Beautiful integration for FL Studio

By Sweetwater Customer from Lafayette, IN

For the price, this MIDI controller was perfect if you are using FL Studio as your DAW. Controls mirror the functions in the playlist windows. Would highly recommend to FL Studio users.

This works for me!

By Tori

I wanted keys that would work with FL Studio as soon as I plugged it in. This midi keyboard does exactly that. I still have yet to use it beyond the keys but it pairs great with the DAW and my Akai Fire. I have no complaints. The keyboard is solid and I feel is going to last me many years. Novation is stellar in quality. Hope to see more partnerships like this one!

What a terrible effort from Novation SMH

By Val T. from Burlington, WA
Music Background: 25 year musician/singer/songwriter 3 years producing

I bought the FLkey 37 for it's obvious connectivity to FL Studio, so I plugged it in to FL and enabled it as a MIDI device and find out that not only do the transport controls not work, but almost all of the controls on the entire thing either don't work at all or are mapped to the wrong controls altogether!
So I'm a pretty savvy FL user but I'm not immune to making mistakes. So I go online and watch a few videos about the FLkey and how to set it up, and sure enough everyone is saying the same thing. Plug it in and enable it, and it's supposed to work. But this one doesn't, except the keys, they weren't bad. But the absolute worst part of all was the awful pads, by far the worst I've ever played with. It's like trying to drum on hard plastic buttons that refuse to move no matter how hard you hit them. No one likes that Novation! I called my specialist James within 30 minutes of unboxing and returned it for an Akai Fire Grid.

Wow! Astute Quality

By Nive
Music Background: EDM/Alternative

The FL Key 37... Where to start? The fact that this is -finally- here, the first ever fully-integrated MIDI Keyboard for FL Studio is amazing. Every time I want to record a keyboard or key I use my FLK.
I will be going over the Pros, and Cons.

PROS:

Full integration for FL Studio on Windows
Hardy design encourages worry-free use
Sleek look
High Quality and Smooth rotary encoders
Extremely nice pads
Mod & Pitch wheels are very convenient
You can fully customize and assign different functions to the pads and rotary encoders

CONS:

No full integration for MacOS as of September 9th, 2022

-------

I would 10/10 recommend this for anyone who loves FL Studio.I have used my FLK on both MacOS and Windows, and although Windows is more integrated, I still use my FLK on Mac and love it.

Happy Producing,
Nive

Love my FLKEY37! Highly recommend it.

By Tori T.
Music Background: Songwriter

From the second I saw the release of this midi controller I knew I was gonna get my hands all over it. I am currently learning FL Studio and wanted something that was easy to plug and play. The FLKEY 37 is just that! You plug it in and can start getting your song ideas and production down right away. The actual keyboard itself is of great quality and I can't complain compared to what I had before (Nektar SE25). You seriously can't go wrong with this if you are a FL Studio junky. So just buy it!

Loved it

By Sweetwater Customer

Was confusing to setup the software at first but I just had to change the output for my midi in FL and I was all setup. Super useful for my music as well! Also delivered in perfect condition.

Great! But not revolutionary.

By Sweetwater Customer

**Pros:**
I like the pad menu a lot. With all the different modes you can select such as the sequencer, instrument, channel rack, there's a lot of tools that can help with efficiency. I especially like the sequencer mode, because you aren't limited to only 16 slots in the channel rack and can move either left or right to edit whatever section you need to edit. In the channel rack, while in sequencer mode, you are able to not only edit the velocity of selected notes, release and so on, but also change the note's value up or down the octaves or shift the note left or right (which is helpful for efficiency). I also like that you can change the panning, and volume of the mixer and channel rack inserts. The other modes such as having premade chords and being able to use certain plugins with the midi is a really nice addition too. The keys themselves are nice, but feel a bit flimsy. However, the keys do feel heavier (which i prefer heavier) than competitors at around the price point. The build quality is nice as well. It doesn't get scratched easily, and finger prints aren't that noticeable either meaning it would definitely last awhile without needing maintenance whatsoever. All the other knobs such as being able to record, putting the metronome on, score log, quantize, etc. and also having the octave +/- and scale/root option are all great features to have on a midi when using FL Studio. The pitch and modulation wheels are mostly on all midi keyboards now adays, so there was no surprise having them as a feature. The the texture of the wheels are nice and robust.

**Cons:**
The pads themselves really aren't the best for finger drumming and at times they don't really feel responsive. One of the things that really gave light to this, was the note repeat feature. It's really cool that you can change how fast the note repeats using the keys. However, when wanting to use other pads at the same time you are not able to. **For Example:** If I want to use a pad dedicated to a snare one shot, while also holding down a pad dedicated to my hi-hat on note repeat it will cause the snare pad to be very unresponsive at times and even delayed. The only way to get any responsive signal from the pad, *the one isn't being held down*, is by hitting the ends of the pad harder then intended (**and to add on to that:** there is also a slight delay that happens). The pads feel more like it's used to menu around the different modes of the FLKey 37 then actually using them for their intended purposes of what drum pads are made for.

Overall do I see the keys being revolutionary? Yes, but not for people who already have an established workflow and have been using FL Studio for numerous amount of years. Using my mouse and keyboard (and any external hardware), with FL Studio's HUD and majority of all the hotkeys stuck in my brain, is just as efficient. (I've been using FL Studio for around 6 years now, and have lots experience in Pro Tools as well). This caters more to people who need or don't already have an established work flow and could help get them to that level of efficiency. This is also represented with the added software that we are given, which the additional free stuff offered is a really nice bonus, catering more to people who are either brand new to audio production or haven't stepped foot in it for a long time. This isn't a EVERYONE MUST GET product in any way, but is still great for entry/intermediate level hardware.

Don't get me wrong, this is a good product with just some minor cons, being one of the only midi keyboards specifically made for FL Studio. This also gives FL Studio, within the music communities, more light to be represented as a more serious DAW for audio production, as well as future endeavors on creating bigger and better external hardware that can be plugged in and played immediately while using FL Studio without having to map out all your knobs or form a template beforehand.

DAW Controller, not very

By Gary B. from Braselton, GA
Music Background: Musician, Producer

Big Gripes:
The aftertouch applies only to the pads while they are in chord modes, not while they are in note modes.

The play/record and other transport buttons do not light up while they are active (you cannot tell what is happening in your daw unless you are looking at it, negating the point of these buttons)

The pads are NOT for finger drumming. They are for menu selection. You can trigger notes with them, but they are not very responsive and will not support a finger drummer with any speed. Nothing like Akai MPD pads.

Rotary knobs are not continuous. I didn't realize how obnoxious this would be until I started using it.

The key action is very flimsy feeling. I understand these are "synth" style keys and I am used to a keystation MK3. I wouldn't be bothered by this if the pads were usable.

Who this is for:
If you are making musical arrangements that do not have particularly intricate performances, and you want to spend less time setting up knob assignments in FL Studio, this works. The integration with the FL plug-ins works as advertised on their main plug-ins (Sytrus, Harmor, FPC, Etc)

Right now it's sitting on my floor. I am going to use it in the future for times when I have another musician who needs to control FL studio without sitting at the desk, or possibly as a remote instrument for when I am also playing another instrument (guitar or drums).

My goal was to consolidate a full keyboard and my Akai Fire into one controller and get desk space back. This device does not compare to the functionality of the others.

Sweetwater was/is awesome, and I was planning on returning it but decided to keep it due to shipping costs, and because the bundled software has some value to it. Especially addictive keys
