MXR EVH Phase 90 Eddie Van Halen Phase Pedal Reviews

Classic Phaser Pedal with Eddie Van Halen's Signature Frankenstein Guitar Look, and New Script Switch

The MXR Eddie Van Halen Phase 90 pays its tribute to the legendary guitarist who first rocked our ears on his debut album in 1978! Now, more than 25 years later, the guitar work on that album still inspires and amazes young guitarists everywhere - and a huge part of that signature tone is due to Eddie's MXR Phase 90. Giving you the same trance-inducing warbles and sonic swirls that made the Phase 90 the famous pedal it is today, Eddie collaborated with Dunlop to update this Phase 90, delivering even more tonal possibilities that Eddie himself is proud of. A new Script switch lets you toggle between a vintage "Script Logo" phase tone, and more in-your-face "Block Logo" phaser. With a new blue LED light and wearing the signature red, white, and black stripes from Eddie's legendary Frankenstein guitar, this MXR EVH Phase 90 is ready rock!

EVH Phase 90

By Edward Wille from Austin on April 23, 2023 Music Background: Played in bands, toured with a couple, but still consider myself a novice.

This pedal is fantastic, better than I had imagined. The first few Van Halen albums feature this pedal. I only use the script button option, as Eddie did early on. A great pedal, totally worth it. It will inspire you 100%.

EVH Phase 90 is awesome!

By Cory Barnhart from FAIRMOUNT, IN on March 1, 2023 Music Background: 45 year musician

Loving the sounds from this pedal, as always fast and great service from Sweetwater also.

Sounds like Eddie

By Tom J from Maine on February 20, 2023

Plugged it in, pushed the script button, turned the dial to 9 o'clock and there it was. This is the sound. It's "the one the one you love, c'mon baby show your love, hey give it to me." Buy this pedal.

I was going to buy the phase 95 because it has more bells and whistles and costs less. Some reviews said it sounded the same, some said it didn't. I wondered if with this one I would just be paying for a paint job. Anyway, I bought this and it is perfect. I use it playing VH but also playing all kinds of other stuff.

The missing piece

By Sweetwater Customer on January 20, 2023

I had a decent set up with my Marshall amp but this pedal made an immediate difference. I love playing Van Halen and hearing how well this pedal came out made it well worth it.

I wish every pedal was as easy and inpiring after you plugged in through it! After owning a few this one vibes with me.

A must have pedal!

By Dylan Sultzbach on July 22, 2022

I've had this pedal for about a year now, and I love everything about it! I love everything EVH is involved in, and this is no exception. Let's forget the Frankenstein stripe design for a second, this pedal has a built in button that allows you to go from modern phase effects to vintage 70s style phase swirling. It really does replicate the effects heard in Eruption and a lot of the other early Van Halen tracks, but it doesn't stop there. This can be used for any number of styles you need. All in all, it's a must have for anybody trying to replicate Eddie's Brown Sound. And even if you aren't trying to replicate his tone, it's still a great addition to your pedalboard.

The best there is, was, and ever will be!

By Brandon Howell from New Martinsville WV on April 18, 2022 Music Background: Lead guitarist/session musician

One knob, mode button, and it's built like a tank. I've had mine for years. I've used it so much and I only use the script setting and it's truly the best phaser ever made. You know a phase 90 when you hear it. Analog, built well, designed by the man himself, and sounds amazing. Built to last and for the road!

Very nice

EVH killer phase

By KOOBS from Thornton, CO on December 21, 2021 Music Background: 40+ years active musician

This pedal is small, looks cool, and easy to fit into your arsenal. It honestly doesn't get any easier than this, set the knob at 9 O'Clock and instant EVH phase sound. If you're going for his style and sound, then this pedal would be a must!

Classic Eddie in a box!

By Carl Benton from Wichita, KS on December 15, 2021 Music Background: 43 years of playing guitar ( since 6 years old)

Finally, after 40 years of playing guitar and being so heavily influenced by the 1st Van Halen album as a young 6 year old. I've finally bought the effects pedal that rounds out my quest for the "Brown Sound"

I really enjoy this pedal because of the options you get to choose from that classic "Script" sound or the more bolder "Bold" phase 90 sound. I, personally, find the script setting more my style with the regen know set at 9.

Can't say enough about this pedal! And Sweetwater offered an excellent price and got my product promptly.

A Must Have for any Classic 70's Van Halen or Hard Rock enthusiast!

Pure Phase 90

Excellent additional to the pedal board, great phase distortion, no extra noise, just works! MXR quality construction, no issues.

Excellent pedal !

