Great Delay Pedal - TC Does It Again!

By Brad T. from Long Island, NY
Music Background: Intermediate

Overall a great delay pedal. Easy to use and plenty of options and sounds. I use it more of a delay than a looper. The delays sound excellent and authentic. The pedal is built well and very durable. TC always makes tough durable pedals. Overall a winner. This is a great pedal in my arsenal for my EVH setup. Ty at Sweetwater is always awesome as well! Sweetwater rocks!

A very solid, very capable, nice-n-small,very good sounding unit.

By Samuel M. from High Falls, NY
Music Background: Musician, composer, producer.

I have been very impressed with this little guy. It does so much of what my timeline can do, in a small and less power hungry package. The sounds are great. Even the annoying shimmery synthesizer sounding stuff that people like on their delays these days sounds good, so if you are in a worship band…

The only reasons I'm giving four stars instead of five are that it's slightly pricey, and it doesn't have MIDI. Well, I guess another reason is that it only has three user presets onboard.

But It has many sounds created by a huge user community, that you can download via their app. And you can create many more of your own presets and save them offline. But the ability to switch between many presets on the floor is priceless. And the ability to automate that via MIDI if you are using MIDI capable switcher, like my boss ES8, is even more priceless.

But I bought this for my small paddleboard. That one has no switcher, a fixed order of effects, and each one is activated by its own stomp button. In this context, it is a brilliant performer, with stellar sound.

Crazy Good

By RW from NC
Music Background: Playing Guitar Since 1979

I have owned many delay pedals, digital, analog & tape. Mostly pricey boutique brands (you know the names). I recently put together a small practice board and needed a do-it-all delay pedal to save space. The Flashback seemed the perfect size & it gets a lot of good reviews so I gave it a shot.
I got way more than I expected.
The Flashback has several high quality delays rivaling some pedals costing twice as much. I'm talking about studio quality sounds here. I'm already considering one of the bigger versions for my live board.
The Mash feature might be a neat gimmick for some people but I will never use it. Just not my kind of thing.
I did not expect much from the TonePrint app but I was pleasantly surprised. I found not one, but TWO excellent Chorus effects (without delay). To me, these settings are worth the price of the pedal by themselves as I love some good chorus AND, this being just a small practice board, I wasn't even considering buying a Chorus pedal for it so... Bonus!
To summarize: This thing is crazy good. And an insane bargain. TC Electronics has a permanent place on my radar from now on.

A whole new world for me

By Sweetwater Customer

Being new to delay and looping, this little device has become my best friend. I've found myself plugging it into everything that makes noise. It's primarily a practice tool for me for now. I'm enjoying using it as a fancy metronome mostly, but am looking forward to exploring all of its features soon.

Great Great Great Digital Delay!

By Tony from Gibson

TC Electronic's FlashBack II Delay is a great workhorse, jack-of-all-trades delay pedal. You get a plethora of settings based around classic delays, you get 3 settings that can be customized using TC Electronic's Tone Print technology, allowing you to use custom built settings from the pros or create your own! Did I mention, its also a LOOP pedal?! Love this peadal!

Ambiance and more

By Rick R. from MELBOURNE, FL
Music Background: Seasoned guitarist, live performer

I'm a big fan of digital delay to round out my sound and punch through the mix in just the right way. I play in worship where that expanded, "heavenly" kind of sound is just the ticket. So I lean hard on the Flashback's classic 2290 delay, medium wet with just a whisper of a 2nd feedback. Delicious and tone transparent. I've also used the Tone Print app to download tasty settings for an Edge-style plate reverb and a rockabilly slapback. And the footswitch Mash feature is a blast, turning delay into an expression! The Flashback 2 is a solid performer on all counts.

I use mine after pre-amp in the FX loop on my Catalyst 60, after MXR analog chorus and volume, just before the reverb. I find the 2290 is helpful to really open up the chorus when I use it.

I like tap tempo, and you do have the option through the software to trade in the Mash capability for tap. But I really like that Mash option for manipulation, so I appreciate that you can plug a tap tempo switch into the stereo input - I use a Source Audio switch which is tough and stage-worthy. If you go that route, you need to use a TRS cable and plug in only halfway into the Flashback (or get a specialized TRS cable).

