So glad I went the RME route!

By Bryan from New Mexico

When I updated my studio a little less than two years ago, I realized it was time to get a new interface. After doing some research, I knew I would purchase either a UA Apollo or this RME. The two things that tipped the scales in RME's favor were the TotalMixFX software and all of the reviews I read. It seemed like every person who bought an RME interface loved it.

Me too. I have officially consumed the Fireface Kool Aid.

Why?

*It's bulletproof. Works flawlessly EVERY time.
*No latency. Even via USB into my MAC vs. Thunderbolt there's never an issue.
*I like being able to control the flow in TotalMixFX. It is complex and takes a while to learn, but is awesome once proficient.
*The sound! I kid you not I can hear a definite improvement in the sound of my recordings/mixes. Mics, keyboards, guitars...everything sounds more clear, rich, and has a deeper fullness. Hard to quantify, easy to hear.

Finally, my friend, look at all of these reviews! Every one a 5-star with glowing reports filled with admiration. TBH, I've never used an Apollo, but regardless I plan to never leave RME.

Can't believe I waited this long

By Michael C. from LAS VEGAS, NV
Music Background: Studio Engineer, Production

RME was always "unobtainium" and out of my budget since the early 90s I never found myself in a position to add one. I recently found myself needing more I/O for my outboard mixing gear. I have a Clarette 8 and an additional ADA8200 but found I was needing more I/O in order to have everything connected to my DAW for ease of selection as a normaled insert.
unlike many people I am not in need of I/O for recording multiple instruments.
The RME was the perfect fit and I was able to utilize my current gear.
The total mix software took a minute to wrap my head around so I went into DAW mode initially. All of a sudden the light came on and Submix mode is basically like running monitors. Once I thought of it like that i had zero issues.
Definitely make sure you get the remote as well, its very handy.
Total Mix could easily allow me to record remotely on a laptop.
USB 2.0 ? Seriously the drivers everyone raves about are a fact! Zero issues, extremely backward compatible I would have never believed a USB 2.0 interface would work so flawlessly but it does.
RME just added an EQ which can be used for latency free room correction. Its 6 bands plus you could also utilize the other 3 bad EQ as well for a total of 9 bands.
There is no way to import any settings from something like SMAART or Sonorworks. As far as an actual mix it isnt as easy to set so I don't feel comfortable relying on it due to any phase inconsistencies. BUT I added a correction curve to my Windows profile to accommodate teh necessary curve for the monitors I use. I just went old school and ran Pink to calibrate and it definitely works as advertised.
The sound quality is fantastic as well.
I will echo what so many others have said " Can't belive I waited this long to get onboard with RME!

RME UFX II is Killer

By Dave C.

I had a MOTU 896HD for 15 years. Never a problem and liked it alot. Replaced that with the UFX II. I didn't realize how limited I was until I was rolling with the RME. After hearing the sound and seeing what it could do I decided to hook my monitors directly to the UFX and eliminate my board. I find the sound to be stunning, the thing is so well thought out. TotalMix is brilliant, the effects and controls are top-notch. Using USB2 eliminates obsolescence like the firewire in the MOTU. Recording is .... I'm still in shock how good it sounds.

I've definitely moved up the interface chain with this purchase and could not be happier. The IPAD connection is perfect and solves many logistic issues in my room. Easy to set up and works flawlessly. I trust German engineering. Sweetwater had it to me in a day. You can't ask for better....

Bought in 2019, pre pandemic, would buy again in a heartbeat

By david r. from Glens Falls, NY
Music Background: Producer, Songwriter, Avid Learning Center Teacher