By Gregg S from Moreno Valley , Ca on September 18, 2021 Music Background: Beginner. Been playing for fun for about 2 yrs

Im a fairly new guitar player and have only used a distortion box. I had no idea what this kind of pedal even did. I watched a sweetwater video about the pedal and bought it. It's really fun to play with and makes it easier to play with the effect that it does. I also bought a saabra cadabra and a cry baby and got them all set up and ready to and broke my left arm the same night and have to wait 4 more weeks to play them all hooked up together. Bummer, i wanted to see what i sounded like together with all the pedals but its a lot of fun by itself.

Keep it Simple

Love this Phase. Simplicity makes it perfect to get that old school phase sound. Built to last and killer looks.

Van halen 1 in a pedal!!!

By Dan from Wisconsin on August 4, 2021 Music Background: Rock and metal

The mxr phase 90 is a great pedal and this one is the best because it has the script phase 90 and the block phase 90 in one pedal so you have some options. Turn it to 10 o'clock on the script setting with some gain and its the first van halen album sound in a pedal. Or just use it as the bullet proof piece of gear that mxr has been making for years you can't go wrong with a mxr stomp box.

GET IT!!!

By Patrick on March 21, 2021

Like Paul Gilbert said "it's Van Halen I in a box". Once you get it you will want to learn the whole album. I learned three songs from VH I in the first day of having it. This pedal makes you sound like Eddie himself and you won't want to stop playing. It's just an all around great pedal and if your thinking of getting one to add to your pedalboard do it!

EVH pedal

This pedal I've waited for, for years just kept putting it off. Simple, one knob ...EVH ....enough said....Done. The pedal Sounds great, completely does the trick ...EDDIE VAN HALEN REST IN PEACE, MAYGOD HAVE MERCY ON YOUR SWEET SOUL!

Phase 90 with some Eddie VH attitude, great addition.

This is THAT phaser sound from the first VH album

By Johnny on October 21, 2020

This pedal nails the classic MXR Phase 90 sound immortalized in the first Van Halen album. I ordered mine before Ed passed away. It was backordered even before he died! My MXR EVH Phase 90 arrived today and it sounds awesome. Push the Script switch IN, turn the control knob to the 9 o' clock position, and there it is, the magic. It's kind of bittersweet to hear that sound now. God bless Eddie Van Halen!

After all these years I thought EVH was using a flanger until I read up on his gear. It works perfectly!

KILLER PHASER!

By Jason McDermott from Little Egg Harbor, NJ on November 27, 2018

This blows away my standard phase 90. Like two in one. Very lush and swirly. Great for tremolo picking. LOVE IT! I RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY.

EVH Phase 90

By Mike from Portland, OR on November 12, 2018

I've had phasers, flangers, screamers... all kinds of pedals in my day, but this one takes the cake. I LOVE this pedal. It brings so much depth and pop to my playing. It really gives a great sound to my setup.

Plus - I don't know why they did this but the led is a VERY bright blue that creates a really cool atmosphere in my home studio. Love it!

This is my new favorite and may well be the best pedal I've ever had.

Waylon, Whitey and Stapleton

By Sam Nasello from Louisiana on September 6, 2018

Really nailed the old/new country tones I was looking for. A cranked Princeton with my Tele in drop D is pure old school country with this pedal

Great pedal

This is an awesome pedal, I would definitely recommend it!

Set your phaser to stunning

By Jamed from Oklahoma on April 2, 2018 Music Background: Musician for 30+ years

Great little phaser pedal. I love the option of the script button to go full on vintage. As always my sakes engineer, Roq Martin did a great job getting my order out the door. It arrived in no time.

Best phaser period

By John Dodge from Memphis, NY on February 23, 2018

I already have effects in loop, but placing this Phase 90 in front of the preamp is where it shines! Helps nail down EVH tone as well as add so much flavor to other aspects of my playing, can't get enough!

Best of the MXR phase 90 models!!

By Paul from N Dallas TX on March 25, 2017

Just got my 2nd one of these having missed its simple use and design, great sound and versatile placement ability. Simply the best sounding phaser with one knob ever. Why the EVH model? While some might assume this is just a cool paint scheme, I have to inform all that every single other MXR phase 90 model I have seen or used suffers a low input bandwidth and output impedance issue which degrades your tone when off, alters your sound and just not cool.
This model has full 1M ohm input headroom and full output quality w no tone loss or altering. You got both modes of the famous MXR phase 90 phaser circuit, which is the most copied and cherished 4 stage phaser circuit ever. With the EVH model the bandwidth and impedance issues are solved. Place it before or after dirt, I have mine rigged to do both. This is the phaser.

