Epiphone Les Paul Special Satin E1 Electric Guitar - Vintage Worn Ebony Reviews

Solidbody Electric Guitar with Poplar Body, Mahogany Neck, Rosewood Fretboard, and 2 Humbucking Pickups - Vintage Worn Ebony

The Epiphone Les Paul Special VE gives you a broken-in look and feel at an amazing price. The Les Paul Special VE delivers a fat and nasty tone, thanks to its two open-coil humbucker pickups. It features a poplar body that is acoustically resonant, and the mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard add warmth and sustain. The Epiphone Les Paul Special VE also boasts a cool vintage worn finish that feels just right. This is the go-to guitar for those who want to learn on a Les Paul-style guitar but don't want to break the bank.

Epiphany

By Opie Brooks from RADFORD, VA on May 5, 2023 Music Background: 35 years playing live and recording

I bought this guitar to modify initially but after playing it I was pleasantly surprised at the tone. It will be my beater guitar but is more than adequate for my use case. I want to say that my sales rep Joel was especially helpful in this process and I will not hesitate to give him a call about any gear related issues I have. Sweetwater is the best!!!

Good guitar

I bought this guitar to modify but playing it after purchasing I was pleasantly surprised. It sounded good enough to keep original and I think that should say all I need to.

Pretty hard to beat this quality and sound at such a great price

By Randy H from CHICAGO, IL on August 14, 2022

I'm not a life-long guitar expert, with any particularly deep knowledge of rare woods or whatever. I do know that at this price I'm not getting the luxury class of pickups or tuners... but honestly, I've had my hands on a lot of different guitars over the years, and this doesn't feel like wasted money in my hands. Good clean sound, attractive look, and it works well enough for me to do what I need to do.

Insane value for the money.

This guitar has thoroughly impressed me. In short, this instrument just gets things done. No frills, no fancy tricks, just good tones, good playability, and good looks. For $, I am very impressed with this instrument. This would be an absolutely excellent first guitar, or small gig guitar.

Pros:
-Durable
-Bridge is good
-Neck feels great
-Fretwork is pretty good
-Pickups are amazing for a $ guitar

Cons:
-Cavities are kind of small, making modifications harder
-Tuners are not great but they work
-Mine came with damaged wiring. Easy repair for someone who knows how to solder but not everyone does

A great affordable Les Paul

By Morveux Wollock from HOLMEN, WI on November 8, 2021

This being my first guitar, I may be a little biased, but there is nothing I have wanted to do with this guitar that it could not handle, and I am confident that it will continue to handle everything i throw at it. I added inlay stickers to mine and I love the way it looks so much. Also thank you to Tyler Nigro as this guitar was in my hands within a week!

Great tones

At this affordable price, I've got to say this Epiphone LP VE is kind of versatile and it boasts great looks and powerful tones. No flaws found and the electronics are great. Amazing playability and extremely gorgeous to me. Oh, and the Sweetwater customer service was awesome, as usual.

Very Surprised With Sound and Quality!

By sierracustomleather from Nevada on March 6, 2018

Again Tyler Davis was awesome to work with! I bought this guitar primarily to model my custom made designer leather guitar straps. I figured the black would go with a wide variety of leather selections and colors. I have a vintage Telecaster that I play and didn't expect to really play this guitar much. On a whim I plugged it in and took off. HOLY SMOKES! For the price do not underestimate this guitar. Great sound and quality workmanship. The bridge pickups needed some adjusting as well as some new strings as the G string it came with was a little rough and sticky. Nevertheless, its a very nice guitar for the price!

Great guitar for the price

By James from Lancaster, PA on December 23, 2017 Music Background: Playing guitar for over 30 years

This is a very good guitar for a cheap price. Very easy to customize as well..... I put hotter pickups in mine and tweaked a few things and now it screams and plays very well.

No-frills, totally playable

By Chris Dumm from VANCOUVER, WA on November 18, 2022

Pros: decent pickups, good setup, good sound, pretty good fit and finish.

Cons: sloppy tuners, satin neck, rough frets, chunky neck joint.

It turns out that $ can get you a completely playable guitar that sounds pretty good. I'll leave the aesthetic judgments up to you, in my eyes it's plain but not ugly.

The fit and finish isn't fabulous, but it's consistently decent. There are no rough spots or paint overruns. Nothing buzzes or rattles or hums: the pots and the 3-way switch and the stopbar Tune-o-Matic bridge all do their jobs. The intonation is correct and the nut is cut correctly. The setup is spot-on but a little tall for my tastes.

There are a few issues worth mentioning, though.

The frets are sized properly and smoothed at the ends, but they're a little rough on top and they really love a gentle fluff and buff with fine sandpaper and steel wool.

The tuners are the weakest link in the whole package. They don't stay in tune very long, even without any string bending.

The neck is painted on the back, and the satin finish isn't smooth and slidey like we expect. It doesn't make my playing suck, but it doesn't feel great.

The bolt-on neck joint is pretty chunky, and it can make the highest frets much less comfortable to reach. But maybe im spoiled because my other LP is a Gibson with a set neck.

But all of these issues are pretty minor, are easily remedied, and they don't make this a bad guitar by any yardstick. I bought one so I'd always have a guitar to play when I fly to visit my parents, and I'm very satisfied with what my $ got me.

Didn’t like it

Just didn't feel or sound right for me. I sent it back

Black beauty

By d.brown from CA on March 21, 2018

I bought this guitar for a customization project so I wasn't expecting much. After 3 months I made a call to my Rep Ryan Murphy and he put me in contact with a Sweetwater tech. Long story short Sweetwater sent me a replacement box with return shipping as I threw out the box it came in. In addition they are going to perform service on the guitar at no charge. This kind of customer service is almost unheard of. I'm going to have Sweetwater upgrade the bridge pickup with a DiMarzio Tone Zone while they have it. For customer service Sweetwater gets a 5.0 as for the guitar Epiphone can do better.
