Toontrack EZdrummer 3 Virtual Drum Software - Upgrade from Any Previous Version Reviews

Virtual Drum Software with Step Sequencer, Bandmate, Advanced Play-style Editing and Humanization, 7 Drum Kits, and Presets - macOS/Windows, Standalone, AAX Native, AU, VST3

If you thought EZdrummer 2 was mind blowing, wait until you get a load of Toontrack EZdrummer 3. The third time is definitely the charm: this virtual drum software takes the concept of "EZ" drum production to an entirely new level. Finding grooves is effortless with this virtual drum software, thanks to its gigantic, wide-ranging MIDI library. EZdrummer 3's browser has been given a significant makeover. For starters, its Tap2Find function has been fortified with a built-in step sequencer. You can also isolate specific elements from different grooves and combine them to create new ones. Creating custom-tailored grooves is a walk in the park with EZdrummer 3. Feed the virtual instrument an instrument track from your song, and its Bandmate feature will automatically generate a realistic drum performance that matches its feel and groove. EZdrummer 3 also makes editing grooves an effortless endeavor, thanks to overhauled Power Hand features, a turbocharged Grid Editor, and automatic humanization with varied articulations and more. And to top it off, EZD3 comes with a sound library of seven drum kits — plus extras — all captured at the legendary Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin, Germany, by Grammy-winning recording/mixing engineer Michael Ilbert. EZdrummer 3 also boasts a massive cache of mix-ready presets, along with a fully scalable and resizable graphical user interface.

EZ Drummer 3

By Sweetwater Customer from FL

Usually when you upgrade to a program another level higher you are faced with doubts about how hard this transition is going to be. Let me just say that the good folks at toon tracks and Sweetwater are there to take you through it all and make it as easy as it could be. I am happy to say that with a little guidance from the good folks at Sweetwater (thank you Alex) and toon tracks I have put together 3 original tunes using this program. I can honestly say that in the short time I have had the program I have already surpassed what I was able to do with EZ Drummer 2. Thanks Sweetwater

tRSp

By Rob S. from Bluefield, WV
Music Background: 32 plus years of writing, playing, recording, producing, etc.

I was a little disappointed at the overall upgrade from EZ drummer 2. However, the new kits ate on point and the mixing tools are very user friendly.

Redundant

By Jeffrey J. from CO
Music Background: Still learning

This is a good drum sequencer.

However, there is tremendous redundancy between this and Superior Drummer 3.

EZ Drummer and Superior Drummer should have been the same program from the beginning.

Despite the absurd redundancy, there is a stunning lack of compatibility between this program and SD3.

What should have been ONE great drum programmer from the Get-Go has inexplicably been split into two redundant but bizarrely incompatible versions.

Astonishing design failure.

Great sounds and features, latency issues with Roland V-Drums

By Rick from Texas

From the standpoint of a stand-alone drum program or using as a plug-in with your DAW, this is a five-star product. Top shelf sounds, great interface, powerful song development tools, relatively easy to use. I saw so many commercials showing quick setup with a laptop and seemingly undetectable latency. I have a new top of the line Dell laptop, smoking fast and set up for graphics and music work and, although you can get the latency pretty low with the right settings, it's not usable with my Roland TD17KVA drum kit. The latency is just a buzz kill while trying to play anything, and the outs plainly need to be run through an interface and not back into the Roland unit for output. While there are more powerful laptops in existence, I'd say mine is more powerful than most purchasers will own, and my research on a solution to the excess latency has shown this problem to be extremely common with purchasers using e-drums. This should be made more apparent in sales materials but it isn't mentioned at all.

Still, the product itself is a great value and I'll get a lot of use out of it. Mine was an upgrade from EZD2, and EZD3 easily has enough improvements to warrant the cost. But if you're buying strictly to use with e-drums, I strongly suggest you plan on using an interface to take load/latency out of the "no go" zone.

Still Learning EZ D3

By Dennis F. from So Cal Desert
Music Background: Retired - with more than 6 decades of progressional music experience.

I stepped back to using EZ D2 for more immediate progress with my current PT session work. The EZ D3 look is very nice; but, the feel is a tad awkward for me. I attempted to resize the EZ D3 screen by using a customary diagonal corner arrow technique. But, there was no such corner tool for diagonal movement. As a result, my visual real estate was seriously impaired (regardless of placement upon either of my two monitors). For the time being, EZ D3 will continue to reside as a selectable stereo channel Insert. And once I have dived into the EZ D3 documentation, perhaps I can then make EZ D3 my Drums insert of choice. Upgrade Success!

