Perfect for 6 string guitarists
These are high quality strings. This lighter gauge will make the BASS VI feel more like a regular guitar. If you use a pick and a lighter touch, these are the strings for you. If you are used to a regular bass, these string will feel too slinky, so go with the Fender 24-100 set.
GReat Tone - floppy E
These strings have great DAddario tone , BUT - the low E is WAY TOO FLOPPY. The E, A and possibly the D are too small and have less tension so - they are very floppy and boingy. The Low E needs to be at least a 90 instead of a floppy 84. This set will disappoint you...
Low E on this set...should have been a 0.95
Having played the Bass IV for over more then 5 year now, I think the D'Addario set is not bad. However, the Low E (0.84) is indeed too floppy. A 0.95 (like the more expensive La Bella set) would be a far better solution if you tune this instrument one octave lower then a regular guitar (E-e)
However, you might considering putting a "Buzz Stop", which you'd normally would use on a Jazzmaster of Jaguar to get rid of the string buzz, on your Bass VI trem for better overall string tension. I did this and never looked back. I'm very please with this mod. It even makes the EXL 156 feel and play much better.
I use the VI as my main bass in a Surf rock trio drenched in reverb and echo and for that sound, the EXL 156 is not bad.
Floppy sets
this set is way too light for the Fender or Squier Bass VI ! these sound better, but are too floppy , especially on the low E and do not have the correct tension across the neck. i cannot figure why both Fender and D'Addario continue to produce string sets that are too light and floppy for this instrument, in spite of intense complaints and comments by players.. The web forums are filled with this same type comment.
The proper gauges ie: low E at 95 or more - will make an obvious and striking difference in string tension, and playability .
What was D'Addario thinking?
These strings are real nice... until you get to the .84 gauge low E string and it's way too floppy and loose. I recommend the LaBella Roundwound VI set instead. It's twice as expensive as the D'Addario set, but they don't skimp out on the low E.
Pawnshop Bass Vi Strings
Bought 2 packs of these D'Addario strings for my Fender Pawnshop Bass VI.
These strings have a great tone for this particular instrument! You get nice low end and also a nice mellow bright tone from the higher strings. The strings seems well made, dont hurt your fingers, and at this price Im glad I could grab more than one pack. Overall, Im very happy with these D'Addario strings. Sweetwater ships quickly too!
