Fulltone Full-Drive 1 Overdrive Pedal Reviews

Overdrive Pedal with 3-way Voicing Toggle

The sought-after sounds of Mike Fuller’s collectible pre-MOSFET Full-Drive II pedals (sans the Boost) come to players everywhere in the slimmer, simpler Fulltone Full-Drive 1. This JRC4558-fueled dirt box’s 3-way tone toggle will please Full-Drive lovers of all eras. It includes the original full-mids Comp Cut voicing of the earliest orange/black Full-Drive II and the Flat Mids and Vintage modes of later blue/cream versions. Its deliberately downsized enclosure is a better fit for today’s bare-bones boards, and 9–18-volt operation gives the Fulltone Full-Drive 1 room to grow as players’ tastes do. True bypass operation preserves tone and performance.

Done searching

By Michael Miller from NY on January 14, 2022

I researched this pedal for a while. I use a Marshall DSL40CR with an older British made V30 speaker. Ive been through almost every OD and Dist pedal out there. The second runner up to this pedal was my MXR Classic OD. The FD1 has a great volume control. You can back it off and crank the gain for a softer distortion sound or set the vol around three and lower the gain and push your input tube for a great rock/metal sound. I bought this for a number of reasons but the main one being the old school comp cut(which does flex balls!). But I find myself using the Vintage mode the most. Running into an already gained amp channel sounds amazing ! The flat mid mode is usefull as well. Great for 7 string or drop tuning. Or a mid honker amp lol! Note: This pedal also runs on 18V which is manufacturer recommended for more volume and headroom. I will definitely try that out asap.

Phenomenal

By Mike from Utah on June 11, 2021

I have many screamer pedals from various brands, and this one takes the cake. Every selection option is very useful, and this is a pedal that tends to stay on all the time for me. I primarily use it for blues, but love the slightly pushed rhythm tones I can get from it, and it's a monster when placed in front of another drive pedal. Could not be happier.

Fulltone Full-Drive 1

By John Bayless from WA on April 12, 2021 Music Background: Played semi-professionally back in the mid 70's to the 80's

This is a great pedal and a welcome addition to anyone's pedal board!
Similar to my original Ibanez TS808 Tube Screamer with the addition of the voicing switch.
Definitely would recommend it if you are considering an overdrive pedal!

If you only use one pedal in front of your amp... this is it.

Just received the Full Drive 1 and it is one of the best overdrive pedal I have used to date. Ran it in front of a 64 Princeton, 90s Vibro-King and then a 65 Princeton Reverb. There are numerous options to shape your tone and dial in the right amounts of distortion and drive. From a sweet fat sustain, to crunch, to a clean boost this pedal does it all.

Very Nice

I put this pup in front of my Rockerverb MKIII and it tightens up the sound nicely. The sound pleases me a great deal.

Simple Straightforward

By Steve from Dallas on July 7, 2019 Music Background: Home Studio Recording, Guitarist

Great build quality, great vintage tubescreamer tone but with more clarity. This is among the more transparent of overdrives I've tried. The famous tubescreamer bass cut is here. Really tightens up your tone and helps cut through a mix. Great size, no bigger than a regular boss pedal. I always really liked fulltone overdrives. I've owned a few over the years and they're all excellent. This one is no exception. This an easy to use pedal, stacks well with amps, overdrives and fuzzes and sounds good on its own too. It is the old school 808 tone without the heavy price tag. The switch changes the tone a little. It is noticeable but it is more subtle than obvious except for comp cut where you'll definitely notice the big jump in volume. What I like most about this pedal is your guitar signal really comes through the pedal. It doesn't overtake the tone and there is no bad setting on this. It'll sound good no matter how you have it set.

Nice Bit of Rock and Blues Grit

By Bill Harris from Charlotte, NC on May 26, 2019 Music Background: 60's rocker with a home studio.

Nice pedal through my Supro 1605R tube combo amp with a 6L6. Quiet and good sounds in all Nice pedal through my Supro 1605R tube combo amp with a 6L6 set clean. Fairly quiet with good sounds in all settings from light grit to a nice crunch. Not a metal pedal, but just right for blues and rock. This my first Fulltone pedal and I'm very impressed. Well built and super affordable. I'm using the 18 volt power supply.

