Very nice guitar, feels great, plays nice, surprisingly lightweight too. Definitely worth the low price!

worth it

Love it, looks cool plays even better (once you set it up). Im 55yo, been playing Gibson since 85 Always wanted a Flying V but the Gibson version of the RI58 is very pricy and the other less expensive V's that Gibson make have the stop bar tail witch I don't care for (on the V). But when I saw this EPI RI58 I pulled the trigger and I am very pleased I did. I also got the EPI case for it and that is nice as well.
The Guitar looks great and feels great. I love the neck its very smooth.
I oiled the fret board, put on my favorite strings, lowered the action and was off.

YOWZA!!

I've always loved Vs, and have had great experiences with recent Epiphones. Gigged with LPs, a Genesis, 2 SG Customs and a Brendon Small Thunderhorse. All were of excellent quality and served me admirably...but I was waiting for that ONE V that spoke to me.
This is that one.
Build quality- excellent/outstanding. No finish divots, dents or orange peel. The neck joint is solid, with no overspray or buildup. The frets are well polished and even, and fret ends are (almost) snag free...only needed the Dremel for 2 frets on the bass side, but I'm VERY fussy. All hardware was tight and scratch free. Nut was well dressed and free of binding issues. The tuners are decent...they do their job, tho I'm tempted to upgrade them.
Electronics - Call me crazy, but I have NEVER changed out any Epi ProBuckers! They work for me, pure and simple. They're so similar to the PAFs and early DiMarzios I grew up with that I know how to get the tones I want. It helps that this has CTS pots and a Switchcraft selector, which are much better than the usual Alpha crap.
Playability - Dude, it's a V! Seated it's a challenge...tho it has the skid plate on the lower wing. It's actually a pretty good position for serious shredding of neo-classical metal! But we all know the true test is standing, and this V doesn't disappoint. The neck shape is a Slim Taper C, which seems to be a rather variable shape despite the CNC machining used.
Side note: I had two Epi SGs that listed the same neck shape, but were VERY different.
BUT the shape on this V is probably the most comfortable I've found!
Overall, this little beast rips! It looks cool as Mustaine, plays incredibly well, and can snarl like a P-38.
The rest is up to you!

Great sound from these pickups!

By Sweetwater Customer from California on January 2, 2021

I've had the guitar about a week now.. I am really enjoying it! Epiphone has really stepped up their game. The neck profile is round not the flattened D shape they had recently. I lowered the bass side nut slots just a bit for my taste, now the action is smooth and comfortable. The sound is really amazing. These pickups sound so good. The aspect I am most impressed and pleased by is that it stays in tune perfectly! The intonation is flawless up and down the whole neck! I can bend strings and get aggressive with vibrato up and down the fret board and then ring an open chord and it is perfectly in tune, then play a chord in 12th position and the intonation is spot on. Well done Epiphone!

My first V

By Wax from Las Cruces, S. NM. on April 27, 2022

Michael Schenker was the guitar whiz kid who first inspired me to pick up a guitar when I first heard that feedback intro to "Let It Roll" when I was an 11 y/o kid back in '75. I had always thought V's were quite cumbersome for me especially sitting down. Long story short I've gone through countless Strats and a couple Les Pauls over the past 40 years and I thought it was about time to get one. This V rocks quite well right out of the box. The pickup's got a good snarl and the clean tones are warm and smooth. I did have to sand the fret ends a little but was no problem considering the price point. As always with most of my guitars I modified this V with a couple of coats of semi gloss polyurethane on the fret board for a smoother and darker feel and threw in a zebra Dimarzio Tone Zone in the bridge and zebra PAF Pro in the neck. That's just my personal preference and is not necessary for a good sounding guitar. It sounds good as is. Over all it's a great guitar and I highly recommend it if you're a huge Schenker fan like me. BTW Corey's and Tim Burgess personal service is hands down the best in the business. Thank you Sweetwater.

Great Guitar

By Sweetwater Customer on October 13, 2020

I've had this for a month now. The tuners aren't the best and the bridge really sucks, but everything else is pretty good. Very comfortable to play, you can even play sitting down thanks to a non-skid strip Epiphone installed on the bottom side of the body. The neck is really nice, but I had to file down some sharp ends. Electronics are good and the Probucker pickups sound solid. I would have preferred a stop tailpiece rather than thru the body mount just because of the break angle it puts on the strings. The bridge is junk, plan on replacing that. The bridge pieces do not follow the radius of the fretboard, the two pieces in the middle are the same height and are much higher than the two on each end. Makes intonation tough. But it's still a great guitar, just needs a few inexpensive upgrades.

Not For Everyone

By Sweetwater Customer from MI on October 14, 2022 Music Background: Degreed Musician

I bought this guitar about a month ago. As I was initially underwhelmed, I chose to wait a bit before posting a review. I would like to first admit this was an emotional purchase, as the first electric guitar I bought 40 years ago was a Harmony Flying V from the Wards catalog. When I saw Epiphone's recent offering it tugged at my sense of nostalgia, so I bought one.

The good: Great neck and fretwork, I was quite impressed. The tuning machines seem to be of acceptable quality. The fit and finish is much better than I expected. The guitar was well packaged and arrived on time... kudos Sweetwater!

The bad: The bridge is very low quality... constant intonation problems. Maybe I happened to receive a bad one. The pickups are unbalanced and harsh. I hear many positive reviews on the Probucker pups... I'm not seeing it. As I own another guitar with Probuckers I can attest to having the same luke warm experience. They're budget pups... period. The nut was also very high. I had to file quite a bit to get it right. That said, the action is now amazing!

In light of the fact that the pups will need to be swapped and an upgraded bridge installed, the price point comes into question. Perhaps one of Epiphone's upscale V's would've been a better value. At $ I think this guitar is a bit overpriced.

That said, I will keep this guitar (and enjoy it) once the upgrades are complete. It's a pleasure to hold and the neck is fantastic! With some tweaks, this can be a great guitar if you're willing to make the journey.

Needs work and upgrades

By Adam from INDIANA on September 27, 2021 Music Background: 30 year player, gigging musician

I have wanted a Flying V for sometime. I have had this guitar for almost a year. Right off the bat when I got it, it had to have a Fret level done. Could not get it to play properly. Sweetwater did cover the cost of the fret level which was awesome. However the electronics were not good. Pots are CTS so they weren't bad. I had changed out the PUP's to something that suited my needs. Sounds just killer after all that was changed. But now the guitar will not stay in tune. The bridge is horrible. The intonation is always off no matter how much my luthier worked on it. I'm going to have to upgrade the tuners, bridge, and nut to get this guitar right. IMO it's not worth the 600 dollar price point for all the upgrades that need to be done. Great sounding guitar though. But what I'm in for it now I might as well spent a little more and got something with better quality.