There are few pieces of gear that I have ever owned where I am continually impressed. There are lots of interfaces out there, but the total mix software, and how well conceived the RME fireface UFX11 is has completely blown me away with the amount of problems it has solved. It sounds great, and there are tons of reviews of this unit to attest to that... HOWEVER....... I am an Avid Learning Center teacher, and in March of 2020 we had to get our classes online at a moments notice to complete our semester. EVERY SINGLE INTERFACE that EVERY OTHER PARTICIPANT used was unable to stream a mix without some kind of wonky workaround, or external mixer. Meanwhile, I'm sitting here with Totalmix and My UFX simply pressing the looback button and sending pretty much any source in my studio over the internet. I've had live full mixes with backing tracks streaming with absolutely no workarounds. I've streamed fitness classes from this facility where Im combining sources, even doing a usb backup of all audio in case theres trouble with zoom before audo even touches the computer. Ive handed other performers an ipad so they can control their own monitor mix. Total mix has complete, and extremely well though out flexibility to control this unit in every way that I can imagine. It would take AN AWFUL LOT to pull me away from rme! This is an absolute powerhouse

All Pro Device- and not Just as the Hardware for Your Studio

By Sacalait from South Louisiana
Music Background: Professional Guitarist/Producer/Arranger/Engineer

Drivers! It's one thing to make a great sounding, highly functional, for use day-in and day-out in a pro studio device like this. But backing up that device with the necessary computer drivers that work day-in and day-out for YEARS, and without costly glitches, is just as important!

Why did I start with drivers instead of sound quality? Because it's JUST as important to have the drivers that function the device as it is to have a device that could become a paperweight if the drivers don't work. I have a similar device from another company that sets this example- it sounds great, has beautiful mic preamps, but the drivers are outdated and it's pretty much a museum piece now RME has built high-end stuff from the beginning and they pay attention to the driver detail. I own a MultiFace (bought about 2007) that I was using up until very recently and it still WORKS and sounds as good as some of the new stuff!

As for sound quality, this thing is a pro as any gear you could possibly buy for a professional recording studio. The mic preamps are of transformer-less design and are beautifully transparent. I compliment those mic preamps with some transformer designs from A-Designs and Universal Audio. I couldn't be more satisfied with the results I get in my studio.

You can spend a lot less. But if you're serious about your business of recording and make a living doing it, you can't go wrong with an RME UFX.

The best of the best

By gabo from Michigan
Music Background: Drummer for The Moderns

I can't imagine what more you could want in an interface. This thing is a beast, rock solid, built like a tank, and with excellent manufacturer support.

I have had one of these for a number of years and recommended it to three other full time studio owners. All the other studios were struggling with poor software drivers, or IO problems, or general hardware failures from other products. All of them have said many times "why didn't I purchase this before?" Every single one of them is an RME convert.

I also have a Babyface and it is equally excellent. One nice thing is the BF and the UFX share the same drivers, so you can use your UFX in the studio and the BF for remote location recordings seamlessly.

It just doesn't get any better.

Fantastic Piece of Gear

By Sean W. from Fort Wayne, IN
Music Background: Home Studio

Even without the 16 ADAT IO, you can get a rehearsal space up and running with superb quality. The preamps and converters are excellent. I'm retiring some gear that was considered top of the line not too long ago. The headphone amps (both of them) have plenty of juice. If you need more than two headphone mixes, you can set up output pairs all day with additional headphone amps. The TotalMix engine is remarkably flexible. It truly is a route-anything-to-anything utility. You'll want to sit down and get used to it before you try anything major, but once you get how it works, it makes all the sense in the world. The EQ and Compression is entirely usable. The routing setup does a great job of integrating computer audio and interface inputs. I was disappointed with the quality of the reverb and I hope they address that in a REV at some point. Otherwise it's a grand slam. Don't overlook the recording feature. I assumed that it would be a clunky afterthought, but it is very intuitive. You just hit GO and it runs faithfully in the background. You can give your bandmates a stereo or multitrack (or both) recording of your rehearsal without ever touching a DAW. If you never needed to do any editing, you could darn near record and mix an entire song on this thing. We won't, but it's that usable. Pick up some additional 8 channel preamps with ADAT and this thing can accommodate a very large ensemble. It is legitimately 30 inputs with processing that you can choose whether or not to print (none of the digital options cannibalize other inputs). I've been using this unit for about 2 years now, and every time I wonder why they did a particular feature a particular way, I find out and end up even more impressed than I already was.

Very, Very, Nice!

