One for the long haul

By Sweetwater Customer on February 28, 2024 Music Background: Playing since the ‘70s

I've had mine for about 10 years now, and it plays as well as any Gibson. Intonation stays perfect, and I've only adjusted truss rod once, and no buzzes since. Great, light, and beautiful guitar for the money.

Better Than Expected

By Nathan Cups from SURPRISE, AZ on July 28, 2023

I honestly didn't know what to expect from a sub $ Epiphone. The guitar's finish is flawless. The guitar sounds great. The neck, fingerboard, and frets are excellent. I'm very happy with this guitar.

Great Value Guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on June 28, 2023

Intermediate player, College Student on a budget. This guitar was my first new guitar in 7 years. I think it offered a great value and everything that I was looking for. I liked being able to choose the weight on Sweetwater, as I prefer heavier SGs. Customer service was excellent as well as the packing. I've been playing it non-stop, every day, for the past 6 months or so. I've modded it, as its very easy to service. The experience with this guitar has been nothing short of excellent, and I definitely got my money's worth.

Sweetwater is awesome

Sweetwater and their team are the best!! My better half called in an order which was not the same as the linked Epiphone sg guitar demo I sent her. Luckily I was able to call them before they shipped the "wrong" guitar and they were able to swap it out with the one I originally wanted! Thank you so much Sweetwater and team!!!

As good as the reviews say

By Jim on May 4, 2023 Music Background: Rock bands and worship leader for years.

The first guitar I ever bought was was a Gibson SG over fifty years ago. It would not stay in tune, but I didn't know about the g string at the nut problem, so I traded it for a Stratocaster. I don't play in bands anymore so I have sold most of my expensive guitars but I missed the humbucker sound, so I saw this Epiphone and thought the price was so good how could I lose. It checked out the guitar thoroughly when it finally arrived (FedEx took an extra day sending it all the way to Kansas City and back for no reason) and I was pleasantly surprised that it needed no adjustment. The relief, string height and intonation were spot on. The fit and finish were perfect. It plays great and best of all, no problem staying in tune. If you are looking for a great guitar at a great price I don't think you could find a better choice. I am happy my music journey has come full circle.

Very pleased!

I had been reading about the Epiphone " Inspired by Gibson " line for a while and decided to get this model in Cherry, I already had the Epiphone G-400 Pro but the upgrades on this series intrigued me. I am so glad I got this guitar as it is superior in all areas to the G-400 ( which I sold ) it is so close to my friend's Gibsons I have played it is uncanny, I will never be in the Gibson tax bracket but now I have something that can stand right there with the more expensive brand. Thanks again to my sales engineer Mark Magdich and to Sweetwater for making this new purchase a pleasure and issue-free.
I look forward to my next purchase, and I highly recommend this guitar and Sweetwater for your musical needs.

Worth every penny.

First of all I'm a huge AC/DC and Led Zeppelin fan so owning this style guitar is a dream come true. This version specifically has very nice grain lines and finish. It was ready to play as soon as I unboxed it. All setup and in tune. Buying from Sweetwater was right choice. Collin, with the Sweetwater sales team absolutely knocked it out of the park with excellent customer service, guidance and genuine interest in what I was looking for in a guitar. If you're in the fence-Don't be. You won't be disappointed.

Epiphone SG is the best!

First Epiphone and I’m Impressed!

By Nathan Cups from SURPRISE, AZ on June 24, 2022

Got this SG Standard today and I'm impressed. The wood and the finish on the guitar is excellent. It's as good as my ESP LTD and a little better than my Schecter. It is much better than my IYV and my Harley Benton. The intonation and action are great. The upper fret access is okay. The weight of the guitar is a little lighter than I expected. The pickups sound really good and the volume and tone pots have a decent range on them. I would highly recommend this guitar for someone looking for a budget SG. John Tonello and the Sweetwater team knocked it out of the park on this one. Easy ordering, good price, fast shipping, and a great set up.

