Guild F-512 12-string Acoustic Guitar - Natural Reviews

12-String Acoustic Guitar with Spruce Top, Rosewood Back and Sides, Mahogany/Walnut Neck, and Ebony Fingerboard - Natural

Guild defined the 12-string sound with some of the most sought-after models ever produced. Having more strings shouldn’t lead to a muddier sound, and that's why legends like Tom Petty, David Gilmour, and Stevie Ray Vaughan all turned to Guild jumbo acoustics for their 12-strings needs. The F-512 is a faithful re-creation of those early California-built 12-string acoustics that defined a generation. Complete with a jumbo rosewood body, Sitka spruce top, and scalloped internal bracing, the F-512 delivers significantly more volume and clarity than a standard 12-string guitar. Focused bass, shimmering highs, and resonant mids with excellent response to player dynamics truly set this guitar a notch above the rest — if you’re after a US-made 12-string guitar with unbeatable clarity, the Guild F-512 is the instrument for you.

F512

By Jeff from Sacramento on August 8, 2023 Music Background: Most my life.

I bought one 2 years ago as my retirement present. It sounds better with some age. I played all the Martins and Taylors. It had the longest sustain, best tone and sparkle. Sold for $.but I had a so so trade in so just around 3K. I play every day. I let friends play it at gigs. Tom Petty had two, one red and one natural. The teck took great care when he set it up and did a fine job. I liked a 6 string, a Taylor parlor size all solid koa. Sweetness, warm and low action. When I came back to buy it another gent was buying that Taylor. But I can't stop playing the F512. It's a great guitar that only Guild could make. My 2nd 12 string by far the best.

I love this guitar. It's the best sounding axe I have ever played. Hard to put down.

I made a big mistake one day walking into a guitar sinner store and saw one of these hanging up. You can tell a lot about a guitar by just strumming it on the wall. Big mistake. I will always compare THAT sound to every other 12 I hear. Unfortunately, the price is out of my reach but if you can afford it, do it.

Dream Guitar

By Tim Timm from Sharpsburg, GA on July 1, 2022

I played this guitar a number of years ago and loved how it sounded and loved how easy it plays. I've wanted it ever since. I just unboxed mine this morning and it is as I remember, such a sweet guitar. The tone is so rich and full. The intonation is perfect all the way up the neck and it is so enjoyable to hold and play, especially for a 12-string. On top of all that, the F-512 is such a gorgeous guitar with the purfling and the inlays up the neck, and the gold tuners. It's well protected in a monster Guild hardshell humidified case. Best of all is how beautiful this guitar sounds. This is a dream guitar!

One Fabulous Guitar!

By Brian from Minnesota on June 20, 2020 Music Background: Guitarist for 55 years, songwriter, hobbyist.

I bought my Guild F-512 from Sweetwater in May of 2020. I also own a 1981 F-512. I can't get enough of that Guild 12-string magic! It's worth every penny. You'll never play a better 12-string.

F-512

By John D from Cape Cod, MA, USA on April 26, 2020 Music Background: semi-pro musician and songwriter

My favorite guitar, and i have owned more than 20, including Martins , Gibsons, and Fenders since 1965. My second favorite is my D-55. The inlays are beautiful and the quality is superb. I bought my F-512 last year. The playability is excellent. I have no problem playing bar chords or high up on the neck. The Guild sound is so rich. If you hit it hard it almost sounds like an electric, putting out some overdriven harmonics. Fingerpick it and it chimes beautifully. They put light gauge strings on it and i tune down to E flat per Roger McGuinn's advice. I love the jumbo body. Most others use a smaller dreadnought body. The large body balances nicely with the larger 12-string headstock. Excellent guitar. Sweetwater does a great job in delivering it.

It doesnt get any better than this

By Lynn Higgins from Alpine, Utah on September 24, 2019

I bought a Guild 212 XL in 1972 and loved it. A few years later I failed the intelligence test by trading it and another guitar I owned for a Martin D-28, which I love and still have to this day, but I have ever since wished I had my old Guild 212 back. Some years later I purchased a highly used Martin O12-35 in hopes of getting another great 12 string instrument but the sound, playability and tuners just weren't as good as my first love 212 XL.

