Wampler EQuator Advanced Guitar Equalization Pedal Reviews
Every guitar, pedal, and speaker that comprises your signal chain has a different character. And it's for this reason that traditional multiband graphic EQs often fall short. The Wampler EQuator EQ pedal, with its fixed Bass and Treble controls and fully sweepable 2-band semi-parametric midrange, gives you control where you need it and convenience where you don't. The EQuator's discrete analog circuitry imparts a sweet, airy presence and three-dimensional depth to your signal. Its 25dB of boost or cut quickly compensate for deficiencies in arrangements or equipment. You can even use the EQuator as a clean boost to drive your amp harder. Whether in front of your amp or in your effects loop, you'll find the tonal control you're after without the rigmarole in the Wampler EQuator EQ pedal from Sweetwater.

Love this pedal
It's what you need to get the proper tone for a guitar! Great quality and low noise
Love it!!
I have always used Graphic-style EQ pedals on my boards. I play electric guitar Praise and Worship and have always struggled with losing tone at low volumes. After some research I decided to try the Equator to go "parametric" and hoped I could get better tone at low volumes. WOW! I can now control overall volume from the board using the Equator volume control and leave my amp settings alone. I can lower the volume and it doesn't get muddy and the amp sound remains nice, clean and warm. It didn't take long to dial it in either. This is the last pedal in my chain. It provides needed tone(s) to glue it all together and not having to touch the amp at all during service is quite a stress reliever. A great pedal!!
Brian strikes again
This EQ took me several months to get because of pandemic. It was sooo worth the wait! The mid adjustments are insane and it works like a boost as well. Always on and the end of the chain. I love Wampler pedals.
Great tone enhancer
Does a very good job of "opening up" the sound beyond what a (5 Band) Equalizer can do.
Make Your Rig Work for You
longtime player, over 40 years. This EQ is entirely built around the tweaking frequencies that bring out the best of any combination of guitar/pups and amp. I am now able to make any guitar work with any amp. Now you are able dial in that fuzz and/or distortion pedal that never really worked with a specific guitar/amp. This may be the best pedal I've ever bought. It certainly is my go tone shaping tool. It will bring out the best in all your other gear. Hats off to Brian Wampler and thank you Sweetwater.
Bought it twice
There are so many good things about this pedal. The parametric mid labeling is great. 2.2hz/classic scoop. 723/tube screamer bump. Basically I use this in the loop as an attenuator adding a little scoop/bump to taste. Running this at 18v I've never run out of headroom even when pushing a pretty hot signal through it. Quiet and clean. I bought this early on in my tone search, sold it, and now #2. It was like plugging in sn old friend. Once you figure this out with the different mid Qs you won't live without it. 5 enthusiastic stars.
Shout out to my sales engineer Grant Embry for making it all happen. Cheers!
Amazing pedal
After some tweaking, I now have my Fender Stratocaster screaming! It really punches through the mix now, which is something I've been looking for. The battery function was a little confusing, but it works great. I highly recommend this pedal.
A Must Have!
I've been playing electric guitar for 33 years. I just added this Wampler EQuator to my pedalboard and am very, very happy. You think you don't need an EQ but once you try one you can't believe what you've been missing. Amazing! This particular EQ is super intuitive and very easy to use. Don't hesitate. Buy this EQuator!
Great Pedal
Great pedal just be aware that different pickups respond differently to this pedal in my case different basses, guitar may not be as affected. The reason I bought this pedal was how much control you have over the mids. The mid frequency knobs work backwards, you turn counterclockwise to raise the mids. Turn them to the right and you have your scooped standard V eq shape.
SWEETEN UP YOUR TONE
I play mostly Telecaster type guitars, but have a few humbucker equipped axes and a couple Strats. Once you get on to the way the two mid controls work, you can easily dial up the perfect tone for each guitar. In fact, you will find that once you figure out the sweet spot for your guitar/pedalboard/amp combination, only small tweeks of the knobs are required to change from one guitar to another. Some have said that this pedal is noisy. Possibly, if you are trying to use extreme settings and use it as a volume boost, this could be true. I only bring enough volume back to get back to unity gain when certain frequencies have been rolled back and have not experienced any noise problem. The bass and treble controls are a no brainer. Think of the treble control as a presence knob, as it's centered at 7k hz. I love this pedal and leave it on all the time!!
Great Tool For Stage Or Studio
I have used this in the front of my amps and the effects loop. This pedal gives any amp more/different character. It's an excellent device for cutting through a mix live. I have used it for bass and guitar. I have used it in recording sessions as a coloring tool for amps. Wampler delivers! Shout out to my rep Cliff Hackleman. He always checks in and has recommended good stuff.