Love it

By David L. on June 24, 2022

I've used a cheap guitar for the longest time and this was my first upgrade and I was surprised at the absurd gap in sound quality. Just goes to show that you shouldn't be stingy with guitars. Also I just love Epiphones on general so I will admit I am biased. Either way, I love it!

Epiphone SG Standard (Heritage Cherry)

By Danny Levers from NY on January 15, 2021

The rumors are true: Epiphone has upped their game in a big way. Among the best values in its price range, this beautiful SG plays and sounds great (thanks for the awesome setup, by the way, Sweetwater). The slimtaper neck offers a well struck balance of speed and comfort, while the Alnico Classic Pro pickups bring the thunder. It's worth noting these pickups are, as others have described, "more pointy" sounding than their "rounder" Probucker counterparts; this edge the Alnico Classic Pros have to them is, imo, better suited to more aggressive styles of playing than the Probuckers. It's also been my experience that the Alnico Classic Pros have more clarity and definition than the sometimes muddy Probuckers. Anyway, the example I purchased arrived in flawless condition and really dispelled my skepticism about buying a guitar online. Sweetwater proved easy to work with and obliged my request to have the guitar shipped in the hard case I purchased for it, and everything was shipped in ample and secure packaging. There is not a blemish to be found on this axe, and I've had no issues with intonation or fret buzz.

Rock out of the boxxxx

I was looking to get a SG guitar and was not wanting to drop $2000 + on a Gibson which has it's on qc problems. I was wanting to get the ebony standard epiphone which Sweetwater only had 1. It was a Saturday and they had 4 of the heritage cherry I thought I could make it to Monday and call in my order. That night the ebony sold out. Sunday 2 H,Cherry sold. I had to act fast I placed my order Sunday night. Good thing the other 1 sold out Monday. Great SG everything about it sounds great. The only thing I had to do was to lower the bridge pickup very little. Looks great sounds great plays great. Take that Gibson. Quick delivery on a great guitar. Thanks Sweetwater.

Epiphone SG

By DaveB from New Hampshire on July 15, 2020 Music Background: Pretty much self taught with minor intructions

Seems to be a great guitar, I like the sounds I can Get from it. The setup is almost perfect and the intonation seems to be right on. I think at the price it was a very good deal and I am happy with the guitar.

Unbelievable!!

By Pete Bialk from Detroit on July 4, 2020

If you've picked up an Epiphone guitar prior to this year then you know the usual "looks like a Gibson, feels and sounds like knockoff" feeling you get when you play one. To my amazement those days appear to be over. I own a 50's Les Paul standard and now this SG standard and both of them left me unable to justify the $2k price difference between them and their Gibson counterparts. Both the Les Paul and this SG have 3 distinct sounds with the pickup selections from thick creamy rythem to rock n roll crunch in the trebel. The neck is substantial in your hand and the fret work is that of other $1k and up guitars in my collection. It's a steal at the current price, and I will be buying a few more inspired by Gibson models before they price goes up. 5 stars all day and twice on Sunday!

Absolutely beautiful guitar, highly recommended, zero complaints!!