By ET P. from Lafayette, IN
Music Background: Guitar Player, songwriter and recording hobbyist

I have been using this device for 6-7 months now in a home studio setting. It has a great sound that surpasses that of any other interface I have owned. Solid driver performance on a PC, I don't even think about driver performance or latency anymore. It has an impressive and flexible array of input and output options, and respectable clean preamps that sound just fine beside my UA, Grace and Warm Audio pres. Nothing negative to say about this hardware. There is a bit of a learning curve with the included Totalmix software. It has the flexibility and features needed to take full advantage of the hardware, and works well, but is a bit more complex than I personally need. If you need numerous different routing scenarios, or need to adjust monitoring setups regularly for the needs of a variety of sessions, it is very capable for these purposes. It is also possible to take a "set it and forget it" approach as I do. But it is also nice to know all of that power is there if needed.
I would purchase this again in a heartbeat. No buyers remorse here.

Ultimate Interface

By Scott M. from Metairie, LA
Music Background: Performing, Composing, Arranging, Recording, and Engineering for 40 years.

Ten minutes after setting this interface up, I became acutely aware of what I had been missing out on in my previous 20 years of recording. This interface sounds absolutely FANTASTIC. No need to bore you with the technical details as those are abundantly available online. Between my son and myself, we have been recording daily with this interface for about the last six months and like it more everyday. We keep asking ourselves why didn't we get an RME a long time ago? RME is a great company with excellent products, drivers, and tech support. We are so glad we bought this interface as it was an extremely ear-opening experience. No more bargain priced interfaces for me. If your music and recording is important to you, you owe it to yourself to use an interface that is designed and manufactured for excellence. The RME Fireface UFX II is just that interface. Also, kudos to my sales rep Jacob Stutzman who pointed me toward this unit.

Incredibly, buy it just for the DI...

By Hill-Bob from Irmo, SC
Music Background: Guitarist, songwriter, engineer, live performer.

I HATE DI's. UNTIL NOW. I HATE modeling software, modeling amps, modeling pedals. I am an old analog guy that can't stand the sound of solid state amps and cheap guitar pedals, even though I am a fan of nice thick overdrive and distortion all the way. I get a clean amp, know how to use a clean sound, and use very carefully researched analog pedals to get heavy overdrive and distortion for my live sound. I mic the amp in the studio.

The DI on this box appears to have an incredible dynamic range which which doesn't give that 'flubby' sound when attacking bass strings, and doesn't make the unprocessed sound an artificial mess. You don't need a lot of EQ, or need to hide the natural sound of the (electric) guitar behind a lot of processing - single coil, buckers, 90s. And you don't have to reduce the input signal so low there is no body - it's all still there.

Then, all of a sudden, some good amp sim plugins actually work. I am just listening and naturally playing. Free as a bird, happy as a clam. I am astonished that I might not actually mic the guitar on my next recording... !!!

WHAT HAVE I BEEN DOING?!?!?

By Grant F. from Grand Rapids, MI
Music Background: Composer

It's really hard to explain with words what I'm hearing through this interface right now.

It's.....absolutely......STUNNING. A stereo image like I've never experienced before. Crystal clear high and low end. Together making this device something I regret not purchasing EARLIER. My goodness I'm nervous to go back and listen to all of my past mixes through this.

Just buy it. I was debating for a few months, going around all the other name brand interfaces in the same price point (Apogee, Antelope, MOTU, etc.) and I kept coming back to the best reviews for RME and now I know why.

Cheers.

Absolute Perfection

By Dustin from Raleigh, NC
Music Background: Media Composer / Audio Producer

I have been working with the UFX II for about a month now and I continue to be blown away with the quality, flexibility, and opened capabilities of my workflow thanks to this unit. The conversion (coming from using a first gen Scarlett 18i20) felt like making the jump to light speed. Even listening to music has become more enjoyable! It's also great to be able to run audio through external processors (or use external mic pres) and skip the preamp stage going right into the conversion. Drivers are rock solid and Total Mix is an intuitive mix/routing software. I could easily see myself using this unit for the next decade or longer. I'm an RME fan and user for life now!
