Electro-Harmonix 2 x 12-inch Speaker Cabinet Reviews

60W, 16-ohm, 2x12" Closed-back Cabinet

The Electro-Harmonix 2 x 12-inch speaker cabinet is crafted to be the perfect match for your EHX MIG-50 tube amplifier head. But considering it's loaded with a pair of custom-voiced EHX speakers, and that it's rated for 60 watts of power handling, it's a great cab for any amplifier head — or as an extension speaker cabinet for your favorite combo amplifier, for that matter. Its closed-back design helps generate punchy tone with plenty of low-end girth. And its angled top speaker helps disperse your sound, perfect for use onstage. Factor in recessed handles and reinforced corners, and Sweetwater highly recommends the Electro-Harmonix 2 x 12-inch speaker cabinet to any gigging guitarist.

Not a bad cab...speakers, not so much.

By Sweetwater Customer

I knew the speakers were substandard at best in this cab. Purchased for size and construction. Replaced speakers with Celestion G12 V30s out of old Mesa cab. The little cab absolutely screams with my HK 40 Tubemeister.

Great Tilt Cabinet

By Ryan M. from Thousand Oaks, CA

For the price this cabinet is great. I have played it through a Vox AC30 Head, the EH MIG 50, as well as a Fender Twin Reverb 65 Reissue. The cleans sound great and once the speakers are broken in it only sounds better. Check this out before spending more on a different cabinet brand.

Good construction

By Matt M. from Shreveport LA
Music Background: Just a casual, at home guitar player for 40yrs.

I love the actual cabinet and it's build quality. It's made of nice plywood instead of medium density fiber board like the Marshal cabinet which is similar to this EH cab. Also like the metal cab corners instead of plastic ones.... However the speakers that come in the EH cab are junk and sound horrible, but I bought it knowing that from reading other reviews, also I needed an 8ohm cabinet. So I bought two 16ohm Celestion Vintage30s, wired them in parallel, and now I absolutely love this cabinet, and still came out being the same price if not cheaper than the Marshall cab that I almost bought. So I'm happy, got a better built cab with better speakers (in my opinion) for my money. Also built another 2x12 cab using the cheap EH speakers and an old yamaha vertical PA cabinet that looks great and would pass for a factory build,ha ha. Now I can resale it to recoupe some cash.

Decent for the $$$

By Casey B. from Greenville, NC
Music Background: 20 years Guitar

Got this the same time as ENGL FIREBALL 25 and while it would have probably been ok Cab for a cheaper amp but for a more expensive tube amp buy a better cab you will only cheat yourself with this. I can say it's a solid build for a $ cab and would be a great platform to replace stock speakers with something more of your liking bc the $ stock speakers will only hold you back. I returned it a week later for a 5150 2x12 cab and paid the $ difference..

EHX 2X12

By Sweetwater Customer from Michigan

I couldn't find many reviews on this cab, so I thought I would write an honest one to help someone pick this cab. The construction is pretty good plywood (Marshall MX ues MDF). The speakers are somewhat subjective,I noticed when first plugging in to it, a somewhat subdued sound-same amp and settings into different cabs confirmed the EHX speakers must have a lower SPL rating. They are darker and quieter than the other cabs (JCM 1960 w/ G12T-75) I have a Rocket 50 in a single ported cab that was actually louder. I swapped out the EHX for Rocket 50's-that didnt work-speaker breakup occurred too quickly-so lastly I installed a pair of Seventy-80' in this cab and that was the best choice, this cab came to life-works with everything from high gain to blues, to clean. If you are looking to tame a high gain bright amp the cab may be exactly what you need. Even after replacing the speakers this cab was still cheaper than most 2x12 slant closed back cabs on the market

Exactly what I expected

By Mark from Wisconsin
Music Background: 35 years playing electric guitar, songwriter and recording

I bought this cabinet to pair with my new Bugera 20 watt head. Over the last 30 years I have played many amps and about twice as many cabinets. From 1x12 to stacked 1x12's, horizontal and vertical 2x12's and even the full on stacked 4x12 Marshall 50 watt rig. Moving to a new area and seeing mainly small venues in my future I wanted a nice rounded sound of a closed back 2x12. Usually move toward greenbacks so I had to trust the company that brought us The Big Muff and The Electro-mistress to produce a quality sound. I was not disappointed!!
The cabinet is light, weight isn't oppressive to move, and the built in handles are a real plus over most horizontal cabs. Good rounded out sound too. Bass is responsive and not flubby high end has enough chime and cut to fit well in the mix without getting lost in the details. Pairing this 60 watt cab with a 20 watt tube head means efficient power to move a ton of air. I sat in with a local group and had absolutely no issue being heard in the stage mix even over the heavier drum fills. Being a 16 ohm cabinet I have even used it with my 5 watt Marshall Origin combo. Sounds great with either amp just no headroom on the 5 watt power. I am not a high gain player but I have some dirt in my tone, this cabinet gives what it gets pretty reliably, clean tone is pure and not overly influenced by the speaker. It can get real biting but responds to changes in the amp tone stacks extremely well. Glad I didn't let myself be a sound snob and insist on a cabinet that was more than double the $$$ just to get greenback Celestion cones. After almost 40 hours of use the Electo-Harmonix is aging into one of the best cabinets I have plugged a head into,in my 35 years of playing electric guitar. In this day and age we find the 50 and 100 watt 4x12 stacks aren't versatile in the small venues and this 2x12 is quickly becoming my workhorse, both in the clubs and in the studio

Great beater cab

By Chuck G. from Havre De Grace, MD
Music Background: 50+ yrs of guitar, bass, keyboard, singing

You'd be hard pressed to find a new 2x12 cab at this price and quality imho. 1st of all it's made with real poplar plywood. Not heavy MDF fiberboard. It really does help the resonance. I've always liked poplar as a tone wood. The closed back gives it a decent low-mid punch. The rear loaded speakers themselves are surprisingly good albeit their low wattage {30watts each} might limit those who have more than a 50watt head. These speakers load up similar to 25watt greenbacks and though the closed back helps, bass response is somewhat limited compared to say vintage 30's which handle 60watts each. The upper angled speaker helps you to hear it on stage and disperse/widen the sound field. The metal corner protectors and metal handles are nice but why they used a plastic jack plate when they used metal everywhere else is beyond me. It does have 2 parallel jacks to its credit and I'm a fan of it being wired to 16ohm. That always helps leave the door open to daisy-chaining without going below most amps rated ohm loads. The cab has a classic appearance with the white piping and the EH badge. Tolex work was nicely done. Four rubber feet plant it securely. The reason I took a star off was for the plastic jack plate and relatively low wattage speakers.

Excellent

By Sweetwater Customer from CO

Built well, looks good, sounds great.

I've only run it through one amp. The clean channel is especially sweet through this cab.

Awesome 2x12!

By Sweetwater Customer
Music Background: Experienced musician, >100 gigs, 1/2 dozen recording

I got this to match up with my EHX Mig 50, of course, and at first, I didn't think it would be suitable for live gigs as I am accustomed to hauling around a Peavey 4x12 but this thing delivers!

It is a 2x12 as opposed to a 4x12, and the only real drawback is slight loss of bottom end which really comes down to using 2 speakers instead of 4 in my opinion.

But most venues wont even let you crank your volume up past 1 for those 100W heads. My Mig 50 paired with the 60W cab is more than enough!

And my back appreciates it too!