By Gregory S. from defiance, OH
Music Background: Songwriter & Guitar Player

I was a previous owner of EZdrummer 2 and upgraded to v3. For the price, the upgrade was well worth the money. The interface is more cohesive with the EZbass and EZkeys that I use. I'm particularly impressed with the "Bright" room kit as it has some pretty good sounding drums. They have also upgraded the song parts to include more options such as fills, pickups, endings, verse2 and more.

Bottom line - for me, I would have paid twice what I did for this upgrade.

MIDI Editor is the best

By Michael P. from GERMANTOWN, MD

As a home, hobby level producer, I have spent so much time and money trying to improve recording drums. I have come to accept that there are real studios and professional producers for a reason. For serious hobbyist with limited budget like me, I would recommend hooking up a Roland VDrums to PC and use this plugin. This drum plugin became the hero of our band's demo mix. Our drummer re recorded drums using a Roland VDrums and we used this plugin. The entire sound of our band's mix sounds so much better. The dynamics of drum playing can be significantly improved using the MIDI editor. We also have the luxury of replacing snares and kicks after recording the whole band to make the sound fit better with the song. Well worth it.

V3 also has this selection to find the brand of your EDrums. When I pluged in my EDrums everything were assigned correctly. No need to repoint triggers.

Lastly, if latency is a concern, that's more of a DAW adjustment. And i was able to set it up that our drummer does not feel any.

A Drummer without issues

By Ted from Shallotte, NC
Music Background: Playing and performing for 40 years

I had EZ Drummer 1 and then upgraded to 3. Fantastic. I love having the piano roll to edit the drums and place hits where I need them and take them out where I don't. The sounds are wonderful and the flexibility is a plus. The best part is that I don't have to worry if it has to wait for his girlfriend to get off work to drive him to the studio.

Easy Drummer 3

By Jeff G. from Middle Tennessee
Music Background: Professional musician - 40 years

I'm loving my EZ Drummer 3. However, I'm disappointed that the midi edit feature wasn't available on the EZ Drummer 1-2 upgrade which caused me to have to upgrade. In other words, I had to pay for a feature that I'd already had and enjoyed prior.

Better than a drummer?

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Home recording

The grid editor is worth the price of the upgrade on its own. Easier to record than a drummer with questionable hygiene and suspicious personal habits. Installs easily, I find endless uses for EZ drummer in my recordings.

Better than expected

By Diamond J. from Wisconsin
Music Background: Producer, audio engineer, musician for 30 years plus years.

Was able to quickly put together a drum track with much less effort than with the more expensive drum instruments that I own. Simplicity is. Virtue. Sounds are excellent. Staying with this one.

Disappointed

By Justin from Iowa
Music Background: Home recording

I'm not impressed with the "upgrades" of EZD 3. I bought the upgrade hoping the bandmate feature would save time and make finding grooves easier. It does not. I have a hard time with the bandmate feature coming up with anything that fits or is remotely useful . It's really frustrating. I went back to the old way of searching for grooves on my own because it's quicker than trying to have the bandmate feature come up with anything. Even the tap to find works better than bandmate. It's way quicker for me to find grooves on my own and then click find similar grooves for more grooves that fit my music. I'm not sure why I can't seem to get the bandmate feature to work worth a crap but I find it more frustrating than useful. I wish I would've saved my money and just stuck with using EZ Drummer 2. I honestly don't use any of the new "features" the upgrade provides since I edit the drum grooves in my daw anyways. I had higher hopes for this. I will say the drums sound nice though, but I hardly find that worth the $99 upgrade price. My opinion is the upgrade needs work.

Easy to use, intuitive controls

By eastern O. from eastern Oregon
Music Background: performer, studio player, director

AS an original owner of Ez Drummer2 , I was hoping this upgrade would have a similar interface...and it sort of does...Those who are new to EZ Drum3 would be able , after a short learning curve, be able to generate drum tracks quite easily. Getting to some of the familiar patches requires scrolling through a lot of drop down windows etc....but it allows for a lot more options. Good product. I gave it 4 stars BECAUSE any software can always be made better...EZ Drummer 3 is a great addition to my tool box

Big improvements over version 2

By JR from Texas
Music Background: 12 years

Having the step editor in ezdrummer is a huge improvement. I always found it frustrating having to go back and forth with a daw. Next big thing I would like t see is midi bookmarks in the sequence so you could use a foot controller for live performances. Love this software!

Awesome Interface

By Mariano j.

Excellent interface, totally renewed, the drum kits sound superior to all previous editions.
Also the midi capture bandmate option makes it a very useful tool for any producer or songwriter.
Very satisfied with the product, I recommend it, 10 points, it is not wasted
Of course in the best music store, number 1 , Sweetwater.