2020 EpiSG

By Sweetwater Customer on March 14, 2020 Music Background: average guitar player

First off let me say that I was a bit concerned about this purchase. My first guitar was an Epiphone SG400 and it is truly a beginner guitar in every way. Not bad but not review worthy in my mind. Also my comparison guitars are a Plecked Gibson SG Standard with 57's and a Gibson Les Paul JR. A lot of the pro reviews and forum talk have said that the finish and the frets and the set up are the most consistent issues with these new 2020 Epiphone's so buying one online felt dicey to me.
So on with the review. Simply put this guitar just makes you want to pick it up and play. There is nothing wrong or sketchy about this guitar at all. I like the stripped look of the back and front with the solid edges. The frets are perfect and the feel of the guitar is actually as good as my Gibson SG...yep sounds crazy but it's true. The pick ups are somewhat brighter than my Gibson but in a good way and the electronics and hardware are perfect. I popped the back plate to confirm CTS pots and to see the quality of the wiring, very good work. I don't know if these actually qualify as "Inspired by Gibson"in every sense of the word but something inspired Epiphone to really up their game in terms of quality. Is this a Gibson? No but they closed the gap big time in my opinion. I would recommend a pro set up but that should go without saying for any guitar. Sweetwater set this guitar up exactly how I wanted it. Finally my rep. Ryan Murphy is simply outstanding and Sweetwater is the place to go for gear hands down.

first SG for this dude !

By jimmy from west tennessee on February 16, 2020

this guitar is a solid buy . . arrived with an exceptional set up , and is really well crafted . haven't found a flaw in this guitar . . usually buy les pauls , decided to mix it up and i'm really glad I did.

solid upgrade for an intermediate guitarist!!

By Sweetwater Customer from Bradenton, FL on January 23, 2023 Music Background: piano (20 years), cello (12 years), guitar (3 years)

This is my second electric guitar after an ill-fitting impulse buy of a Squier Bullet Mustang HH—I loved the pickups over any single-coil Fender or Squier I'd tried, but the short scale and narrow nut were a mistake for my long fingers. I was torn between an SG and a standard Fender scale and am glad I went Epiphone! The timbre is very dark, which I *generally* prefer, but I'm glad for the dedicated knobs so I can brighten up the tone as needed—it's wayyy more versatile than its iconic genre associations.

The SG I always wanted

By Kevin from Texas on July 10, 2020 Music Background: Been playing since 2006.

I've always wanted a Gibson SG but never wanted to pay the SG price for one. I was always a bit weary of Epiphone guitars because I thought they were mostly an entry level beginners guitar like Squier. Well when I saw this new "inspired by Gibson" line that they just released this year and read that they were built very close to Gibson specs, I decided it was finally time. Plus I love the SG with the big batwing style pickguard and the price was reasonable too. I am beyond impressed. It plays just as well as the 1,000-1,500 Gibson SG guitars I've played in the past and sounds just as good as them in my opinion. I was very impressed. Epiphone has really stepped their game up with these. Straight out the box you can get that clean jazzy sound or that classic Angus Young hard rock tone. It's good for Hard Rock, Blues, Jazz, Classic Rock...it's just an all around good guitar for the price. My only complaint is the crappy factory tuners (a typical Gibson/ Epiphone problem) but that's nothing a set of Grover 135N tuning machines can't fix.

When I sold my Peavey HP Signature EXP about 10 years ago, I never thought I'd find another guitar that would replace how good that one was unless I spent 1,000 plus on a good guitar (my Peavey was 750 back in 2006). This guitar more than fills that void.

EPI IMPROVEMENT

By Fuzzy Biggs from The Great State Of TEXAS on April 8, 2024 Music Background: Studio and FOH engr. Long Time Guitar Player, Some Bass

At one time I had an Epi SG and LP. got rid of both. this new SG is a lot better than ether of them. out of the box it had problems though, the frets were quite rough with file marks, though they were almost level, with only two high frets. the fret ends were beveled but were like a cactus. after cleaning up all of that, it plays nice. the pickups are ok but not very high output. I did change out the bridge pickup for something hotter with more output, I am a hard rock to metal guy. the guitar had few dings and scratches and Sweetwater was kind enough to give me a discount. Sweetwater always comes through, great company. if you buy one of these maybe it wont have any of these issues, if so with a little work you can make it sound and play a whole lot like a Gibbson. also I don't see any reason to change out the machine heads as they are smooth and are holding tune. maybe some lockers later, will see. be sure to put strap locks on it. don't want to drop this baby. any way it will turn out to be a real nice guitar. ROOOCK ON.
