Speaker latches very poor design.

By James C. from Florida
Music Background: Vast

Spend $ on an escort 5000 to have the speaker latches unlatch when you're rolling the thing around. Speakers all scratched up and look beat up because they fall off the main unit. Peavey should've known of this defect before these units left the factory. Very poor engineering on speaker latches.

Best in class but still has shortcomings

By David from NW Missouri
Music Background: Singer-Songwriter

I consider the Peavey among the best in the portable PA systems, especially in this price range, because they have offer more features than other brands [which shall not be mentioned by name]--those features being: 3-band EQ on channels instead of 2-band EQs, 7-band master graphic EQ instead of 2-band or none, included speaker stands [yes I know they aren't the most substantial, but if one is not using the system in an environment where they will be jostled, they should be fine], wheels on the unit. Yes, I know it is still fairly heavy and has to be lifted in and out of one's vehicle, but It is still lighter than the Passport series made by another manufacturer and that thing has no wheels at all--as well as no EQ at all to speak of.
Now to look at the shortcomings:
(1) no gain controls on each channel. With some mics you may actually have to pre-amp them to get a good signal. As it was, I am using some AKG P3S mics and had to set the levels around seven to make it heard.
(2) No pan/balance control. If one is going to offer a stereo amp on this, balance/panning controls on each channel would help users optimize that feature.
(3) No monitor level controls on each channel. What is the point of having a monitor out if one cannot adjust the levels between each channel.
(4) Knobs instead of faders for setting levels on each channel. Seventeen years ago, I purchased one of the first generation PA systems in this series, the Escort 2000. It had three of the four features this unit lacks: mic pre-amps with gain controls, pan/balance controls, and faders instead of knobs. Peavey needs to go back to that layout and incorporate those features back into the current generation of Escort PA systems.
(5) Knobs instead of faders to set master and monitor levels and balance. Again, the Escort 2000 used two faders [L/R] for setting the master levels and balancing them.
(6) The Escort 2000 came with two microphones. This comes with none.
(7) The speaker cables included with the system are not well shielded and prone to be noisy. So I had to purchased some Planet Wave speaker cables and use those instead.
I had contacted Peavey on the issue of the mixer section's layout and was told that they do not think the mixer section has enough room for the retro mods suggested. I told them if Behringer can offer those features in a non-powered mixer like the Xenyx 1002B which has a smaller footprint than the mixer section on this, it should be a piece of cake for Peavey's engineers to revisit the 2000 to reconfigure the layout for the current generation of Escort PA systems. Time has yet to tell if Peavey will actually listen to users who have used the equipment in the field, but I'm not holding my breath.
So, while I can give this a "Really Good" 3-star rating, I cannot, in fairness give it anything higher because it just doesn't have the wow factor I think a 4- or 5-star rating should have.

Peavey Escort 5000

By michael from Tracy, Ca.

Everything about it is great except that even with the wheels I still have to lift this to get it into our van. It is very heavy and awkward to lift. Individual parts are lightweight but as an assembly it is too heavy, especially when the artist is also the roadie.

Peavey Escort 5000

By Kelly from Little Rock
Music Background: Professional musician for 30 years

I picked up the Peavey Escort 5000, along with a nice stand and the Behringer 18' 500 watt active sub, to use for small band / karaoke. Frank was great and I received everything on time and it all worked great out of the box. Looking forward to doing more business with Sweetwater. Great experience. Everything worked as advertised. I was really impressed with the speakers, very light but great sound.

Surprisingly powerful!

By Ladyjazz from Detroit, MI USA
Music Background: Pro musician, arranger/producer, performer

Using this unit for several weeks and are very pleased with the surprisingy great sound and power of such a compact and well-designed unit. The lightweight speakers are a real pleasure to handle and the mixer features are pretty awesome. Completely adequate for smaller gigs. The only negatives are 1} stands could have higher height capacity, they're a lttle short 2} A case latch broke right away but company sent replacements immediately. Would definitely recommend this Escort system for appropriate performing situations.
