Squier Paranormal Esquire Deluxe Solidbody Electric Guitar - Mocha Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Okoume Body, Maple Neck, Maple Fingerboard, and 1 Humbucking Pickup - Mocha

Representing the median between an early ’50s Esquire and a ’70s-era Telecaster Deluxe, the Squier Paranormal Esquire Deluxe is a no-nonsense solidbody with an aggressive humbucking edge. From the classic big-pickguard-equipped okoume Tele body to the 6-saddle hardtail bridge, this guitar is clearly inspired by the Tele Deluxes of the ’70s, but with a utilitarian twist: a single bridge-position Fender-designed Wide Range humbucking pickup. It’s a fierce set of specs that excels in all manner of loud, heavy 6-string applications. However, Sweetwater guitarists find the distinctive 3-position rotary knob grants the Paranormal Esquire Deluxe far greater flexibility than your typical 1-pickup instrument, taking you from all-out humbucking firepower to subtle split-coil sonics. A comfortable maple-on-maple “C” profile neck completes the Paranormal Esquire Deluxe with top-class playability that’s all but guaranteed to inspire fervent fretwork.

Great Guitar

By Tom N. from Wyoming
Music Background: Just a weekender…

This is a great guitar for a beginner or even a step up. It was well set-up out of the box and easy to play. It is also a great basic platform for customization, which is why I bought the guitar. That said, it's great as it is and I am not in a big hurry to jump into changing everything.

Great guitar

By Mitch
Music Background: Been playing guitar for over 20 years

Guitar is great, neck feels good and the stock squier pickup sounds good. Also an amazing guitar for modding if you choose. Always a great experience dealing sweetwater, especially my rep Mitch Dazey.

Much better than expected!!

By Tom from Tennessee
Music Background: playing for 50 years

I was an active player back in the 1970s, main guitar was a Telecaster. I miss it so I purchased this one. It arrived well packed and on time. I was extremely impressed by the fit and finish and just the overall quality of it. Squire has come a long way! Tone and versatility are great as well. You cant do better for the money.

This Guitar is a Beast!

Very very happy with the bright and aggressive sound of this guitar. It's my first guitar with a wide range design humbucker and it's fantastic.

A Winner!

By Steve J. from Harrisburg/Philadelphia
Music Background: Decades of gigs.

This guitar has such a unique voice. First off, it's a Squire, so forget about dealing with fret buzz. The tuners are a bit loose but as mentioned in another review on this page, they do stay in tune for long periods of time. The neck feels thin to me, like the Tele Custom I got back in 1976. The frets are tall, so it's easy to bend strings. I sanded the finger board and back of the neck just enough to remove the gloss, now there's nothing holding back from even easier bending. The pickup, the heart of this guitar which makes it special, does indeed have three different sounds. First, the single coil is the inside coil, the one closest to the neck, and is placed just perfectly for a sound in between a Strat middle pickup and a Strat middle & bridge pickup. This is also fairly weak but crystal clear and I use a MXR Micro Amp with that. The full humbucker is thicker, but with plenty of clarity. I roll the tone down halfway for a Santana type sound along with a green box. Then, the direct to output selection bypasses the volume and tone controls for a slight boost with extra sharpness. The guitar is considered lightweight and has a comfort belly cut. I've bought and sold hundreds of guitars and this one is a delight, off the beaten path so to speak. It's my current favorite and goes to all my gigs. Long gone is the Squire stigma ever since I bought one of their first Strats made in the 80s.

Esquire of excellent value

By Randall R. from Metairie, LA

I've been having a great time playing this new guitar! I love the tones it produces. Only getting 4 stars because the movement of some of the tuners are inconsistent compared to the other tuners. However, guitar does tune and holds that tuning.

Such a fun guitar

By Derek

In my 35 years of guitar playing, I had never even thought of buying anything from fender or squier. Based solely off the looks of this guitar I figured it's cheap enough to dip my toes into tele life. This guitar feels great to me. The neck is not what I remembered squier selling 20 years ago. I love this guitar so much that I had to grab the black one and I had the chance to grab the limited edition blue sparkle with white pickguard from fender so I grabbed that too. I'm a sucker for a 1 pickup guitar, plus the 70's headstock makes it a no brainer for me. The pickup is very nice to my ears.

Wonderful Guitar!

By J. B. from Kentucky
Music Background: Been playing for 50 years

I really like this guitar! It's a beauty to look at and the tonal range is great. I have never played a wide range pickup guitar before and though these are not made exactly like the originals, they do have a great tone of their own. I think the neck is a little thicker than the CV series which is still very good. I would have preferred a vintage tint on the maple neck but it plays well and it needs no extra work. If there's a better value guitar for the money I don't know about them! Love Sweetwaters customer service as well.

Can't stop playing it

By Tim from Tennessee
Music Background: Guitar player and songwriter

I was looking for a Fender guitar with a humbucker and I've always wanted an Esquire. SO, I took a chance on this Esquire Deluxe and I'll be damned if it isn't my go-to guitar now. I pick it up over just about everything in my collection. I love the control bypass option. It really adds an edge, and playing this straight into a dimed Fender Champ makes me feel like I'm in the Heartbreakers. Amazing guitar. Might buy two before they get replaced by something else. 10/10.

A Great Cheap Guitar.

By mark
Music Background: Retired Musician

It is a brilliant concept a one wide range style single pickup guitar that gives you 3 different tones with the flick of switch. It sounds good. I contacted Fender they told me the Squire pickup is very similar to their $ CuNiFe pickup, but it is not the same pickup. Now the Fender Mexico wide range pickup and the Squire is the same. They look the part but they more like a PAF despite how they look. I had Guitar Center install a CuNiFe pickup, a Fender 1 meg pot and Fender TBX pot. I like the upgrades, but the TBX pot negates the Esquire affect. It is now a one pickup Telecaster Deluxe. If anybody wants to upgrade their Esquire Deluxe just do the pickup and volume pot.
