. It stands out in the mix of a full band! I tested it through a 59 Bassman reissue with a strat that has Bare Knuckle Apaches, sounds amazing. Then I plugged in an LP with 59 Classic humbuckers. The sound was a little thicker, still tight and focused but still fuzz. I wanted to see how it would react through a high gain amp so I plugged the Strat into an Orange. It now was what I expected from a Fuzz as it obliterated the signal( in a musical way)but was not tight or focused. The pedal reacts so different in front of different amps. I waited over a month to review it so the honeymoon would wear off and I still look forward to plugging this pedal in. Simple, Big, Loud and pleasing to the ear!

Definitely more bite characteristic to silicon fuzzes. Very versatile and more dynamic than some big muff type pedals.

Just wish the I/O was on opposite sides, to line up with all the other pedals on my board...otherwise, is awesome!

Sometimes only a Fuzz Face will do

By Lucas Shoults from CHICAGO, IL on November 12, 2020 Music Background: Gigging Musician (15+ years) Session Musician (5+ years)

Guitar: Strat style
Amp: Blackface style

Traditionally I am a Tone Bender user, but during COVID my gig pedalboard hasn't seen to much play time. I wanted a single pedal that I could just have in front of my amp to make it easier to pick up the guitar when I have 15 minutes.

The pedal itself is fantastic - Fuzz control is dimed, I use the guitar volume to clean up and it works brilliantly. I do wonder how it will cut in a band mix on its own, but I'll update this review the next time I get to play live.

Also, there is something to be said for a pedal that isn't a simple box, doesn't fit perfectly on a board, and even just needs a 9V battery. The Fuzz Face makes me smile...and puts me in a better state to play.

Fuzz Face

By Dan on July 30, 2016 Music Background: Been playing for three years

This pedal is absolutely nasty. If you figure out how to dial in your desired tone, it just sings. Like others have said, the silicon Fuzz Face can be a bit finicky. To be completely honest, I got one as a gift and loved it. Unfortunately, it started to malfunction about a month later. I just contacted Sweetwater and they sent me a new one (free of all charges), which has been working great for a long time. Personally, I love the analog fuzz sound, and this pedal is perfect for that.

Primative, but Awesome!

By J. Troy from Fort Wayne, In. on February 24, 2012 Music Background: Musician.

Let me start by saying that I love this pedal because I love the sound of Jimi Hendrix, If you like his sound then get this pedal. The pedal is however, primative. No indicator light, no dc input, no frills, just great Jimi Fuzz. I solved the dc input problem using a One Spot and a dremel tool to make a hole to run the wire through, and as far as the light, well I like to think I know what's going on on my pedal board. If you're looking for a multipurpose drive or distortion with multiple tones, keep looking. The pedal is also rather large compared to other stomp boxes, and surprisingly so for the small amount of simple electrical components. It may sound like I'm just pointing out negatives, but if you want a nostalgia inducing sound and feel like I do, add this to your board, tweak it, and rock on!

The only distortion pedal anyone should ever need.

By David S. from Prescott Valley, AZ on March 31, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist and Drummer since 2009

If I could afford a 1969 Dallas Arbiter model, I would buy it. But, I don't have that kind of money, so I bought this.

While I don't know exactly the difference between this model and the dark blue mini one, seeing that both contain BC108s, this one is a lot more polite. Don't get me wrong, this thing rocks, and sings so lovely. The other one is just crazy, too much gain, and doesn't even look cool.

At the end of the day, the Fuzz Face is probably the simplest mass-produced distortion unit available, and that's why I am giving it four stars. It sounds brilliant, but, in my opinion, costs twice as much as I believe it should. Then again, and let's be honest, Hendrix was the original Fuzz Face guy. Before Allman, Gilmour, Harrison, etc, it was Hendrix, and we love his tone dearly. So, to give credit where it's due, they have attached his name to the best Dunlop model currently available. I even find this to sound better than the Eric Johnson and Joe Bonamassa models. Those are variations of the Fuzz Face; heavily modified. Then again, so were Hendrix' back in the day. Either way, this thing is just lovely. The vintage appeal is also brilliant, I love the switched inputs and reliance of a nine volt battery. Checks every box, just at a price. Try and get it used if you can. I was fortunate to get mine new from a different source for a portion less than all other retailers. Plus, at the end of the day, you have a brilliant guinea pig to start with if you decide to dig out the soldering gun and mess this guy up real good. Lovely pedal, the very best new, affordable offering of the classic smiley from yesterday.

And the perfect "neutral" distortion unit at that. No tone knob needed. Be sure to run it cranked into an angry tube amp and use your guitar's volume knob to shape the tone.

You already knew this. Buy it now.

Fuzzy Logic

By Deve on May 28, 2010

This is great sounding unit. I owned the original, purchased new in the 60's and this is it. Is it worth $170? No. I can build it for less than $20 including an enclosure, and in fact I did. The BC108 transistor sells for only 40 cents each so it isn't special. Can I make it look this cool? No. So if you want this sound and to look cool too then buy it. Now if you can really play like Jimi, that would indeed be something to behold!