For many years, due to the complexities of life, my playing was put on the shelf. In retirement I finally got back to playing and after a lot of study and contemplation I bought the guitar I hoped would give me back all the characteristics of my first guitar love.

I purchased the Guild F-512 and all my hopes and aspirations have been great exceeded. What an incredible instrument! The sound is incredible, the playability superb even for my old atrophied hands, and the stability of the design and the tuners is above reproach. The old adage of 12 sting guitar players spend half their time tuning and the other half of the time playing out of key has been shot down with this instrument. Even putting a capo on the neck requires almost no tuning touch up, unheard of with most other 12 string guitars.

The instrument if very pleasing to the eye, but I didn't buy it for its great looks, I bought it for the sound, and the 512 sound is more than I could have ever have hoped for. It exceeds my memory of my old 212 and kills my old Martin 12 string.

This guitar even makes this old hack sound good.

I bought this 10-12 years ago and it's the best 12-string I've ever played. unbelievable tone that just keeps getting better and it is fast and slick like an electric.
Try to find one if you are looking for a 12 you cannot do better.

Excellence In a 12 String!

By Dan from United States on April 28, 2012 Music Background: Been around

I own the F412 maple version. A bit brighter in sound than the rosewood F512 and what a piece of eye candy. For a 12 string, it's like playing air guitar, (you know, "like butter"). F412 or the F512, a choice you will never regret. Built to last. The best 12 string for the money, period. IMHO

Dream Come True

By Jeff Cooper from Minneapolis, Mn. on February 21, 2011 Music Background: Multi-Instrumentalist, Engineer, Band Member

I heard the 512 on many recordings before and always thought "what a great sounding guitar" but thought I would never get one so I classed it as a passing dream. Well, miracles do come true it seems. I finally heard a guy play one in a duo act live and was blown away by the sound and decided then and there I was going to try and save my $$$ for one. It was real hard but (now) I own that Sunburst F-512 and all I can say is, if you only own one 12 string acoustic in your life, make it this one. The crisp clear highs with the strong bottom end will bring tears of joy to your eyes. I normally plug into a board but even unplugged the sound is fantastic. The setup from the factory is very good with low clean action making it very easy to play. The sound projects clean weather in a large room or a studio. You can't go wrong with the F-512. The sunburst one I bought is beautiful.

First off let me say that working with Sweetwater was a breeze. I had been waiting for this guitar for months, and when i found out they had it in stock, I recieved it 4 DAYS!!! So thank you guys. The guitar itself is flawless. The sound is loud and colorful. The finish is beautiful, and woods used are of the highest grade. This guitar was worth the wait and the money, and again thank you SWEETWATER!!

By H.J. "Duke" Beilby from Indianapolis are, Indiana U.S.A on January 18, 2010 Music Background: Maker, repairman ,part-time song writter, musician,

Had all or played all Top N-ames and "Private Makers". From proto-types to new or used listed inventories. The ones that consistantly blow em all away are the Guild 12's especialy the 512 Jumbo Rosewood models. The flexiability of this instrument is amazing. From ballads to explosive whaling, they sound....Guilds like afull orchestra. Sweet, responsive, absolutly the best!

Indescribable!

By Addison Slabaugh from Bourbon, IN USA on July 10, 2008 Music Background: Hobbyist/Collector

Although this guitar may seem pricey, it's worth EVERY penny you will pay. Not only are the different woods that construct this guitar great for tone, but they also improve with age allowing your guitar to sound more full as it gets older, ultimately making this purchase an investment that will grow. After owning and playing this beauty for months, I would recommend EVERYONE who can afford the F-512 to buy it as a flawless guitar and an increasing investment.

a rosewood guild 12 string is hard to beat

By dennis newberg from monticello, ny on November 16, 2009 Music Background: giging musician

this is a fantastic 12 string. the tone cannot be beat and i have owned several 12s including a rosewood martin. its a good idea to get this with a factory installed pickup if you plan to play out. i can tell you that guitars of this quality greatly increase in value as the years go buy so its really an investment that you get to enjoy.