Meh

By Mike
Music Background: Bedroom Rock God

The pedal works fine and has a ton of different sounds, but it just never sounds quite right - I've never used an analog delay pedal, but I suspect I'd be happier with analog. Something about the Flashback is a little too defined; it kind of stands out and apart from the underlying tone. It does the job, but I find the resulting tone distracting. It really pulls me out - makes playing inorganic. I can't knock it - it does exactly what it says it does, and it does it well. It just doesn't sound right to my ear.

Bought for the 2290 Setting

By Sweetwater Customer

As the title states, I bought this for the 2290 setting mainly, but also for being able to stack delays. I have a Boss DM-2W that I use for shorter delay times and then use the Flashback 2 for a second longer delay or with one of the modulated delays.
The 2290 however nails the delay used by U2. It's rhythmic, lush and chimey. The tape echo though digital is also very good for that warm trail on leads, as are the other modes included on the pedal. The only thing I haven't dove into yet are the loop functions included, already have a Ditto+ for that.

Looking for a very good delay pedal, this is certainly a top pick.

Don't buy TC ELECTRONICS

By Royce F. from Wyoming
Music Background: Hobby musician

I bought their Flashback nt too long ago. It began to sporadically not come on when using 9V battery. At the moment it works with the AC adapter. Their website is a bit confusing, and I did get an email off asking about servicing my box. I waiting... I went online and there are overwhelming posts of this problem and other TC Electronic effects boxes.

Power Packed Small Footprint Delay:

By Bill H. from Charlotte, NC.
Music Background: 55+ year guitar player & Reverbnation Artist

The TC Flashback Delay has a lot of features packed into a Boss pedal footprint at a reasonable price point. For me the stereo ins and outs, the tap tempo and the ability to load different delay programs are features that I like. You can see the many reviews and demos on YouTube and in print, so I'll just tell you why I wanted one.

I originally got the mini version of this pedal to run through the effects loop of one of my amps. It worked and sounded great. I just left it on the original tape delay that it shipped with. It's limitation is that it offers only one delay type at a time, which may work for some. This larger Flashback offers many more options with a flip of the program type switch. I run this in another one of my amps and I can also move it to my stereo pedalboard for some variation.

Bottom line, I love and use both of the Flashback pedals. The sound quality is high and the price for the features set is high. For reference, I have a Strymon El Cap, Volante and HX Stomp delays too.

Great Delay for the price

By Don
Music Background: Gigging Musician

This thing is built like a tank and the Toneprint software adds quite a bit of flexibility to it. The mash function is neat but honestly I don't use it too much. The only complaint I have is slight knob adjustments often seem to make huge changes. At any rate it's a solid Delay choice.

Versatile

By Brandon S.
Music Background: Guitar since 2003

Pedal has a lot of options and the mash foot switch effect is very cool. Unfortunately the mash effect does not abide by the level control setting and you will find yourself extra loud sometimes, which could be something you want I suppose.

I really like it.

TC Flashback II is the Winner!

By Steve P. from Milton, Massachusetts
Music Background: Retired from gigging, but enjoying it more.

I own two other delay pedals - there's nothing wrong with either of them, but they each produce only a good-sounding, straight forward, adjustable delay and repeats. After watching many demo videos - some were mainly strange sound effects I'd never use in a song - I picked the TC Flashback II, because All the delay types were usable - 11 different delay types, ranging from "basic" to "really unique" to "dreamy and beautiful," including a looper (nothing I'd call weird or strange). There are 3 spaces to create your own via "TonePrint" on-line, but TC gives you pre-programmed delays in those slots, which are pretty good. One demo referred to the Flashback II as "studio quality". That's a good description - the sounds are certainly "pristine." It's an inspiring pedal to have on your pedalboard. I can't imagine anyone not being thrilled having it.

I took off a half star, only because the delay type selection knob has no indents that seat it at the delay type - you must stop the indicator line on the selected delay visually. In spite of that, the Flashback II is a great delay pedal.

Super Fun to use!

Lots of different sounds . Bright clear delays. Only two draw backs are 1. Loop is only 40 seconds long. 2. You can't use any of the delay effects over your loop. Other than that I am very pleased and would recommend.

It does about every delay you want including a chorus type which i like better than my chorus pedal and even a flange. The tone prints are great and fun though the editor is a bit too complicated for my use. Great pedal and we'll built.

Great pedal! BUT!