Amazing, and a steal

By Sweetwater Customer on April 26, 2019

I think this is one of those gems. One that every guitar player should have but sadly not everyone will give it a fair chance. It has the sound of the 90s ones and sounds really smooth. I run it on 18v as the headroom is better this way. 9v to me sounded a little to brittle on the top end to my preference.

Awesome

By Bruce from Ohio on September 14, 2018

The Full-Drive 2 is a staple on my pedalboard. However, sometimes I would only want to use the OD, not the boost option. The Full-Drive 1 allows me to do that. I get the same amazing Full-Drive tone in a smaller package, which allows me to save space on my pedalboard and stack other pedals. I must add that I still use the Full-Drive 2 on a different board, where I can utilize the boost as needed. If you are a player where pedalboard space is of value, the Full-Drive 1 is the same epic, rugged pedal in a smaller footprint. Very happy Fulltone decided to make this product.

DRIVELICIOUS

By Marco from Texas on August 14, 2018 Music Background: Student

5 Million stars ********. My problem with other OD pedals is that many get a muddy bassy sound and sometimes impossible to trim low frequencies. The Full-Drive 1 is perfect in all frequencies. It lets you dial any kind of tone, mid scooped, mid rich, clarity, muddiness, anything you want (you got it ). Thanks to the toggle switch and eq controls. I am using it in front of a driven Fender Hotrod Deluxe. I really like is it's effectiveness in cutting low frequencies. The acclaimed OCD did not work for me because it is too rich in low frequencies. The Full-Drive 1 can either cut or preserve low freqs.

Best Full-Drive EVER!

By Louie G. from Chicago on July 8, 2018 Music Background: Blues, Blues-Rock Guitarist

Mike Fuller's reputation for making outstanding effects is obvious, but plugging into this reincarnation of his best Full-drive just blew me away. Crisp, clea,r all your tone is there and then some. So much better than a Tube screamer of any kind. You get some mids but its seriously not annoying mids, they are very pleasant and mix in so well with the overall tone of your guitar and the pedal. All I can say is this pedal needs to be heard and played, cause what this pedal does to your sound is undescribable especially for serious Blues guitarists. Robin Trower has been a fulltone player for many yrs, and you can def get that Trower tone with this fulldrive, and try it after a univibe unit, its like Bridge of sighs has taken over your rig. This is a Full-Drive to own.

Nice Pedal

By Jay on May 19, 2018

I like it very much! Seems to like most of my amps but it can be stubborn in certain modes but you can always find a great tone. I really love the feel of the sustain on this pedal.

Best Overdrive by Far

By Christopher Donnells from Milford, CT on May 17, 2018 Music Background: 40 Years Experience

After there being no reviews or sound samples I took a gamble. It's Fulltone, how can it not be good. Well I must say this is one of the best overdrive pedals I've played. The Vintage setting is just like a TubeScreamer 808 but on steroids. You can definitely hear some cleans on top of that dirty sound. Great Texas Blues. And for the old school rock and roll the Comp Cut really does get you there. I have a TS-9, TS-10 (1980s) and a TS808 and I have to say, this could replace them all. I'm blown away by the versatility and the sound of it. Plus I got number 267 so that's pretty cool. Nice low number. LOL. Get one today.

Fulltone fulldrive 1

By Tom from Illinois on May 10, 2018 Music Background: Played for 40 years rock and church worship now.

Just received this pedal today and as everyone knows wasn't really any sound samples at least I couldn't find any. Was able to play with it for a while, will put it through its paces later, but this could be Fulltones best overdrive to date. The comp cut is jaw dropping. Massive gain on tap. Played it through my 50 watt plexi in comp cut mode, the only one I use, and yes it reminds me of my custom shop fulldrive2 that I sold years ago, stupid mistake that was. But anyway this one is more powerful and sounds and feels better to me. Clear sustaining lead tone with the drive at 3 and volume on noon. Wow! Just a quick review for some of you who are waiting.

The best, and the noisest...Sam as it ever was.

By Mike Roberts from Houston on January 14, 2019 Music Background: Pro

My third fulldrive...had an original II (#56!!!) For years. Bought newer production model a few years back hoping the line noise would go away - it didn't. Bought this one for the same reason. No luck. The pedal sounds great, I love it's ability to emulate tube breakup and tubescreamer tones...but it's almost useless for recording with the amount of noise it generates. Ive done all the tricks...various power supplies, battery only, buffers, pedal order, playing it by itself...no change.
