USB Rechargeable Lithium-ion 9V Power Supply for Fluence and Other Active Guitar/Bass Pickups

Whether you rock Fluences or EMGs, this universal battery pack from Fishman aims to replace the 9-volt batteries inside your guitar or bass. Wafer thin and smaller than a 2" square, the Fishman PRO-BPK-101 rechargeable lithium-ion power supply mounts easily inside many standard-sized instrument cavities. A quick 3-hour charge over USB, and the Fishman is primed to serve you weeks of play time (up to 200 hours; varies by load) without dropouts or brownouts. Its current capacity is comparable to that of a premium 9-volt alkaline battery, yet its size, weight, and convenience ensure you never find yourself at a gig or practice without juice. Live green and save green with the Fishman Fluence Universal Rechargeable Battery Pack — available now at Sweetwater.

Great Reliable Power Source

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Playing guitar since 1984…

This unit was retrofitted into the control cavity on a non-active pickup guitar. The controls are rear mounted and the upgrade was part of a Fishman Fluence Modern dual humbucker install. The pickups are surface mounted. Because of the push-pull requirement for voice 1-2 selections, space for the battery pack and charger controller board was tricky. The tone push-pull pot is taller than the volume pot and prevents the charger board from fitting above it. Took off 1/2 star because the instructions on 1/2" drill hole in control cover makes accuracy of the hole difficult. Otherwise, great device. Just checking out your guitar's space and limitations before going to rechargeable route.

Remote Charging

By Sweetwater Customer

These charging systems are great. Their good quality electronics. It's been quite a feat hiding all the parts without cutting the body of my 335, however it's worth the challenge. All that can be seen is the charging ports, as I have an 18V system.

Easy installation; stop wasting money on 9V batteries!

By Nicholas from Seattle, WA

Installed the battery pack along with a Fluence Modern set in a Warmoth Jazzmaster I built up. The circuit board part of the set measures 1.5 x 1.5 x 0.35 inches. The battery measures 2.2 x 1.43 x 0.5 inches. Both pieces *easily* fit in the Jazzmaster's cavity, near the switch. The adhesive included on them is strong enough to firmly hold them in place.

I used a step drill bit to drill a 0.5" hole for the USB port. If you have a single-ply pickguard, the LED light / USB port protrusion should be flush with the top. If you have a 3-ply pickguard, it will appear "sunk in" a little bit, but it's only noticeable when looking at it up close. I'm happy with the result.

Installation is easy, and it's satisfying to watch the LED turn on when you are charging it. Highly recommended.

Packed Battery

By Charles from CA

This is cool cuz it replaces batteries, which are damned expensive and clutter my Earth. Slim fit for installation in the wiring area or its own pocket. If your guitar guy knows how, this can be used with most active pickups.

Energy for Thought

By Wilfred J. from Davenport, IA
Music Background: I repair guitars.

I contacted Fishman and these have a 500 charging cycles rating. I did all the math and found out that this unit cost per hour is 1 cent and the battery cost over the same amount of hours comes out to 9/10s of a cent. So batteries cost less and 9-volt batteries will be around in ten years (Fishman rep estimated a 4 year life span for this unit for an average) and I think there is a great chance that these will no longer be in existence in ten years. Items like this come and go in a short time in the musical instrument electronics industry. Lithium-Ion batteries need to cycle often to maintain their projected life expectancy. Lithium-Ion batteries can't be left in a guitar that is stored away for long periods of time because they WILL catch fire if the battery voltage drops below the minimum voltage requirement. Neat for now but questionable for later possible developments due to the nature of these batteries.

Must have

By Will

If you are installing the active pickups this is a must have no more 9 volt batteries and can charge with the supplied cable, after you drill the hole in the back cover.

Very EZ & Very Handy!

By Sweetwater Customer

So, I am doing a custom Jazz Bass with EMG X Series 35TW-X-R and 35DC-X with the BTS preamp/EQ. Recommended to run @ 9v, no benefit to run 18v with this system. Just like the Fluence systems.

I decided to go all in and not have to change batteries, have a 9v go wrong and make a mess in my Bass nor have to shell $5.00 a pop to change over the life of the Bass. Also, ALWAYS operating at full power, because I will keep it charged!

I had just gone to the Eventide PowerMax with a USB power out for my pedal board. Now I can just run the charging cable off that when I finish for the day.

Nice item that's easy to install.

Ditch the 9V batteries

By Dave L. from Connecticut

A+ to Fishman on the rechargeable battery pack, easy to install, looks great, works perfectly. The fact that it also works with any active pickups is a huge bonus as I'm actually swapping out the Fishman Moderns that came in my guitar... (I know barbaric, but what can I say, I'm not sold yet and now my inner tone demons are battling it out over Duncans and EMGs).

My only two suggestions are rewiring the original 9V battery clip leads to a JST connector and leave it unplugged inside the cavity. It'd be a shame if just before a show you realize you forgot to charge the battery pack or if it fails for any reason, it's definitely better to have the original 9V leads as backup!

Second is buy yourself some dust covers for the micro USB.

Very cool - integrates with existing systems

By Adam from Boston
Music Background: College Educated Audio Engineer

I have a music man JPX 7 with piezo system. I added a set of Merrow Fluence pickups and added the rechargeable battery pack too, which was surprisingly easy;

I clipped the + and - wires of the existing battery supply in the guitar, and joined then soldered the red (+) wire to the red from both the fluence pickups, then soldered these to the + from the battery pack. Then took the existing black (-) wire and soldered this to the battery pack white wire (-), and finally soldered the ground (black on battery pack) to the back of my volume pot and voila!

Fishman does state that I'll get less playing time per charge as the piezo is wired in too, meaning 100-150hrs playing vs the 200-250 with just the Fluence pickups. We'll see though, as the piezo system is only turned on when the 3 way toggle on the guitar is engaged for piezo, and the regular alkaline battery never died this way