EVH 90 best of the MXR phasers

By Paul from N Dallas on February 3, 2017

I had one of these for ages, stupidity struck and I sold it off for my last multi pedal excursion. Missed and getting a 2nd one. The thing is this model not only has your two modes but extended bandwidth and impedance improvement. It does not alter or narrow your tone which is something all the other Phase 45/90 models will do. They are just copies of decades old tech whereas this has been updated to 1M ohm standards. A much better pedal. The EVH MXR model is the one to get. No matter where you put it before or after dirt it delivers the goods.

EVH Phase 90...WOW!!

By Tanner Duckworth on June 1, 2016 Music Background: Acoustic guitar; fingerpicking and Gospel music

I got the EVH phaser as an upgrade from my standard Phase 90...I am floored at how great this pedal sounds!! Nice and warm, good and thick but doesn't get in the way of your guitar's pure tone, and in fact adds something great to it. Love the flexibility in the script button. I use the script button depressed due to its nice subtlety for acoustic guitar, and I like to have the option to make it more pronounced if needed, which is achieved by having the script button unpressed. And plus it looks really neat! :) Highly recommend this pedal...everything from that Eruption tone, to the old Waylon Jennings sounds, to a fast warbling swirl. Check one out for yourself! God bless :)

What can I say, it's Eddie

By Andrew Barrett from San Angelo TX on March 25, 2016 Music Background: Pro, Session, Bar-Band, Worship

It's a phaser, it's THE phaser. You either like the effect or you don't. I've never been a huge effects guy, I like effects that frame the sound of my guitar and amp and give a little extra, but stay subtle. I only like big effects in bursts, like I'll kick on a full jet engine flanger for three seconds and then shut it back off. The Phase 90 is nice because it fills both niches, it's subtle and rich when you want it to be at low volumes, and full and sweeping when you're cranking the gain. Really glad I added it to my rig!

MXR EVH Phase 90

By Sweetwater Customer on November 27, 2015

Great pedal! The many speeds let me use it for a couple solos and a lot of my songs. Love using it on stage with my rig. No loss of tone. Overall, no problems with it and it is a great pedal. Had it for almost 2 years.

Awesome effect, very cool pedal especially with the script/block mode switch. This is the perfect choice to fill the phaser role on my pedal board.

BEST SOUNDING PHASER

By Dave Senk from Clearfield, Utah on December 22, 2014 Music Background: 50 + Years of Playing Guitar

Outstanding sounds from this pedal ! It is strong but subtle at the same time when used alone and blends in perfectly with other effects linked together with it such as Reverb, Flanger and Delay. Some effects don't work well together with any phaser as as they tend to overwhelm the sound you are trying to create. I have found this to be true with trying to use unnatural heavy distortion and Chorus effects with any type of phaser. However, this is the best one out of all the ones I've tried. This is the one you want - very well worth the extra few dollars. Tough, long lasting metal case construction and solid controls.

no other phaser

By Bill Holland from Everett, WA USA on September 25, 2014 Music Background: Pro Musician, Recording Engineer

This is what a Phaser is supposed to sound like! Not even close comparing to another popular brand Phaser!
I like being able to switch from modern to "script" version. "Script" is more subtle, just right; while the standard/modern setting is more dramatic and in your face. The re-issue of the "Script" Phase 90 does not have power jack, must use a battery, so this is the way to go if you prefer to use a pedal power supply rather than batteries.

Analog phasey goodness

By Geno from St. Louis on May 17, 2014

This is what a phaser should sound like. I used a boss ps-3 for years and I also own a Line 6 M13 which has several phase options in it. The EVH phase 90 has a much more organic sound quality to it that is difficult to discribe. In the end I sold off my Boss pedal because this sounded much better. Plus it looks cool!

Silent and simple thanks Eddie

By Michael O'Droski from Dearborn, MI on January 26, 2014 Music Background: Pro Guitarist

I run a line 6 pod X3 Live which is great but the phase tends to get lost and I play blues, funk, rock everything. So I run this through the effects loop of the line six along with my EVH flanger. For amps I use a 5 watt Bugera for small gigs and a Peavey 50/50 tube amp into a Madison half stack. This pedal does exactly what is advertised and script button is a great feature.

Analog delight from MXR

By Dr. W. Brice from Phila. PA on August 21, 2012 Music Background: Drummer: new guitar player

This pedal does exactly what it is supposed to do in a stylish
well built MXR pedal. You cannot go wrong with the script button: depress it for "old School" analog phasing and leave it in the up position for more in your face phasing...both settings are subtle in musical differences: phasing is a great effect if used properly. I highly recommend this beautiful pedal for all serious axe players...especially Eddie fans.

