Yamaha FG830 Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar - Tobacco Brown Sunburst Reviews

6-string Acoustic Guitar with Sitka Spruce Top, Rosewood Back and Sides, Nato Neck, and Rosewood Fingerboard - Tobacco Brown Sunburst

There's even more to love about this FG830, Yamaha's recent installment in their hugely popular FG series of acoustic guitars. Back is the comfortable dreadnought body style and solid spruce top that players loved in the FG730, but new scalloped bracing gives this acoustic an even bigger low end and better projection for live and recording applications. The body's back and sides are made from rosewood to give the FG830 its powerful tone and warmth. And the satin-finished slim neck with rounded fret edges gives the Yamaha FG830 smooth playability.

Yamaha FG830 Guitar

By Sweetwater Customer from CO on September 19, 2023 Music Background: Beginner, beginner

As a beginner this guitar is perfect for me. Very reasonably priced, has good tone & stays in tune for days. In addition to being very happy with the guitar, Sweetwater's customer service is truly the best I've ever experienced from a retailer (and I'm old so I've delt with a lot of retailers). Jonathan Pass has provided awesome assistance with the purchase of 3 different instruments!

FG830 Tobacco Brown Sunburst

By Mike from Rome, GA on April 20, 2023

I now understand why these are the best selling acoustic guitars on the market! I had read a great deal of reviews on these guitars and everyone "raves" about them. It is all true. I just needed a good sounding acoustic to sit in the living room on a stand for me to pick up after work to relieve stress. So...when this guitar went on sale I ordered one. The fg830 sounds better than some of the higher acoustics that I own. It has a very rich, full, transparent sound. Buy one! You won't be disappointed. Also, Jake Braun is awesome!

Awesome

Great sounding guitar & great company all around!

Great deal

By Gavin from New York on March 31, 2023

This guitar plays wonderfully. The finish is beautiful. The sunburst and the dark woodgrain on the neck and body are gorgeous. Excellent product, especially at this price!

Dollar for Dollar,

By Bill from GA on March 30, 2023 Music Background: None. Just started trying, we will see how it goes

Dollar for Dollar, this is a wonderful guitar. I you are like me, a novice, ok mabye I give myself to much credit, I'm not that good yet lol. ...

Then this guitar is perfect. It is well made, consistent, and verst
itile. You can learn on it and play it for years.

You could certainly upgrade, but You certainly don't have to. The intonation on mine was pretty spot on. Someday if I learn to play better, perhaps I will have it proffesionally set up.

But it was not necessary with mine.

Of course you may just love guitars and have way to many. This one, while not considered high end. Is still worth having.

It is a well made fun guitar

Thanks Perry !!!

Thank you Sweetwater.

Excellent guitar for a guitar in this price range.
I'm taking time to give thanks to Zac T. and Joe Steinhart the guitar had an issue and they made it right.
I've been doing business with Sweetwater for almost 20 years and they've always provided excellent service.
Thank you.

Great Value for the Price!

By Michael DeBolt from Huntingtown, MD on March 15, 2023

I've been playing primarily electric guitar for over 40 years, and decided to purchase the FG830 a year ago to play around the house. I've owned a few acoustics through the years including a U.S. made Guild I purchased in the early 90's for $750… a very nice guitar. However, I gotta say this is truly a very high quality acoustic guitar at half the price 30 years later. The fit and finish is excellent, and the tone is beautiful. Playability was very good out of the box, but I did eventually file the high E and B string nut slots just a little to improve playability. I also need to thank my sales engineer Jordan Clohessy for the awesome personal assistance and advice, and sales follow up during the purchase this guitar!

Excellent Value

By Sweetwater Customer on November 11, 2022 Music Background: Hobby

I just purchased and received this guitar this week from Sweetwater. It's a truly excellent value. Great tone, playability, looks, fit and finish, and tuning stability for the money. I've owned a solid spruce/rosewood Martin in the past, which sounded superb, and this Yamaha FG830 approaches that level of sound quality in a much more affordable and very attractive package. I'm very pleased with this purchase. Goes to show that the Chinese can manufacture something worthwhile.

Far Exceeded any of my Expectations

By Matthew Schaeffer from Ellicott City, MD on October 4, 2022

This guitar plays better than my other high end acoustic by far. The construction is flawless. Its best feature is the neck and how easy it is to play. I don't know how they are able to offer this guitar at this price point. Unreal!

Fantastic guitar.

