I have been playing round wound stainless steel bass strings since I first started playing bass at age 13. Was drawn to the clear springy sound of Chris squires bass from Yes. Have played many brands and finally found what I like in the DAddario XL Pros. These strings sound great - not too fly away and keep their tone for a long time. I was sold on the tapered B string as a way to get the piano tone early on, However, I found out that many string manufacturers just do not care to disclose all the pertinent specs for one to make a rational decision for their purchase. It is just not feasible to experiment with a different set at each string change when Bass strings are upwards of $ a set. I had to do research and reach out to manufacturers to find out more information regarding the taper specifications. Not every tapered string is suitable for every combination of one-piece bridge, bridge & tailpiece, mono-rail or thru-body stringing - usually a compromise is taken, and nearly every manufacturer omits disclosing the tapered LENGTH the most important spec that can make or break a sale. So when my Sales Engineer Joel Helton told me the XL Pro was available in a tapered set I jumped at the opportunity to get them. To my surprise, the 5-string set comes with tapers on the B, E and A strings! And - of course - this is not disclosed. This is great for setting up string height, makes matching the fingerboard radius easier, and has a nice balanced feel across the strings.

Great tapered strings that last.

I wish there was a 45 65 80 100 127 gauge combo though

I've been a DR player for about 24 years now, mostley Lo-Rider Steels, and have been looking for something with similar tone qualities but blossoms faster and plays less stiff on the lower strings in particular. Enter the D'Addario Pro Steel Tapers. Superb design, wonderful tone and fee!

I have been using Pro Steels since back when they called them Prisms. These string are bright and sound great. I prefer a string that attacks on both ends but maintains some meat and these provide me that. I string my main axes with these....Warwick Streamer $$, Modulus Quantum, and G&L Jazz...all five strings. I feel that they last as long as any other string, and of course how often you restring is normally a matter of personal preference. If you like attack, but also want to maintain some balls in your bass sound, then try these out.