V H phase 90

By Sweetwater Customer from Boston ma. on April 23, 2012 Music Background: Guitarist

Awesome pedal!! Must have

Best phaser I own

By Sweetwater Customer on August 16, 2021

I think it's because it's analog and definitely not a model, it hits just right. Just noodle with the knob until it feels good. No, I'm not talking about THAT. I'm talking about the intangible thing that you the player gets, not necessarily what others hear. So, I gotta say this is another one of my "one great setting" pedals. For me, I run it even slower than what you see in the demo videos and it does indeed make whatever I'm doing pop.

So far, this pedal sounds by far the best in the front of my signal chain somewhere. Definitely sounds way better in front of my Friedman BEOD deluxe. I'll rephrase. It sounds effing awesome in front of that pedal going into the clean channel of any of my amps. The two combined makes my practice amp sound exceptionally good.

As far as the script button, I'm not even sure mine works. It sounds the same to me whether in or out, quite unlike the mxr flanger. You definitely know if the EVH is engaged or not.

Cody is my sales guy and he is basically the only guy I trust.

Does the Eddie thing well.

By Nick H from CT on October 20, 2020 Music Background: Pro

This pedal does the classic Van Halen tone very well. In script mode you get a nice warm swirl and vowel like accents to your notes. It has great clarity on chords and sounds way better than the entry level stock Orange phase 90. Keeping the knob in the Classic VH area of almost off through 10 o'clock, you get most of the tones from the albums. It does cut a bit of high end in your tone when engaged. One thing I don't understand is the one I received only has stripes painted on the top part of the pedal, the sides and back are just red. Sweetwater should change the picture, because mine does not have stripes all over it. It still looks okay, but it would look way better completely painted with the VH stripes. I'm hoping they did this for looks and not to cut cost by saving a few gallons of paint. The older one looks cooler. Anyway it sounds proper and almost like a vintage script logo phase 90, but with true bypass and a 9v adapter port. So I am happy!

Thick, rich, swirling tones and lots of fun!

By Kenny C. from Beaverton, OR on January 4, 2015 Music Background: Hobbyist, Composer, Producer, Former Performing Musician

First, I didn't get this because of the EVH name. I'm pretty neutral on EVH in general, but I loved the paint job on this pedal and I liked having the simplicity of the Phase 90 but with a little more versatility of having the script option on the EVH model. At 9-o'clock, you get sweet phasing like you'd expect, but at 12-o'clock, you get some funky fun! That is my favorite setting to use and it makes playing choppy, funky, syncopated goodness even more fun. The only reason I didn't give this pedal at 5-star review is because I think it's pricey for what you get. In my opinion, this pedal is about $30 overpriced, but that's a Dunlop/MXR/EVH issue, not a Sweetwater problem. Still, if you don't mind spending a little extra, this pedal is a blast.

EVH Phase 90

By Sweetwater Customer on December 27, 2014

I wanted to put a little edge on my guitar solo's and ended up with this. This is great for getting some of those Hendrix style riff sounds. Really takes my guitars to another place. I highly recommend this great pedal.

Old School—A Return to Classic Sound

By Johnny au from San Jose on February 26, 2022 Music Background: Guitarist, Singer, Songwriter, Recording Artist, Engineer, Producer, Teacher

I'm pretty stoked with this rig and the price was right. It brought me back a few years and reminded me what I loved so much about the music of the 70's and 80's. In terms of modulation, I think a lot of pedal manufacturers overthink it. Simple is best with the style in which I play and compose.
The only reason I didn't give this thing a full five-star rating is the lack of information in the user guide and the difficulty it takes to read microscopic print. Plus it came with an extra knob that offered no explanation. I'm thinking, "What the heck is this for?" Consulting Sweetwater I was informed that it's a knob cover that goes over the main control knob that enables controlling it with one's foot easier (which I seriously doubt). Would have been nice if they had mentioned something about it in the manual or, at the very least, in the product description by the retailer.
That being said, use of it is pretty intuitive. Pretty easy to figure out where to put it in the signal chain.
Like most new/old gadgets, it's easy to fall in love with it and overdo it, so I try to use it tastefully after initially going hog wild with it.

This thing is outstanding!

By Alec from Phoenix AZ on August 22, 2021 Music Background: YouTube Cover Artist

The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was that I just wish it had its own volume control but other than that, thisFoot pedal gave me the inspiration I needed to write another song!

Ok, I guess

By atrampas on March 9, 2019 Music Background: Professional Musician

I liked it very much, and the switch at the top left gives an extra option that most phaser pedals don't have. However when compared to the Kokko phaser, which is a nano sized-pedal (without the switch option), with two additional knobs for dry/wet blend and depth at a fraction of the price, I'd have to go with the Kokko.

The MXR does have the signature sound though, which is something other phaser pedals don't have.

the bubble sound on springs

By paul pike from Belmont, NH on March 21, 2022

ya ok it works ,but the knowing the whole chain of pedals you need to make evh effects is costly lol.