By Kurt Finch from BIGFORK, MN on April 29, 2021

Brilliant guitar. Well made, sounds excellent. Why blow money on an expensive Martin or Gibson when you get the same thing in this axe? As always, great service from Sweetwater. Off you're thinking about buying this

I BOUGHT A GREAT YAMAHA FG 830 FROM SWEETWATER.COM

By Michael Mosley from Grand Bay, Alabama on February 20, 2021 Music Background: I've been playing guitar nearly all my life. I've written songs, performed in public, and have enjoyed the heck out of playing guitars and being around music.

I was looking around on Ebay a couple years back and ran across a beautiful Tobacco Sunburst Yamaha FG 830. I liked what I saw, and ordered one. I was told by Sweetwater that the exact color I wanted wasn't in stock at that moment and so they special ordered one for me from their main supplier and after a little wait I received the box and when I got it open I was very surprised at how the guitar looked and when I tuned it up (Actually my buddy tuned it up for me) I couldn't believe how mellow and nice the tone was and how playable the action was on the neck. Apparently Sweetwater had a technician set it up as perfectly as it could be set up. I eventually sold the guitar to a friend (And regretted that I did that) but I know exactly what company I want to purchase my next guitar from and I plan on that guitar being another Yamaha FG 830 if at all possible. I'd give the FG 830 5 STARS OUT OF 5 for quality, sound, and playability. And I'd give Sweetwater Music a 5 out of 5 also for excellence for setting up guitars before sending them out to customers. HOORAY FOR SWEETWATER !!!

Exceeded Expectations

By Thomas Denny from Winston-Salem, NC on November 7, 2020 Music Background: Couch picker and tone chaser!!

Fingerpicker/Light Strummer here.... I am a well experienced owner of acoustics under $1000... Martins, Taylor, Blueridges, and other Yamahas. With that being said, this is a fantastic guitar. Craftsmanship is amazing. The tobacco sunburst is absolutely beautiful.
The sound far exceeds the price of the guitar. Nice boom on the low end and very articulate in the mids and high. The neck is smooth and fast. Zero complaints and really can't believe the price.
Repeat customer and Sweetwater is of course top notch in my book. Quick shipping and well packaged!!

Amazing!

By Garth from Payson, AZ on October 10, 2020

Having played guitar a little in college I decided to take it up once again and purchased the Yamaha FG830 to get me started. It was very well packaged and it arrived in perfect condition which, having purchased other items from Sweetwater, was not a surprise. What was a total surprise, however, was the incredible beauty of this guitar. The online photos did not do it justice! The tone and resonance match its physical beauty and the playability is simply amazing. I LOVE this guitar and am absolutely thrilled with this purchase!

Excellent Acoustic

By Kyle from Florida on March 14, 2020 Music Background: Hobbyists

Ordered a demo model. When it arrived I had to search and search for the scratches and crack in gelcoat that was in pictures. It could have passed for brand new to me but luckily it saved me money on an already incredible value. I cant compare it to anything high end but it plays like a dream. I bought it to mainly play bluegrass on and it's perfect. Plenty of bottom end. If it was stolen I'd buy another in a second.

For the Money; Excellent

By G Scott from SC on July 23, 2019 Music Background: Casual guitar player

I bought a Yamaha CJ 818 dreadnought around 1978 or 79 and it's been a great guitar. I decided I wanted to buy something newer, though still pleased with the ole 818. I spent weeks looking at reviews on youtube and forums and the Yamaha FG830 was mentioned often as an excellent guitar. I have no particular affection for Yamaha guitars and really wanted to try something different.
I looked at the usual highly desired Gibsons, Taylors and Martins but my level or proficiency does NOT justify the expense of a high end unit, yet !?!?!?

Again, looking at more reviews and trying to make a decision, I decided to call a dealer and get their opinion. This was when I had read some good reviews about Sweetwater and gave them a call. I talked to TJ and was impressed with his level of professionalism and did NOT think he was trying to oversale this or any other product. He also explained they had a satisfaction policy and if I didn't like the instrument, I could ship it back for just one way shipping. There was no restocking fees or hassles to return the unit. So, I could basically have it delivered to my door, play with it and ship it back for less than what I would spend taking my wife out to dinner at an affordable/cheap restaurant; what did I have to lose????

A few days later the FG 830 arrived and initially I was a little disappointed since it was lighter than my 818 and was not finished, cosmetically as nicely but those concerns soon evaporated once I started playing the 830. Especially the dynamics of chords like Em and G, just filled the room with rich tones and warmth Overall the balance was very good across all 6 strings and up and down the neck.
The action was very good and played about the same as my 818 which I always considered it to be very nice.
I have the 818 and 830 sitting in stands side by side but I usually grab the 830. Being lighter is nice and the warmth of those low chords is a tad better than my 818.

