Great snare sounds great changing range very easy. Fun playing it. You will love it,
Fantastic! A functional "novel" drum tuning system concept that scores - not a design gimmick
The Sweetwater demo video does a great job of getting the point across. I did need to reset the bottom head to achieve the correct tuning balance. This is mentioned in the manual - always read the manual if using new tech - but once this was done it was a satisfying experience roaming through the tuning range and comparing to a few other snares (brass, carbon fiber, aluminum and maple). Clearly this wasn't going back to Sweetwater. My rep Matt K. no longer needs to wonder if the cool new drum product is hitting its marks - haha - wink.
My new room setup isn't fully complete, and the bit of boxy "medium room reverb / short resonance" thing kicking around really highlights dissonant drum tunings. That said the drum was quite nice at first and when I tested a few different top mutes it really spoke favorably with my kit, cymbals and the room in general. Joy! Maybe WTS will partner with Swiffer to create a little dusting wand for the OCD gear polishers out there ;) I may rely on canned air and Q-tips to get the inevitable dust / other crunchies out, we'll see.
Regardless, it IS much easier to achieve a favorable new tuning pitch / overall sound on the fly. Truly not a gimmick! Of course I hope the tension cables don't provide any unsavory "drift" too quickly as they age, but I suspect this will not be a problem. The materials and design choices appear very well conceived and engineered. Well played WTS! I'll send my "looking for a sponsor" press kit over to WTS right now - Cheers ;)
Very cool, innovative drum
The range on the drum is incredible and the tuning is so easy with the tuning peg. the die cast hoops are a nice touch and look really good on the drum. The pictures don't do the matte finish justice, it is a really nice wrap with a matte texture. Seems to stay in tune just fine. The only thing I had a bit of trouble with was changing the head and getting the tuning wire back around the winder, but to be honest, that was probably mostly user error. Overall I could be happier, its like having 5 snare drums in one!