By Jake
Music Background: Metal

So I actually REALLY LOVE this pedal! However, if you open the back panel, it has a dip switch, where you can select true, or buffered by pass, and kill dry on, or off. Pretty cool right?! Why would this be an issue then? I bought my pedal brand new, and the kill dry was ON! And there is no mention of the internal dip switch, on the box, or in the tiny "manual card"! Had I bought a demo model, I would have no right to complain, but buying it brand new, I would not expect them to have the kill dry on. I spent the first week with this pedal going crazy! However once I FINALLY found a video on youtube explaining the dip switch, it was a HUGE relief! And the panel is easily accessible. Was a very easy fix once I realized the issue. I just think the dip switch should be advertised in the packaging, and a new pedal should NOT come with the kill dry on. BUT ITS A GREAT PEDAL!!! You can get standard delay sounds, and weird sounds that make it sound like a crystal, is forming on your guitar strings. Put it at the end of your pedal chain, or in the FX loop, and it sounds great! I would of given a 5 star rating, if it were not for the issue.

Excellent Delay Pedal

By FJK1138 from USA
Music Background: Musician for over 40 years

I've had many delay pedals over the past 30+ years, and this is easily the best one I have ever used. The first setting "2290" is now my "go to" delay setting for leads, and probably will be what I use 99% of the time. I also really like the "Crystal" setting for its dreamy-like qualities, which is great for trippy clean chords and leads.

I could have saved a bit of money and got the Mini version of this pedal, but I would rather have the the extra delay options even though I probably won't use them that much. The MASH effect is something I have no real use for since I put my pedals on the amp and not the floor. I also don't really see myself getting into the TonePrint functions, but that may change over time.

The sound quality is clean and warm regardless of what delay type you use, and there are no annoying digital artifacts in the sound at all. The Depth knob has a pretty wide range of effect - you can definitely hear it, but it doesn't wash out your sound unless you turn it up past the noon position. Even when playing heavy leads you can still hear the notes with clarity yet the effect still comes through.

Great pedal - I'm totally happy with it, and I fully recommend it.

My Little giant!!

Needed this one to put on my pedal board, had little space available so this one would be perfect! I decided to use the tap tempo function, instead of the mash that is configured from the factory. TC Electronics Flashback II

By W R. from eastern Tennessee
Music Background: Been playing guitar since 12 years old and now I'm 70

I was so happy to receive my TC Electronics Flashback II pedal from Sweetwater. This is simply a great pedal to enhance my stereo sound. I use it in my effects loop of my Crate Power Block 150 watt amp that has stereo output. I use two sets of stereo speakers with 12 inch woofers for left and right channels and the stereo effect is outstanding. Especially the helicopter sounds that reverberate from left to right and another feature is the reverse effect. A great little pedal with a bunch of features and I love the tone print ability. I'm gonna pair it with my TC Electronics Hall of Fame II reverb unit when it arrives. I highly recommend this pedal for anyone who wants superb delay effects. Thanks to Cameron Green for all your help. You're a great customer representative.

All around great pedal

By John from Myrtle Beach, SC

Definitely the best and cleanest delay I've ever used with really true bypass. From classic analog to present digital if you can't find what your looking for in a delay pedal with this then you never will. Haven't delved much with the TonePrint because I'm happy dialing in my own sounds and looks to be a bit of a learning curve with it but there are plenty preprogrammed TonePrints you can use. I run mine through a Marshall Origin 20h effects loop.

4.5 Stars, only because the new Crystal delay isn't good.

By Alex from Dallas Texas
Music Background: Bassist and guitarist for over a decade

I love almost everything about this pedal except for the new Crystal delay tone, I personally think it's just downright terrible (it's SO harsh and bright, I cannot imagine using it with any gain either) but that's okay because this pedal is INCREDIBLE. Toneprints are so varied in both good and bad quality, but seriously every delay you want to try is basically here.

The beauty in this pedal is its incredible versatility, tap tempo, and basically unlimited delays. I don't use the mash feature anymore, I have no need for that.

Here are my favorite toneprints after at least 25 hours of research and testing:

DM3 Plus - This is a dark and very great solo analog delay that is low in modulation (very low) and has great settings for short delay times. The knob is backwards delay time wise, so be careful about that BUT because the delay is so short it's not a big issue. This is a great toneprint and is similar to the default analog delay but more suited for solos and slap back stuff.