Excellent
I have this in the loop of my 51506L6 combo and it just makes this amp so versatile. The 5150 eq is voiced for a certain sound but this just lets you go from bright clean breakup to absolute pummel. I like all kinds of music. Does 80s high gain hair to detuned madness at the twist of a knob. Excellent eq hand made in the USA. Sold.
Thanks Grant.
Perfect Tone Sculptor
I play in a modern metal band and finding that perfect tone is key to how it feels to play my music. I love the tone I already have with the overdrive pedal I have and the high gain amp I have, but there was just barely something missing that I just wasn't able to dial in. I knew I would need an EQ pedal so the search began. I shopped around for a while and I've previously owned a 10-band EQ from another brand, but wanted something more practical for guitar. Enter the Wampler EQuater. With the static bass (130Hz) and Treble (7KHz) shelves and 2 variable Mid Frequency knobs, 1 with a wide Q and the 2nd with a narrow Q, I was easily and quickly able to dial in that sweet, sweet tone I had been searching for! Incredibly intuitive pedal with guitar-specific frequencies marked on the 2 Mid knobs, this pedal is exactly what I needed. I'm super glad I picked this baby up!
Powerful, clean EQ
This new offering from Brian Wampler is everything you'd expect it to be: High quality, powerful and easy to dial in a perfect tone. It's quiet and has plenty of headroom. I'd say this is the new go-to EQ pedal for guitar, bass or any other electric instrument.
Nice EQ Pedal
I really like this pedal and I can get some nice sounds from it. I kind of just play with it and say that sounds nice. I'm still learning how the mid knobs react when tweaked, but this is a nice pedal.
Great for Bass
I use it to balance my tone from my basses then into a bass compressor.
(I use 5-strings which can be boomy on the B string)
It fattens the tone and sounds so smooth.
Worth every penny and than some.
Thank you, Wampler.
WMD made an eq like this a while back, and it was tough to find (when I was in the market) at a price I was willing to pay.
Realized that I only wanted para for the mids, and this delivers.
In addition, great quality output "boost", as you'd expect from Wampler.
I love mine!
Equator
This EQ pedal is just what I was looking for. I have been better able to dial-in the sounds I'm looking for even with just two bands of quasi-parametric EQ, as the shelving Treble and Bass controls do a good job at both ends of the frequency spectrum. The only thing I would ask for is two more knobs to allow for variable control of the Q of each band. However, given the cost and real estate required for more control, I imagine that the designers of effects pedals are required to focus on keeping costs down and operation simple.
Great Sound, But Noisy
The background to me purchasing the EQuator was the need to cut through the mix with one particular guitar which has a natural lack of lower mids that can't be dialed in by swapping pickups or changing potentiometer values.
The EQuator appealed to me because of its small size and parametric midrange EQs. For what I'm trying to accomplish, the pedal works perfectly. It also has true bypass switching with a soft switch, which is nice. Also due to the true bypass switching, it doesn't alter your sound when it's off.
When the pedal is on, the tone at neutral settings is about as transparent as it possibly could be. As Brian Wampler mentioned in his video walkthrough of the pedal, due to the tolerances of potentiometers, 12-o'clock is not necessarily the neutral point.
There's only one problem: it's noisy. I've tried it with both a 1-Spot by itself and with an isolated 9V output from a Voodoo Lab Mondo, and in both cases, it introduced a noticeable amount of white noise to the signal, especially with settings involving more than light distortion. I was able to get around this issue by putting a noise gate after the EQuator on my pedalboard and/or by using the noise gate built into my Kemper Profiler. However, if I didn't have those options at my disposal, I'd have to return the pedal.
Nice while it lasted
So the pedal is sweet. I had it in my effects loop and its by far the best eq pedal ive ever had and ive had many. BUT 3 weeks in I'm using it to push my amps power section some, had the volume on the pedal around the 1 o'clock position which brian wampler himself said is ok to do and can be used like an overdrive. So as im playing through it, a semi-high pitch buzz started coming from the equaters volume pot. As i turned the volume knob it sounded like a synth knob now with a very loud constant kazoo sounding buzz in the signal. Just returned it. If you use it, dont use it like an overdrive. Dont take the volume pot past noon, or do so at your own peril.
Surprisingly Noisy
Volume turned more than a quarter of the way up produced an enormous amount of hiss. Especially evident when compared side by side with a pedal like the JHS Clover or Earthquaker Tone Job. Choice of frequency on the treble knob seemed odd too. Take a pass on this one.