Funny thing is I paid about $300 ( almost $1200 today ) back in the late 70's for the 818 and about the same... for the 830, almost 40 years later.
I have heard this is the golden age of guitars where the precision vs cost is at an all time high. I believe this to be very true for guitars that cost under $1000... Above that, you are paying for brand name and cosmetics to a larger extent.

I try to play a little every night and maybe I will improve enough to justify the expense of a high dollar unit later but for now, i am VERY content with the 830 and highly recomend it to anyone who wants a great guitar to improve their skills before jumping into a high dollar purchase.

I also received a follow up email and phone call from TJ checking in with me to make sure I was pleased with the deal and my new instrument. That impressed me as much as the performance of the 830 and is the reason, I will recomend and make future purchases with Sweetwater and TJ.

GREAT GUITAR

By Joe W. from Alabama on March 25, 2019 Music Background: Novice

First things first....Sweetwater and their customer service dept was excellent. Received a phone call after ordering and email with photos and tracking shortly thereafter. Could not have asked for more. Now on to the guitar. I am a total novice who is replacing a beginner guitar I received for Christmas. I can not believe it is possible to buy something this nice for $... - I was totally blown away when I opened the box and started playing it. It sounds great! but more important to me is that it's a lot easier and forgiving than the guitar I started with. I have no idea what a really expensive guitar feels like or sounds like...but for my skill level this is perfect. I am 100% happy with the purchase and would highly recommend this guitar.

I love this guitar

By Chase from Tennessee on July 9, 2019 Music Background: Church Choir Strummer

Excellent sound and excellent setup. It"s got low action so I"m finally able to attempt bar chords! My only complaint is that it only has one strap peg so I had to tie a string to the head.

Noel

By Noel Layer from Galveston Texas on May 15, 2019

It"s a very nice guitar for the money! The sound is in my opinion right up there with Gibson and Martin, but not quite the playability. After playing it awhile I noticed it had a sharp second fret. Filed it a bit and all is fine! All in all it plays and sounds amazing! I bought it so I could play outdoors and not worry about it! Don't think I could have gotten as good or any better for the price! Sweetwater sales engineer suggested this guitar for what I was looking for and I couldn't be happier!

Great Guitar for the Price.

By Shawn from Alabama on August 10, 2022 Music Background: Sign Autographs for my Breathtaking Wife.

Was looking for an outside campfire guitar for the fall. Didn't want the J45 Standard or the Martin out in the night air. My original purchase was the Epiphone Hummingbird in Trans Ebony Finish. It arrived and what a awsome looking guitar. It sounded like a childs toy guitar from the children's section at Walmart. Flat, no tone what so ever. Immediately contacted Aaron, my sales engineer. Emailed me a shipping label, no problem. Packaged it back up. Went straight to Fed Ex it was on the way back. Contacted Aaron, to give the tracking number and paid for this Stunningly Attractive Yamaha FG 830. $ cheaper. But blows the Epiphone out of the Water in sound. and was flawless in construction. Yamaha my opinion only can't be beat. Reason for chancing a cheaper priced guitar than the one I'd just sent back is my very first stater guitar was a Yamaha FG 800 and for $ was a superb guitar. So, honestly. The 800 or 830 will take care of that for you. Posting pictures of the 830 and in one photo the Martin D15M Streetmaster, Epiphone Hummingbird, And Gibson J45 Standard. All the Epiphone was good for is photos. That was it.

A really nice guitar for the price and then some

By Scott D from Las Vegas on October 8, 2020 Music Background: i play for fun and hobby.

I don't often write reviews, but I thought I would for this purchase. The FG630 arrived in perfect condition with a nice set-up. I really appreciate Sweetwater's 55 point inspection, excellent packing (box in box), and great communication. This is the second purchase I've made, the other being a Gibson Les Paul Classic. I would recommend Sweetwater to anyone thinking of purchasing an instrument.

As far as the guitar goes, it's a nice value acoustic that punches above its weight. Nice fretboard and smooth frets and edges. I love the tobacco burst color. Good sound with nice bass, mids, and highs. Balanced. It's not a high end acoustic, but it is hard to put down and I have no regrets.

FedEx delivered the instrument and although I requested a signature for delivery, they just left it at the door. Fortunately, I now work from home and was around when FedEx rang the doorbell, but you might as well put a steal me sign on the sweetwater box.

Not to happy

By Tim derwin from Michigan on September 18, 2018 Music Background: Play by ear self taught

Just does not have a good sound for me. Hard to get any volume from it. Easy to play and brevtwo strings the first time playing. Very pretty. Going to keep it though as it costs to much to return. First time buying off line and probly the last. Customer service was top notch.