Bright Analog Delay - The GREATEST toneprint. It's clean and clear yet it's analog so it's never in your way. That being said.. It can be a prominent delay if you want. The most versatile and best delay tone on this entire pedal is actually this toneprint. It's basically a deluxe memory man (no the other toneprints that emulate the DMM aren't great) and has incredible light modulation and is just PERFECT. If you download one toneprint... Make it the bright analog delay.

Buffered Space Echo - I needed one more tape and I wanted a brighter one and so far this is my favorite. I've tried the ep3 and others (there are some incredible tape delays in this) and the stock tape tone is phenomenal too in here but I do highly suggest this toneprint to try. Really it's all about that bright analog delay toneprint and the dm3 plus.

This delay punches way WAY above its price, buy it now.

I'm really impressed with this delay. Super clean Ora beautiful dirty tape echo. No sound difference between the guitar plugged straight in the amp or through the pedal. Flashback 2 delay pedal

By Ryan from Pennsylvania
Music Background: Recording/hobby

Awesome little pedal with a ton of great features I’ve been having a blast with this one

January 4, 2020

Tap Tempo now available!

By Martyn

I wanted a pedal that has stereo output, tap tempo and adjustable delay effects.

Up to a few months ago, the Flashback 2 Delay did not offer tap tempo (unless you forgo the stereo option and buy an additional switch pedal. But that turns this into a mono pedal). But now you can download the newest firmware (version 1.2) and have the option of tap tempo. However, adding the tap tempo means turning off the Mash feature. I can understand the one pedal switch can only do so much.

For me, having stereo input/output along with tap tempo is more important than the Mash feature. You would have to decide what is best for you. My guess is TC Electronic will come out with a new version of this pedal with all three: stereo, Mash, and tap tempo, but who knows when that will be. No Mash still sounds fantastic to me.

The stereo sounds mind-blowingly great! I use a mixer and have vocals and acoustic guitar going into this, and even panning the vocals and guitar to opposites sides, I get a really cool ping-pongy effect in the right and left channels chiming out very nicely. This is a powerful effect. Note: I found out to really get the pan sweep sound (ping pong) you have to set the subdivision toggle to the lowest position -- quarter + eighth note.

And, as others have mentioned, the Toneprint feature is what makes this baby truly yours - creating your own signature delay styles. This is custom all the way.

The features in this pedal are well worth the purchase. Of course, if I had more to spend, I would be looking at one of the Strymons or maybe the Eventide, but I'm not sure I could justify paying more than double for those. I don't think you can find a stereo delay with anything close to these features at this price point.

Very versatile and sweet sounding pedal

By Dan
Music Background: 30 plus years of guitar and pro sound

I really enjoy this delay pedal. So many sounds here, and the mash feature is pretty fun, although I think you could overdo it very easily on some of the delay types. But with the editor, i'm willing to bet you could dial in your mash expression to your specific needs. I love the modulation delay, and the reverse is really cool when using mash- no original notes, all reverse! Crystal is nice but maybe a little over the top, but I still have to tweak this stuff. Swell is cool on last tone print, but I use a volume pedal or the volume pot for that effect mostly. All in all, a very useful and musical delay. One of these days I'll use it in stereo and see what it's really capable of! Oh yeah- tap tempo available by disabling the stereo input and turning on tap in editor- extremely thoughtful! Thanks to my sales engineer Paul Rowan for his insight into the available delays, and being a pro at what he does.

Nice sounding pedal

This is a really good sounding pedal. My only complaint is that after a day of using it on battery the pedal stopped working. I had a DC power connector so the pedal works fine. I did not contact support as I am okay with the pedal working with the power supply over using the battery.

Very Nice Delay

By TJ B. from OR
Music Background: 30+ Year guitar player of various styles. Professional certificate in studio production from Berklee.

Overall I am digging this pedal. I'm kind of a delay freak and pretty much never play without at least some delay. I've owned a DD-3 for decades, various Digitech rack units. More recently have been using an ElevenRack so get all the nice delays available from that unit, but have decided to go back to more pedal-based rig, so picked up the Flashback 2 after doing some research. I almost picked up a Doctor from Wampler, but decided to have more options and really like the Mash concept. With the eleven I have been using an expression pedal to control delay level, so figured I could do something similar with the mash pedal.

Here are the Goods and Bads:

Goods:
*Very good quality delays across the board, no mater what flavor you are looking for.
*Transparent. It doesn't seem to mess with your original tone much and even at pretty high delay levels seems to let the original tone through pretty well (doesn't wash it out).
*Tone print option is very useful.
*Mash. Not quite as good as an expression pedal, but I love being able to add control various parameters in real time from the pedal.
*Tap tempo works really well with an MXR external tap pedal (some bad with this one. See below).
*I didn't think I'd like some of the more exotic delay flavors, but I love the crystal delay. Very cool textures to play over.
*Seems well built.

Bad:
*I thought I'd be more stoked about the integrated looper, but I'm not. I'm not super experience with using a looper, but found this a bit hard to use and I hate that I have to give up having delay if I am using the looper.
*I like the idea of turning the stereo in into the tap tempo input, but why does that have to sacrifice the stereo function. I love stereo delay and it seems like I should still be able to get that even with mono input. You set the pedal up for tap, it seems like it should just split the signal and allow ping-pong or other delay effects.
*The Mash is way cool and I love how you can assign it to various parameters in the Toneprint editor, but I would love the option of using an expression pedal as well. This may be too much to ask, but it would be nice.
*Toneprint Editor is really not user friendly. I ran into the same issues with my Quintessence pedal, but it is really not an intuitive application and their manual is pretty useless. This is something TC really should do some work on.

Anyway, if you are looking for a solid, useable and flexible delay pedal, this is a fantastic option.

Versitile with a lot of built in features

By Jon from Georgia
Music Background: Electric and Acoustic Guitar

I really like this pedal. I've got a Flashback Mini in series with the Flashback 2 and like both of them. The mini is less complicated to work with, but this Flashback 2 is so versatile, you can do a lot of things with it. It does not have a Tap Tempo feature built in, which I miss, but you can purchase an auxiliary tap pedal for entering tempos. That's why I gave it 4.5. The MASH switch is a cool feature, but I'm still learning how to best apply it as well as all the things this pedal can do. Good Pedal -- I like it!

Amazing pedal!

By Pedal G. from IL

As an owner of a Deluxe Memory Man and Stereo Memory Man with Hazarai this is an amazing pedal to join my collection. The analog sounds are as solid as their digital counterparts and it's really easy to dial up a sound that you like. I'm personally using the Tape setting (for now) but the other settings are cool too. The looping effect is easy to use and fun. Finally the Mash effect is a blast, it's one hell of a way to end and lead solo but stomping on the pedal and get a bunch of weird cool sounds. I can't get enough of it.

Best delay ever

By Joseph G.

Can't believe TC made this. Extreme quality and reliability. Plus, with toneprint feature you have endless versions of delays. Looper is another fantastic built in add. Its like multiple pedals in one.

Flashback delay

By Tom G. from California
Music Background: varied

I really love this little delay, I also have a Boss waza craft DM2, that I purchased from Sweetwater. The flashback artist presets that you can download through the tone print technology are truly amazing! There are also additional space on the pedal that you can save tone prints on. This pedal is built like a tank and is priced incredibly! Great job TC Electronics!

FLASHBACK 2...BECAUSE 2 IS BETTER THAN ONE!!

By Jim P. from Massachusetts
Music Background: 30+ years plucking away

The TC Flashback 2 delay is definitely one of the "best bangs for the buck". This pedal has just about every delay type at your disposal...with the tone print editor the possibilities become almost endless. Having so many choices was a bit scary at first.....I thought too much to tweak meant less time playing, more time messing with settings. However, I found the real beauty of this pedal is that its rather easy to dial in a great delay sound that fits just about any scenario...and you can beam many player inspired settings using the tone print app on your smartphone.. many, many options available on the fly, which is a plus. My only issues are the tap tempo requiring a separate switch, and the ever so slight loss of clarity when engaged. The crispness and/or clarity is pretty dang good, especially for the price. However, its not quite as crisp as a few more expensive units I currently own...which speaks volumes...if you want a super pristine, crystal clear delay... expect to spend a lot more. One feature that really caught my attention is the pressure sensitive "mash switch" which really stands out as a unique and inspiring function. Overall, a really great delay pedal, full of options, a few neat extras and total programmability using the tone print editor...totally worth more than what they sell for.

No Audio Tapping

By Ryan F. from Chelsea, OK
Music Background: Professional

Just a heads up, in my research of this pedal I found that TC Electronic stated that this version does not have audio tapping like the previous version. The only tap tempo option is by plugging a tap tempo pedal into the second (stereo) input jack. You will have to select this setup option through the TonePrint app. It will then set the outputs to dual mono.
